The ending of Hiccip losing a leg from his fight with the dragon was very gutsy for a kids' film. I'm glad that they included it though, since it's very realistic.
All 3 movies have made such bold moves. It's kinda crazy for a kids movie, but I think that's the beauty of it. Kids also have to deal with disabilities, grief and separation from those they love dearly. This trilogy tells those kids that things will still be ok in the end despite all of the hardships.

Kids are a lot more intelligent, observant, and understanding than most adults give them credit for.
I never realized it until now but when Hiccup's dad says he's sorry the second time (when it looks like only Toothless survived), Toothless then reveals Hiccup under his wings to him. Toothless was shielding Hiccup until he knew for sure that Stoick was genuinely remorseful. It's a nice touch.

@@emthegem9866 honestly, it takes a bit to realize just how smart toothless is. Like how Hiccup never explains his crazy plans to him (even the one to take down the Red Queen). He just expects toothless to already understand them and lo and behold, toothless does. They truly act like one being (especially when they’re flying).
I also just realized he did the same with Astrid. Only once she apologized did he make their ride pleasant. He really has his principles.
The very clever thing they did at the end, with Hiccup losing his foot is that Toothless lost his back fin when Hiccup tried to catch him and if you look closely when Hiccup falls into the fire, Tootless tries to bite the nearest thing he can in order to catch Hiccup, which ends up being his foot and thus making Hiccup lose a limb. They both now have a handicap that was caused by the other. I found that very clever or them.

It was also Steven Spielberg that insisted on Toothless being in the room when Hiccup woke up so he could be there when Hiccup came to terms with loosing a foot.
i was wondering how it was possible to lose a limb after being engulfed in flames if the rest of his body looks totally fine. this makes much more sense!
No one seems to point this out, but when the monstrous nightmare is released, it doesn't attack. it attempts to get out. it only starts to stalk when it realizes it's trapped. i just think that it's such a cool detail.
The fact that they thought so much about the dragons in a movie for kids in that time ,this movie is why I got into speculative biology
I love that the dragons in these movies have somewhat realistic animal behavior, really shows how much care went into making these films.
As someone who’s been physically disabled my whole life, and have a very similar personality to hiccup, this movie was super important to me as a kid and still means a lot to me. So happy y’all reacted to it and liked it ❤.

i really liked Astrid the first time i saw this i still really like her now. its kinda hilarious how her problem with Hiccup really just was "im doing everything VERY well the way they are supposed to be done, how the actual hell are you beating me??", and i love that once they deal with that she really is the definition of ride or die. the immediate turn around, the sneaky pep talk after shit goes down, being all in with Hiccups plan (also i maintain my headcanon that it had to have been Astrid who sealed the deal for the rest of the kids for joining in on the plan, they all clearly respected her to hell and back for her skill)
One interesting thing about the last fight scene,Hiccup’s leg doesn’t actually get burnt off. Hiccup falls face down,and you can see Toothless dive in to catch him. Which means that Toothless had to grab Hiccup’s leg in order to save him,he literally bit his leg off. It’s an interesting dynamic,especially considering Hiccup is the reason that Toothless lost part of tail. Great reaction as always!!!

ooh I never noticed it, I always wondered how that happened since he saved him through his wings! It makes totally sense and is such a nice detail to add at the narrative, they overall did a great job with this series ❤

Just add this in, Hiccup also mentions in the second movie how he's the reason Toothless loss part of his tail, but then says Toothless returned the favor.
I had a sudden realization that all the dragons are probably there that quickly because the boats were burned and the dragons probably came back and were grateful the beast was gone so they’re probably the ones who took them home. I like to think Astrid was the one that took over with showing everyone how to bond with them because she’s not only known longest but has been shown to be smart enough to put together everything hiccup has done

How crazy is that this movie is a dragon with A DISABILITY and Hiccup creates ACCESSIBILITY for the other dragons who are and aren't like Toothless. Second movie builds onto that more which i love
TV show too, it’s an absolute joy to watch
In the discussion of the other kids coming around to the idea quickly, I think it also has to do a lot with Hiccups notoriety. To them, hiccup became this celebrity and he was able to do all of these cool amazing things. Now he’s letting everyone else in on how he became so cool so I think it doesn’t necessarily have to do with changing their view points but learning brand new things no one else knows from someone they admirer and want to be.
I honestly want them to see He's Just Not That Into You because they have such good opinions on relationships.

