This episodes makes me laugh and tear up Homer’s sadness is heartbreaking while the part when he says “this just gets worse and worse” makes me laugh it’s a controversial episode
For people who seem salty about it. Keep in mind that Mona was always away on "fights for the environment" instead of being a mother to Homer. Instead of staying with him and raising him properly she went out of her way to protest with hippies. Sure it was for good reasons but here she is, coming back after abandoning him in his childhood, then later on and once more by pretending to die. While this time she could stay she didn't even seem to grasp why Homer wouldn't trust her with this, the last time everytime he felt remotely close to her she was taken away. I guess that fear got to him and made him resentful towards her. And even after her death, her wishes were about ruining Burn's plans, once again showing that all she cared about was going out of her way to fight for the environment rather than just leave it. Just once she could have but she didn't.
Takedrugskillabear except Burns was a supervillain complete with a missile. What? They couldn't go bigger? Bring in some Captain Planet villains. Oh that's too over the top? If you want earnest episodes do it right.
Takedrugskillabear But she couldn't be a mother to him because she was a wanted criminal. When she first comes back, she explains that she was IDed by Burns so if she had stayed, Abe would've been an accomplice leaving no one to take care of Homer. She left because it was in everyone's best interests. Did she think things would play out as they did? I don't know. But things happened and she did the only thing she could. Heck, even 25 years later Burns is still salty about the affair and gets a tank, the police and the FBI to arrest her. So honestly, I don't blame her.
But the problem here is the episode doesn’t seem to let us take in the sadness that we’re supposed to feel. It was ruined with Abe and his tap dancing shoes.
I though the same thing about Mona. I think she is the character of Springfield who hurt the most Homer. She come back at home only a few hours before her death after a life of sterile militantism to reconciliate with her son. She was egoistic and stupid, the love his son needed worth better than a bunch of stupid hippies. In fact, despite his weaknesses Homer is a way better parent than Mona and Abraham Simpson.
I never understood how she died so suddenly in this episode. I haven't notice at one single point in this episode before her death that she shows hint of that, she seemed pretty fine. I thought she felt so guilty that she intentionally committed suicide and poisoned herself or something. I mean why she made a video of herself for the family, knowing she will eventually die and how did she planned to ruined Burn's project even after her death.
No it hurts so much because of how common it is tho many people at my grandma's funeral... Some people had loose ends or bad notes they left on regretting it feels shame more than missing her
Sorry, but this episode just shows why The Simpsons really dropped in quality and are just a shadow of what they were. The episode where his mom comes back and leaves ends with silence. Homer just sits on his car, looks at the sky and reflects on what has happened. No words, no jokes, no one-liners, just letting the emotions of the episode play out. With a show mainly about characters you need to give the audience the chance to breathe and have their own thoughts. Here they can't go for one second before shoving in a joke after an important character died. Did the writers feel the need to cram in a gag about Abe with tap dancing shoes mere seconds after we're shown that Homer's mom and his wife died? Family Guy has often been called a cheap Simpsons knock-off, despite having had a very different tone and style to it from day one. The irony is that The Simpsons have dropped to exactly that level without being funny while doing it.
Corristo89 the reason why this episode was so emotional and not about the jokes, is because this episode was made to honour dan crestellas (the voice of homer) mother because IRL she really died. The episode was about making an attachment between the actors real life’s and their characters.
I know that, I'm just saying that Mona's death has handled very poorly and shows that the Simpsons are now more about shoving in cheap gags and and one liners you could easily follow up with a laugh track. If you want to see how a beloved character should be killed off due to the voice actor dying/leaving, watch the South Park Episode "The Return of Chef" (S10E1).
I don't really mind much the Abe gag since it's bittersweet in hindsight (a disrespectful gag would be him actually dancing). Plus there's actually an act break after Mona's death. However, I do agree that this episode shows the difference in writing quality between seasons. Everything was going well during this episode, but they felt the sudden urge to turn the plot into a cartoonish James Bond parody. It just shows how the show isn't character-driven anymore.
Corristo89 i agree that the old episodes are heaps better but the new ones are still not as unfunny as Family Guy is so they are not in the same level as you put it. Even the newer episodes are a lot better than any Family Guy episode.
Oh.....My mother was similar. And whilst I'm not a food addift like Homer I used other items to substitute for love.....These early Simpsons episodes were so emotional and human. You watch them as an adult with a new view
Dan's acting as Homer here was really top notch and upsetting to listen to. The words of "Mom, mom?" When he finds her dead in the chair is too heartbreaking 💔 😢 I'm not ready for when my mother dies someday. 😩 It's a wound that will never heal.
Every now and then the writers know how to pull on the heart strings.... this episode is not easy to watch as I always think of ppl who have lost their mothers and the fact my turn will come someday which I forever dread but fact of life.... lesson here life too short, try and forgive your loved ones as keeping resentment up to their death is pain not worth holding

