My kids are asking me to use this to call them home. They are never more than 15 feet away from me but they LOVE it when I start singing this. They come running. It’s adorable. 🤣.
I remember my grandma singing in the kitchen one time, when she saw me, she stopped. I'd only heard her sing quietly in church so I asked her to keep going. She said no, I asked why, and she ended up telling me that when she was little, a choir director told her she was tone-deaf so she never really sang in front of people again. She had a beautiful voice, but spent 70+ years hiding it because of what someone told her as a child. Your intro reminded me of that story, so thank you for the pep talk about using your voice 💚
I’ve been practicing this with my parents goats and sheep. They say that I have to stay with them because that’s the only way to get the livestock into the barn now.
We have something similar, but in my country the song is only performed by men. The song is more of a african tribal chant that farmers use to send messages to their cow or sacred cows. Thank you for sharing this rare tradition, it is absolutely beautiful 😍
You should get it on video or audio at least and share. I’d love to hear that. I find different cultures fascinating when looking into their lifestyle and history
That's amazing! By the way, I'm glad I came across your channel because I've been looking for an Africa-focused cultural channel for the longest time, you definitely gained a new subscriber
I don't have sheep- just cats. Been doing it my whole life. Learned it from my mother. We're not Swedish. But I'm a professional singer, and somehow, even though I do some of the same or similar exercises as Katie, I never made a mental connection between those calls and my music, it's just sounds I make that feel good, and communicate. I'm rethinking that now!
I'm a Dane in Canada so disconnected😢. I'm also first nations-Mohawk. I love learning the similarities between my cultures. I work with youth, going to use Kulning to get their attention 😂 I'm a natural at it! I already mimic the sounds without effort! I'm so grateful you're teaching!❤️💛🤍🖤 Sometimes indigenous teachings are kept hush hush because we're trying to preserve what's left since we're in the 7ish generation of colonization
Thank you for making this video! My mom's aunt would call her cows home from setra like this, near Dovre mountains and it was amazing. Her voice really complimented the scenic nature around us and it was so endearing hearing the cows approaching like "we're here" and "we're coming". Listening to kulning became some of my most treasured memories. I've always wanted to learn how to sing and now I'm thinking I should start with kulning because it's so much fun and can sound very beautiful.
Thank you a lot. I love to sing, but somehow my voice is supersilent and has no power. Maybe, this can help me to actually find some power for it. It must feel so releasing and freeing to do this.
Thank you so much for this tutorial I've been having a hard time really hitting my pitch but once you said imagine the sound coming from my pelvis it instantly changed my sound and now I'm on the right track thank you
Thank you for posting this! I've been wanting to take up kulning for a while, now! It's tough to practice in an urban area where you have so many neighbors.
Thank you so much for the video, this really works! Had to stop midway because I live in an apartment building and the sound gets so resonant it might scare off my neighbors... Will definitely try it once I go out in the forest
This is so beautiful! I think the main problem for many is that we have nowhere out in the complete wilderness to practice this. I do actually like using my voice and singing, but I only do it private, due to having an awful and abusive upbringing. Stuff like that really does make it's mark on children, and it can stay with them all their lives. You have to fight really hard against your own programming in order to do something wild like this, and be ok with others thinking you are nuts. :P Perhaps one day I will get to try this....
Beautiful and so spiritually releasing and connecting!! I make sounds to my animals all the time and sing to them as well~ and many of the sounds you've shown us here, I have made! So wonderful! Thank You!
I used to believe that as well. I listened to my Gran sing though, and when I matured I could hear her in my voice. So now to hear myself, I listen for my Gran. You will find your voice if you search for it.
Hi Karin! Thank you for this nice video.. I really would like to come to Northern Lands to learn the kulning. I am already learning classical singing at the Conservatory for several years, so I can sing.. but I’m so interested in discover the history of kulning by practicing it with you.. do you give sometimes lessons for groups? I would be so glad to come 🌸 Thank you for your answer, Julie (from Belgium)
If I understand your question correctly (and I'm sorry if I didn't) I'd say that she isn't using any specific words when she is doing her actual kulning. I did hear one or two words in swedish at different points in the video, but overall her kulning were just sounds without a particular word in her language.
So in Germanic languages that have rolling rs you want to almost suck in and then out. It's like you roll it in reverse.. also swedish and norwegian is just... Idk how to explain it like there's a lot of to tongue stuff going on. I'd look up tongue exercises for Swedish
I would love to give this a go but I'm from another country. Is it ok for anyone to try or is it a cultural thing that should be left alone by foreigners?
I don't know. On my farm, there is this lady neighbor that calls her cows by singing high pitched "Ahhhhhh" or something of that sort. I'm from United States. I see other foreigners (e.g. Japanese lady in Uk that loves Sweden) do kulning. I cant really say, because I am a foreigner. I believe they (Scandinavian) are understanding. I hope someone native can answer your question.
Instead of giving you a yes or no, I'll just leave this link here: czcams.com/video/44u6XwNOmBM/video.html. It's a video of Takeo Ischi, who is Japanese, but an excellent yodeler.
Culture isn't a museum piece, it's just something that means something to you. If it means something to you, who cares where you're from? We need to stop acting like culture is something that belongs to only one group, because cultures become stale and die if they aren't shared. This Norwegian doesn't care if you learn how to do this.
As I learn more about Kulning, I realize my mother was doing it to call my sister and I back to the house for supper.

So cute!
I called some horses with this. It's for herding animals.
Thank you! Now I just need to get out of the city so I don’t get thrown out of my apartment! 😆
I'm going to blast this outside for my neighbors around the lake, around 6 am 😄
My neighbours must thimnk i'm nuts but i;m loving this x

I love singing like this to call my dogs from the meadow. It feels so good. And they love it too.

Love from Bulgaria.Amaising voices and technique. It helps for thyroid gland. Relaxing and liberating. Feel joy after that singing. Thanks.
The warm-ups are really good. They remind me of a really good voice teacher I've had

Gotta learn this just in case I need to call a cow
Is she using actual words in her language when calling? I understand the practice videos are sounds, like voice lessons when singing.

Of course it´s for anyone interested, in the whole world. She made it in English just because of that reason. Otherwise it would have been in Swedish.

I have always been shamed for trying to sing even a pop song. Idk how to even do the warm ups ... someone help 😫
My voice constantly cracks when I try this 😭
We call this hollering here in Virginia- it’s how people used to keep in touch before cell phone- you hollered! Not as pretty as kulning
