The reason i think this could work as a musical is because the first Joker movie was arguably a theatre-of-the-mind, unreliable narrator business that might have all, or partly, been in his head. Having perfect musical adaptation based on a vision he had of a dancer that sets his madness going again... I think it works in premise. Heck, that was the majority of how they pulled of "Chicago," treating it as a theatre production in Roxie's mind. The proof of the pudding is in the eating, of course, but I'm willing to give it a shot. Maybe it's another trojan horse for The Message, but I'll hold out hope until it shows up.
nope, he wasnt a dancer in the first one, that was a coping method (slow danced twice after shooting the guys on the tube and before going on murrays stage), his vision was to be a comedian....., murray called him the joker, no the dancer. i know the films that have come out recently have been total shit, but i think you have all lost some perspective. the first movie was a very articulate expression of mental illness and the social stigma and struggle with it - therapists "nobody gives a shit about you arthur", the way the two cops spoke to him outside the hospital, how the black girl treats him. it wasnt theatre or a dance.it was like michael douglas falling down movie on steroids, with depression, and face paint.
Yeah, but trailers are unreliable at best. A 1998 film 'Lost in Space' had an amazing trailer, and it turned out to be one of the worst films of all time. Trailers are meant for hyping and misleading people. That's their purpose. To be frank the first 'Joker' wasn't that good. That idea was done before, and done better in my opinion. The only reason that film got any traction is because it's a DC based character. If the film was about Arthur, a crazed loner, no one would care much.
Love Mauler's point with Lady Gaga, it is true, no one is talking about comparing her to Phoenix. Gaga can act and is a great performer. How she acts in this movie, to this particular character can be dissected when the movie plays. Drinker needs to shift in giving examples of poor acting performance he has seen with the actors/actresses instead of assuming an opinion.
I believe one thing that hasn’t been mentioned is that Lady Gaga in and of itself is a performance. The person Stefani Germanotta has been performing as Lady Gaga for over 15 years, and I believe that deserves as much credit as her more conventional performances in films.
Yeah… in that specific role. Outwith that he is an absolute tit. This is the problem with todays world, if I had saw him in that role and other roles showcasing his acting, yeah great… but no.. with social media and every single actor and actress on it making their personal and political views known to the world, it completely ruins the immersion for me. Now all I see is an absolute weirdo who cries on camera on social media and makes absolutely out of touch statements and is absolutely trapped in his Hollywood bubble. Same for 90% of celebrities now.
My introduction to Todd Philips was Road Trip back in 2000. It was one of my favorite movies back then for when I wanted to have something casually fun on my TV. I'm glad to see he's been able to evolve as a filmmaker. Every great piece of work is a result of culminated experience.
And now after being portrayed as a victim from SoC1eTy, joker is a semi-wossie that needs Harley's help to pull out his confident, malevolent persona. It's not joker brainwashing a psychiatrist with his charisma and constructed persona, and a smart therapist willingly falling into madness and making the same choice as the joker...it's a 'weakened' and 'silenced' man who needs his woman to find himself. I have no doubt this will be visually beautiful and I'm actually in favour of the mad musical approach (you'll see, they sold it badly, it's not a freaking musical) but this is not joker to me.
Having looked into it, being an extra in a scene where she is uncredited isn't as confidence-boosting as you think. Good show but even Lady Gaga says that role isn't the highlight of her career.

as someone who is not a Fan of the modern interpretation of Harley Quinn,i still liked the first movie enough to at least give it a chance. Lady Gaga as Harley is actually kinda interesting considering how Eccentric she is in real life and Hearing it was going to have Musical elements actually had me very intrigued. I really want this to actually be a Romantic story in some ways, but not in a way where they make it out to be where Harley Quinn is the true mastermind behind the Duo's schemes like with the Harley Quinn Animated series or with Margo Robbies interpretation. The only thing im wondering is why is Zazie Beets coming back? Her role in the first movie was fairly small and doesnt need to be revisited.

