Free kick challenges, crossbar challenge, skills challenge, fastest player, etc etc. NO game, just the best showing off with little risk if injury.

A) An all-star game would be extremely hard to fit in an already congested calendar. It's not the same as the nba/nfl where they have long off-seasons. Such an idea will run these players to the ground before we know it. B) An all-star game would basically be a testimonial. It would be played at that lethargic pace. Nobody would want to get hurt. Nobody would care who won. From an entertainment perspective, it's a terrible look. C) Trying to apply the standards of American sport to european competitions suggests of a lack of cultural awareness/respect from him for the game in this country. His idea completely transcends football rivalries which in itself goes against the spirit of European football - something Americans unfortunately don't understand. With the exception of the WC, the Euros, Copa America, who on earth would want to watch Liverpool players alongside United players, Arsenal players alongside Tottenham players? Any true football fan would not want that in the slightest. D) Let's get this straight. This is just blatant greed by an owner disguised as innovative thinking. I'm sure there's a general consensus among the american community that all-star games for the likes of the NFL, NHL and NBA are the biggest waste of time that serve zero purpose whatsoever other than a blatant money grab.
Its 1 game in a season. We already have useless cup like charity shield and another useless cup league cup. Its more about enterntainment and money with lot less effort. So doesnt matter the pace. I wouldn't be against it. But clearly Boehly hasn't thought the whole thing through. When the season ends players normally have some international duty to get to. That's I'm addition to the 3 or 4 breaks during the season. Players need resting periods to take time off, go on holiday. If something could be worked out whenever it might be then I'd watch a PL All star game but now it doesn't seem realistic. Besides if that happens, fans who pay money to attend the game will want to see some effort by the players and depending on when it is and players' concerns about potentially getting injured in an exhibition game we may not see proper effort by the players

EFL is responsible for all levels of football in England except the PL.

And they would be offended by the term used by Todd" lesson " is because they felt like he was staying that the Americans have a better game system back home than England. Of course they will be offended.
Part of the reason football has taken so long to develop in the US is this incessant need to "Americanize" it. Play-offs, a draft, the pay to play system for development, etc. I guess they were trying to cater to an American audience but it is the arrogance of this country to not follow what clearly works and has been working for decades in the rest of the world. And as an American idgaf about an all-star game in any sport, I've always thought it was a pointless concept.

@@robert2690 A fair point when it comes to leagues with insane amounts of money invested into them and we're only seeing the wealth disparity grow each year. But in the past many leagues across Europe maintained a competitive structure where any number of teams had the opportunity to win their league. And historically in American sports championships are still dominated by big market teams with exception of the NFL.
@@marcuskittlesen3420 Even this idea falls flat. The American sports league probably offer the widest variety of champions. We’ve seen time and time again that big clubs have always dominated Europe and they go on for years. In the NBA, San Antonio became a dynasty, OKC, became a perennial contender, Cleveland won a fucking championship. That will never exist in the EPL or other football leagues across Europe, it would be impossible.
No, the reason soccer failed in the US was BECAUSE we followed the European system. That's why they implemented the drafts and other rules to prevent overspending. MLS is one of the fastest growing league btw. So yea, we did followed "what's clearly worked" and failed, hence the improvisation.
Soccer has never done well anywhere in the world where it has had competition from other sports. US, Canada, India and China are prime examples. Soccer doesn't do well when it competes with other sports. Soccer traditions in the world are century old if not older. America jsut started this and as saturated as the American sports scene is with all the sports, the fact that soccer exists in America is a testament all by itself. I am old enough to remember the creation of the PL. Soccer in the 1980s was horrible on and off the pitch. American sensibilities have gentrified the sport and made it better.
@@JW-be8wf Yes, because small teams like Milwaukee and Cleveland will never win championships if it were a European model. Imagine Giannis and lebron was signed by a rich team like NY or LA. You see that pretty often in a European model. That’s why small European teams will never win anything.
I agree, but American basketball is nothing like English football. I pray that the ******le boring Americans keep their boring NFL over there and leave us alone. Americans love to ruin sports. They are experts at it.
American owners are never scrutinised for the way they run English football clubs where as other owners from nationalities like Russia, China or the Arab countries such as Saudi Arabia and Qatar are under constant surveillance. The Bundesliga ownership model is way, way better as the fans are more front and centre of things and the owner is held more accountable.

