Gary, I was thinking the same way. I've saw those engines backfire before while pouring raw gas down the carb. I was cringing when he held the open can over the carb while the engine was cranking.

Andrew if it hasn't been run for 7 years the gas has probably stale and lost a lot of its flamability. One of my friends has the same one out here in New Zealand. We drive on the left out here too. Every time you drive past a gas station it wants to pull in. Its thirsty. Its a barge. You have to watch where the back end is if you park it near power pole or trash basket as they have a fair bit of length behind the axle and if you have to pull out sharply from the kerb to get around a car in front you can club various things with the back corner. LOL But it is nice inside.
Wow, a late 80s pace arrow on a Ford chassis with a 460. I'm surprised. I thought all were 454 on Chevy P30s. Seeing this gives me new hope while shopping for class A motorhomes LOL
Damn right. He said he had 3 gallons of gas and had to go 10 miles. Wow. Burn the fucking thing. It must have a 200 gallon tank that'll get you 200 miles. I think Andrew was confused, there's no way a company would put out a motorhome that got a mile and a half per gallon. Doesn't sound right. Nobody would buy it and the company would get sued.
@@jaywillow9927 are you serious did you really just put that what do you think a motor home gets a gas one at that over the road trucks get 4 to 8 mpg on diesel
Remove the gas cap. From where you disconnected the fuel line at the pressure regulator, blow compressed air back to the tank. Have someone listen for the air back at the fill. Once you know you have air making it to the tank, put the cap back on and put more air through the line and listen underneath the coach for air hissing out of a line... Very often when RV's sit, they end up with rotted fuel lines. I believe this is due to people starting them every now and then and ending up putting water into the lines where it rots them.. Fix any leaks. Drop the tank and clean it out. Replace ALL GAS FILTERS. Reinstall tank and add gas. With the line still disconnected at the regulator, aim it into a jug or bottle and pressurize the tank with air and a clean rag. Once the gas makes it up to your jug, STOP... Hook up the line to the regulator and fire that puppy up!!! Any time you are going to let an engine sit, add gas stabilizer. It won't last forever, but much longer than plain old gas.... While you are under it, check all the brake lines too!!!
In 1969 the, PACE ARROW RV debuted at the midwest RV an outdoor camping show in Fort Wayne Indiana. It took the diesel powered RV world by storm. Because it was without a doubt ahead of its time. And it stayed that way even after Fleetwood bought the company in 1974 and they kept it on the cutting edge all the way up to 1985 when they stop producing it. As a matter of fact, my parents owned one they bought brand new in 1976 and so did one of my aunt and uncles at the same time. At the Florida RV expo in Cocoa Beach Florida. My aunt Betty Jean and my uncle Joe who both worked for NASA at the time. She, was one of my mothers sister. My grandparents had nine kids. 5 sons and 4 daughters. So needless to say I had 5 uncles and 4 aunts. And these RVs stayed on the course of the preferred used RV all the way up to right about 2002.
And definitely don't neglect to check that mechanical fuel pump, if equipped, because it could be that the lever-actuated diaphragm has failed. That might allow fuel pumped from the electric pump to pour into the crankcase through the mechanical pump, which could also explain why the fuel economy was atrocious.
Andrew, I know from experience that the batteries have to be up to snuff, once coming through South Carolina, my alternator had quit, my batteries went too low, the engine backfired and set the median on fire. Quite an experience!!
The first part of this reminds me of my old neighbor ... who when confronted with any engine that would not start ... would always comment, "Bad Gas". Always good to see Levi.
he can use his borescope to check out the tank. May only need to drain and flush with new. Blow out the lines. What amazes me is how many people never turn over parked engines. Full tank and stabil.
Really nice motorhome for 500 my neighbor had one of those Pace Arrow but his sat in a garage for a really long time so he had to put an engine in it and he used a 5 gallon tank also
For a motor that sits a long time you wouldn't need to put in a new one... Must've blown the bottom end up usually these motors don't last because of the massive amount of weight theyre pulling

"Luckily I was able to stop at a safe spot." - thank you for taking risks that others wouldn't and being rewarded for your efforts!
Yeah, I thought about that too... 3 gallons wouldn't make it ten miles. But then again, it wasn't running quite right, dead battery, no in-tank pump, no return line, not all that shocked that it sucked back 3 gallons in no time flat. If she were to be going any sort of distance, I'd show her a little love, check her over a bit more thoroughly, tune-up, and as many other commenters have said, the obvious fixes like a proper fuel pump and a new fuel filter. It may not be that the pump is pooched, just may be a poor elec. connection.
That's why those things were so popular with the older crowd or the people who actually had the time and money to deal with them, they were gas hogs 10 to 11 miles to the gallon, and that was at best 8 or 9 was a better estimate!!
