      @Alex_Shishkin_1962 Před rokem

      Re: the part that deals with war in Ukraine.
      I'd say that Zeihan over-emphasizes the theory of Russia seeking some kind of 'defensible frontier'. From historical documents, Russian/Soviet expansions of the past were driven mostly by an easily recognizable 'every land grab adds value to the empire' theory of imperial governance which was pretty much universal across the world until 19th Century. And current Russian leadership is no exception: they are illiterate in the field of modern tech, and still believe more land and more people to be the only and ultimate measure of greatness.
      Also, I'd discount at least a little bit Zeihan's demographic conclusions: Russian demography does mean their population will be dwindling for the foreseeable future, but Russians becoming extinct is not in the cards any time soon.
      Other than this, yes, what he has said is valid, IMO.

    • @lucasgrey9794
      @lucasgrey9794 Před rokem +4

      @@Alex_Shishkin_1962 Nothing Zeihan says is valid. He thinks Mao did One Child Policy. Mao died years before it was developed.
      Russia doesn't want the Russian population in Donbass to be ethnically cleansed in the manner that the Serbian population of Kosovo was.

    • @Alex_Shishkin_1962
      @Alex_Shishkin_1962 Před rokem

      @@lucasgrey9794 Yawn. Pull another one. Russian population in Donbass was never in any danger of being ethnically cleansed. This sob story is, in its entirety, Russian propaganda. Most of Eastern Ukraine outside of Donbass has similar percentages of ethnic Russians living there, and nowhere under Ukrainian control has anything remotely resembling ethnic cleansing taken place. In fact, ethnic Russians are fighting in Ukrainian military now and have been, since the previous Russian land grab in 2014. And not just draftees, either: they are plentiful among volunteers, as well.
      P.S. Chinese policy of limiting the birth rate started under Mao. Yes, while he was alive it was a limit of 2 kids per family, and an encouragement to marry later in life, but he clearly was the person who got the ball rolling. So even here you don't really know what you are talking about.

The delivery of "hope" escapes pragmatism when information is skimmed over as such. Otherwise, great talk but with BRI and Pakistan etc in the region, a power vacuum is certainly to our advantage, how remains to be seen and would like to better understand.

LFP batteries don't use any nickel or copper, they are mainly lithium and iron, two of the most abundant elements on Earth. With technological advancements, LFP batteries or some other non-rare earth mineral intensive batteries could become the norm. Tesla is also developing a drive unit that does not use any rare earth minerals, though they did not provide details on this during their last investor day presentation so I am a bit more skeptical about this claim. There are a lot of other issues I have with EVs, but rare earth minerals is one that could be overcome quite easily with technological advancements.

      Very interesting comment. I've gone back and forth the Peter Z's EV argument. Do you have any links to the LFP battery data? My information was those were mostly in the Chinese market, and the performance of LFP batteries is lower, so they go in the lower-end cards.
      Also regarding this comment. "Tesla is also developing a drive unit that does not use any rare earth minerals, though they did not provide details on this during their last investor day presentation so I am a bit more skeptical about this claim."
      I'm very skeptical of the claim that the drive train can be made without rare-earth elements. I'm not aware of a permanent magnet worth putting in an EV that works without rare-earth elements.

    The cynic in me says that if a clever man set out to sell a ton of books, a great way to do it would be to assemble the facts in a way that provides a tremendously optimistic view of the future for the target audience. But, props to Peter for being one of only a few folks that put themselves out there and make anything clear. Imagine hearing anything like this from MSM.

