Sighting in a muzzleloading rifle

- In this video I’ll show you how I work up a load for a muzzleloading rifle, and how I sight that rifle in.
This video was originally intended to be a test of a new camera before using it to film an 18th century camping event. It was never going to be published. But some folks have asked for it, so I decided to put it up, warts and all. So, please be understanding of some technical issues.

Hey Mikey, Glad to see you finally hit the big 100K!!! Congrats my Brother!!!
This video should be very helpful to beginning flintlock and caplock muzzleloader shooters.
Enjoyed watching it, thanks.
I'm finding it interesting that two otherwise identical rifles have their own wants and needs. I've been shooting bp for just a few years now, so I still consider myself a little bit of a newbie. I have very modern sights on mine, but this will be greatly helpful when I build something a little more traditional. Nice vid, Mike.
Apparently the newer, plastic containers are designed to be safer for storage. If they were to ignite, the plastic would split along the seem and allow the powder to slowly burnout rather than explode and possibly create shrapnel. That being said, the metal containers definitely seem a lot more durable!
Why not add a set of calipers to the sight-in kit?
Sight radius in inches divided by shot distance in inches tells you your sight adjustment per inch at range, windage and elevation.
Sighting my flinter I was 8" low at 100yds, so based on the sight radius, the front sight needed to be filed a little over .040", so filed .040", ran a second calc, and was dead on after the second filing.
Thanks. I did not know this.
I'd like to know more about how to do this with the calipers. Any videos or articles you could recommend on this?
Pretty good video for a test. I heard both hits on the steel. I watched a sighting video you did a year or two ago? I have used your method twice now with great results. Your the man Mike. :)
Beautiful rifle
Thanks for the vid I had a little trouble sighting in my Kentucky flintlock
I'm definitely sighting in my next, and existing, rifles this way. Thanks Mr. Mike
Gun Digest got it right when they brought you in. This is a real plus for their readers.
Great video, beautiful rifle, slightly off sound wise but not too much to worry about. Thanks Mike.
Thanks Mike. Helpful reminders as I’ve not had to do this in a while!
Thank you sir, for the most helpful video.
I feel the same way about the "new" plastic powder containers! Well done, Mike!
My Lyman GPR from Investarms came sighted-in to point of aim at 100 yards! The .54 caliber gives 1" MOA with either 90 or 110 grains of 2F. I'm spoiled!
Thanks for all u do for our sport
Learned something new again. You had me scratchin' my head early on by showing that duct tape!
Filing is like cutting boards, I cut one twice and it was still too short.
Wonderful information and demonstration. Thank you for sharing.
I am new to flintlock shooting. This was very helpful, thank you.
Really enjoyed the tutorial and nice shooting. Yes, I heard the ding. Gorgeous rifle.
Very satisfying to watch these videos while you work-on-it Mister 🤜🏿
Thanks Mike, this video will be very helpful to me.
Thanks for posting this, it is very helpful. I've got a Hawken I need to do sight in this spring once the snow is gone.
Good to see you again, Mike! I did hear the "ding," although it was faint! Looking fwd to your next article in GOTOW!!!
Thanks for the video mike.
Great shots!
Thanks for sharing this info. I've got a new rifle to sight in that I finished recently so your video comes at a good time. Some day I'd like to see a video or short segment on how to properly prime the pan... or at least how you do it and what has worked for you best. Thanks.
Stuart
Thanks Mike. Looks great. Mic sounds a little off but not bad
Beautiful wood stock.
Thank you for posting this video!!!
Great video Mike, I’ve started using Swiss powder for the same reason. Would be interesting to see what the differences in velocity between Swiss and Goex are
Great video Mike, especially for a guy like me just starting out with flintlocks. Purchased an older Lyman Great Plains 54 cal flinter and have been looking for a good sight in video. Really enjoy all of your videos, have learned a lot from them.
Thanks for the video. Just ordered my Kentucky long rifle.
Great video as always Brother.
Back on the range!
We got the ding. :)
Realistically the muzzle report will probably mask the ding to a large degree anyway.
Also: Check to see if your camera has a manual focus or focus lock that can be set in video mode. Most modern camera's use a passive autofocus system that determines distance by splitting the image on a sensor. Unfortunately that means that they tend to lock on to regular patterns / nearest object.
That is one beautiful long rifle! I am in love! ❤❤❤❤❤❤🇬🇧
Mike, thanks for the video. Nice rifle! When you are done with the York County rifle, would you mind putting them into a playlist (if you haven't done so already) because I'd like to binge watch haha.
Tyler Fields Already done! Each one gets added to the playlist as I up-load them.
@@duelist1954 Excellent!
