Ranking EVERY F1 World Champions' Final Race!

- čas přidán 31. 05. 2024
- In one of my previous videos, I ranked every F1 Champions’ debut race. Now we’re going to the opposite end of their times on the grid and rank their final races. A lot will have happened in the intervening time period, including, you know, becoming a Champion. And as with before, there’s quite a variety in terms of how these men saw out their time in Formula 1. As with before, we’re going to rank the drivers based not just on how they drove, but also on how the weekend went as a whole, as they can’t be blamed for things such as breakdowns, accidents that weren’t their fault, or struggling in awful cars. It also goes without saying that Fernando Alonso, Lewis Hamilton, and Max Verstappen will not be appearing on this list for the obvious reason that unless any of them decide to retire tomorrow, their final race has not happened yet. So, time to rank…almost every F1 Champions’ final race.

I'm sorry, but Ascari should be #1. His last race ended in the most outstanding way ever, and I highly doubt anyone else will ever be able to say "my last race, I sunk a car in the most famous harbor in the world."
highly doubt anyone will say "i won a WDC while dead"
@@vypxn only one person can claim that.
@@vypxn probably cause they are dead?
@@jamielumsdon2926 👍
@@Spike-sk7ql I don't think he CAN claim that...
STILL waiting on Mika to come back from sabbatical.
He kind of did in DTM
And he did for ROC as well
Hi
Mika Häkkinen to drive for Audi from 2026 onwards
Source: trust me bro
Just surprising how out of all 31 drivers, only the top 9 actually managed to finish their last race.
Most don’t leave the sport if they’re doing well.
Poor Jochen and Ayrton! 😅😦
I didn't realise what I was going through when I opened the video, then suddenly it sprung to mind how not all of them had a chance to retire
Who did they even award the trophy in the season Jochen "won?"
@@jrpdude8486 The trophy was given to his widow Nina.
my stupid ass thought this was going to be ranking every last race in a championship lol
That's a great video idea though
@@princeendymion9044 no its a retarded idea
@@princeendymion9044 too toxic tbh. 2021’s placement would divide the whole comment section. (I have 1964 at 1st btw)
It’s a shame AM stopped Seb from finishing the best of the rest yet again in the 6th fastest car. It would’ve been well into the top 6 best last race performance ever
I would put Jim Clark only 3rd. What Hawthorn and Rosberg did - retiring at their Peak after winning their one and only championship in the last race of the season - is imo the greatest thing that can happen to any race driver to walk away in peace with yourself
I would argue that Clark was still in the prime of his career, looking at the constructers for team lotus on the coming years he easily could have won more titles
@@jestring3966 exactly, Clark and Senna were going to fight for the title had they not died in such tragic ways. But Rosberg and Hawthorne should get the nod because they were doing the best after making up their minds on their careers.
Hmmmmmm... Verstappen was robbed, he should be 1st here lol!
@@corpsecoder_nw6746 exactly, hill nearly beat Schumacher in 1994 before Michael had to intentionally crash into Damon to win the championship, which means senna would’ve mostly won in 1994 if not for the accident and also won in 1996 and 1997 if not maybe 1995 too
It's about their standings after their last F1 race. Jim Clark's life ended tragically but not his F1 career.
Edit. No-one knows the true reason for Clark's car failure.
That being the case, he cannot be held to account.
A car failure that is outwith the control of the driver is a chance event. It could happen to any driver. Sadly it happened when Clark was racing at one of Europe's fastest circuits in an F2 race.
Rosberg retired right after beating Lewis Hamilton in equal machinery.
Not funny
@@ameEeeee3 UNO Reverse Card
LOL, poor goat.
@@ameEeeee3 always funny
@@adizMMZ but its overused rn
Oh yeah nobody will beat Ascari in that regard
Bros underrated fr. No doubt he has a case as a top 10 driver ever.
@@LukeTansiongco maybe he scored his championships in a dominant cars, but when you are able to challange Fangio, destroy your teammates and finish p2 on a debut (Monaco), you know you are doing good
Maybe Rindt?
Farina dying in a traffic accident after dropping out of races multiple times due to teammates deaths or close calls is tragic in an especially depressing kind of way.
These great careers really went out how they should have in a way. Respect to all.
I wish you could have included both Schumacher’s last races 06 and 12. He had a mega drive in 06 from a puncture and last.
