In US news and current events today, this Black delivery driver got his truck blocked in a gated community because a neighbor wanted to know ‘how he got the gate code.' Travis Miller was making a delivery in the Ashford Hills gated community in Oklahoma. On his way out, the Homeowner’s Association president blocked him in and called the cops.
After being held for about 30 minutes, Miller called his dispatcher. Eventually, the Oklahoma man Miller delivered to came out and talked to his neighbor, saying he rightfully had the code.

Actually, they're asking why a black man is on their street. If it was a white driver, they would've just understood he was making deliveries. But a black man in a truck? He could be a burglar so racist people have to stop him and demand answers.

William Rutherford it is though? The delivery person doesn’t have the right to tell what they are delivering. If the item is outside then it is no longer in his hands and he doesn’t have to worry about it. It is on the residents property so they have received the item. If they are fine with letting people see the product then so be it but the deliverer has no right to tell people what and where they are delivering
You know things are F-ed up when the guy who was unlawfully detained, while doing his job is the one who had to talk to the police to make sure it didn't look like he was fleeing.

(form the UK but most of this applies to US as well). The man should be arrested, if he was on private property then the man can tell him to leave, only then can he phone the police to escort the driver off of his property. If this is a state that allows a person to shoot on site at someone on their property I don't believe that this applies to communal private property. Blocking a person to entrap them on the property without a just cause is unlawful detainent and is illegal.

I have learned from watching horror videos about HOA'S that one should never buy in an HOA controlled property. Be careful though because I see that some never learn until closing that they are in an HOA. Get the By-laws before you make an offer, If they won't give them to, you do not want to live there.

For someone to have to deal with this type of behavior is absolutely crazy. Some people want so bad to be important but they never will be. This type of behavior is completely unacceptable. If companies start saying, we don’t deliver to that area I wonder if they would change how they treat and approach people. This is absolutely disgusting.

Agreed! I live in Tulsa, and I see all types of delivery drivers going through gated communities and no one ever stops them because they know they are doing their job.

Here in PG County, Maryland, there a lot of affluent black homeowners and HOA board members that are just as petty. Plenty of black delivery guys get this treatment too, unless the neighbors already know them. So there are times when it's racism, but a lot of times where it's a class thing too, sad to say.

for what? giving a delivery person the gate code? if there is not a security guard to accept packages and then deliver them to each of the homes, then each person, on that private road, has legal authority to offer use to whomever they want, excluding unlawful traffic. I guess Mr. President would then have to figure out how to budget that guards pay because the HOA is typically a set cost yearly, at least all the ones I have experienced.

@@druid_zephyrus gated communities usually don't have guards, they only have the gate as control. The home owner who wanted the delivery gave out the gate code.
@@kei2142 I worked for a client that lived in a gated community. He gave me the code to get in; which I used everyday that I worked for him. If you are on foot, you could walk around the gate, or under the gate. . The booth did not have a guard in it. It is not as security efficient as they believe it to be.
I had an almost exact same encounter when driving in a rural neighborhood. Thankfully the person blocking me wasn’t as antagonistic and immediately got out of my way when I explained why I was there (I shouldn’t have had to though).
Still infuriating that us POC have to constantly prove our actions and intent cause nosy neighbors want to entertain themselves

It's like if you get buzzed into an apartment building, you don't need to tell anyone whose unit you're visiting. You are allowed to be on the shared portion of the property because you were given permission by one of the people who lives there.

As a Amazon delivery driver that delivers in a well known racist town in Arkansas I can attest that this is nothing compared to what I go through. Sad but true.

Sure but the Drivers making it more Complicated then he needs to have it,He can explain the Privacy of his customer and let him know whats going on and be on his way,Private property is private property if hes the President of the Co Op then yes he has authority to some point but the driver was let in, on the flip side when I was younger trucks would rob whole houses take everything before you knew and a leave it not hard to get by a gate and there nothing wrong with concern for your area
Hearing him say, "Tom, it's a bad day" got to me, he seriously didn't want to deal with their bs
It somehow gave me perspective too, straight into the feels.
It is MENTALLY AND EMOTIONALLY EXHAUSTING BEING BLACK IN THIS COUNTRY. That is just a snippet of the bs we deal with.

I had that happen to me when I was waiting for an Uber outside the house of this girl I dated back in college. Two of her neighbors were asking me what was my business here and that I looked suspicious since I kept staring at my phone (since I was looking how far was the Uber) so they had to check on me lol I was like fam I’m just waiting for an Uber you guys would calling me a racist if the roles were reversed and I did what you guys are doing right now. They just laughed and said my bad and went back home.
Brother there was NOTHING I would have done differently, you handled yourself as professional as anyone could have in this situation..... I’m pointing and yelling at the screen as I watch this meanwhile you maintained super cool... big ups to you and stay safe.
He should press charges against these guys because he has proof of unlawful detainment as he said.

For those concerned, this is my cousin. During this time we had dealt with two very close deaths in the family within 2 days of one another. No, he didn’t have the mental capacity to deal with that nonsense. He handled it the best he could and got out safely. Legal matters were taken outside of all of this against that HoA “president”.
Tell your cousin he did a great job keeping calm and being professional. Hopefully he'll have fewer bad days and more days when he can just get on with his job without having to deal with idiots.

My home is in a community like that Dorset hollow morristown new Jersey.. i purchased a townhouse in the community and the second day i was there i went walking in my pajamas just around the block, my neighbor called the police on me, i waved and said hello and was very polite, as i was coming back to my street the police pulled up and ask have heard of a disturbance in the area, i said nope, and used my remote to open my garage and walked in..
Yep, record record record. I have a dash cam in my car and ring cams on the outside of my house and obviously we all have our phones on us.

I have literally gone through both gated communities and locked(very poorly) gates in my job delivering groceries and since I got the company's uniform I have never ever had someone bat an eye at what I am doing. Wtf is wrong with the people of whatever place this was?

@@kei2142 Its not I drive one and it's a regular sized van, he was driving a full on truck. But even then I've NEVER have had this issue, I've had people stare at me and give me glares, but never confront me while I'm making deliverys.
It looked like a cube van used to deliver light freight. And from what I could see it looked pretty shiny and tidy.
The driver looks dressed as you'd expect a delivery person to be, he's clearly sober, and wasn't secretive or dodgy about why he was there.
Even if the old dude was out of line blocking the driver in the first place, if he was genuinely concerned, a couple seconds of conversation- *even if it wasn't polite* -should have been all it took to allay any fear of funny business.
The driver was right about his exact purpose being none of his business, and he didn't owe the old guy an ounce of politeness.

I wish a neighbor had stopped them. Cops said it could've been young people who live there with parents or you could just slide in behind a car if u really want to get in.

They might do although all the residents would have to be informed and delivery drivers would still have to be informed.
He claimed to own 1/18 of the property but so did the person who was having a delivery so it did give him any extra entitlement.
As if the whole neighborhood isn't wired up with closed circuit cameras....of course it is. Paranoid people are scary!

Great point which I definitely missed in the picture posts on twitter. At first I thought why not just communicate the delivery (which he did) And still these guys held him in a big obvious delivery truck no less lol ppl r v nosey (often for good reasons)
