If you are looking to build a paramotor helmet, this is the video for you! As someone who films almost every flight, getting high quality audio reliably is super important to me. In this video, I included a lot of tips that I have found over the years of refining my helmet setup. Creating the perfect helmet takes a bit of work but the result is well worth it!
Tucker Gott yes sir
Tucker Gott I do have a GoPro to use during it so maybe 😁
Not gonna lie, this video will be SUPER helpful when I get around to rebuilding my helmet cam for mountain-biking.
I only just got my new helmet in the mail a couple days ago, along with the Sena 10R. Some pretty smooth timing with the video upload, while I’m piecing my helmet together. xP Definitely some good ideas to consider o: At the moment I’m using Sena speakers in my detachable ear covers. Definitely considering getting the muffs though. The helmet’s also got premade holes for them too which I didn’t even realize until it came in the mail. Was hidden on the helmet with little plastic covers.
Edit: Just a quick update, I later found that the premade holes are for the optional visor that can be included for the helmet. I had to drill holes for the muffs, and the results are pretty sweet. :)
The type of helmet I’m currently using is the ICARO Nerv. :) It’s been a fun ride, and can’t wait to see more of your adventures Tucker! :)
Hey.. for my audio i just tore apart some gaming headphones and mounted speakers into my earmufs.. i mounted them with TPU(flexible) 3d peinted adapters for stable audio.. they are amazing for music situations in the air..
I love how you selflessly give away all your secrets.
It's great to see a young man of your generation with the initiative, goals and intelligence that you demonstrate regularly. Too many of our younger generations have been handicapped by new technologies by letting the tech do all the thinking or using it in ways that degrade the person. You however use the tech as tools to expand yourself. You remind me of one of my sons in particular whom I'm very proud of, as I'm sure your parents must be. You're a great role model for young and old alike. Thanks again for taking us along!
Wade Page
Well said. Every time I watch this young man I am impressed by his actions and how he carries himself. He is part of the 10% that will be carrying the other 90% through the next generation. I don't even paramotor ....... yet!! I have subscribed to this channel though.
7:38, cat is very disappointed that Tucker's hat is not made out of cardboard.
Can u talk to cat's 😺😺😺 moron

Tucker video is a great resource for older GoPros. BUT for everyone coming to watch years after this video, the Go Pro Hero 12 Black now has FINALLY some built-in Bluetooth functionality that allows you to use any BT microphone. I know that some family members are using Sena's BT mesh microphones with their GoPro 12 and it works flawlessly.
I was watching some other para glider vloggers and thought to myself:
“I wish they’d talk to Tucker Gott about their audio.” !!!
Sometimes I think Google’s watching me.
I LOVE YOUR CHANNEL! Ur such an inspiration ...You taught me all so much and even got me to start my own CZcams channel!
Hows your CZcams channel going?
I want you to know Tucker. why i watch your video's. when i was your age we didn't have this stuff or it was so high priced we couldn't afford it. there was 9 kids in my family so we couldn't afford alot of things. so the only thing i ever got done was school and then work, i am at the age now that this kinda stuff has pass me by for ever. but when i watch you, i feel like i'm right there with you on that flight.you take us to place's we would never get to see for our self's, i feel so free and wild and Happy when i watch your video's.sometimes i can feel the wind on my face. i want to Thank you for taking me to so many place's that i wouldn't have got to go with out you. Live life buddy. cause its all gone over night.never let life hold you down from enjoying it cause i did and now i can't go back and change things, but i can go on every ride with you. and i feel safe and i feel free,so never stop and never stop taking us with you cause you never know what it mean's to some of us out here. God Bless you and always keep you safe.
The Ozark Duke
Spot on !! Many of us are in a very similar place. You really captured the feelings. Thank you.
Wow.. yeah buddy.. agree so much! Well said!! I’m going to go try it and suggest you go get a tryke rig if ya can’t run but it’s not over.. never too late to try!! Keep yer dreams alive!!!
Awesome video man, been looking forward to this one!!