I think he is looking at it from a business perspective. He might think that these ventures would make the premier league more profitable. Of the top 10 most expensive sports franchises, how many of them are in america?
Just compare viewership of any American sports league with the Premier League. Almost none of them come even close to the Premier League's average viewership. Debate settled.
At least Boehly is giving ideas on how to protect the lower-tier leagues by creating and allocating additional revenue for it. The only FA that came up was selling Wembley and even that the pundits hated.
To be fair, Lukaku brought up having an All-Star game before Boehly was around. Also, as an American I think the EPL is fine as is and needs no changing (to the format at least) - Boehly doesn’t speak for me.
Not a fan of American owners but what’s so bad about an all star game? It can generate revenue and talking points. Players will have an extra motivation to work towards as qualifying for the teams may add value in time to come
All star games have no sportive reason, there’s nothing at stake. Even in america intrest in all star games has dropped significantly compared to regular league games for this reason. Let’s not forget that this is a sport first and not just entertainment. It’s not about creating ‘commercial value’, it’s about finding out which team is the best on the field.
Because football isn't a spectacle. There are real stakes involved. Players represent TEAMS that represent COMMUNITIES. You don't support individual players, you support a CLUB. An all-star game is a plastic, tacky, spectacle for low-effort supporters. It would only increase the risk of injuries and lower the intensity of rivalries. It's a gimmick intended to make money.
I would not mind an all star game where all 20 teams are split between two all star teams based on their rankings at the half season. Each team has to contribute at least one of their players to their designated all star team and the teams that are part of the all star team that wins the game all get awarded 3 points in the rankings. That would create drama, entertainment and a sense of purpose that is not often seen in all star games.
For what ? There is a reason all star games are generally made for benefit stuff, as a last game for a legend retiring, and years later as ceremonial stuff between seasons. They are boring, there already enought old legends doing that stuff. They dont mean anything, could make people injured, players already struggle to have time with their family. They would hurt the club culture even more as it is already. Footballers playing for different clubs, suddenly showing that they are just a pay check no cultur.
You can say I disagree with all star game idea because of A, B, C, ..... What's wrong with sharing an idea with other people? If you disagree with someone's ideas, just say it, not attack the person personally. I disagee with all star game. The all star game will make players be exposed to injuries. EPL should pay much more attention to prevent its players from injuries. EPL players already play too many games. So many good players can't play because of their injuries. I disagree with all star game idea.

When people say American idea or Americanisation people mostly mean the top 1% of the country rather than the common people from America. Nobody has got anything against the normal people.
The Premier League has one of the best structured leagues in the world. They don't need an All Star Games. In fact I believe American leagues like the MLS should take certain aspects from the Premier League and apply it to theirs like the concept of promotion and relegation.

However, there will also be a lot of parallels. There will be a level of rationality to his view, even if they appear counter-intuitive.
No. Like many American team owners that buy into the Premier League, really have trouble understanding the competition, Randy Lerner famously didn't get what relegation was all about and he failed to invest in Aston Villa because he wanted to sell (upset that there is no guaranteed profits in the EPL), nobody cared to buy a team that was about to drop, which it did and Lerner lost a bundle.

It's good for change but for something as complicated as the premier league to alter it's system for such a small game it feels unnecessary
It's part of a much greater wave of American-led commercialization of European football. How can you not see the connection between Boehly's attitude and things like the Super League?
Chelsea are becoming a real circus act aren’t they? First they was the oil club now it’s slowly becoming a circus club. What a joke of an owner to come out with such a ridiculous statement. That would never work here. No chance
Carragher is going to be disappointed the day the American owners of Chelsea, Man United, Arsenal and Liverpool decide to do whatever they want with the clubs they own. Maybe a tournament involving the other US owned teams like AC Milan and Roma, idk. The thing is the Premier League has accepted their money and once they are the owners there isn't much to prevent them from managing their clubs as they see fit.

People hate change for some reason and people with ideas. Yeah I agree his ideas won't work but good on him for suggesting some. He bought a club for 2.5 billion he has a right to have his say.
I think a big point that’s being missed is that Boehly is pushing for more money going to the lesser clubs. Yes let’s disagree on how it’s done, but the bottom tier clubs definitely need more funds & support!

Henry with some Avengers level sensitivity
Having watched the Premier league most of my life but grown up in Canada - I have always loved how the Prem/EFL is structured compared to North American sports - 7 game playoff series, no real glory in winning the league, etc.
With that said, I’ve seen the ‘skills competitions’ they do in the NHL and the likes, and I think that’s something players and fans could get behind. Free kick challenges, crossbar challenge, skills challenge, fastest player, etc etc. NO game, just the best showing off with little risk if injury.
No..just no!
no. the skills competitions are so lame.
It's American to Speak On a League You Don't Know... :)

Preseason was also the same. Championship already does playoffs despite having long season and they enjoy it alot. The money goes to football pyramid.
U R NOT RIGHT NBA SEASON IS 82 GAMES PL ONLY 40 GAMES. IF U INCLUDE PLAYOFF NBA ITS MORE THEN U CAN TALK BOUT CUPS IN EUROPE. BUT POINT IS , ALLSTAR GAME IS ONLY CHARITY WORTH IT. HENRY IS RIGHT CONSTRUCTED LEAGUE IS GREAT U DONT GO TO NBA AND SAY DONT DO DUNK CONTEST ANYMORE.
You can make Best team of the season but how can you make and all-star game in England which need two team to compete in this all-star game ? North vs South ? How many Premier league club in the North and in the South ?
This idea is simply an ignorrant of human being who thing he know everything and everything normal for him is normal for everyone.
Course you wouldn't, mate. You've got no real affinity to the league. If the Serie A had all the money, you'd be supporting an Italian team.

They have been in the game longer than Him. They have won titles and been even described as legends. So really their not just pundits, they are heroes of their respective clubs. And they understand deeply that the Premier league itself is a a complicated system that can not be easily altered for 1 tiny game.

An All Star game would be so good!

What's wrong with sharing an idea with other people? If you disagree with someone's ideas, just say it, not attack the person personally. I disagee with all star game.
