  • I was given a rare opportunity which I simply couldn't resist. Testing my monster magnet on three different servers! Will the sturdy servers be much better at handling a powerful magnetic field than what I previously have tested? There were a few surprises :)

      The price of my favorite server the Awesome IBM x3650 M1 (7979) is between $80-200, The most expensive one I got is an IBM x3650 M3 with two Xeon X5680 and 96GB of RAM. That might bring in $1200 on the black gamer marked :-) Last count, i had 64 servers, including a lot of blade servers.

      @brainiac75  Před 7 lety +8

      Thanks for the suggestion. Others have made such a video, so it's not on top of my own to-do-list :) Another problem is, that the magnets are fragile and will likely shatter when letting them fly together for the crushing. The neodymium magnets are very expensive. I'm not rich enough and too glad for my magnets to just destroy them for the sake of a video :(

    • @MuzikBike

    9:44 - I think the magnet has boosted the electrodynamic forces of the fan's brushless motor causing it to overspeed. Also, the additional induced electricity in the fan's PCB has caused it to burn it's components, hence the smell of burning electronics.

Now, the DL380 G4 was and always will be (in my opinion) the best server HP ever designed. Happy to see it work, but mostly thanks to mirroring. I cringed when you were packing the magnet, but surprised the mechanical disks heads didn't react at first attempt. The mix of heavy Danish accent off camera and noisy servers forced me to think out-of-my-usual-box. I also aimed to make the video different from Morten's 30 min. well the magnets all magnetize things at different strengths, and all have different fields. What's the point of having that many servers? I'm asking because I'm not that into computers, not to be a smartass.

    • @Solusphere
      @Solusphere Před 7 lety +1

      Probably because he's running a business that requires them, or simply collects them. My guess would be that he's running a high-traffic webserver of some kind, in which case you need all the server power you can get to keep response times reasonable.

      Stainless steel is still attracted to magnetism.....

    • @RealGengarTV
      @RealGengarTV Před 7 lety

      James Armes "It is commonly stated that “stainless steel is non-magnetic”. This is not strictly true and the real situation is rather more complicated. The degree of magnetic response or magnetic permeability is derived from the microstructure of the steel. A totally non-magnetic material has a relative magnetic permeability of 1. Austenitic structures are totally non-magnetic and so a 100% austenitic stainless steel would have a permeability of 1. In practice this is not achieved. There is always a small amount of ferrite and/or martensite in the steel and so permeability values are always above 1. Typical values for standard austenitic stainless steels can be in the order of 1.05 - 1.1. See Composition effects on the magnetic permeability of austenitic stainless steels
      It is possible for the magnetic permeability of austenitic steels to be changed during processing. For example, cold work and welding are liable to increase the amount of martensite and ferrite respectively in the steel. A familiar example is in a stainless steel sink where the flat drainer has little magnetic response whereas the pressed bowl has a higher response due to the formation of martensite particularly in the corners.
      In practical terms, austenitic stainless steels are used for “non-magnetic” applications, for example magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). In these cases, it is often necessary to agree a maximum magnetic permeability between customer and supplier. It can be as low as 1.004."
      Seems you'r right... though.. i fail to see why anyone would want to have magnetically permeable wire on their teeth

    That's kinda why I use HP ProLiant servers, but with a 4 disk RAID 1 it stood the best chance, those poor servers, but their age makes them kinda useless, hell my G6 ProLiant is fairly past it's sell by date.

      Well Yes anything older then a DL380 G5 is kind of worthless. The G6 is pretty good,, That can use the XEON 55 and 56xx series. they are still fast to day. (the high end ones)

    laughing because i once had a dl380 g3 and immediately recognized the body type from the thumbnail even though its 1 gen newer! amazed 4/6 of those old U320 scsi drives held up that well to the magnet! really shows how consumer geared sata stuff (even though still sometimes found in enterprise) is a less robust command set overall and less tolerant to interference like this. I think it’s wild where the magnetic field like caused the dell’s fans to short among all
    the hdd stress! sas is the modern evolution of scsi so would be interesting to see how spinning 10k sas drives would tolerate this in a newer server.