Tucker, you have awesome skills. Thanks for sharing!
Dude! That is so awesome! I really enjoy when you make videos like that this as well. Can I ask how you learned to be so handy?! Van life build, all of the 2 stroke engine knowledge, and now helmet build.
Awesome just what I was looking for! Thank you!
Thanks for sharing this. Very resourceful! Looking forward to the audio checkout vid.
Very helpful gonna start building one soon! Can’t wait to go to training this summer down at aviatorppg! Thank you for all the inspiring video!
Finally!!! I waited SOOOO LONG for this one.. thanks!
Thank you for spending your time to create valuable content like this. This is way better than pranking someone and making fun of them. I wish you best of luck.
Idk about others but I'm always with creative people like you.
I don't want any giveaways.
By the way this is the first video I have watched of you and I'm already impressed.
Keep it up bro.
So you watch Sleiman and whats her face pranking each other?
Nice work Tucker. I'm new to your channel, but I'm a big fan of your work. Nice work on your custom helmet, that's a neat setup you have built. Top Class!!
Tucker you rock!
Lightning DOES strike twice! This is the 2nd video you've made that I've asked for :) (not that I was the ONLY one that asked!)
This will help me immensely. All that little detail is what I was looking for - thank you!
Perfect Timing for this video. My daughter and I are in the middle of building our helmets. Giro helmets. Sena 30K comms. Hero 8 video.
SWEEEET!! 👍🍻
That's one thing I've neglected in my paramotor journey. I might wear my Shoei street bike helmet for a bit. Has a nice jet fighter drop-down tinted visor for bright days. I just don't know how it will feel up there. Might be too bulky, and my peripheral vision may suffer. We'll see.
@@SmittySmithsonite my buddy tried wearing a motorcycle helmet and said he couldn't see his wing on takeoff, peripheral vision is terrible, he hated it and got an icaro. Don't waste your time trying a motorcycle helmet.
@@Nords555 - Yeah, that's about what I figured. Thanks for confirming it. 👍🍻
To those wondering about the Sena boom microphone type: I just got the Sena 10R and it came with the "pronged" version boom mic that Tucker mentions. I think it's the only version available (as of today). Good news: when I first recorded myself using my iPhone connected via Bluetooth to the Sena, the recording quality was poor, at best. I though all was lost. But then I installed the Sena app on my phone, went into the settings within the app, and turned on "HD Audio". After changing this setting and restarting the Sena, the recording audio quality is great, just like in Tucker's videos!
Does this mean you don't need to splice the boom mic or use the audio adapter? I'm guessing you can just add the 2 together?
I wrote to Tucker where I asked him how he uses Active Noise Cancellation of Sena when he connected a microphone directly to the Sena input and a GoPro input. However, I see that you have used the intelligent variant. You took advantage of the noise cancellation from Sen and recorded audio over the phone using the HD audio option. Great. If we use the Tucker configuration, we can have an audio from the GoPro camera that is not filtered and audio recorded in the phone that is filtered. That's the secret!
i did it too it worked for me👍🏼👍🏼
Thanks for sharing your set up. My audio is not quite as clear as yours but I also need my headset for aviation radios as well as vlogging. My MicroAvionics has served me well for 4 years but your audio is so super clear.
Great video. Thanks for sharing the information.
Thank you for this!!!
Awesome mate....
Great video, Spot on!
Thank you for the very informative video, gives me a lot of ideas to help customize my motorcycle helmet using something as simple as a soldering iron to create recesses for wire management
Yeah dewd nice!
Alot more goes into these helmets than people think.
I agree its quite difficult
ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL !!
Nice! I have always wondered that about your videos
Thanks for all. It is an amazing and very inspiring video.
I will try it for my radio. To communucite with ground team.
If you're able to pair a Sena 10R with one of those small bluetooth to 1/8" plug receivers you might be able to get the Sena Audio Pack + Hero 4 advantages (sidetones, recording conversations, no soldering) with a Hero 8. The setup would be bluetooth to 1/8" receiver + GoPro mic adapter + Hero 8.
