The 2024 Acura TLX Is A Mild Tweak To A Solid Value

  • The 2024 TLX is barely a refresh to be honest. Some European car companies wouldn't have even mentioned a re-styled grille and bigger LCD, but that doesn't mean you should overlook Acura's refinements. For 2024 the TLX focuses on Acura's core repeat shoppers as well as streamlining inventory for dealers and customers alike. With sedan sales sliding we should be thankful Acura is still dedicated to their midsize/compact flagship, but that size confusion continues to be the TLX's achilles heel. It's 5-Series sized on the outside, but smaller than the Integra in some dimensions inside. So what it is? It's the reliable and fun to drive value alternative to the S60, A4, 3-Series and C-Class, and that's just fine.

I cross-shopped the TLX Type-S, G70, S60 Recharge, and Q50. Bought the 2023 Type-S in late September and am delighted with it. It takes a little time to get used to the goofy trackpad, but now it's second nature. Fuel economy is directly proportional to driving style, but 25 mpg is my average with mostly local driving. Saw 30 mpg on long highway trip.

The car is more than fast enough for me, handles well enough, has an adequate trunk (unlike the G70), can be had with an optional real space saver spare tire, and has a superb sound system. Yes, it's a little on the heavy side, but I'm ok with that. I don't care about the electronic driver assists, and leave them mostly disabled. You can also disable the idle stop (auto stop-start) with a center console button or by programming the individual drive mode to leave it disabled.

Currently have a 21 A-Spec FWD which I love but I do have an objective view of the uptrim models in this segment. If one can swing it, the BMW M340i xDrive is the way to go as it really does combine sublime performance with exceptional fuel economy. If one wants to go with a value play then the TLX-S and G70 3.3T are worthy considerations; granted I'd lean in favor of Acura over Genesis due largely to the good experiences I've had with owning both Honda and Acura products.

Why won’t Infiniti just do this for the Q50? Such a shame. It needs the Z’s gauge cluster and transmission, the QX60’s dash and infotainment, and the maxima’s vented seat function, rear heated seat function, and pano sunroof. All are things in the Nissan parts bin that would keep the Q50 competitive in today’s market, as I think it’s still a very good looking car (esp 2018+). All are things they could’ve added at launch of the Q50 back in 2014 or whatever. And most certainly they are all things that they could’ve added during at least one of the 10 model years that the car has existed in its same form. 2023 Honda Recalls and Class Action Lawsuits
      2023 honda recalls and lawsuits
About the 2023 Honda Recalls and Lawsuits
The recent headlines surrounding Honda have been dominated by a series of recalls and class action lawsuits filed against the automaker. These issues involve concerns related to brake and rearview camera defects, electric power steering system malfunctions, and alleged variable timing control defects. In this article, we delve into the details of the Honda recalls and class action lawsuits, the impact on consumers nationwide, and how Lemon Law Auto Fraud can provide guidance and support in safeguarding your rights and seeking compensation.
Honda Recalls: Brake and Rearview Camera Defects
Honda recently issued recalls for various models due to brake and rearview camera defects. These recalls address potential safety hazards that can result in accidents and injuries.
Unexpected Loss of Brake Function: Honda recalled over 124,000 Civic, Passport, and Pilot vehicles, including certain model year 2020-2021 Civic, 2020-2023 Ridgeline, 2021-2023 Passport, 2021-2022 Pilot, and 2020 Acura MDX vehicles. The recall was prompted by concerns that the vehicles could experience an unexpected loss of brake function, increasing the risk of a crash.
Defective Brake Holds: Another recall impacted nearly 400 model year 2023 Civic, Accord, Acura RDX, and Acura Integra vehicles. These vehicles were manufactured with defective brake holds, leading to potential movement while the brake hold is activated. Honda plans to notify impacted vehicle owners by mail, starting from July 24.
Rearview Camera Concerns: Honda recalled over 1.1 million Odyssey, Pilot, and Passport vehicles due to defective rearview cameras that may not display properly. This recall applies to model year 2018-2023 Honda Odyssey, 2019-2022 Honda Pilot, and 2019-2023 Honda Passport vehicles. A non-functional rearview camera can compromise the driver's visibility, increasing the risk of a crash or injury.
      Class Action Lawsuits against Honda
In addition to the recalls, Honda is facing class action lawsuits that allege serious defects in its vehicles' components.
Variable Timing Control Actuator Defect: A class action lawsuit filed against Honda claims that the automaker knowingly sold vehicles with defective variable timing control actuators. The alleged defect, affecting model year 2012-2014 CR-Vs, 2012 Accords, and 2012-2015 Crosstours, can lead to catastrophic engine failure and poses a safety hazard.
Defective Electric Power Steering Systems: Two separate class action lawsuits were filed against Honda, asserting that model year 2022-2023 Honda Civic vehicles were manufactured with defective electric power steering systems. These systems may "stick," requiring an increase in steering effort, leading to overcorrections and potential collisions.
Electric Braking System Sticking: Another class action lawsuit argues that Honda sold model year 2022-2023 Honda Civic vehicles with electric braking systems that can stick at highway speeds. This alleged defect can cause vehicle owners to overcorrect, increasing the risk of collisions.