Then again his true final race saw a puncture and last as well crazy that. But I understand it’s the final race. Even though he had two. 12 is the official final.
Rip rindt and senna and clark
Rindt drove the balance of the 1970 season in the brand new Lotus 72 which was inherantly different and revolutionary being the first car with radiators in side pods. The 49c was the version used for most of 1969 into early 1970 which was introduced following the failure of the 4 wheel drive Lotus 63.
"Keep fighting Michael." 👑 Love that comment by Peter.
The really tragic part about Mike Hawthorn's death is that his young son was also killed, and they only went out to get chips.
As far as I'm concerned Hawthorn only fathered one son who is still alive to this day? In the accident where Hawthorn was killed only he died?
@@enadizenideniz You're right, I just fact-checked my faulty memory! apparently I'd confused hailwood with hawthorn, or the person that told me about it did.
still a sad end for either.
@@theafro yeah I had to look it up because it sounded so shocking! Now that you mention Hailwood: He and his 9 yo daughter actually died in an accident due to a lorry making an illegal turn. It actually says his son was the only survior of the incident and that the lorry driver was fined a ridiculous £100... this is tragic man...
some believe Hawthorn was on a deathwish knowing he only had a couple of years to live tops and was being deliberately reckless. (now the Hawthorn/Hailwood confusion has been cleared up)
@@aifrench14 oh yeah he was diagnosed with something terminal. I read that too
Re. Nigel Mansell, it's a pitty that he ever went to McLaren for '95 as his win at Adelaide in' 94 would have been the perfect send off. Its also a pitty that his team in Indycar (Newman-Haas) were on a downward trajectory as first Penske and then for the rest of the decade Reynard superceded Lola as the car to have in the series which led to Nigel leaving the series after '94.
I think Nigel had an "I'm too old for this shit" moment. Wrestling a car that couldn't handle for shit scared him and he decided it wasn't worth it.
Still it was a great party at Laguna Seca the year he won the CART championship in '93. To bad he didn't stick around. Those Fords got real fast at Indy in '95-'97. A Ford powered car still holds the 1 and 4 lap qualifying record at Indianapolis.
Very insightful video. I'm not surprised to see my man Jim Clark at the top, though. One could argue he died at the very peak of his F1 career: he did not only win his final Grand Prix, but the last three Grand Prix he participated in (the opening round of 1968 and the last two rounds in 1967).
The Ford-Cosworth DFV was just getting sortted. It would've been a whole different ballgame going forward had he lived.
Good video as usual, great job 👍
Interesting video, I disagree with some of the rankings but overall enjoyed the video and learned a few things. Thanks for making!
Impressive video. My feed just sent me here and I confess I have never heard of this channel.
Awesome video as always
Kinda surprising just how many had really lowkey, disappointing endings to their career ...
Very few had the sense to retire while at the top.
This will be a great one
Happy Heavenly Birthday Jimmy (accidently, I've watched this video exactly on March 4th when Clark would turn 87).
Piquet was 2nd on the road in Australia 1991. The race was red flagged , so they took standings from a lap before
Great video as always! Comment for the algorithm.
Crazy how polar opposite some of these are. From winning the title and retiring to losing their lives in the race, can't see a much bigger difference between them
Rindt was killed in a Lotus 72, not a 49. Easy to tell with the revolutionary wedge nose and the radiators in the sidepods.
Senna, that sunny Sunday afternoon that will always be yesterday afternoon.
I love that background track.
This is about perspective.. a racing driver ending his career must to be something epic. Surely Ascari did it, but in some way did Ayrton too..sad but true!
Very good 👍
Rank every race winner next please 🥺
Although the Surtees team left the F1 World Championship in 1978 they continued in the Aurora AFX British F1 championship in 1979 after which the works team was disbanded, however, their cars continuing to be raced in the hands of privateers into the 1980 season in British F1.
The misinformation in this video... Hakkinen will return from his sabbatical any day now!
well thats an interestin video to make ! great
I'm going to be one of those guys, the safety car at Imola, is that not a Cavalier and not a Vectra? :D Anyway I'll stop now, love the video!
in the UK it would have been a Vauxhall Cavalier but Opel never used the name Cavalier, making it a Vectra
This is a cool idea for a video
The wedge shaped Lotus Rindt drove in 1970 was model 72, not 49C.
Also, I wish they had included Jenson's radio message to Alonso saying "he was going to pee on his seat".
