I want cycling to keep up with progress more. For all the innovation I see now are marginal gains borrowed from automotive and skiing from decades ago. While it could be a driver of modernization with its relative simplicity, accessibility and flexibility.
And this is not the "futuristic" concepts by design atelier I'm talking about. But effective supply chain managment, smart connectivity with home and city infrastructure, taylored balance between bottom-up and top-down componentry designs.
(So I want cycling for the whole world what EVs did some 10...5 years ago for the most developed Europe before meeting the energy price crisis - ironically, lagging behind automotive again, but hopefully in those better yet underdeveloped ways automotive could not grasp due to its size)

NOT LIKE FORMULA 1! F1 sucks! They just did the Las Vegas F1 GP. The city went through months of prep. Roads closed for months for repaving, Weeks prior to the event additionally roads closed for barriers. Then they put up shielding so that you could not see the race unless you bought a ticket to get into the spectator zones, for a huge price. Did I say that F1 sucks. We need to keep cycling from following the F1 model and charging to see events. And keep the television rights more open than the F1 stranglehold on watching...

Cycling is European... the culture and ethos of cycling is Eurocentric ... force feeding it to other countries is not a success ... even the ISA (Ignorant States of America) barely knew or cared that LeMond was busting his arse on the roads of Europe even when he won 3 Tours... I hope the rest of the world embraces cycling and it becomes truly accepted but some cultures (those countries especially dependent on cars) may never accept cycling as either a mode of transport or a sport.

For me, the future of cycling I want is good infrastructure. I want to be able to take a nice bike to the city center without wondering how to attach it and without worrying about theft. I want to see trains with more than 3 bike spots in them. I want to see leaves cleaned off bike paths as well as the main road. I want cycling lanes to be installed where they make sense, not simply on leftover space... I think that's what truly blocking people from getting decent bikes. A 700-1000€ bike is expensive for a Sunday stroll, but use it everyday for everything and it's less than a year's worth of public transport (let's not even mention cars)

Great questions! I took up cycling again when I retired from teaching, having been fondly remembering being swept up in the Canadian 10 speed craze through high school in the 70's. Back then a friend and I would amble aimlessly around solving all the world's and our own problems. Having retired to just part time clinical massage, I had time to bike again. I joined a wonderful club with 4 levels from social cruser around town to hammer and tongs full blast. Only the 4th level was a 'drop ride'. The rest were no drop with the most encouraging sweeps provided. This was accessible, we had almost 50% women. I also began cycle commuting to my part time job. Loved it so much that I put studded snow tires on and figured out how to enjoy winter cycling. Soon I was doing all our food shopping by bike. This is what I hope everyone could have access to. Cheaper quality bikes would help. Back in 2013, having taken up cycling again, I tried gcn but it didn't speak to me because I don't race or follow tech and there were no women. I was delightfully surprised in covid to discover a gcn with topics for me and with some women's representation! Even though I'm still not into racing, I was just on the cusp of subscribing to gcn+ for all those cool adventure documentaries like Jenny Graham, Nepal, Mark Beaumont etc because it was all about epic personal best. Please, please, please keep commuter, adventure, personal challenge, tips and tricks coming. I have even enjoyed videos where there is 'racing ' when it is gravel challenges because you can race to complete rather than compete, Conor, Manon, Zoe and Alex spring to mind. Hank's zanny adventures (often with Manon or Conor) have me peeing myself laughing! I can't belive that I watch as much of the regular gcn show, but you have such cool nuggets in the cycling shorts section (research, data etc) heartfelt reflection of issues off the top (thanks for acknowledging the bike affordability issue and your part in it). I LOVE Hack/Bodge too and watch the whole show each and every week and most of the ones throughout the week. Thank you all for the great stunningly beautiful videos you do! I hope that the utilitarian side will grow in content as there are more and more of us and hopefully we will see that reflected in gcn programming. Watching your channel, I dont feel as alone!

I work with a group in Maryland, US that takes in bike donations, works on them, and gives them away at no charge. So far they've given away 7,000 bikes. Many are for the younger cyclists, but a good number are entry level road bikes. They even get donations from local Trek shope for bikes they take in trade - almost new. The joy on their faces is priceless!

Cycling is a little elitist, but there's plenty people interested in cycling on a budget while still being interested in the new tech in cycling for the pro teams. That's the main difference I think. Cycling for recreation and cycling for pros. The new trend of super expensive bikes designed for pros being available for a small portion of the weekend warriors is just that. I'd love to see more content around buying and owning a bike that you hope to own forever and updating, maintaining and changing things on it based on your current wants and needs and building it into something you love and want to ride all the time.

$1000 bike "system" using an aluminum frame with reasonable geometry and clearance for 35 mm tires as the basis. Decent cable disc brakes, 9 or 10 speed Tiagra or Sora shifting, 5 hole standardized 2x chainrings and round frame tubes. Use standard rather than proprietary parts and offer the bike set up as road with moderate section wheels and higher gears, or gravel/commuter with wider tires and a springer seat post. Use a long cage mech to accommodate any cassette choices. Eyelets standard and two bottle cage mounts.