I don't own a Sena 10R so I can't try it out myself.
Great video!
Heya. This looks very complicated to me.... I use Go pro 8, Go pro adaptor and Boya Condenser Mic on my Alphatec Peltor headset. Using also intercom.
Thanks for sharing your tips. This is beyond my skill set and budget. I found a 80% solution with 20% cost. I use a wired boom mic and audio to radio, and separate wired lavalier mic for recorded audio.
Great video - thanks for sharing your secrets!
Awesome Build 💪🏼🖖🏼✊🏼
After building several helmets with a relatively clean look and increased durability using 5 and 6 wire cables instead of the sena wires, they are not going to chafe and break. One thing that can allow for all audio when using the intercom or phone call on the sena is to put the lapel mic into the earcup and run that connection to the gopro as described in the video. This allows for capturing sidetone ( my voice ) and and speaker audio ( other people ) into the gopro audio. The results are similar to the sena backpack. If vlogging, you can either use a phone connection to trigger sidetone in the sena or install a 3 position switch where the mic from the boom is in one position ( down ) and the lapel mic in the another position ( up ), the third position turns off mic input (middle).
why is everyone using this old SENA 10R? Can you explain that to me? Thought about buying a Sena 50 for paramotoring
"Magical blue tooth technology"
TUCKER GOTT IS A LEGEND!!!
Nice setup that matey, and you definitely have amazing audio. I just find the plug and play aspect to using my Microavionics PM100. Everything is high end and gives amazing audio out the box.
You got a link for that?
Kitty goes straight for the hat! 😂🤣😂
Great stuff, Tucker! Thanks for all that info! 👍🍻
whooowww.. this man is my idol on youtube... 😍😍
I was 270 LBS in September, now down to 230. I'm going to learn to paramotor when I hit 215 (gonna keep the muscle). I live in Las Vegas, shouldn't have much trouble finding somewhere to fly. I enjoy your videos, but I can't live that part of my life through you, I need to do it myself LMAO. Thanks for doing all the videos, you're very educational to watch!
I’m 265 and learned to fly last week. What is holding you back?
@@signaturecoatings5934 at this point, money.
Great video! How about one on your filmmaking skills. I really enjoy the quality of your videos. Your photography, editing and storytelling skills are topnotch!
Totally!
It's a good idea It's useful to many people who want to record video. It's amazing. Thank. You.
Genius!
Has a fully built helmet I already made from watching your videos but still watches entire video because it’s tucker!
If your gopro has an input connector for mic, you can buy little bluetooth reciver and conect it to gopro.. then you can connect from sena to bluettoth receiver/trasmitter via universal device pairing menu in Sena.. The reciever then may start behave like next intercom and gopro will hear everything you say. (filtered sound, no engine sounds) .. There is possibility, that you will need to do something with signal level (fom componnet audio to mic), but that can be managed.
You probably want to have a look at the Insta360 One R with 4K Mod. It can take Audio-In with Bluetooth directly - no mod needed and has flowstate stabilisation. It can also take Audio in via a much much smaller adapter then GoPros.
Great video Tucker. Thanks for putting this out there. I am thinking that the Sena Tufftalk is going to work as a good replacement for the Peltor since I don't need the gopro and just want the sound aspects of this setup.
Hey tucker I got the battery pack you got! Where did you get the mounts for it
You could use an external audio recorder like an old phone, 9r that old gopro4 just need to sync up your audio and video in after effects. Best of both worlds. Your audio doesn't have to go into that camera.
My setup is very similar as far as the soldering etc but it seems that there is a sequence of turning things on otherwise no audio is recorded. Every now and then I get no audio. I "think" the camera has to be on first.
Hey Tucker, you should consider using a tactical Fast Helmet. They can accept all kinds of attachments for cameras, headsets and more. Very affordable and comfortable.
If I’m not mistaken, and I know this is an old video, but instead of splicing into the mic of the Cena for the new GoPro’s, you can actually splice into the speakers in the ears in use that instead, and it would give you the ability to have conversations played through the GoPro as well as talkback.
