DIY Paramotor Headset build - Bluetooth & UHF Radio Integration

- In this episode of my 'One Man Workshop' series, I show you how I integrated a cheap Amazon Bluetooth motorcycle intercom into my Peltor ear defenders. I also use the opportunity to fit another intercom system, so I can use my UHF radio whilst I'm in flight too. This uses a DIY interface cable with a PTT (Push To Talk) button mounted in my ear cup for easy use.
This is not aimed to be a tutorial, but more of a video to inspire you on how you can build one for your self, with a little bit of knowledge and time.
I had a budget of £150 to design and fabricate everything I needed. I completed my build for around £110.
You can buy off the shelf audio systems designed for Paramotoring, however they are all out of my budget so I took on the challenge of making my own that should last me many, many flying seasons.
Sit back, relax and check out what I have created.
I hope you get inspire to have a go and many thanks for watching!

Great build! Nice and tidy finish.
That right ear cup look like a sea mine!
Cool!
Waiting for the ANR version, now...
Awesome work Ben!
Hey, it's you! My personal parajet connection! Hope your weather improves Ben...Now let me watch this video!...edit: Great video Ben! I recognize that other chap in the phone video, Mr. G himself. Sub number 30 signing off, looking forward to future content sir. Happy new year!
Hey Kyle! Me too! Was supposed to be flyable today, it's still grey and miserable here though! I hope you enjoy 🤗
Thanks Kyle for the Sub, I really appreciate it! Happy New year to you too!
Nice work. Best DIY headset I have seen.
Thanks Darrel! That's a really nice comment! It was a little more work than I originally thought but I'm really happy on the way it works! 🍻
I've made a similar headset this weekend but with a cloth aviator cap as I'm an ultralight pilot. The cap was modelled around a medical anatomy bust! All the wiring is on the headset and the cap is just to stop the Peltor X5 ear defenders blowing off my head.
I'm using using a Cardo Spirit HD BT headset and I found wiring the mic boom at the front of the ear defender across my face to be best.
FN amazing! I was looking into building one for my ultra-light. Looked everywhere for the type of connector (mini xlr) to be able to remove the cable on my full face helmet for when I ride a snowmobile or a motorcycle. The quality of your video, editing, information etc is just speechless. Thanks for sharing! 1000’s of likes 👍🏻✌🏻
Thank you for your kind comments! It did take a little while to edit! Yes the mini XLR is a great connector to use!
Bloody fantastic!
Great job. So clean and nice
Very impressive! Thanks
Wow Ben, a very professional headset hack! Also considering that’s your first CZcams video, you did a great job, it’s all very clear and well edited! I enjoyed watching. Thanks for the mention. I have Subscribed. Happy New Year 👍
Thanks Andy! That's great to hear, it was a bit nervous on releasing a video onto CZcams to be honest! Happy New year to you too! I hope you have a great 2020!
Well done mate!!! impressive
Neat build, definitely a step further than I went with mine, kudos to your sir.
Nice to see you flying! Last time we caught up at Parafest if you remember, you were just about ready to fly! I was on the Parajet stand!
@@clippedwing-bensmith1614 Thanks man, I remember it well! Unfortunately I never got the old Solo off the ground regardless i'm loving flying and hoping to be at a good few fly in this year, might see you round.
Awesome mate. Top job 👌🏼
Thanks Dave!
Love it dude.
Blaise Brogan I total agree blaise. Nice chap.
Thanks! Works a treat!
Wow.. good video and explanation...
17:26 Use a lavalier microphone between your ear and headset
Great video, Excellent first edit too. Must get one of those laser cutters, must come in handy !
Thanks John! Yes they really do! I'll do a video some day soon on the upgrades I did on it to make it worth while!
Nice vid mate! And congrats on started your YT journey.
Thanks Tatum! Only taken a few years!
ClippedWing - Ben Smith well starting is the important thing. I’ll be following suit this year (non-paramotor)...
