Isn’t luck, he seeded too early. Wait until it cools down, no thunderstorms and hurricanes. I have been there and done that too many times. I learned from my mistakes.
The last straw was when I seeded 2 areas. First one seeded mid August the first time. Washed out by thunderstorms and Hurricanes 2 weeks in a row and what did come up died due to damping off from high temperatures and moisture. The third seeding stayed around but 90 degree temperatures stressed it out to the point it came up but just kinda stopped growing.
The other section I seeded late September. It came in thicker, grew faster and actually passed up the other section that had been seeded over 2 weeks earlier. I was mowing it before the other section. It also looked stronger in the next spring and summer.

My brother in law and I just put down 25 lbs of GCI fescue. The lawn is sloped completely, and we've tried straw and the paper mulch. Neither really works. Tackifer does work, but the lack of DIY equipment makes it hard. We had a granular tackifier we mixed into a 5 gallon bucket with water and tried a basic siphon, but that didn't work. So we scooped it out 32 oz at a time for the hose end sprayer. But, every thing seems to work, but I'll probably put down straw and 1 more gallon of tackifier before next weeks rain.

God Bless. My Spring 2021 renovation new seeded cool season lawn got washed out twice in March. I got the point I covered it with plastic when rain was coming. I fought and kept at it. It came in great, but Summer killed half with other issues, so I renovated again.
I seeded Sept 9th. Now week 3 Wks looking good. Need to do first cut now. Fortunately no washout. Weather was great. Had a few days of heavy rain but it was scattered. Now weather this week was great and forecast to be ideal.
*Next spring I'm overseeing with Zoysia.* Cool season (fescue, KBG, rye) way too much work. April, May, June, July great, but 97F days, 80's at night for a few weeks, plus weeds, insects put the hurt on the lawn. By August it was gone. I killed it off.
I put in 150 sq-ff of zoysia sod mid summer along street between curb and sidewalk as an experiment. It was discounted leftovers sod that I bought for cheap. It is going great. So Zoysia it is. I hope my Spring 2022 overseed with Zoysia seed will take. The seed cost is about $35 a pound !!!!! I need 12 lbs for my 3000sf minimum... $420. Ouch!!! I paid $75 for 25lbs of Titan fescue. That is over x11 the cost!!!
Brother I can't do cool season in Memphis. Grass I am growing is a nursery lawn to help get the Zoysia established, which I read will take 3 years. I might buy some sod and plug it in as an experiment. The price of seed is high? Sod is even more.

If you end up with another wash out, they sell a blanket that is only made of fiber and contains zero netting. It breaks down quickly and most commercial mowers will not have a problem mowing over it and grinding it up. It basically falls apart and becomes similar to penn mulch.

As for the turf part of this video…With KBG you need to have faith. You’re overdoing it, Pete. Whatever doesn’t come in will fill in quickly if you spoon feed it, even if you have some washout. It is an extremely frustrating grass to grow but when it starts coming in, there’s no stopping it.

Don't forget that bluegrass will spread quite a bit, it's not like fescue, you don't need it to come up super thick. As long as there is at least one plant per 5-10" area it will fill in. Mine came in patchy like you have here during the spring and it was so thick by last month that I had to dethatch it already. It's only ~6 months old. Can't even see the soil anymore if I spread the grass.
Also, when you said your little reel mower saved the day, I thought you were talking about your Liberty 43, then I saw the Allett C34 😂. I love the little Liberty 43 though, honestly my dream mower. I pray one day I am able to find a used one for a decent price ...

I was wondering when Pete would have hydro seeder. Just wait I can already see the wheels turning in Pete’s head on how to use our backpack sprayers as a mini hydroseeder in some shape or form. Praying for your brother and family. Be safe, Stay Healthy.

Hey good morning Pete. I did a full Reno on my front yard with your cool blue it is coming up to three weeks old now. I would like to apply a small application of fertilizer to it. Is it OK to walk on the baby Grass now? As you know the blue grass is still very small but the fescue is about 2 to 2 1/2 inches tall. God bless you Pete. Thank you for all your shared knowledge

Pete with that hydro seeder you can get grass to grow on your shed and trucks. Lol I did see something about them guys and doing overseeding with a unit.

Brilliant move with the allet. This actually inspires me to drag one of my old locke mowers out of retirement and "mcgyver" it into a thatch rake. Shouldn't be too difficult, just take off the bed knife and figure out how to add the tines, which you can get off amazon as they sell them separately for those cheap electric dethatchers.

When life gives you lemons, flatten them babies out with the Allett. Praying for your family. Thank you for the motivation!