Anybody have a link for the good version of the mic?
I just bought a pre-built paramotor helmet that had a Sena bluetooth and the first thing I did was check the mic. It was the bad one. :(
Hi Tucker,
Have you ever tried a throat mike? (I have extremely good experience with such on flight radio communications. You can almost eliminate wind and engine noise.). Is such compatible with your other equipment? (Only woman have the disadvantage, that such mics do not work quite well. Therefor such would only be an option for men.)
With kind regards, Marc
You should sell the complete helmet setup on your website 😁
I'll take one please
There's a device called "laryngophone", or the "throat microphone", which was used by pilots of the ww2, and it designed to completely negate all the motor noise, because it picks sound just from the throat vibrations. There are some modern models designed now, so the quality should be much better in comparison to the early military ones
I had to look for a while but I saw a guy say it didn't work at 40mph on his motorcycle because it picked up too much noise. Can you find anyone with an actual recorded test of these on a motorcycle or paramotor?
Damn u genius
Soldering tip: get some blu tack, stick your wires in so they’re in position where you want to solder them, then solder away 👍
My setup is very similar to yours however I’ve managed to make it record convos had over Bluetooth.
2 mics.
Mic 1 - Main audio feed is a standard lav wrapped around the Sena boom which goes straight to my camera*.
Mic 2 - Sena mic for communication. Sena Mic > Sena 10R > headphone adapter > 2 way jack splitter. One end goes to a set of headphones the other end goes to a voice recorder when I need to record a convo. Turn on side tone in the settings for both audio feeds.
For 98% of my flying I really only need the lav mic but it’s always good to have music too 😉
*I have a Sony X3000 with a mic port straight in. The only difference is GoPros need the adapter.
It’ll be interesting to see how PPG Smoke’s new system works.
Isn't this basically creating two separate systems for recording instead of a single one that goes to your camera?
MilesB MilesB indeed it is but I can choose which one I’m recording with. The lapel mic I use just for standard vlogging. I use the lav mic 98% of the time as the Sena just isn’t clean audio and I’m not always doing dual vlogs.
That's a lot of work!! But the end result is good!
That’s some shiny gear
Hey Tucker, for that anker battery, how did you make the mount, are they 3d printed, good call on the velcro (snag free)
Could you elaborate more on the "Easy Method" (stated above) of using the GP4 and backpack? Is it a similar process of mounting it to the helmet?
Wow dude your channel is awesome you can record outside even during quarantine
Tucker: you’re gonna have to splice & solder...
Me: ✌🏼
I feel you bro. I'm awful at this.
@@drewwiard5581 Im going to do some research. Check back in a month. I might be an expert on this electrical shenanigans.
@@AnthonyVella Anthony, I have no problems with soldering wires (Ret. A&P Mechanic) But if you find some pre-made cables, let us know. Also, the Gopro8 is supposed to be getting an interface soon. It should make it easier to wire together with the Sena(s).
009to090 YES! I need all the help I can get. 😅 I sure hope they do come out with a user friend version.
@@AnthonyVella to avoid compromising the integrity of helmet too much, could you start with one "Paramotor-Helmet-PPG-with-Bluetooth-Sena-communication" or is the quality of this helmet not good enough. Please let me know if you know of this helmet or anyother to start a vlog. thanks.
What did you do to the door on the side of the hero 8? Did you cut it short to be able to access the USB c port?
What mount did you use for the external battery? Thanks.
I can’t believe after having the technology since 2014 to connect a GoPro to a Sena, that a soldier and hack is the only way to get a setup to record mic audio when using Sena and a modern GoPro. I looked for new GoPro Hero4 and I can’t find any. They all seem to be refurbs with horrible customer reviews. Tucker, I think it’s time that you endorse a GoPro, Tucker Gott edition, that will connect seamlessly (and solderlessly) with Sena and other headset audio devices. I’d buy it. Heck, almost every paramotor pilot would buy it. Oh, and if you hand sign them, you can charge double. I know Michael Thompson would for a hand signed version. 😂
you can use your gp10 with your hero9 to have sidetone! it s what I do!