The pic at 1:30. The lady in the top middle of pic with floppy hat was Rindt's wife. She would time his laps with her stop watch sitting right there. He did not come around that time and she knew right then it was bad. Saw pics of that years end of season ceremony, she went with Jackie Stewart and picked up the F-1 champ trophy.
It's honestly sad so many were relates with early deaths, wether their own or close one's.
I almost spat out my water when you jumped into Jochen Rindt first thing. I didn't even consider that when I clicked on the video
my main man in the number 1 spot, very happy to see that!
Man, it must suck to die whilst racing as a world champion. I am not joking or being sarcastic in any way
I mean..... to go out while doing something you love is probably one of the best ways to go out.
@@Spike-sk7ql "he died doing what he loved. Well... until the fireball hit him"
Terry Pratchett.
I sincerely doubt it bothered them for very long, if at all!
I think ranking drivers who crashed and died to end their career is rather un classy.
Agree
Its part of the list. Then should he not have ranked senna on the ‘90s list?
Rindt... wow.
So he was dead when he won??? That's mad
Didn't Piquet try to qualify for the Indy 500 twice after retiring from F1?
I'm sure he raced in the Indy race in Brazil too, didn't he?
You mean Hamilton started a rivalry by blaming the team and saying they were favouring Rosberg.
Clark didn't lose control. A tyre failed and fired the car into the trees. He had no control over that.
Piquet not only tried to make the 500 but he wound up breaking both his legs when his car nosed into the Turn 2 wall.
Jochen won Monaco in the 49C and in Zandvoort, debuted the 72
Brilliant.

What was every world champion’s *best* race?
Argue amongst yourselves, class.
Denny Hulme left Brabham for McLaren after winning the championship in 1967. And Brabham retired after the 1970 season, which was rather successful. A win, and should have won at Monaco and Brands Hatch
In my mind he won at BH... only race in history where a DSQ car was reinstated after spending time in their own pit.
No, he lost BH because he ran out of fuel just after the final corner and Rindt overtook him@@skyhigh6089
I don't think Prost "scared Mansell away", and honestly had Nigel stayed, I wholly believe he would have been a 2 X WDC. Thing is, he wouldn't have become a CART champion in 93 either.
As I remember he felt like Prost conspired with Ferrari to make sure he had an inferior car.
@@DrJReefer wouldnt put it past Prost to do such a thing. He most certainly did NOT want another Senna situation on his hands, and Nigel was no pushover. He chased Piquet out of Williams after all. Prost was smart, and very good at the politicking in F1. That goes all the way back to his Renault days against Rene Arnoux.
@@DrJReefer Mansell just hated Prost. It was as simple as that.
@@neilonaniet He's French. Nige is English.
It's in his genes
Prost was a vastly superior driver. Mansell needed the robotic FW14 to correct his constant blunders.
Mika fans waiting for his sabbatical
HOW LONG IS THIS GONNA TAKE
Jim Clark 🏴
It could be argued that from all final races that were final because the driver died in them Rindts was the best because at least he managed to win the championship.
14:57 I understand Hill was suffering from depression that year?
Clark the goat
Wait, Did the cars have cameras on the front as shown in 9:51?
That was for filming for the 1966 movie Grand Prix.
The Ayrton Senna incident would affect badly to F1
Erik Comas, who was being help by Ayrton Senna in SPA 1992 Qualifying would witness Ayrton incident scene. The incident would affect him so bad that he withdrawn from that race and retire from F1 at the end of 1994.
Jochen rindt didn't die on impact. He could have been saved if they had brought him quickly enough to a hospital. He died on the way there.
Jackie Stewart founded his own team in 1997
31, 30.... I'm detecting a theme here...
"At long last he was left alone"
You don't need to watch the video to know who tis is referencing :D
Alan Jones could have been equal top of this list having won his last race in 1981, only to come out of retirement a few years later
Only half way through this but it seems only Nico Rosberg can be at No.1.
Whatever you think, he departed with his head held high and at the pinnacle of the sport.
Edit. Jim Clark at No.1. I'm forgetting my history and can't argue.
So did Prost.
Give us little clips if you can mate😭
im sorry but prost did not scare of mansell as you put it what a load of bull. williams didnt want mansell anymore it was even shown live on tv the mess they made of it. mansell is 1 of the very few drivers who would race anyone in any car.why are people so down on 1 of the most underated f1 drivers ever ?