I'm so sorry for your loss. Losing a mother is something no one should ever have to experience. When my great-grandmother past 5 years ago, I truly felt broken inside. Then I remembered some of the great times I've had with her, hopefully you can remember the good times you had with with your mother as well. My thoughts and prayers go out to you and the rest of your family.
I swear I remember the scene after having Homer say “and she died thinking I hated her”, and while it doesn’t look like he says that outright, it’s still true and it’s absolutely heartbreaking
This beyond heart breaking. Anytime I have a fight with my mom, this is litterly my biggest fear, not being able to say sorry and forgive each other. Probably the reason why I make up after about half an hour. Mother simpson is my favorite episode. The car scene at the end is my favourite scene in all of the Simpsons and to find out this how it ends isnt nice. Newer Simpsons writers dont know what there doing.
Its horrible how they ruined the Simpsons, I'm just going to have my memory in the old simpsons and forget that this happend. The newer writers ruined it just for episodes. A big fuck you to them.

Man, this wrecks me. Clip starts with Homer practically disowning Mona (who would blame him, given her antics with him and Abe with all the protesting) yet. When he changes course, he loses her.
It’s sad how Mona died thinking that Homer couldn’t forgive her, but at least they later had closure in Heaven 😃😃 Another thing. After Homer refused Mona’s tuck-in and she went downstairs, the way she was speaking sounded like she knew she was about to die 🤔🤔🤔
to think Homer went through thinking that his mother had died after abandoning him multiple times and when she does come back to stay she basically died in front of him
Honestly, I don't blame Homer for being angry. Every time he needed a mother the most, Mona wasn't there. She always chose her cause over her son. You could say she took the risk every time she came home to see Homer, but the truth is because she knew she was on the lamb and would have to leave again she basically played with Homer's emotions. This was even worse when she faked her death with that prison bus crash because Homer looked for any hidden message to try to make himself believe she was okay and then eventually gave up on that and accepted that she was "gone." So I'm sorry, but Homer isn't in the wrong here and I feel like the whole Mona storyline wasn't handled well after we first saw her.

It's never really specifically addressed, but Mona's relationship with Homer puts Abe into some interesting context. He was clearly a terrible father (see the advice he gave Homer on his first day of school), but he was always there.
Worst part about watching this is that this connects with me on a very personal level. I lost my mother late into the night and she died with her eyes open....
Oh man I’m sorry... that sucks to even think about.
Oh no 😔
Honestly sometimes I get flashbacks to that very moment and it feels like it had only happened a few hours ago.
Awhhh she gave up because Homer wouldn’t accept her.
She was a terrible, insensitive mother
@@joaoignacio1978 I agree I honestly don't know why people like her so much.
@@davidhonez8859 Because unlike most people, she learned she was a bad parent. She apologized and tried to reconnect + be there for him.

After years of weird episodes in these modern times the simpsons touches my feelings once again
Homer's reaction to his mum passing is what made me cry

'She said I didn't suck?'
"-That bad."

All this time, I didn't realize that Homer had his mom cremated instead of burying her in the grave.

(Days after the funeral)
Homer: (overcomes with anger) Why'd she have to die?! Why couldn't I save her?! I know I could have!

