It really showed his ignorance though. The schedules in the USA (not counting the NFL) are notoriously hard. NBA plays 100 games with 50 games played on the road spread out over 3000 miles. UK is the size of Alabama, they can literally drive to their road games and not bother staying in hotels for months out of the season . MLB plays nearly 200 games a year with nearly 70 three day road trips . His ignorance is laughable

@@MatthewMcRowan The NHL is really brutal though. 82 games in a season and then another potential 28 games in the playoffs. These guys play consistently 3 games per week all season. A much tougher sport than football that is played with a higher intensity. The players often play through injuries like broken ribs and bruises.

    • @ogbmt
      @ogbmt Před rokem +7

@@johndurrer7869 The NBA has an 82 game regular season, and then 16/30 teams continue to the playoffs. The playoffs are a 4 round knockout tournament with each round being best of 7 games. They also recently introduced a short play in tournament between the regular season and playoffs which essentially gives 6 more teams a chance to steal a spot in the playoffs.
The maximim number of games a team can play in the play in tournament is 3, and then the maximum number of games a team can play in the playoffs is 28, so the absolute longest possible season would be 113 games, but realistically a team competing in the play in tournament probably aren't going to make it to the finals.
The longest possible season not including the play in tournament would be 110 games long, but this would only apply to the 2 teams who make the finals. After that 2 more teams could have a 103 game season, 4 more could have an 96 game season and so on. It is also very unlikely for every playoff series to last as long as 7 games, most of the teams who make the finals will win their first round in 4 or 5 games, and even if it's more competitive it can easily be over in 6.
Even in the hypothetical scenario of all series going to 7 games, allowing the longest possible season for each team, the average length of the season for a team is around 90 games.
So it's not quite as many as 100 games, but I would say the reality is actually harder than what you've described. The entire regular season is played between late October and early April. The playoffs then take place from mid April to usually about mid June.
Focusing on just the regular season highlights the main problem. Over a period of about 5 and half months, the teams are playing 82 games. This time period also includes an 8 or 9 day break for the all star weekend event. So overall, they play 82 games in a period of about 160 days, including all of the travel as you mentioned.
This results in a lot of "back to backs" where teams play games on consecutive days. Also over the last 20 or so years, the NBA has been changing the rules in quite a few ways to allow less physical contact, speed up the play and increase the scoring. These changes combined with the busy schedule have created conditions causing a very serious increase in the number of serious long term knee, ankle, hip and back injuries.
This isn't just American ignorance, it's a consequence of the fundamentally unhealthy and terrible work culture they have in America. People in normal jobs often get only like 5-10 days of holiday a year vs the 20-25 which is common here, and apparently the culture is such that people are seen as lazy if they even take all of their days of holiday.
A Premier League all star game might be kinda fun, but I have to say it seems like a pretty terrible idea in reality. A north/south all star game also doesn't make sense. The east/west all star game format in the NBA has worked because there are 30 permanent teams, half in the western conference and half in the eastern conference, with no relegation/promotion, and very rarely any team additions or relocations. In the premier league you could have teams like Wolves being part of the north and south in alternating seasons depending on which teams are promoted and relegated.
The MLB schedule is even worse than the NBA, but then the sport itself is not nearly as physically intensive. I don't know much about it though really.

That is the idea behind an All-Star game. In the US its used to bring all the best players together to play what amounts to an exhibition. Players who would normally not play with each other are gathered for a couple of days of skills demonstrations and then a game that usually is high scoring due to a decided lack of defensive tactical cohesion.
But between sponsors, television revenue and ticket revenue this one game a year can bring in a ton of money, as Todd Boehly noted by saying that last years MLB All-Star game brought in $200 million. And he suggested that such revenue could be used to help raise up the lower level teams a little due to the huge gap between the Premier League and the Championship League, a gap that massively damages the quality of the teams that end up on the cycle of winning promotion only to be so weak as to immediately get relegated.
And Klopp's only real issue was the need for a time to fit it in. I don't think he realizes that with the exception of the NFL all of the All-star games occur mid-season. The leagues schedule a 3-4 day break in the schedule to fit in the All-star game and then return to the regular game schedule. The MLB even uses it to decide which league (National or American) gets to be the "host" for the World Series as the team from the league that wins the All-Star game gets to host the first 2 games of that year's World Series and if the series goes the full 7 games will host 4 of those games.
I don't know if the idea is workable, but Todd never said that it would definitely work. What he was noting was that association football in England needs to look at ways to add some revenue in an attempt to improve the finances of teams that struggle to maintain Premier League quality and that such improvements might improve the sport overall. Its an insightful observation from a business man who has been successful in multiple industries and understands what increase funding can do to improve a team.

Boehly seems to think that now he's owner of Chelsea he has some kind of influence or 'leverage' (very American word!) on the Premier League, and in how it operates. He has much to learn. He has very limited influence. He will not be able to tell Premier League chiefs what to do and how to run their sport.

@@phoenix2225 ...ah, but they can all be overruled by the Premier League itself....as it is the PL who ultimately make decisions about minor rule changes, and how the league is structured - not individual club owners or a group of them - regardless of how much money they have individually or collectively.
As I said, this isn't America or the UAE. Yes, we allow our clubs to be bought by owners from these countries, but they don't have the power to bend the league to their will or get what they want all the time. It's a democratic process which requires votes, and rounds of voting (about like in Cup competitions!).
Boehly will almost certainly never get what he wants - the PL split up into two parts: North, and South. This set up works in America because it's a huge country and the wide distances between alot of cities necessitate having such a set up.
But it's absolutely pointless having this set up here. You would also have the ridiculous situation whereby Wolves are in the Northern section, while Aston Villa are in the Southern section - when the two clubs are about 10 miles apart. It's just bonkers!
Fans would be outraged and would rightly protest outside all the PL stadiums. It''s impossible to even raise the idea of scrapping the Boxing Day, and NY Day fixtures and having a blanket two week break over Christmas and the New Year.
This is tradition, and when you mess with tradition especially in football, and in English football, then you are inviting big trouble. Fans wouldn't accept having these two fixtures scrapped or of a total two week break over the Christmas period. And neither would they accept the PL being split in two based on geography.
If you upset fans then you will get much more than you bargained for. And this even extends to billionaire club owners. They think they can do what the hell they like - but they cannot. Boehly will find this out sooner rather than later. It's going to be a VERY steep learning curve for him.