Even with the camera burps, still a great video, Mike! I really enjoy your channel. At the moment, I'm trying to decide on a set of sights for my Lyman GPR .54 that was left to me by a very dear friend that passed. He had put fiber sights on the rifle, but the rear one is broken and the front one is faded almost to clear. I've looked at #2 tang, creedmor, buckhorn, and the 57GPR setup. I'm also looking at TC Williams to see what they are offering. I've heard a number of opinions on a lot of these, but am still waiting on an authoritative position to push me in one direction or the other. The fiber sights that are there seem to be fine except for the fact that there is no light on them at all any more, so I think I'd be ok as a hunting rifle to have an elevation adjustable rear and a static front (essentially what is there now). The 57 is supposed to be a good sight, and the creedmor gets some pretty rave reviews (although I was taken to understand that that is a sight usually reserved for long range shooting - say 500+ yds). It's an interesting puzzle to solve. Anyway, looking forward to the next one!
Thanks Mike - excellent as usual.
Heard it and saw it. Nice shooting.
Great video Mike. My BP dealer could not get GOEX for his last order. So he got Graf & Sons. Looks like it's just rebranded Schietzen. I have not had a chance to use it yet.
You’re correct p. It is Wano’s Sheutzen powder. Not bad, but it fouls heavily
Nice rifle and good shooting
This may be a stupid question, and someone please correct me if my thought is a big no-go... but say someone took a metal can from something like acetone and cleaned it out and dried it.. would that not work for containing black powder the same as the old metal black powder cans? They are similar size, shape and construction.
Thanks for producing the awesome content! Is there any chance you could do a video on how to keep flints sharp while still on the line? I'm curious as to how troops would have kept their flints sharp while remaining on the firing line.
Lol that’s a beautiful rifle! I wish I could shoot half as well as you!
Mike first I hope you are coming along well! Secondly I hear a lot of folks say they had bp in the shed for the last 40 years and it shoots today as well as forty years ago! Now I think it will still go bang but everything almost degrades over time. So what do you think does 40 year old BP maintain the same performance characteristics as it did when it was new?
Thanks again for all the fine videos over the years! Respectfully!
Black powder is very stable. As long as it was well sealed, it will not degrade
Great and informative video. I'm glad you posted this. Subbed.
I like that flinter. Brass patchboxes just don't do it for me.
I saved all my metal cans too because of my spout :).
Yay! I grew up in then rural Bucks County.
Awesome shooting Mike , thanks for sharing. What would be the POI on a 50 yrd target with a 100 yrd zero?
j j It would depend on velocity, but around two inches high.
Standard practice is not to compress Swiss Powder, have you tried different amounts of seating force and larger grains of powder?
Liked your video thanks
BONJOUR de la France SUPER VIDÉO , très enrichissante , instructive , génial . grand merci a vous ....A bientot
Thank you so much for this video
Mike, why 3F? Traditionally, the 2F granulation is used for the long-barrel muzzle loaders.
I have on order off eBay a Boya MM1 shotgun microphone that's set up to mount on cameras or smartphone. It comes with a "dead cat" cover to reduce wind noise. Less than $30 delivered. Should be here Saturday. I'm hoping it'll improve the sound on my videos.
bibbyman2 ordinarily I use external microphones with dead cat covers, but on that day I was testing the video capabilities of a new compact camera.
Would like to see your hunt next fall with this rifle. That would be Great.
patience is a virtue!!!
Mike
Hello from the PNW I have been enjoying your videos for quite a while now and I have noticed a switch in the way you load in older videos you prime the pan with 4f and in the newer ones you prime from main charge horn, 2 or 3f.
Is this a change that you have learned with experience or does it very from gun to gun depending on how they shoot. I have been shooing cap locks for quit a few years and I am just getting into flintlocks I really am learning a lot from your videos thank you and keep up the great work
thank you for your help
Randy
Well maybe you judge this less then your best vids, but it feels like I’m there on the range with you
Thank you
The way we are going right now, flintlocks will be the only firearm allowed.
"allowed." That's cute.
Not if we hang them all first. It's time to stop being all nice and law-abiding; we have to water the tree of liberty.
Otro vídeo estupendo Mike. Saludos desde España. Por cierto, yo también me llamo Mike (Miguel)
My next step. Wish me luck
I think I would break out the Lazer bore sighter for this. Reloading is a Hassel .
My Lyman (Investarms) GPR shoots 1" MOA with 90 & 110 2F. Seems higher charges improve accuracy.
After 25 years of being in shooting sports, I still had no idea that it takes a file to sight in a rifle :)))
Now I would think its like a BB gun,.... how high or low it shoot's is the amount of powder your using if its a smooth bore.
A rifle is like a centerfire rifle.
I first find a load that has a very small group at 50 yards,.. usually 1 hole.
then at 90 yards,.......because that's all the farther I will shoot a round ball.
I increase powder till I see the group open up,......then I go back to where it was accurate and that's my load.
It's the same with a bullet And 120 yards is all the further I shoot with a bullet.
And you always shoot paper,...... it tells you what your gun is doing.
At the final range,......I clean the barrel,..... and shoot 3 different targets,....3-5 shots each.