I didn't want to see Joker, as Heath Ledger had already done the best performance I could imagine. However, I did enjoy Joker. I am worried about the musical bit for Joker 2. I really hate musicals.
Coming from NY, Lady Gaga was a known talent before her albums blew up. She’s a weirdo theater kid / performer. You could criticize her for being a little derivative and wearing her influences on her sleeve, but she’s definitely capable of having a solid take on Harley Quinn. Shes a great casting.
One thing I'll say is she definitely gives everything she does her all. So I'm reserving judgment until it comes out. I think alot of people will be pleasantly surprised.
You forego immersion using her, a famous pop star, for 15 songs. There's no room left to get a Harley Quinn when you're getting obviously-Lady Gaga. I'd love to see what we might've gotten but we're getting this now & I can't see them fitting both when one requires immersion while the other one breaks it. Think ppl. 'oh she's great casting' ..bc she can sing & act & that's all we'll consider here. I can't believe mauler didn't think beyond the obv here when there's a ton to consider
I’m on the fence with this one. While the trailer looks great; the last time Todd Phillips did a sequel to one of his movies it ended up being crap. Then again that was a decade ago and he’s probably improved in his writing.
You'll be happy to know Todd Philips didn't get a writing credit on the first one but he did on the sequels. 1. John Lucas, Scott Moore, [Jeremy Garelick] 2. Scott Armstrong, Craig Mazin, Todd Philips 3. Craig Mazin, Todd Phillips
exactly. this is going to be a hamming it up lady gaga movie, guest appearing arthur fleck as a plot tool. all she did in the trailer is things arthur did in the first movie, that nobody else was around to see to be able to copy. its fucking stupid
I think this has the potential to be the 3rd or 4th musical I actually like. I can only remember The Little Shop of Horrors off the top of my head but I know there were others. I have a strong feeling that this is going to be a banger. I rarely have expectations, so my experience in life is that I am guaranteed to be disappointed. When you are 0/300 on positive expectations it can be traumatizing, I hope it is great.
Mauler didn't have to be afraid to simply say Lady Gaga is a good actress. There are plenty of people who started as musicians first that are also good in movies.
I watch Joaquin Phoenix for his ability to play tortured characters. His ability to show multiple emotions in one expression is very impressive. Lady Gaga, when given the right material, can also act the hell out of things. I'm quite curious at this point....
When I saw they made Harley a patient instead of a doctor I lost interest. It could be good but I don’t have much hope this will be as good as the trailer otherwise makes it seem.
They never wanted to follow the source material, other than the bare necessities. They just wanted extra profit from all the obsessed DC fans. That first film wasn't even about the character of Joker. It was about some guy named Arthur who got screwed by the system. We've seen that film before, and it was don e a lot better. 'Falling Down' comes to mind, 'Taxi Driver', 'King of Comedy', etc...
being on pitch is not the only thing that makes a voice sound good, especially in a musical where you have so much expression in how you’re using your voice. if you have a really high budget musical, i actually think the singing is more important than the acting ability (of course relatively, both have to be on a high standard and i personally think the singing ability should be a tad more important). then again, i’m a musician so i’m biased
It’s the Joker, he’s known for being theatrical whilst committing sickening acts of violence, most versions tend to maintain that aspect of his character.

There are so many problems with this to consider & none of them have been brought up by the talking heads beyond drinker's 'I didn't know initially about casting a pop star...'
I’m kinda happy to hear everyone having a different opinion on this instead of the usually rank and file opinion. This movie could go in any direction, and these critics’ opinions showcase that.
Whoa this like the first time I think drinker is just talking out of his ass about people who started doing something other than acting and get into it and are good. Say what you will about GaGa as an artist or popstar she has serious acting skills based off star is born\house of Gucci. Also no denying her voice I think she's actually a very thought out choice for the role.
Hey Wonderful Drinker and your lustrous cohorts. Love your takes videos and other things such as this. If you remember, the first Joker was all mood and music and method acting. I did not know until watching this that it will be a musical Joker 2. At the end of Joker and around the epiphany point in the film, he was dancing around with music that was not there. And the symphony at the end where he was heralded by the protesters and the music drove that scene. I have watched Laga Gaga in her films and honestly she had done an incredible job like seriously surprised. Vulnerability on display which is hard to make believe. Anyways, I think the musical aspect is to be the ethos in the mind of the Joker, that as long a the melody of madness is playing in his head, then he does not have to face the reality of his real life, which is tragic. Therefore, the movie explaines his madness as a separation from the actual state to a state of sedation in which he feels Powerful and lacks Emparhy. This will be a very interesting sequel, in which I do not recall anyone really challenging mental illness in this kind of way. I thought Joker 1 was a deep dive into the psychology of a mentally unstable person and I think this side show circus like addition speaks to that unhinged clown of of a psycho that we all kind of fell in love with as a supervillian. You know, the best thing about Batman and his row of antagonists is that they are all real people without godlike superpowers. In other words, they have to use their intellect, acquired skills, and resources to act in any and all capacity wether they be on the side of good or evil. I'm looking forward to this film, but wether it sucks or it's good, that's all I have to say about it. Go away now!
They were wise to keep any scene of the inevitable over-acting from Gaga out of the trailer. My one hope is that Todd Phillips was able to keep her mostly subdued.
Yup. Gaga sucks as an actress (not a fan of her ‘music’ either, but that’s irrelevant really). She’s not got classical leading lady looks either. Will still give the movie a go though, based on the quality of the first movie alone.
Lady Gaga had a small part in Robert Rodriguez's "Machete Kills". That one always flies under the radar when people talk about her film acting credentials.
I remember seeing Blade 2 when I was 14. In that movie they cast Luke Goss of Bros (an 80s British boy band) as the villain, Jared Nomak. The consensus from most people who watched it was that Goss was horrendously miscast, what were they thinking casting a pop star as the main villain, that for most people it was distracting, completely pulled them out of the movie and prevented them from taking it seriously. The thing is, I had never seen or heard of Bros. I had no idea who Luke Goss was, didn't know he was already famous for being in a band, and I thought his performance in that movie was great. I just saw him as another actor and didn't notice anything subpar about his acting. The point I'm making is that I think a lot of times the problem people have with seeing a musician or pop star acting in a movie, a lot of the times the problem is in the head of the viewer.
I have never been a big Lady Gaga fan, but I have been surprisingly impressed with her in A Star is Born and House of Gucci. Plus if she brings this persona she had in the beginning of her career, it seems like a logical choice if this is meant to have musical numbers. Plus, I have seen many female Gaga fans loving her casting for Joker 2, so there's that huge bullseye from a marketing point of view.
I have this weird thing where I find it impossible to have an opinion about something I've never seen. I know, right? But judging by the trailer, this flick looks to have the potential for awesomeness. It seems like the writers were psyched to continue this story.
A musical can work as long as the characters are interesting and the story is great. I have seen some crazy animated stuff that is... good. And yes they sing, a lot, but it is GOOD.
The icing on the cake would be that media would praise this film because the first one (which they hated) was popular. But the average viewer would hate it.
An actress who wears a dress made entirely out of meat to a major awards show seems like a natural for a Joker movie to me.

