As for my opinion if an animated film will ever win best picture. It will only happen when their is an animated feature that is A:Adult B: culturally singfanct C: completely changes the game of animation. D : Is better the. It’s competition. I think if their is ever an animated film. the same level of writing,atmosphere,and maturity,Artsy as Say movies like Midnight cowboy, Ragging Bull or No country for old men, an animated film will win, or at least be in a two horse race. The problem is animation companies (even some anime) are too afraid or think it’s impossible to make an animated film on the same level as a best picture winner.
I think it can absolutely happen in the next 10 years. Yes, oscars like dramas. Yes, they like stories with substance. But the core of the issue is that there needs to be an interest. It needs to be apart of the discussion. Pixar raised the bar so high that a great movie like Soul was underwhelming. But if Soul had been released 5 years ago or sooner the Oscars would have been all over it. It was part of the discussion. Just like minorities, people of color, women, and all marginalized groups being represented, animated films could be next. As soon as there is a buzz around it, the academy will pay attention. The timing has to be right. An animation studio has to take a risk and make a truly deep film (that can also appeal to kids) and I believe it will happen.
Agreed, Animation is well over due for it's 400 blows/Breathless or Saparonos/Wire. Landmark Works that lead to a new wave art, skyrocketing what was once considered low brow commmical family entertiment into a serious art from that complely re define what the medium is and what it can be. I think were closer to that day more then ever, the medium just needs it's own Godard/Truffaut.

No, the Academy is way to stuck up and filled with old people who think Animation is for kids to realize the great work Animation has done for decades. If Soul can’t even get nominated, which animated movie in the next couple of years is gonna be? Soul was Pixar’s and Pete Docter‘s push for Best Picture just like Dunkirk was Nolan‘s big push for it. The Academy is gonna loose these directors and studios making „Oscar films“ if they don’t recognize their effort. Pixar and Nolan are not gonna stop making amazing movies, but they are gonna stop making Oscar movies. And that’s quite sad.

The animated film would need to stop being formulaic and addressed for kids as primary audience. It would also need to not be an indie/art house style animation. It would need to hit mainstream notoriety. It is a challenging combination.
I mean they have Had 10 movies nominated for best picture in the past like Quiz show,The help, Dead Poets Society, War horse and The sixth sense. Not mention won the acting and screenplay awards before for Dead poet society, Ed Wood,Marry Poppins. If they ever revive Touchstone/Hollywood (witch seems unlikely) or release another art film under the Disney name like the Straight story(also unlikely) its very possible