Astrid is an old Scandinavian name that means “divinely beautiful.”
The name comes from the Old Norse word “ "Ástríðr." “Ástríðr” is made up of two words, “áss” which means god and “fríðr” which means beautiful.
Hiccup is also apparently Scandinavian for "little one"
my favorite detail is that not only does Hiccup train the dragons but toothless trains the humans too! and he can definitely understand english! like how he waits for astrid and stoick to apologize before rewarding them. he pretty much trains them to be better people and its so cool.
This is definitely one of my feel good/comfort movies. And not just this one, the whole trilogy and it just gets prettier and better for the animation. Also the character growth is on point.
The last movie is a feel good for you? 😭😭 I've only watched it a couple times cause I sob SO hard every time.

i never see anyone talk about or notice how in the scene where toothless tries drawing, the camera pulls out and the "mess" or "squiggles" is actually his attempt at drawing Hiccup, the way Hiccup drew him
I noticed that a couple years ago, it’s a rough loopy doodle, but I definitively see a face 💖
As another person with ADHD I also see a lot of it in Hiccup and I've seen others that feel the same. I don't think there has ever been an official confirmation or denial but he absolutely has a lot of ADHD traits that are specifically called out as making him different, which most of us have experienced in life. The story even goes on to show that what makes him different is actually a strength instead of a weakness. It's no wonder we resonate with his character.
The best theory for how Hiccup losses his foot is that he snapped the bone when he fell from the saddle, so when Toothless grabs his leg with his teeth there's the bones already broken so it doesn't stop his teeth. It's a nice bookend/perale, Hiccup took Toothless's tail fine in a unsuccessful attempt to kill him only to have Toothless take Hiccup's foot in a scuffle attempt to save him.
About the hiccup taking a knife even though he wasn't planning on using it ; i think he still brought it as a way of showing he came in peace, him taking it out, dropping it and then kicking it away was a way to communicate to toothless, that he meant him no harm. Police investigators in charge of negotiations, use the same tactic sometimes with suspects that are holding hostages.
Stoicks motivation, in my opinion. SPOILERS AHEAD.
I don't think that stoick reacted the way he did simply because he was rooted in that way of life. If you think about it, his wife (Valka) was a similar way, and I think he responded like that to her because of his way of life. And if you think about it, in Stoick's eyes, that way of thinking is what literally caused Valka to be eaten. Hence when he sees Hiccup doing essentially the exact same thing Valka did on the night she was taken, it's understandable that he would react badly. Not only does Stoick see it as a betrayal towards the group (dragons) that killed his wife, I think he was also scared for Hiccup
it's not only wholesome and sincere, but it's genuinely funny and well written, making it stand the test of time. the score, the cinematography, all of it is top notch
You guys rock socks. I just wanted to share that when it comes to having a kid you don't really understand, what works for me is just leading with love. When I get frustrated that she's not acting in a way that I think is best, I have to remind myself that I just love her and I want her to feel loved and feel safe enough to share her views with me, no matter how much older she gets. So I will literally swallow my pride and sit down with her, over a cup of coffee (for me, tea for her) and tell her: I don't understand this, I don't know what your train of thought is, but I want to support you. Tell me what you need from me. These conversations normally end in tears and hugs and a lot of affirmation about how much we love each other. It's difficult, especially because I was raised in a very authoritarian household, so I have to fight those impulses that I have to say things like 'my house, my rules' or 'I'm the adult here, you listen to me', and my daughter has also had to breath and calm down so that she can share her world with me, I think it's hard for her that I don't just 'get' her, as her mom. But so far, this is what has worked for us, and we grow closer every time.
This is how my dad raised me. It’s the thing I miss the most about our relationship.