Si and Dan, you've hit it on the nail with many of your comments here. There's more issues involved when changing the cycling calendar, think about the cities, towns or locations that over the years have depended on those race events coming to their areas at those times. Small things like restaurants, cafes and bars that make a good tourist income from those races. I'm been to quite a few races live and I see the wealth there for the businesses. Also people in Europe take their vacations around the races either it be the big 3 races or even the smaller races throughout Europe, they schedule their lives around cycling. Of course the race organisers want to make better profits and better coverage, who wouldn't. My view is that cycling events need a better way of broadcasting all the events and that comment leads to GCN and GCN+ which I feel has been fantastic for cycling awareness, either racing or everyday riding. I like to believe that I was one of the first viewers to GCN many years ago, I truly believe GCN has opened the eyes to so many cyclists and even people that don't ride bikes (I have family and friends that don't ride); they like watching the race events and GCN videos. What I'm getting at is that cycling needs more either TV or Internet broadcasting to show the world this beautiful sport/activity. BUT don't make it a money grab thing as many large corporations do, they'll scare people away. I've seen as I'm sure millions also have that cycling has hugely increased over the last many years, it's not going away! Also before I go, a massively huge thanks to GCN for being, I guess I can say, pioneers in broadcasting cycling to the world, well done! Justridethebike!

One video idea is to compare the perceived exertion of a rider using power meters, bike computers , all the bike tech , vs none at all and see what the outcomes are. Some sort of experiment on the efficacy of fitness tech as a whole . We didn’t have most of it 20-30 yrs ago, are we any better of with it ? An interesting question worth exploring.

There is not a single person who wants companies to stop innovation. They want them to stop pricing people out because most of us want to keep enjoying cycling and wish for more people to join them. Something difficult to do, if you get priced out with the old sub 1000 and sub 1500 becoming the new sub 1500 and sub 2500.
More accessibility, and lower barrier of entry; that's what I wish to see for cycling's future.

I'm not too bothered about innovation . Innovation merely for innovation's sake is silly..Discernment is required. I mean, when you have a good marriage of design and function, learn to recognise and appreciate that. Do people keep trying to develop cutlery? No. Do.the old designs still sell? Yes.

I'd like high performance mechanical shifting back. Like all the groupsets form 105 should be available in both mechanical _and_ electronic. Because think about it; mechanical is clearly better for bikepacking. No batteries to charge, and it is cheaper and often lighter too.
High performing aluminium frames should also be an option. Like the exact same geometry as the carbon frame. Maybe they should also offer steel and titanium as an option. Just so that we have wat we want.
Also rim brake should still be a thing. Maybe you could just make hydraulic rim brakes, so you caan fit them with your hydraulic groupset and keep it when you upgrade the frame and wheels...? So that things work together with everything. Everything should fit together as good as possible, (apart from mixing shimano with sram or campag; that's fine by me not working).
I have an old steel bike that has a mix of campagnolo super record and dura ace and what not, works fine. That wouldn't work today would it? I mean friction shifters work with anything, if 3 speed up to 12 or 13 speed, or even campag mixed with shimano and or sram or whatever frankenstein

There is always going to be a market for high end bikes, just as there's a market for Ferraris and Mercedes. But the whole point of the cycling industry, or at least it should be the whole point, is to get as many people riding bikes as possible. That being said, the industry has got to make entry level bikes their priority. $1,500 is a fair price to pay for a quality aluminum framed bike with a 105 group set with a decent paint job, nice saddle and decent aluminum wheels weighing less than 10kg. That bike doesn't exist right now, or at least I'm not aware of it. I realize that $1,500 is still quite a bit of money to a lot of people, but I also know that if you want something that will last for years and not weigh 20kg, you have to pay a reasonable amount of money. Reasonable being the key word.

at least here in the US, most of our life is built around automobiles, with bikes as some sort of auxiliary or optional thing. I'd like to see that reversed. To that end, may I recommend a trailer ? Mine is from Bikes at Work of Ames, Iowa. I have had it for nearly a year, and have used it roughly every two weeks, when otherwise, I would have used a car. Instead of requiring another bike for cargo, you can use your town bike, which remains your town bike for everyday use. Highly recommended! 45A1A8B7-B37F-4E21-B6C6-C82CD0D0F54B-303-000000110BC8113E

@12:56 I live in Perth.... it's car mad and crawling along in your car bumper-to-bumper is just another day... uncontrolled urban sprawl has resulted in a metropolitan area (North to South) of about 150km between the northern-most suburb to the southern-most (Perth city is buried somewhere in the middle).... we have an incomplete metropolitan PSP network (Principal Shared Path) which, to the layman, is a bike path ... the PSP is generally quite good (smooth asphalt and usually lit and isolated from major roads) but there are many gaps in the PSP so when it suddenly runs out, you're back on suburban roads and associated hazards... to cap it off, there is a bogan element who loathe bikes on roads and do all they can to scare the bejeesus out of you (despite 'keep your distance' laws) .... Australia (and especially Perth) is not very cycle-friendly and the sprawl and struggling and slow public transport means people automatically grab their keys before choosing other options - even if their trip is a couple of kilometers .... this place sure ain't Belgium, folks!!!