Tucker
Thank you very much for everything!
I tried to look for a link to the screws,
unfortunately I couldn't find it,
I'd love to get a link please😊
Hi Tucker, Loved your videos for years now, keep up the good work mate, someone else I used to enjoy watching was James Allred, what happened to him, I cannot find out any info about him, is he ok, hope you and Jaclyn stay well, regards Dave
Quick question dude, rather than soldering the mic wire in which goes to the gopro couldn't you just use a dual headphone splitter attached to the Sena audio adapter and then run a male to male wire to the Gopro adapter from there? The Sena Audio adapter will be outputting a sound signal so why not just use that feed?
Can you make a video that just goes over the basics of helmets? I'm trying to pick one out, but I don't understand the comms stuff
What about listening to music? And recording videos secondary? How would that work? Can you listen to tunes when you fly with this rig?
I'm using the "plug-in" pronged version that comes with the 20S EVO (not the one with the small wire extension, which also comes with the 20S), and I believe (subjectively, yes) that it sounds as good as the round version from earlier versions. So, I think it's possible that not all pronged versions are bad. YMMV
Yep, I got 2 "Pronged" version Mics with my Sena 30K. I will be testing them both.
Interesting! The next video I post was recorded with the pronged version and it sounds very muffled when compared to the rounded version.
@@TuckerGott I think I've seen a video where you told Jaclyn to make sure she was talking into the correct side of the mic. But if not, maybe you were speaking into the wrong side? On my pronged version I have to speak into the side opposite of the side having a nub on the base. I'm almost positive you know that though, so I'm just writing this out to maybe help out others.
I have nearly an identical setup; except the actual headphones. The only headset I could find, that has actual stereo sound input/output, AND active noise cancellation, is the Bose Triport Tactical Headset II. (www.bose.com/en_us/military/triport_tactical_headset_s2.html)
All the rest have 'mono-in' and then plays that back to both ears. Essentially you're either getting Left channel (or Right depending on how you wire it) or mixed L+R on the same channel. Probably not a big factor when you're making CZcams videos, but for the most part I'm flying around listenin' to my tunes.
Also, the TTH is really rugged (made for military tanks and heavy wheeled vehicle operator use), it has external amplification of quiet sounds (so you can hear really well when you're NOT flying), and is much smaller than similar noise cancelling headphones.
anyone know if the mic without prongs comes in the box or if you have to get it separately cause I couldn't find it in mine
Hey Tucker! Cool vid. Aren't you scared of getting lines tangled up after a collapse or something?
Very interesting question and I wonder how you could smooth it all out too prevent this? I bet Trucker would enjoy considering this idea too.
I wonder if the tangled lines wouldn't just break away the attachments?
Be interested in your thoughts about he Cardo 400+,seems to be preferred nowadays by MC riders
Hey Tucker, good timing... I've just bought the Sena 10S for my motorbike helmet, where did you manage to get the 'rounded' boom mic from? This one has the 'pronged' mic with it. I regularly need to take business calls while travelling so need the best sound possible :)
Let me get this straight... 😁 am I hearing that you want to have business calls while your on your motorbike? 😂👍🏼
Hey bro do you know what model sena has the rounder "good" microphone? i have the sena 20s evo but it has the pointy microphone trying to find the rounder mic Cheers bro
Hi tucker great video. So using a hero 7 or 8 like you are, are you not getting sidetone whilst you vlog ?
Thanks for another great video tucker. Do you know if you still need to do this with the newer GoPros (11-12)? Or will they link up with Bluetooth? Thanks 👍🏼
I do not miss doing this on my helmet back in the day. The Sena wire solder sucked. Have you thought about testing the Hero 8's media mod with a regular lavalier microphone in order to get rid of sticking that adapter in your helmet? Also the way the adapter plugs into the Hero 8 seems subpar compared to the 7.
