I remember the first time I saw Federer. Wimbledon fourth round in 2001. I was a huge Sampras fan and this kid just comes out and hits impossibly gorgeous shot after gorgeous shot and takes down Sampras when I didn't think anyone could beat Sampras at WImbledon. I actually called my Dad and told him to watch the highlights. I think I said, "I think I just saw the new best tennis player in the world. This kid is unbelievable." He was even better than I thought.

A couple of observations. 1) How strange to see Federer playing in front of empty stands, and on outer courts in some cases. 2) He's got some of the best hands in the history of the game, along w/ McEnroe. A lot of these great shots, even the "lucky" stabs, work because he has the hands to control the racquet face at the moment of impact. Practice hones that, but there's a level of natural athletic ability which most of us just don't possess, even other top players.

you might be right but you probably know a lot about tennis, as i have from time-to-time, as well.
the thing is, if a person only watches finals, like many, they might only be familiar with a few players!
the more i watch tennis on youtube, myself, the more i am introduced to some very talented players. it's kind of cool like that. a couple leave me scratching my head about why they didn't rise into the upper echelons. i think the mental side plays such a big role and having a feel for the game.

@@trents3515 Well Haas was one of the ones who did make it (partly)... The guy had more comebacks then anyone I can think of (I mean after injuries)... He almost managed that amazing feat of reaching no.1 without winning a single GS... I think he also has a silver medal at the Olympics... And that's a big deal (contrary to what Djoko fans will tell you)... But unfortunately he goes down in the books next to Marat Safin, or more recently Delpo... The "what if" category... But in all honesty, Tommy's matches in GS's when he passed 30 years were jaw dropping... I remember the 2013 RG, after the Isner match, and the Youzhny demolition ,I honestly thought he had it in him to beat Nole... Fun times...

Let's talk about why Djokovic and Nadal are so good, as well as so much of the field over the last 20 years. It's because of this man right here, Federer. He raised the bar so much higher than it had ever been. Not just compared to the others playing at the time, but objectively a higher level of tennis than had ever been seen. It forced the likes of Djokovic and Nadal to be so good in order to not only compete, but surpass. Federer forever changed the game.