A story about a Viking boy and his dragon, leading into one crazy adventure after another.
A little thing about the music in the flying scene is that both Hiccup's and Toothless' themes conjoin into a main theme as they work together, one of the best music scores in my opinion. :) there are a couple videos about the score online.
As a 22 year old, my friend and I sat in the front row in a theatre FULL of children just to watch the third movie and I was bawling my eyes out the entire time. I love this series it’s so amazing💖
I never realized ruf and tuf called the alpha dragon "bride of Grendel", as in, the monster from the old English germanic poem "Beowulf"

There is just something so comforting about watching you two watch animated movies. I couldn't tell you how many times I've rewatched your video on Lilo & Stitch.
When I go through different cycles of not being able to sleep well and old faithful is that Lilo and stitch video playing low with my phone face down. Knocks me out
I honestly highly recommend the tv series. Riders and Defenders of Berk showcase the growing pains of Vikings and dragons living together, and they (as well as the Netflix Race to the Edge series) focus on the growth of the characters, and have some pretty fantastic antagonists. The animation isn't great, but I really enjoyed the series (though there's a lot of moments where you scratch your head and go: "shouldn't that have killed you?"). They are an excellent bridge for the 1st and second movies.
As a wheelchair user in her 30's Im glad that kids are getting to see disability in a positive light. Also it not really being addressed "A very special episode " style. It just is what it is and they adapt.
I love this series! The book and the tv show are amazing too. Some curiosities about it: in the books, Toothless is not a Night Fury (he's another type of dragon, and he looks like the small, green one who appeared on the movie; the production team just loved him in the books do much that they decided to keep it). The "nerdy part" of Fishleg (calling out the dragons strength, numbers of shoots, etc.) is a big part of the books: the author created cards for all of the dragons (and the TV series used it too). Astrid's designs is based on Helga G Pataki from Hey Arnold.
I'm really happy to see you guys covering this. Always find your opinions interesting and How To Train Your Dragon was my favourite franchise growing up (I read the books, watched the films, watched the cartoon they made that took place between the films, even played a video game based off of it to the point it became really glitchy from over use).
Man I loved the video game! But yeah it eventually got really glitchy 😭
That scene of Hiccup falling into the flames and Toothless following after made me suck in my breath in theaters. It was such an incredible shot.

1:02:02 this moment is so underrated. It’s such a simple and powerful expression of love and admiration. America Ferrera delivered that line with so much soul. It’s one of the greatest moments of the healthy and wholesome relationship that Hiccup and Astrid share.

as a person who became disabled later in life and never really "fit in" with others, I absolutely love this movie so much. learning to live with knowing that you just have to accept yourself the way you are when you feel like you aren't good enough is really hard and I love how they showed that.
The score of this movie will always get me, its just so beautiful
47:35 to answer who else has done that and about the “signs”- hiccups mother did the same as hiccup. The dad said that because he was obviously close to someone who did try to understand dragons so he might have thought he could see the signs.
Going to comment this before I forget, don't know if you're going to cover it later, but I actually think it's interesting that the people who DO take Hiccup more seriously and actually understand his way of working with the dragons are the ones who were watching it up close and personal during the training sessions.
You're right at 30:06. It's a special called 'Gift of the Night Fury' I think it's on YT and it's got a beautiful moment at the end between Hiccup and Toothless.
This film wowed me in so many ways and Toothless being the cutest/fiercest dragon ever, made him my absolute favourite dragon. Especially as he's a fully original design since his book counterpart is more similar in size and look to the Terrible Terrors.

