- The Tamron 11-20 f2.8 is a new fantastic ultra wide zoom lens for Sony APSC cameras, BUT does it perform well?
For this review of the 11-20 I take it into several different locations of Alaska to see how well it works for vlogging, landscape photos, low light performance, and real estate work. The Tamron 11-20 is a perfect travel lens and a fantastic companion to the Tamron 17-70 for Sony cameras. I would say this is the best ultra wide zoom lens for Sony APSC cameras available today.

Thank you for the review. Cant wait to get mine soon. Preordered it like two weeks ago.
NICE
Really awesome to see an Alaskan photography channel. I just bought this for my 6600! I love that I can use the same filter on my other lenses - Sony 16-55 2.8 G, Sony 70-350mm. I'm heading out to Hatcher Pass this afternoon to try it out!
Sweet!!! I was just up there the other day
Excellent take on the 11-20mm, Jake. Kinda wish it had VC though. Will be getting an A6400 soon and will be looking at the 17-70mm as a first zoom lens probably. Your content is a big inspiration to keep pushing with trying to grow my social media.
Awesome
Nice! I was hoping you'd talk about architecture photography, and you did. Thanks, Jake.
Awesome thanks! I wasn’t thinking about it too much until I saw how straight the lines were in some of my test photos. After that it had to be included
Pleasant video, nice scenery and enthusiastic narrative :D
Thanks!
Your reviews are awesome 👍
Thank you!
New here and great review! 2 questions(if you have the time)
1. Can you put an ND filter on the lens? (PolarPro VND)
2. Does the lens zoom in or out at 11mm?
Thank you for your time!
Thanks Jeremy, you can put an ND filter on it (67mm filter thread) and it zooms out at 11mm so 20mm is the most compact
@@JakeSloan cheers! Thank you so much! Just what I needed.
Thanks guy . The lens very nice and Alaska too beautiful .
Thanks!
Awesome Review Jake 👍😉
Thanks!!
I lived in Alaska for awhile and I clearly missed seeing some great places like the ones in this video! I've been looking for a good wide-angle for my a6100 and this may be the one.
This is a great lens for any APSC sony camera
Appreciate the review!
Glad it was helpful!
another banger! Man Tamron is knocking it out of the park. I would love to see them compete in the prime market next! Would be awesome.
crazy how much they are releasing!
I'd love to see an APSC telephoto lens to compete with the Sony 70-350mm OSS (but, with a constant aperture) to make a Holy Trinity of Tamron zoom lenses for APSC bodies (11-20mm, 17-70mm, and ??-??mm)...
Great review and great pictures in a great environment ✌🏻😀 Can you say anything about lens flare? In a German review it was said that the lens doesn‘t perform well in this regard.
I didn't notice it being terrible to be honest but I haven't had the chance to really test it in direct sunlight
FINALLY A REVIEW!!!!! I'm Watching Intently
Sorry it took so long! If I hadn’t formatted that card… 🙄
Great video! Does this lens work on Full Frame at least at 16mm and longer? My Tokina 11-20mm covers my A7SIII at 16mm and up. It would be nice if this Tamron worked similarly. So I can use the lens on both APS-C and FF. Thanks.
This sort of does but it does have a vignette. You can see it here: czcams.com/video/gODKmafaAkM/video.html
Great review! I'm wondering if this will pair nice with the new rumored zv-e10!?!
Yes it will. I can't wait to see what that camera has for features too but this lens will be a wonderful lens for it
@@JakeSloan I can't wait too :) I'm loving my a7c but still interested in something a tad smaller still for certain on the go vlogging!
Yeah I’m super tempted to get one when they are released.
Amazing video, love your energy ! Would you get this lens over the stabilized 17-70 for travels (for a non stabilized sony a6400) ? Is having a wide angle better for getting smooth footage than actual stabilization ? Also this lens is smaller and seems easier to carry around. Not sure, not sure :)
I would still get the 17-70 if I was only getting one lens. it is the most versatile lens and the stabilization makes a big difference on the 6400
@@JakeSloan Thank you so much, your answer and your videos are very helpful !
Fantastic vid Jake, although I admit I'm mostly interested in the 17-70 Tamron. Loved how you fit in a variety of examples in relatively little time. And yeah, I admit I'm also here for the Alaska scenery
LOL that's why I'm here! Thanks a lot, the 17-70 would definitely be the first lens I would get this makes a fantastic second. I did a review of the 17-70 too but it was a LOT colder!! czcams.com/video/ZGP2SWKJ85w/video.html if you haven't seen it
@@JakeSloan I've seen more than once and this video has been critical in making my decision about the 17 - 70. Only thing remaining now is my wallet to agree with this purchase
Would you still recommend this for vlogging on the a6400 without the in body stabilization? Also wondering what kind of grip/handle do you attach to your a6600 for vlogging?
I just use a tripod and yes I’d recommend this lens for travel and vlogging
@@JakeSloan Thanks! Then sounds like we should consider this for our a6400 =)
Nice lens and Video. With best regards from germany ✌
Cheers!!
Been waiting for this review! Contemplating on this with the 17-70. Or this vs the new samyang 12mm f2 af. I have the original manual samyang but this seems replace that
I would absolutely get this one over pretty much anything else at the moment. The performance is just fantastic
I like the Samyang 12mm, I think its not "better" than the Tamron Zoom, but its lighter, smaller and brighter. That just happens to suit what I do, a lot of which is in low-light...