Great job and nice vid, looking forward to seeing you flying - subbed 👍
Thanks very much for subscribing! I'm looking forward to some better weather!
How much would u charge me one to build one for me
New sub!
Thank You Steve!
First, Anthony, beat you. Great video Ben. I hope the second unit helps the development. I recognise those videos..haha.
Thanks Giles! Yes I very much appreciate you sending that! It will definitely come in handy!
I seent you Giles!😜
@@kyleoglee Ben is a really great guy.
Good work...
Thanks very much Sam!
@@clippedwing-bensmith1614 Yes Good work. I did a video on sena integration on my "ParaTard" channel. I had had a few glasses of wine though :-)
@@sexonlegs666 ah I remember watching that! Also a great video!
Could someone please explain to me why it is necessary to use additional mics and speakers? Why can't you use one mic and one set of speakers and route them to two devices (Radio and BT-Module)? Are their resistance/impedace too far apart from each other? Thank you in advance!
Oh yeah sign me up; sub'd. That was a VERY cool build.
Ah thanks very much Johnny! That means a lot! Happy New year!
Great job. Very easy to follow. I built my comm helmet too. Yours is better :' )
Tha ks for your nice comments! Took me longer than I expected to build but it was my first go, and I wanted it to last for as long as the helmets in service!
Hi Dude, great video. Have you come across any with Sidetone? I understand the Sena 30,60 and 90k have it but I’m hoping to purchase something a little cheaper. Thanks - Toby
Hello Toby! Thanks for watching! Nothing for sidetone at the moment (its a nice feature to have) but im still working on it. The Sena are lovely options but we'll put of my budget still at the moment! A common theme I guess!
Nice build, but I'm curious with all that limited space for the foam, how much db are they really dampening after replacing so much foam with electronics and wiring?
Hello Mike! Thanks for watching! Not that I have any scientific data to go off, I honestly can't tell the difference. I would say that 90% of the foam went back in. The foam did not completely fill the cups to start with, it was only filled around the out side. It would be foolish of me to assume that I still have the same level of ear protection as I have drilled lots of holes in them. I am however satisfied that the level of protection is sufficient though as I have tried to block off as much as I can.
I will have a look into seeing if there is a way of testing these out as you have raised a very valid point!
I guess I could try and get a loud small buzzer of some sort and record the dB level. I would then have to put it in my ear cup and seal it and then record it from the outside.
Good food for thought! I will look into it! Thanks for a great question!
Also just thinking, I will try and log the dB level of the speakers. Its a bit of a strange one as I have designed the cups to block out as much external sound (mainly the engine noise) but then replacing it with speakers (a sound source) that is even closer to my ears!
Hi Ben, your left speaker is parallel wired to the 5V charging supply. How did you manage to not burn your speaker? Great job though!
Well spotted! I did change it as I noticed at the last moment. It now uses the other pin for audio. I have made a few changes so will update my video soon! Thanks for your nice comments!
Nice DIY!!
Does it have noise cancellation? -- Edit, Just seen in comments it does not 😁
Cheers
The get pads are kina hard to find locally. The builders can't afford them.
Hey... any chance you can share the file for the laser?
Of course, I'll get you a link as soon as I can
Hey, just a reminder.. 😁 thanks
This is awesome. Do you think it would be possible to add Active Noise Cancelling to the system?
Hello Harry, I'm sure there is a way. I have found though that I don't really need it at the moment though. It performs well bit I will be something I'll look into in the future!
@@clippedwing-bensmith1614 After I used some Noise Cancelling Headphones on an airline flight, it blew me away how much easier it was to listen to audio. Since then I've been looking for someone who makes a helmet headset that has ANC built-in, but so far no luck.
I think the ideal set-up would be to have the ANC mic inside the earcup, so it's only cancelling the sound that makes it through the passive sound insulation.
I definitely have the space! I'll look into it for sure!
@@clippedwing-bensmith1614 If you ever fancy making another set, (with ANC or just the same as yours) I'd happily pay for your expertise. That setup looks great.