The lines "they killed hundreds of us- and we killed thousands of them" is so strong for me. It really shows how people react in fear.
We have done this to loads of species (sharks, snakes, spiders) because they have the capacity to kill but really act in defense rather than attacking in offense like the movies suggest (think the shallows movie about the shark actively attacking the surfer over eating a whale carcus) and we have seen a big change in their evolution because of that hunting (Rattle snakes are losing their rattles making them even more elusive than they intended them to be)
Its one of the many messages this movie has that uses this line as a key point to give perspective of why hiccup is friends with a creature that has killed many of his fellow villagers
Astrid is a film-only character, that might be why she has the only ordinary name. Although in the books all of the main kids apart from Hiccup and Fishlegs are barely mentioned. The main female lead is called Camicazi she's a cat burglar from a neighbouring island and has no romantic interest.
Part of me will always be sad that we didn't get a book-faithful adaptation, but I do love this movie a lot.
13:03 A great little bit of subtle screenwriting here. Stoick gives Hiccup the ax, telling him that when he carries it, he carries all the Vikings (in his village) with him... But with the little thunk/clank off-camera, you can hear the head of the ax hit the floor because Hiccup can't hold it up, therefore symbolically he cannot carry the Viking lifestyle.
I really hope you guys do the whole trilogy! those movies are great and I really wanna see Sam's reaction to the second one!

I think I read somewhere that the studio asked a bunch of kids and parents their opinion about Hiccup losing a limb ( if it was too much or not ) and they liked it so they included it in the story
Seriously though give the TV shows (Riders of Berk and Race to the Edge) a chance if you have the means to watch it in your free time. The storylines are good and Dagur the Deranged is one of my favorite characters, he grows on you

As a matter of fact, they did use a cat in the studio to help animating Toothless' movements.
In the middle of watching the 6 seasons series of httyd again I'm loving that you guys commentated on this 🤩
What I like about this movie is that it doesn't paint Stoic as some sort of villain, Stoic had every reason to hate Dragons, in his mind they hurt his kid and killed his wife and Stoic WAS ashamed for Hiccup because he wasn't able to kill dragons and killing dragons in this society is far more important then sports, they come in, burn down the village and steal their food, granted they did so under the influence of a Queen, but no one knew this until Hiccup discovered it. It also shows that Hiccup tried too hard being somebody he is not and it also makes sense why he would be that way, it is because it was instilled into him from a very young age that dragons are evil, heck the Dragon Manual shows you how the vikings see dragons and many of them are vicious and dangerous, Hiccup learns this in the show Dragonriders, not all dragons are nice or misunderstood, there are some vicious ones out there. Hiccup was just lucky that the dragon he started trusting wasn't vicious.
But yeah, this movie was great, there are some that argue that the red death is a weak villain and to them I say, this wasn't about the villain, it was purely about Hiccups Journey into adulthood and becoming accepted by accepting who he is and walking his own path, not the path that everyone expected him to follow. The Red Death is just there for Hiccup to show how much he has grown as a character and to show that Stoic, for all his flaws, was able to see that and finally told his son that he was proud of him, not because of what he expected him to be, but because he became better then he could have ever expected.
And that isn't even mentioning how much character they gave to a roll that doesn't speak a single word the entire movie. Toothless is just the most adorable thing ever.
The TV show Race to the Edge is so great I love it! Yesss can’t wait to watch this!!! This is my favorite animated movie of all time!!! Can’t wait for my lunch break!!! 💜💜

I remember the first time i’ve saw this movie, it’s the greatest animated movie series to ever be made. Also when we got to the part with the Night Fury in the book the “Unholy offspring of lightning and death itself” part always gave my chills

I wanted to say thank you to you guys!! Um TMI maybe but I battle depression and bipolar disorder. I’ve, unfortunately, felt incredibly unstable in my emotions lately. Hearing “hey bud” in the first second of this video made me cry bc of the comfort it brought me. Bc even if it’s just for the hour of this video, I’m not gonna be so alone.

As far as I know the director made a bunch of kids watch the movie because he was worried that him losing his leg would be too much. He asked them about it but the kids liked that touch so they didn't changed it. And I'm glad they didn't ^^

I never realized until recently that after Toothless saves Hiccup in the ring and Stoick gets the location of the dragons. The first thing Stoick says is, "I should have seen the signs." I never realized until recently that Stoick was talking about Valka, his wife. She was a dragon protector before she was taken by Cloudjumper in the sequel. Hiccup was showing Valka's protection of the dragons, and Stoick never realized Hiccup was a dragon protector like his mom until Toothless protected Hiccup in the fighting ring.
Fun facts: The small green dragon here is actually toothless in the book, he's a baby. Toothless' design is another hiccup's dragon, windwalker. In the book, hiccup has two dragons, a hunt dragon (toothless) and a ride dragon (windwalker). Hiccup in the book is the best sword fighter and can talk to dragons.
I love this series so much! I hope you get to see the other ones! The growth of every caracther is so incredible and the movies are all great! Thank you guys for everything!
one of my fave animated movies of all time, and even more I absolutely ADORE the soundtrack. I did love the second sequel, it's absolutely heartbreaking.