Sir Jackie should rank just before Farina
That horrific week at imola shouldn't have gone on after ratzenburgers death
14:58 KWAB
gimi
Think Graham Hill should have been higher. I was a triple crown winner after all
This is not about how great they were, but how their last race was.
And Graham's Embassy seasons were a disaster.
Rindt died in Qualifying at Monza so wouldn't Austria have been his last race?
honestly, retiring due to "mental fatigue" was absolutely pathetic, hill should be at the bottom
He suffered from depression for large parts of his career. He finally had enough of with how much he was struggling and didn’t want to risk his safety when he couldn’t bring himself to care
Jochen Rindt should have been no.1 due to being the only F1 Champion posthumous.
Mansell and Hill (Damon) should be at the bottom, due to the shame of retiring a healthy car for no good reason, we're not talking Lauda at Fuji here, that was perfectly justified. Jim Clark has to be the greatest all round racing driver of all time... is there nothing that guy couldn't do?! :)
Sadly Jochen Rindt did NOT get to become champion between his first and final race 😞
I think Senna and Rindt should be swapped. But I can see why they weren’t.
You were far too kind to Damon Hill and Mansell. Both parked undamaged cars petulantly.
Nigel Mansell wasn't petulant, was he? LOL
Particularly Nigel who drove a decent McLaren.
Lotus 72
In formula 1, or you retire like a hero or you race long enough to retire in a blown Engine in a backfield car
Why did no one want to win in 1982? I'm not so knowledgeable on that year
11 drivers won a race that year and nobody won more than two. Didier Pironi almost won the title despite missing the final five races due to a career-ending crash, most teams boycotted Imola, and Monaco went through six different leaders in the final three laps!
A brutal commercial war between FISA (big manufacturers) and FOCA (English teams). Canceled and boycotted races, unreliable Renaults and blatant cheating.
Everyone is bickering about who the GOAT is. Saying it was Senna, Hammilton, Schumacher or even Verstappen… but Jim Clark is hands down the best there ever was.
Seeing Rosbergs career just reaffirms my thought that Hamilton was a selfish teammate, Hamilton tried to take him out multiple times because his TEAMMATE was beating him in points , say all you want about Schumacher but he wouldn’t have ever done that to a teammate
I believe Mansell won his last race in F1. In 1994 after leaving Mclaren he raced twice for Williams, winning the last round in Adelaide if I'm not mistaken
You are mistaken. He was sacked by McLaren after the Spanish GP, where he retired without a mechanical failure complaining of poor handling. The Williams drivers were Hill and Coulthard.
@@skyhigh6089 It seems like I was not mistaken, pole and win in the last race of 1994 in a Williams en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1994_Australian_Grand_Prix
you are very much mistaken, he was dropped by Williams in favour of Coulthard for 95 and did the unthinkable by signing for McLaren (considering the considerable distain between the two in previous years) for the season where it just went so wrong it's beyond belief...
Hawthorn's last race wasn't so great. He needed Ferrari team orders to overtake Hill and win the title.
ok Rosberg should've been 1st, he won a title in his last race against a formidable champion. Hawthorne also deserved 2nd on this list because he had to keep up with Stirling Moss, the greatest driver to never win the world title. Clark was going to keep racing. Rosberg and Hawthorne had made up their minds. Clark had the best final race result and was the finest driver of the top 3, but putting him higher doesn't exactly make sense.
Rosberg's retirement was weirdly controversial at the time ("He's running away!"). Never understood that sentiment. He did what he wanted to do, never was shy talking about why he retired, and he seems to be perfectly at ease with his life now. Seems to me like he's done everything exactly right.
should put vettel there just yet possible return to replace stroll, Vettel announced his retirement when the car was uncompetitive when it was a point scorer i think he regretted it but couldnt change his mind as alonso was already signed. Hakkinen let coulthard pass
Ayrton Senna...F1's Greatest
Abu Dhabi 2021 doesn't count as an official race
It does
Too much salt is bad for your blood pressure.
...So I guess his last race is hitting Vettel at Saudi then lol!
Alonso should retire tomorrow still hope for his last race so I can celebrate
To me, Aytrons last race will always be Adelaide 93. Man, was that a brilliant season from aytron, with a almost 100hp lower engine than bennetton (Who had the better ford engines) and Williams (Who had the best engine with their renault)
Why is Rindt ranked so low? The guy died during the season, and still won the title.
Schumacher should've stayed retired, them mercedes days were brutal..