It’s like watching an old married couple bickering 😳😬😅 A lot of respect to Drinker for keeping it in the clip though.

i don't know, the first one was a surprise for ppl, but it was really an art-style movie.
this time the surprise is gone, so what remains is...an art-style movie. and i hear it leans towards musical?.
i very much doubt that will work a 2nd time, but hey.
also...the first was a character study about Joker, this one will be one about HQ, not sure how many will be drawn to that.
Just why? The story didn't need a continuation.

It was one of the few DC-adjacent movies that wasn't an unmitigated disaster. It has to go on.
I actually wanted a sequel. And I'm 100% in on it.
Mauler going to bat for Gaga is pretty funny. The tone of his voice was basically slapping drinker.
And it was well deserved.
@iamthewizardwhoknocks2845 I do appreciate Mauler standing up. Drinker was prob being alil ruff on her. Personally I can't get past the Musical part. Def gonna have to wait for reviews I trust. Multiple reviews lol

Madonna was going to play Harley Quinn in the late nineties, along with Howard Stern as the Scarecrow, in a sequel to Batman and Robin which thankfully never got off the ground
Somewhere in the multiverse, that film exists. And Dougrey Scott is Wolverine.
@@devlinallistair-zx5by With Nick Cage Superman! Actually, I might want to see all of these in a multiverse movie, with them at their current ages and abilities.
part of me really wishes that happened, would love to see Red Letter Media forced to watch it.....
Oddly enough now due to the low standards for a woman's appearance in media, Howard Stern could play Harley Quinn and Madonna play Scarecrow without any added makeup or special fx.
I don't know. A sequel to Batman and Robin would have been amazing (for all the wrong reasons).
When Mauler got his back up, I immediately starting humming, "When A Man Loves A Woman!"
the elephant in the room should surely be that it's likely only a fucking musical because of lady gaga joining the project in the first place though?
I thought "A star is born" would suck... I was completely wrong. Gaga can act much better than expected, Cooper can sing much better than expected.
its just going to be more of that movie, but with added face paint.gaga cant act, or sing.she doesnt have any variation in her voice,it doesnt go high or delicate, its just one droning tone that gradually gets louder towards the end of the song.listen the song from the bradley cooper movie.
One thing that will always amuse me is that Hildur has worked for two people who both started out with stuff like the Hangover and then one went and made HBO’s Chernobyl and Todd made the Joker. I just found that interesting
"was arguably a theatre-of-the-mind"
pretentious AF
nope, he wasnt a dancer in the first one, that was a coping method (slow danced twice after shooting the guys on the tube and before going on murrays stage), his vision was to be a comedian....., murray called him the joker, no the dancer. i know the films that have come out recently have been total shit, but i think you have all lost some perspective.
the first movie was a very articulate expression of mental illness and the social stigma and struggle with it - therapists "nobody gives a shit about you arthur", the way the two cops spoke to him outside the hospital, how the black girl treats him. it wasnt theatre or a dance.it was like michael douglas falling down movie on steroids, with depression, and face paint.
A Joker musical is gonna be more gay than if you combined Velma, She Hulk and The Acolyte

