Thing is, about 4-5 movies nominated this year would have been perfect to win Best Picture. It was just a really good selection of films to choose from. Last year was trash. Blackkklansman, Vice and Black Panther shouldn't have even touched the Best Picture category. Every film nominated this year was better than most of the nominees from last year.
I think many foreigners are more excited than koreans with all the 'Parasite' winning lol In my personal opinion, I have been watching korean dramas and movies, since 2007. I know Korea has better movies that many foreigners have not discovered yet. The main reason why I'm so excited is not by the movie itself but because finally korean entertainment world is achieving international recognition this will open many doors not only for the director Bong and all the actors involved but also for more korean movies and korean actors and directors. This is just the beginning for something bigger for Korea. That is the reason why I'm so happy and proud even as a foreigner. :)
i think it’s because in the west, the Oscars are the most well known award for any art form and they’re known as the hardest award to get. the Oscar for best picture is probably the most prestigious award westerners can imagine it, and for decades we’re used to winners being very similar, so to see a foreign language movie win with a foreign cast and an anti-capitalist message is just astonishing, i never thought something like this could happen in our lifetime.
My girlfriend is Korean and she was quietly shocked the whole time. She kept laughing talking about how she always just saw Bong as a good local director. Meanwhile, my white Canadian ass had tears in my eyes and arms in the air!

It won one of the toughest years in Oscar history. 1917, Joker Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, Marriage Story and the Irishman all deserve Best Picture. Ford v Ferrari, Little Women and Jojo Rabbit were also fantastic films. Parasite beating all of these films was remarkable. Any other year and it would have probably swept more awards like Cinematography and Production Design.

Closest is in 2000, where Ang Lee won the exact same 3 prizes as Sam Mendes (Globes, DGA, and BAFTA) but for CROUCHING TIGER HIDDEN DRAGON and ended up losing the Oscar to the Critics Choice winner (which that year was Steven Soderbergh for TRAFFIC). Soderbergh was particularly shocking given that he was a double nominee that year and many thought he would split votes with himself.
My favorite part when watching the oscars was when parasite was in the list of nominations the crowd went wild. You could just tell it was a loved film and rightly so.

Not true. Parasite is the third to win both. "The Lost Weekend" (1945) and "Marty" (1955) were the first two.