    I like PZ and always look for his analysis but I become sceptical when he talks about some things where I do have a literal autistic level of interest.
    As a tech enthusiast and investor it seems to me that he has only a very surface level of understanding on semi conductors and the industry. I don't know if he understands what analog and digital actually means being older or slower doesn't make a chip 'almost analog' the reason Analog chips are often (not always) made on older nodes is because analog components don't scale with lithography as well as digital components do and start having issues below 90nm. There are analog components on just about all ICs and micro controllers regardless of the node.
    Also China's semi conductor industry is no where near as bad or as incompetent as he asserts. They are hitting a wall to progress further but that's because they can't access extreme ultraviolet EUV lithography machines. EUV machines took decades to work with the combined effort of multiple governments and most of the industry pouring billions into research. ASML which is a Dutch US co owned company is the only company in the world that can make them and TSMC and Intel own like 99% of the machines in existence.
    Because EUV was behind schedule for literal decades Fabs like TSMC, Samsung, Intel and global foundries created clever work around to continue to reduce feature size of components on integrated circuits. Most notably double patterning and quad patterning. TSMCs first 7nm node was achieved WITHOUT EUV but the later enhanced revisions of the node did include EUV for some layers which reduced process time costs and increased performance.
    SMIC has been able to achieve a working 7nm node in China without the use of EUV. It's more expensive and not as good as Intel's 10nm (now renamed intel7) or TSMCs N7 nodes but it's within the same ballpark. It doesn't clock as high, seems to yield worse with larger rheticals and is less power efficient. BUT it performs better overall and well enough to beat 14 and 16nm nodes as well as 12nm nodes for density and efficiency.
    SMIC is not the best and they will struggle with new nodes without EUV lithography but it's good enough to keep enterprise and research alive. It's also good enough for AI chips in the future with some AI accelerators produced on slightly older nodes like 12nm. China is behind on the design side of chips too so embargoes of Nvidia, AMD and Intel hardware that specialise in AI will slow research down but it won't stop it.
    The idea that China couldn't use TSMCs advanced fabs is just laughable. Assuming that they didn't kill all the engineers and operators they would be able to bring those facilities online pretty quickly and they could probably start making their own bootleg copies of various high end products in Taiwan as for many of these products the entire assembly is done there along with some of the design teams etc. Even if they did do a lot of damage to all that, if they can get their hands on a significant number of EUV machines they suddenly lose a huge handicap.
    On another note: devices that operate in space often use the OLDEST biggest nodes they can. The Mars rovers main CPUs are derived from a pentium 3 on about 300nm. Larger feature sizes on older chips are far more radiation resistant than modern smaller transistors. It's also easier to design in fault tolerance on older nodes as they have had more of their bugs ironed out over time. I wouldn't be surprised if most satellites most advanced silicon components were fabricated on mature nodes a few steps behind leading edge let alone bleeding edge.
    I noticed more errors but this is enough I think to demonstrate that some of his claims should be taken with a grain of salt. I'm not saying his broader analysis is wrong but simply there are clearly blindspots.

      @mikeborrelli193 that's very kind of you. I'd recommend looking up semi wiki which is a blog and wiki run by actual experts with actual experience at the top of industry. Daniel Nenni, the founder of semi wiki has done in depth analysis on China's semiconductor industry including real experimentation on their chips. It's his analysis that I mostly rely on as do top strategic planners in the US.
      I don't think Zeihan is a fraud perse but he is completely bought into the geographic determinism world view of geopolitics.
      Most 'experts' in the field of of geopolitics are wrong most of the time but it's still worth taking in and considering their analysis with an open mind. At a very zoomed out level I think Zeihan has some interesting points but I remain sceptical as he has made some glaring errors or false assumptions like those I've outlined here.
      He also said Australia doesn't have much Bauxite when in reality Australia doesn't export much Bauxite because we process most of it into alumina and export that instead. Australia is one of the biggest Bauxite producing countries in the world lol. Although in that video his overall assessment that Australia could replace China as a supplier of many rare earth's and other needed minerals is correct.

So, 1. He was wrong. 2. If you want to say he still predicted it happening, many did after Crimea, just ask Ukrainans or east Europeans, many were waiting for it to happen.

    If you think about batteries that don't move around, i.e. home batteries, it is not a good idea to use lithium batteries. A better battery tech for the home or central power storage is a zinc bromine flow battery. A growing Australian company came up with the tech - google "redflow zinc bromine flow battery". Those batteries are not explosive like lithium is. A much better option for the home and maybe better for charging stations too.