As an 2010 Acura owner, we just had to worry about the beak, the relative down on power compared to mainstream turbos coming up, and lack of type S model. This TLX type S is 15 years more advanced but I have a lot more problems with the design choices especially the proportions as you mentioned this time extensively. It makes sense the current gen TLX replace the RL and Acura should create a new TL based on the excellent new Accord.
By the way thanks for continuing doing the consumer oriented review as you do, as many auto journalists even newer ones start to sound like a commercial, prioritizing quirks and performance above all else since they get to drive a different car every week.

That’s very interesting that you mentioned Toyota’s new post-2015 TNGA car platform because their new cars genuinely have far worse passenger room to almost all Rival Honda models. That’s exactly why the Acura TLX’s trash levels of rear interior space is a nonstarter for so many buyers. A Honda Fit will give you more comfortable rear passengers than a Acura TLX. This TLX is an absolute sales flop

The TLX was designed to replace both the TL and TSX, which might explain why they made it a "tweener" from the beginning. So it got the exterior size closer to the TL, and the interior closer to the TSX. What's even stranger is that they decided to price it like the 3 series even when it's longer than the E Class.

I have an A5, so I admit to some bias, but last year I accompanied a good friend as he tried the new TLX S and then went to an Audi dealership and tried the S4. For similar priced vehicles, the Audi spanked the Acura in just about every metric, including ride, handling, accleration and mileage. I like both cars, but it wasn't really a contest as to which was better overall. If I was currently in the market, I'd think about a used/CPO S4 before a new TLX S. I'd imagine the Audi depreciated more than than the Acura and might be a better deal. JMO.

1:40 Sized like an accord, but interior space like a civic
2:20 Still FWD based, nose-heavy weight distribution
5:30 Terrible rear seat space; worse than last gen TLX and 2004-2008 TL
    6:30 Bizarre design
8:40 $60K+ and no touchscreen lol; 04-08 had a touchscreen
    11:20 5.0 sec. 0-60
    14:00 Type S(low)
16:55 Abysmal MPG due to being overweight at 4300+ lbs
20:50 Lexus ES more comfortable and efficient; better sales
    26:55 M340i >> TLX-S

You're better of getting Genesis G70 3.3T with 365 or 2024 2.5 with 300 hp. You'll get way more for the price. 4 beautiful brembo calipers on all 4 wheels not just on two. True rwd or awd car unlike Integra which is fwd or fwd biased. You even get rear heated seats.

On certain models I have to agree, I have a 20RDX and am very dissapointed in the turbo engine performance (why it couldn't have been a souped up hybrid I'll never understand) I have also experienced better climate control systems in geo metros as well. Hopefully it at least holds up on the reliability side.

Acura rep probably told them and have them sign an agreement to not mention the g70 since it is actually the most direct competitor. You get more bang for the buck with the g70 and Acura doesn’t want people to know that so that they can keep their current customers and attract new potential customers. Automotive politics are being played by the car manufacturers and car reviewers. Like why wouldn’t the reviewers mention the obvious (g70)?!