Smooth bore all I have is a shotgun,....there's no adjusting,.....50-60 yards tops,... with lee slugs,....I'm afraid to shoot ball's.
My trusty miroku KY rifle hits dead center about 5in high at 50yds and bullseye at 100.
how often are you cleaning the rifle
Levi I cleaned after every 15 shots.
Question Mike...you said the rifle was shooting low and to the left, so you said to correct, you need to move the rear site to the right...but you tapped on it from the right side. I have a heck of a time remembering or figuring out which way to move my sites for windage.
Alan Bycroft Remember FORS for adjusting for bullet impact. Front Opposite; Rear Same.
If bullet is hitting to left of target and you want to move point of impact to the right, either move front sight to left or rear to right.
If bullet is hitting low, either lower front sight or raise rear to move point of impact up.
The black powder I've ever shot is 1858 remington I've been wanting to get into deer hunting with a muzzleloader but I'm very recoil sencetive because of several shoulder surgeries. Things like recoil data and velocity data is hard to come by could you send me in the right direction I need to keep recoil unber 13 pounds is it even possible any help you might could share I would be very grateful
Thanks for the nice video. That is pretty much the same procedure like I do it. Did xou ever test the influence of the patch lube?
I have shot lamb's tallow, vs spit vs mink oil...no difference in performance...for me anyway.
Will this process work on an Enfield too? Specifically wondering about the rear sights.
Have you compared Swiss to 777? I've never seen the Swiss available where I'm at, but like the 777 for the extra velocity.
I haven't. I don't use subs very often.
What ram rod are you using?
i find 60gr of pyrodex in my remington ml700 50 cal with .490 round ball and a 15th thousands patch lubed with yellow bore butter does me good.
Ding Ding👍
How do you get such consistent groups even with a fouled bore? I recently got a TC hawken and the first shot hits a high but centered at 50 yards but every shot after I will be lucky to hit the paper. Seems to just throw the balls all over the place yet the bore doesn't look too bad and I clean very thoroughly at the end of the day.
FokkerAce1917 Too many variables for me to answer that, but I can guarantee that this rifle has a much higher quality barrel than the TC Hawken. That said my TC Hawken shoots fine groups.
Mike, I’m confused... some people use 2f, powder and I was trained to only use 3f in my rifles... please un confuse me... when do you use which ?
I use 3Fg in rifles up to .50 caliber. In .54 and bigger I use 2Fg. The reason is because of pressure. With 3Fg, if you shoot heavy powder charges, you reach a point where additional powder yields very little increase in velocity, but there are big increases in pressure. With 2Fg you can keep adding powder, and get corresponding velocity increases, but with much lower chamber pressures.
swiss powder is good stuff, but I like goex better. goex is close enough in velocity to swiss it doesn't matter. it is dirtier than swiss but swiss after about 5 shots without swabbing the bore will develop a hard ring about 3in from where the ball seats and you will have to hammer the ball the final couple of in. goex you can shoot it all day without swabbing.goex ol eynsford is a clean powder and accurate and cheaper than swiss,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
What shooting benches are best suited for long rifles? Calendars for sale at Ft. Frederick this year?
Any solid bench will work. I'll only be at Ft Fred for one day this year.
I heard it!
Mike have you ever tried a wet patch? I use Shenandoah valley lube.
Haven't tried that. I use lamb's tallow, or spit. Have also tried mink oil and olive oils, can't say I've seen a real difference in performance.
Mike interesting video. I have an older Dixie Gun Works 45 cal long rifle was built in 70s. Having a issue i need a front sight cause its missing. But the dovetail is 1/2 inch can't find any base of that size. Do you have any suggestions. Thanks.
The best thing is to make a new sight with the correct dovetail. If you don't feel comfortable doing that. fill the old dovetail and put a new sight behind it.
@@duelist1954 ok thanks, what would you recommend on using to fill old dovetail and would you have a video?
@@duelist1954 And would you have a video on making a new sight?
@@kevinwhetzel3036 I would make a dovetail out of scrap steel, but check Brownell’s they may have a steel dovetail filler that size.
@@kevinwhetzel3036 sorry, but I do not.
can this swiss powder be compressed? i know tripple 7 can not be... can someone please give me a list of powders that CAN be compressed for larger powder loads in revolvers? specifically for a ruger old army and a pietta remington 1858?
also a list of powders that will not rust my gun if i don't clean it?
Where can one find the Swiss powder?
Graf's or Buffalo Arms
@@duelist1954 thankyou :)
I've heard a suggestion that you've been demonetized. Hope it's not true.
Skeeter Lewis I had over 100 videos demonetized last week. I requested a manual review of each. So far CZcams has reviewed 63 videos, of those 21 have been monetized again, but for 62 of them they re-affirmed the de-monetization.
@@duelist1954 Hope that's the extent of it. Good luck.
I'm going to watch it I haven't watched it yet specs killing type it out