I watched the trailer recently; it was better than I thought it was. I hope it does well at the box office. 🎉
Mauler going to bat for Gaga was great to hear.
Feel like the cynicism football kept being kicked between Mauler and Drinker then promptly got switched out for the optimism ball.
I believe one thing that hasn’t been mentioned is that Lady Gaga in and of itself is a performance. The person Stefani Germanotta has been performing as Lady Gaga for over 15 years, and I believe that deserves as much credit as her more conventional performances in films.
But why a musical?
Director said it's not a musical
Mauler hits it on the head, GoT is where I noticed Pedro Pascal as an actor, he was intimidating and badass.
I have no doubt this will be visually beautiful and I'm actually in favour of the mad musical approach (you'll see, they sold it badly, it's not a freaking musical) but this is not joker to me.
at the end of the first movie arthur wasnt weak
It is delightfully refreshing to see you guys disagreeing with each other but it not descending into the usual web-based bullshit.
She acted first. Then went into music. She was in HBO the Saprano's.
Most of these people have not seen that masterpiece of a show, unfortunately. It's come up a few times.

I tuned in late yesterday and didn't realize they were talking about musicals because of the Joker! I love musicals, so this has me intrigued as well. I wonder if it would be too dark for me though.
@@MaryRohwer I like certain Musical elements. I love the original West Side Story film adaptation and the In the Heights film was fairly well done with memorable songs and great choreography. Then we get terrible musicals like Dear Evan Hansen.

We both enjoy O!Brother, Where Art Thou? and quote it pretty often. My mother said she had a hard time getting into that one, but maybe we relate since we're in the south. I thought it was fun to figure out which Odyssey character was being portrayed.

I’m sure her acting will be fine but she’s not attractive. At least not Harley Quinn attractive.
Harley Quinn fatigue *is* a thing😂
Lets wait and see. Though with how Harley has been handled recently, it doesn't inspire much confidence
1. John Lucas, Scott Moore, [Jeremy Garelick]
2. Scott Armstrong, Craig Mazin, Todd Philips
3. Craig Mazin, Todd Phillips

Ye ol' trailer bait and switch. Not falling for it.
exactly. this is going to be a hamming it up lady gaga movie, guest appearing arthur fleck as a plot tool. all she did in the trailer is things arthur did in the first movie, that nobody else was around to see to be able to copy. its fucking stupid
Finally a comic book movie that isn't formulaic and we have no idea what to expect from it. How movies are supposed to be made.
She was good in House of Gucci
Courtney Love in the People vs. Larry Flint. Bjork in Dancer in the Dark.
Wait, this is a musical?
I watch Joaquin Phoenix for his ability to play tortured characters. His ability to show multiple emotions in one expression is very impressive. Lady Gaga, when given the right material, can also act the hell out of things. I'm quite curious at this point....
Joker Fol.. Foliu.. Fole.. F@ck! Joker 2 seems promising.
It was about some guy named Arthur who got screwed by the system.

being on pitch is not the only thing that makes a voice sound good, especially in a musical where you have so much expression in how you’re using your voice. if you have a really high budget musical, i actually think the singing is more important than the acting ability (of course relatively, both have to be on a high standard and i personally think the singing ability should be a tad more important). then again, i’m a musician so i’m biased

Personally I thought the first Joker was a very good movie. So I hope they can keep it on that level if they made a sequel
Folie à deux, you guys are doing great/good enough with your pronunciation.
Waiting for Joker 3 : Ménage à trois
They were wise to keep any scene of the inevitable over-acting from Gaga out of the trailer.
My one hope is that Todd Phillips was able to keep her mostly subdued.
She did not over act in AHS.
Doubt if they hired her to be subdued.
Musicals are Life with a soundtrack that everyone knows!
Having said that, Lady Gaga is a Satanist phedopile, so I can see why people do have a problem with her casting in this case...

@@kingcosworth2643 Totally agree about BB and also musicals.

Yes, like his classics Hangover 2/3, masterpieces.
She was good in House of Gucci too. The movie was meh but performance-wise she did good. Depends on what is to act there she may deliver.
The icing on the cake would be that media would praise this film because the first one (which they hated) was popular. But the average viewer would hate it.