The main reason why I had to build this helmet was because they put the port on the opposite side of the 8! 😂 Then I realized that the port is also perpendicular compared to the 7. Definitely subpar. I was initially excited about the media mod but not so much anymore. The adapter does the same function but I think it's still more streamline than the media mod.
@@TuckerGott gosh maybe one day there will be a simple plug and play camera. I guess the only interest of the media mod is seeing if 1. Audio is good enough with a lav mic to avoid solder and 2. Not having to burn a hole for my adapter. I might give it a shot if I'm feeling frisky on money. I don't think you mentioned but did you buy a 2nd hand hero 8 battery door so the plug could go through or cut your own?
Good call! I bought an aftermarket one on Amazon. The battery is pretty tight though, I think you could get away without a door at all.
Right on. Thanks
So I have a question that maybe you can or can't answer, but does the Gro Pro 7 and 8 have Bluetooth capability and if so couldn't you just connect audio via Bluetooth? Reason I ask is I have the GroPro 4 and thinking about adding the Bluetooth pack (yes I know I am seriously behind the times with GroPro, lol) but I am just getting into paramotoring and purchased a Helmet with Micro Avionics Bluetooth and radio capabilities so was thinking of upgrading the GoPro camera itself or getting the pack but didn't want to hardwire in a microphone if I don't have to. Thanks!! Excellent Videos by the way!
we need a build video
Does the audio adapter for the Gopro 8 hook to the extra battery and rout it to the gopro? Also where do you get the little mounts for the battery bank? Thanks for this much needed video!
I'm wanting to know the same thing about the mounts. Tucker !!! (or anyone else) where can we get mounts that fit this round style of battery bank ??
This is just awesome! I didn't understand anything but is awesome! I am technology dumb. lol
The SENA SMH-5 has the mic Tucker was referring to as the 'good' one. And he's right, the barb one is crap.
What's your opinion on blackhawk motors and gear? I cant seem to find anything good about them from reviews except the price.
Bose SoundSport Free wireless headphones are really good. should be able to wear them under your ear muffs.
But you won't be able to get voice.
When I get a paramotor, this is what I'm making.
I wonder if your setup would work with a Packtalk Bold ? instead of a Sena
Hi Tucker Gott.... I've a Hero GoPro 5 Black and with DreamFly MX-02 Communication Helmet Half Face Paramotor Headset GoPro Base and 3M ear cups.... how I can build as like you ...please advise, appreciate it..... (y)
Have you looked into the Team Wendy Exfil helmet that is compatible with Peltor headset systems? Might be something you want to try in the future that won't take so much customization to the helmet which could lead to structural failure.
Completely agree. I went with an Ops-core FAST Bump helmet for the exact same reason. shop.gentexcorp.com/ops-core-fast-bump-high-cut-helmet/
Comes with an NVG mount for mounting GoPro, just need to buy a 3d printed adapter.
www.shapeways.com/product/RZBAUKBWH/gopro-session-3rd-person-system?optionId=66470733&li=more-from-shop
I went with the Bose Triport Tactical Headset II instead of Peltors (very similar) to get stereo audio in/out (to listen to tunes) and the talk-through system so you can hear on the ground without removing the earcups.
How does the sena communication compare to a cell phone call?
Hello Tucker, I record the voice during the flight with the "Advanced Audio Recorder" by Pavan Kaylan app from the app store on my Sena10R and later, i cut it into my video with Magix Video X Pro (8 kHz - 48 kHz and 16 bit). Everything is a little more complex, but also a lot cheaper ;-) Do you have any tips for this? Greetings from Germany :-D
Would it make sense to use a helicopter helmet? The cost of a used one isn’t that far off a high-end Giro helmet, but much of the audio setup is already installed, and since soldering is already a part of the job, it’s probably a wash. Optically...I guess a a Heli helmet would look a bit obnoxious, but it does come with a visor. :) - thinking out loud here and may be totally off base. Either way, great stuff, Tucker! Thanks!!
