  • Today, we're going to take a look at a pretty excellent knife sharpening system, which is just a few minor tweaks away from gem-hood, the Hapstone K1, with Gritomatic Silicon Carbide stones.

    but, with the markings on the jaws and angle marks for reference (KME), you can keep a written record of the last set up, of a particular knife; at least a good place too start for a touch up...just a thought...have a good day...

    I have the Hapstone V7. That system comes with stop collars. I think my main objections are case, portability, and clamping the blade. The M2 has a rare earth magnet to hold the blade that works pretty good. I have been on the fence with diamond vs stones.

    One of the reasons I like the KME is I don't have to use the base when I sharpen the radial portion of a blade. I like to take it off the base and flip it over so I can see exactly where the stone is hitting the blade, however, that large base and additional clamps on the The Hapstone would come in handy for large knives.

  • @cmartell98

    Love my K-1~ I use a stop collar, just a couple bucks. As far as stones go - I use Shapton Glass 500 to 16K, EdgePro Diamond Matrix, and edge pro Kangaroo Leather strops with .5 down to .25 microns for my mirror edge. Bought a few stones at a time as the cost of my stones far exceeds the price of the K-1 System.
    The only change I'd like to see is a knurled height adjustment. AWESOME SYSTEM !

    I have the KMR set up all the way to the 10K whetstone's it works great. But I would like to have a full stroke on a 3 to 4 inch blade that you can't get with a 4 inch sharpening stone. I originally wanted the TS Pro f that wranglerstar had a video on it at the time. I'm in favorite looking at the hapstone system just because of the larger sharpening stones. BTW TS Pro now has a distributor in the United States.

  • @BaliBug
    @BaliBug Před 5 lety

    Nick, the kme doesn’t come with what it takes to mirror polish an edge either you need films or waterstones right? You can very easily add 2 films and get your mirror here .

    • @BaliBug
      @BaliBug Před 5 lety

      Also, no system comes with stone leveling kits, and all SIC and waterstones need to be flattened . You can easily keep them relatively flat but rubbing two stones against each other , and once they need a true flatten you can use some very cheap SIC powder or a diamond stone (both available from gritomatic, the maker ). I say all of this actually not liking the hapstone system.

  • @azhawk516
    @azhawk516 Před 5 lety

    The clamps are kind of a bummer. This type of clamp is not ideal for ffg knives as you have stated. This is also an issue with the Wicked Edge, but at least you can adjust the angle on each side independently, so your bevels match. That is not the case with this system. The KME clamp is great for ffg knives.

  • @dooshlerd
    @dooshlerd Před 5 lety +1

    The further away from the spine the angle adjustment point is, the less the width of the blade impacts the sharpening angle. With this system, there should only be a few degree variance between something narrow like a penknife and something wide like a Manix. The Hapstone will be less affected by blade width than the KME, granted it is still a factor for extreme perfectionists.

    Seems like a solid system.
    The EdgePro is just stupid. It desperately needs a clamping system.
    The Wicked Edge is just too complex and too expensive. Its also much less versatile.
    The Lansky is good but rather crude.
    The KME seems to be the best overall design and is reasonably priced.
    The Hapstone seems like it takes the KME design and expands on it considerably.
    It seems the most effective and versatile system out there and with a few tweaks like youve mentioned is overall the best system.
    Im going to upgrade to it soon.
    Thanks for the info!

I wish these manufacturers would wake up and at least offer a longer, one piece rod system to be used as the foundation for these beasts. Or base it on American diameters so it could be easily sourced without having to look for metric stock and fasteners. Great review though Nick.