Jake, beginner question .. can you use this lens on a full frame body too or only APSC?
you can but it will need to crop in to work so I would look for a different lens for full frame
gotta love tamron for making these lenses
they are hitting it out of the park with these lenses lately!
Really cool lens, unfortunately i just bought the Sony native 10-18mm APS-C e-mount lens. How would you compare both?
This has better image quality but if you already own the sony I wouldn't worry about it
Nice lens! Of course, I must say, it helps to live where you live. Does anything ever look bad there? :)
nothing lol or it could be that I just go to all the places that look great 😂
@@JakeSloan hhi will it work on sony a7c?
New to photography ...
Would you recommend a Gimbal with A6400 since this lense lacks stabilization?
if you can yes and the new M3 from Zhiyun is excellent. I did a review of it here: czcams.com/video/Xb4Dl4vtvjs/video.html
Very good review! I love that lens, Tamron is doing very well. A query, you use an ND filter right? Which? Greetings!
I do mine are all from Freewell gear
@@JakeSloan Thanks so much Jake!
I love my 28-75mm f/2.8 Tamron and use it on both my A6600 and my A7iii... I wonder how this new Tamron lens stacks up against the Sony 10-18mm f/4 OSS lens. The one stop advantage of the Tamron might be compensated for by the OSS of the Sony lens.
I decided that the copy of the 10-18mm f/4 Sony that I purchased from eBay wasn't sharp enough for my tastes. It is on its way back and I have preordered the Tamron...
The Tamron has MUCH better image quality than the sony. I messed with the 10-18 and it's image quality is just not great. The OSS is nice but not worth it for the sacrifice in image quality in my opinion
Thank you very much for attaching the raw files. I will never buy this lens although I was so eager at the beginning. It's soft but better than any other ultra wide-angle lens available right now. APS-C was never taken seriously in terms of wide angle and FF is the way to go in this regard but 16-35 is the best to go because wider is also soft and I know people will argue the sony 12-24, but I insist it is soft and I owned and sold it after a week. I would love to see you review the Venus 10-18 on A6600 because I might consider that because it's tack sharp on FF but my experience with FF lenses on APS-C was not satisfying at all.
Oh man I would love to review that lens!! I will see if I can get one
Any chance you could try on a full frame body? I’m very curious about that, since the sony 10-18mm actually works on full frame from 12mm 🤓
I did try this on a full frame and there is a bit of vingetting at 20mm and at 11mm there’s a fair amount. You’d have to zoom in or crop in 1.2x to get rid of it.
@@JakeSloan but is there a range in between where there’s no vignette?
I will check today and see
@@JakeSloan THANK YOU!!
Just purchased for real estate, so I think it’ll be perfect compared to the Sony 10-18 f4. Great review!
Excellent!!
This really would be a good combination with the 17-70!
Just wish it had their VC. I should have got the 6600 instead of the 6400....lol!
Me too but I think that would make it much larger! still great for most stuff on a a6400 but probably requires a bit more shots on a tripod or a gimbal
This lens is a dope combination with the 17-70. Tamron and Sigma are carrying the entire APS-C E-mount on their backs. Every time they release a lens, I feel like selling my XT4.
Stabilization works pretty badly with wide angle, especially IBIS. The a6600 wouldn't save it. Even Olympus'/Panasonic's godlike IBIS systems don't do ultrawides perfectly.
Sony's IBIS is pretty much the weakest in the industry, and only good for static shots.
@@professionalpotato4764 I shoot video with a tripod, monopod or gimbal and I detest Vlogging videos. OTOH: I have no problem shooting stills with my non-IBIS A6400...
how does it look uncropped on FF?
There is some vignetting. I actually show it live here: czcams.com/video/gODKmafaAkM/video.html
I was excited about this lens at first, but the retail price has discouraged me.
Probably go for the new Samyang AF 12mm 2.0 instead.
Thats a decent lens as well
I just ordered mine. I will use it on the a6600 for OSS.
awesome!
A shame they didn't put vc in. Given the awesome 17-70, they should have known better... Could have been a winner. I have the a6400, looks like I have to go with the lack luster 10-18 which isn't sharp like this lens.
Agreed!
What do you think of the Zeiss 16-70 ?
I haven’t used it so I really can’t say. I do love the tamron 17-70 however it’s simply fantastic
@@JakeSloan Thank you. I'm on a budget and this is for traveling. So I purchased the a6600 with 18-135 kit lens and I'm looking for a 11-20 or 10-18 used. Is this a good choice?
Does this make the Sony 10mm-18mm worthless?
lol pretty much. the image quality is MUCH better
0:54 What happened here ?
Parts of the glacier were falling into the water but the audio was not great…
@@JakeSloan No, the camera lost focus from your face.
🤮 the rolling shutter 🤮 Great lens, but Sony needs a new sensor for APSC.
agreed!!
11-20 is nonsense. 8-16 is what you need. well, at least 9-16.
ok then
I think the Sigma 18-35 f1.8 is the better wide zoom
did you watch the video? This lens is a zoom that covers the zoom range before the sigma even starts at 18mm...
@@JakeSloan i didn't have time to watch it, sorry😂🤦♂️