Homer: Boy, my mother wasn't there for me, but goddammit. I will make you, Lisa, Maggie, Mona, Orville, Marjorie, and Hugo proud.
It's sad that Mona Simpson and Clancy Bouvier died. It must have been hard for Homer to loose his mother and Marge to loose her father.😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢
It's just sad like Raye misses her parents ever since she was six years old
What killed her
Her age?
Or her broken heart?

so sad😭
jackmen4 her broken heart
broken heart and the guilt of always leaving Homer for which can't be helped because she's a wanted worldwide.
It's actually Homer's fault too for not understanding her situation enough and thus making her feel guilty of not being a good mother for him.
Her guilty to have been a monstrous mother
I chose to believe that it was age.

burns would have killed them all
For people who seem salty about it.
In fact, despite his weaknesses Homer is a way better parent than Mona and Abraham Simpson.
for a modern day episode, this brings tears to my eyes
I could never watch this episode in its entirety because of Homer losing his mom (for the fourth and final time) 😢
I never understood how she died so suddenly in this episode.
I know this comment is three years old. But it's confirmed she died of a broken heart 💔
Marija Dunsmore that makes sense, some people find anything to nitpick at the Simpsons it’s sad.
The words of "Mom, mom?" When he finds her dead in the chair is too heartbreaking 💔 😢
I'm not ready for when my mother dies someday. 😩
It's a wound that will never heal.
The fact they disrespected her death some seasons later is such an insult..
Mona was also a key point in Homer's life, that character deserved better.
He never got the chance to apologize to her...
I remember watching this as a kid and being super crushed. Gotta remember that Homer is basically a child in an adults body.
I hate how these always poke at my heart, RIP momma.
... I cried..
This is the saddest episode idc. Every time I hear that song a mother and son reunion it makes me think of this episode and makes me sad smh

I swear I remember the scene after having Homer say “and she died thinking I hated her”, and while it doesn’t look like he says that outright, it’s still true and it’s absolutely heartbreaking
That moment she died , tears fell from my eyes like when my Grandma died
This has to be the most rushed conflict and death for such a great character. The Simpsons used to be so great.
Yeah the death needed a bit more time.
The saddest moment ever :'(
When raye hino lost her parents ever since 1986 in the summer she was crying and crying and crying when after her old house burned down her parents were going to try to save them but it was too late they were crushed by all this rubble and burned into a crisp and they went to the hospital and then the funeral and then she moved to her grandfather's place and then her grandfather comfort her and made her feel better she will meet him again as ghosts every time😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢

This broked my hart 😢💔
"I’m fighting the robber, you go get ice cream!”
Homer: (throws an emotional rant) IT'S ALL MARGE'S FAULT! SHE'S JEALOUS! SHE'S HOLDING ME BACK!
You can see the expression on homers face when he realises his mother was in her chair unresponsive
Aw my homie God bless you man
Man, this wrecks me. Clip starts with Homer practically disowning Mona (who would blame him, given her antics with him and Abe with all the protesting) yet. When he changes course, he loses her.
It’s sad how Mona died thinking that Homer couldn’t forgive her, but at least they later had closure in Heaven 😃😃
Another thing. After Homer refused Mona’s tuck-in and she went downstairs, the way she was speaking sounded like she knew she was about to die 🤔🤔🤔
I filled the hole in my heart with food but I’m never full
How the hell did I miss this episode?? Damn...
I don't like these seasons very much, but i can say that specific chapter broke my heart in a hundred pieces
to think Homer went through thinking that his mother had died after abandoning him multiple times and when she does come back to stay she basically died in front of him
this scene made me cry😭
That face. You recognize it when you've been in mourning.
1:30 I dont know about you but that hurt homer been through a lot.
3:05 is the scene
Honestly, I don't blame Homer for being angry. Every time he needed a mother the most, Mona wasn't there. She always chose her cause over her son. You could say she took the risk every time she came home to see Homer, but the truth is because she knew she was on the lamb and would have to leave again she basically played with Homer's emotions. This was even worse when she faked her death with that prison bus crash because Homer looked for any hidden message to try to make himself believe she was okay and then eventually gave up on that and accepted that she was "gone."
So I'm sorry, but Homer isn't in the wrong here and I feel like the whole Mona storyline wasn't handled well after we first saw her.
This is the saddest moment in the simpsons💔
