I like his comment about making Russian stronger before doing other related languages to make it easier. I did something similar. I wanted to learn Japanese, but I had a beginning knowledge of Korean. So instead I took time to make Korean strong and I've been doing Japanese for a month now and the grammar and some of the words are soooooo easy because of my knowledge of Korean.

For everyone hating on Wouter or even Ikenna for that matter, just remember that language learning is a personal journey. If you want to learn one language to an extremely high level, then go for it. If you want to learn basic phrases in 29 languages, then power to you. There's no need to put others down just because their goals and definitions of success differ from your own. Focus on your own path.

For me the issue is that he is vague about his levels on his bios on social media. He presents himself as someone who has learned 29 languages. Most people assume that Wouter is at least proficient in them without asking questions.

I think it's just the fact the claims he can speak 29 languages but rather he's at different levels in fluency and in a lot of the languages he just knows basic phrases and depends on those. I agree that language learning is a different story for everyone but it's definitely misleading to say he speaks 29 languages when a lot of it is just memorizing and depending on those phrases.

Look I know how to say ばか i must be an expert in all the asian languages because I know a couple of words. True polyglot like Kaufmann and Luka Lampariello are able to speak efficiently many languages, Ikenna speaks also many, and Wouter as well, but there are other languages they just can't speak...saying hello in 40 languages doesn't make you fluent in all those languages.

@@staticbuilds7613 I think you got confused with the words fluent and perfect. Fluent just means that you can have smooth conversations in that language. Practice makes perfect, and people tend to forget how fast one loses proficiency in a skill. And conversations are like the bread and butter of language learning, it's both oral and listening exercise. It's also a good way to learn vocab, then you could combine it with other forms of learning a language, reading, then writing down the words you don't understand. Or idioms which you don't know.

Also, what you said about standards is very deep and it can find applications in all aspects of life. So, it looks like he just saying sentences he remembered to the native speakers and sometimes just ignore what he don't know. I like what Wouter said in regards to everyone having different goals because ultimately language learning is a personal journey. To me personally, I think depending on your goal but assuming it is to be able to communicate as efficiently in your native language then one should not get carried away with the quantity of languages they know but instead the quality of that speech and knowledge. Dont be afraid to take time and build it to a HIGH intermediate level and then move to a new one because some people get a bit excited and pile on 5+ languages, i think this is fine if that's your goal and you don't plan to ever become "fluent" and just want to communicate with random people you meet. However if for example you plan to become really proficient then you HAVE to dedicate time to nurture this language before moving on or you might hinder your own growth and be stuck at basic level with random vocabulary and no concrete basis.

In most languages, I would like to be conversational, so for me that is about B1 on the CEFR, or about 1-2 years of learning (if closely related to a language I already speak).

These polyglots out there keep selling us the idea that learning multiple languages to a A1/A2 level is a good idea but I've been there before and trust me guys is not!. I'm sorry if I sound like a hater or even a bit condescending but I'm stating facts. Even tho I like Ikenna and other polyglots such as luca lampariello and some others we gotta be real here!

He himself already said on this exact video at the very start that he is comfortable with only 6 languages and the other 23 are very basic. Still, to be able to speak comfortably with 6 and be a little bit familiar with 23 is impressive. There's no way he could increase his level on all of them while keeping his level on the others. That'll need a high level discipline and specialized daily routine.

I’m currently working on Russian and Italian. I also prefer to actually reach an advanced level in a language before I move on to another, otherwise I could write a gazillion languages all at the A1 level (which is a level anybody could achieve after 15 minutes of memorizing phrases)

You need to have a good ear and a very good memory. You also need to be fairly young. As you get older you tend to lose vocabulary even in your own language. To learn and retain even one word in a foreign language can take hundreds of repetitions and constant practise.
