So many of you have asked me to create a Kulning tutorial in English. It's really 10 minutes scratch on the surface of the art of kulning, but I hope you can find inspiration and the way to more knowledge.

I was out on the back porch trying this and my husband came running out and said he thought I had hurt myself.. Sounded like "wounded animal" ((his words)) LOL..
Yeah my dog came running but seemed concerned I was hurt lol

Holy cow. My voice hasn't felt this free without warming up first in years! Thank goodness the neighbors are used to my singing and yelling...
I rather learn this than traditional singing lmao.
Edit; my cat loves this. She reacts really strongly to the sounds. Guess I won’t yell my cats name at night anymore but do this lmao
I live in Texas, where the cows outnumber the people. I would love to learn this and try calling some. LOL!

Well the cows need to be trained to it. Thats why you practice in the barn when your feeding the cows and each family had their own calls that their herds came home to. The first hulning i learned called my father n step mothers horses.
My step mom is an opera singer. These are also some of the techniques she was taught.
I can't wait to try this. Pro-tip: Try this alone in your car if you don't want to freak people out ;)
Fooling around with doing this one summer evening on a drive in the country with my husband....a mule deer doe came rushing over a hilltop, down the hill, over a fence towards us. The buck we saw before her, stood statue still not more than 50 yards away while I did my own version of kulning out the window.
Me practicing this in the back room ...

Incredible how this even shows great vocal technique and encourages relaxing the mouth and larynx and lifting the soft pallet. Makes for great vocal warm ups, come to think of it... I’m in love.
lil M3l! My choir teacher did this technique to warm up our voice before choir practice session. Men do the same but in lower pitch.

i used to take a lot of vocal lessons and sing and i am researching my ancestral history and i want to start Kulning. this is truly like an ancient language in a way... a way of communication to animals and humans.. simply beautiful i really appreciate the presentation of this and how you broke it down. ive been trying to find my "voice" and i think Kulning is where i will sit for a while. Thank you.

I learned from drunk Navajo that it's all in the ululation. The ululation makes sound actually travel further, plus the human ear picks it up easier than a flat tone. ALSO if you can find an echo, then you can whoop, and then count until the echo returns and with that information you can determine range. According to the person who told me that ancient indians used to use that technique to measure distances over miles.
O wow that is super neat! What an amazing way to gauge distances before devices were invented I would never have thought of that. Appreciate the info!

finally an english tutorial for this! thank you so much! i actually have some problems regarding to my voice while attempting to do a kulning. it's hard for me to find the right tone to fit my voice. it's been a long time since the last time i sang. and im living in a city so its hard also to find a good place to try this and the people around here dont know and not familiar to what kulning is. hahaha.

Thank you for this video, as someone with a slightly deeper voice I didn't think I'd be able to do it but it seems like it's much more about technique than natural sound. Very helpful.
We have something similar, but in my country the song is only performed by men. The song is more of a african tribal chant that farmers use to seng messages to their cow or sacred cows. Thank you for sharing this rare tradition.

When I was in primary school choir we had to learn this... it’s the most beautiful sound ever especially if there are other voices singing other notes/octaves at the same time. Really appreciate tjis vidéo 🙏
Oh wow I wish I found this earlier. I've been wanting to learn how to do this for ages and I've seen your previous video but I couldn't understand and no one translated in the comments. This is the only tutorial I've found that is in English and actually EXPLAINS how to do it instead of just showing it. Thankyou so much!

oh my lord yes! Thank you for this. I love singing but Kulning just seems so much more up my alley in terms of being a form of expression. And oh who i wish i could find a place to do this! But being in Hong Kong as crowded as it is probably won't tolerate any sort of loud calls :/ Hope to find a isolated area to practice this one day.

Thank you, Maria! Your voice is wonderful. I have been trying kulning since I first heard it listening to Gjallarhorn, and have always wanted to incorporate it into my singing. The tips you gave have been very helpful, and I have been using them to perfect my kulning technique the past couple of weeks since you posted this, and I can hear a real improvement! Thank you for keeping this tradition alive and passing on your knowledge.
Also look up "hollering". There's a large history of it in the South, and it's being kept alive by small groups. There used to be a Hollerin Festival and contest in North Carolina.
Thank you for posting! Started looking it up. Also hog calling. And I was surprised to find that cat calling, that is, "Here kitty, kitty, kitty" is the same thing! There's an upward slide on the "here."

I’ve been kulning since little girl. This was a good explanation. My nana would sing me lullaby that was almost like kulning as well. It’s also common for herding. You have a beautiful voice

Finally a video showing the techniques! And in English! I have wanted to learn kulning for a while, now and there is a wonderful field and forest opposite my house which I am going to start practising kulning in.
We do the same thing in the South. We holler at each other from far away and when we get excited we yell "eye-yee". In Arkansas, we even have a Yell-fest.

Voice flexibility..relax and let volume flow out of you..let vibrato carry your voice up the register,not pushing harder and tighter...

Kulning is easier than normal singing for me. Is a more natural sound to create in the high throat for me!

Okay, I have to say, this really struck a chord with me, no pun intended!!
The first time I found my voice was when I was in children's choir at 10, then continued singing by myself. At one point I began to test myself to see if I actually had a VOCAL RANGE -- and ended up going pretty high. Me -- Soprano.
Then I got into community college and was back with a group there.
There was so much that I learned. However, I had never heard of kulning until now!
I never realized this beautiful Swedish form of singing could make a difference for me.
This could be a good way for me to rediscover the confidence in my voice and perhaps keep working on my larynx and my vocal range!

Hej! I was born in Sweden and I lived there untill 7 years. Now I am 31 and just discovered the Kulning and I really love it. It makes me feel in Sweeden again, in those lakes. I gonna start to practice now, here in Tocopilla, a town of Chile in Southamerica. The place is so different, there we have ocean and desert, but if I close my eyes I could imagine my chillhood. my singing teacher said I had amazing nasal pull and placement, but struggle with belting and pointing my voice from the chest and stomach. I have to be honest, this video helped with my singing anxiety so much... Because I'm always tense, when it comes to strength behind chest and belly voice. Thank you so much!