You can even hear "Boy and dragon become one". For Test Flight Hiccup and Toothless' themes are being used one after the other as they figure out how to fly. Never at the same time. But finally when he tosses the cheat sheet away and flies not on Toothless and _with_ him, their themes are finally played in tandem

I gasped seeing the notif. I LOVE this movie and I'm so psyched to see y'all watch it, love your commentary. This is one of the few pieces of media that is great regardless if it's the book, movie, or TV show. Also the music goes so hard it makes me cry

Yes, the newer ones are made out of leather, it needs to flex and move like the other fin, but he does make it fireproof. Basically, he crushes scales that toothless sheds and makes a paste that he then paints it with (dragon skin is mostly fireproof).
I heard a really good theory of how Hiccup lost his leg and wasn't by the fire. Toothless needed to reach Hiccup to save him from the explosion, but the only thing close enough was his leg, so to save him he had to bite Hiccup's leg.
You guys should totally react to the TV show! Especially if it’s something you haven’t watched previously.
Seasons 1+2, respectively named “Dragons: Riders of Berk” and “Dragons: Defenders of Berk”, were both made by Cartoon Network. Both of those seasons were 20 episodes long.
Then Netflix bought the show out, renamed it to “Dragons: Race To The Edge”, and did another 6 seasons of it’s own, each at 13 episodes.
So all in all, the TV show has 8 seasons spanning 118 episodes (~24min each) and takes place between the first and second movies. It does a lot of world-building, introduces a lot of new dragon species and enemies, and helps develop the relationships between people and dragons, as well as being the six main characters, as well as the romance between Hiccup and Astrid.
I would love to react to you guys watching all of it, if you’re willing to dedicate the time to it!
Side Note: Netflix does a bit of a time jump between their six seasons and the two seasons done by Cartoon Network, and technically speaking, you don’t NEED to watch the Cartoon Network seasons in order to understand the Netflix ones - personally, my first time through, I didn’t know Cartoon Network had done it’s own seasons and so I just watched the Netflix seasons. However, I WILL say that there were a lot of things I found rather confusing for a long time DUE to the fact that they were plot points and/or characters set up during the Cartoon Network seasons. SO, I would recommend watching all 8 seasons if you do decide to watch the TV show at all. :)

Technically anyone who dies protecting Hiccup would have died in battle, because in their mind they’d be battling against his incompetence at everything they ask him to do (when in reality it’s just a desire to do it differently).
HTTYD is easily in my top ten movies of all time! The music is god-tier. The animation is GORGEOUS. They had legendary cinematographer Roger Deakins consult on iy and that's why the whole film looks as gorgeous as it is and the fact that all three films LOST the Oscar for best animated film is a TRAGEDY and that is not hyperbole
There's a great video that breaks down why this whole series is such positive disability representation, not just hiccup and toothless, but the whole town of burk!

The Tv series they have is great & underrated since it’s between the 1st & 2nd film. You get to meet great characters along the way & explore world building. I know the movies will always be recommended but the writing in the series is still good as the movies

I love that both of you kept calling Hiccup Toothless and vice versa.
This is the first time I noticed Gober thrusting a new tail thing for Toothless. I have no idea how much time has passed, but apparently Hiccup was out long enough for everyone to learn how to get friendly with dragons (unless taking at the big alpha, replacing it with one that doesnt threathen to eat them, was all they needed to think humans were cool now lol), society to make the necessary architectural changes to accommodate for the dragons, his fucking ankle to heal enough for him to apply shoddy prosthetic pressure to his nub, and Gober to not only stumble upon his design notes but to redesign and make a new tail thing for him lol. Boy was in a massive coma and woke up in a completely new era.
