literally this. Katniss has experienced so much trauma since she was a child, that she bears her emotions and doesn't know how to handle them. As a sort of protective gear, people who are unattached to their emotions, turn numb and only work through logic and survival. In the books you can notice this in Katniss's inner dialogue too: she thinks through logic, survival, and how others perceive things. Only as she gets to know Peeta, does she start to face these emotions that are weird and unknown to her, and even then she still suppresses them.

The mutts with the tribute eyes and fur in the finale of the first Games, the use of Jabberjays to scream like loved ones in the second and the crocodile mutts who smell like roses and call Katniss by her name. They are all designed to create fear.

in the books, when katniss was starving and in the rain, peeta saw her and purposefully dropped the bread into the flame so it would burn, knowing that his mother would beat his ass for it and tell him to throw it to the pigs, so that he could go outside and toss it to her instead, and if it weren't for that she would not have had the hope to keep going and learn how to hunt. And that's why katniss is so pissed at him at first: she feels like she owes him a favor and can't kill him, which only complicates her feelings more when she finds out he has a crush on her (the scene in the movie also gets this point accross but its more seen as a "its a coincidence that i burned this bread so i can give it to you" and not as a sacrifice on his part cos he also showed up to school the next day with severe bruising on his head from his mother beating him)

"Makes sense then why it's a YA novel." ... Fun fact about book classifications I learned while working in the industry. The designation for 'Young Adult' for books came from the main character's age, not the target demographic. Similarly to how mystery books are *about* a mystery. Romance novels are *about* a romance. Young Adult books are *about* a young adult.
It's contrary to what most think, because children's books are usually categorized by age ranges, and YA seems like the next step.

The movies don't really explore just how unfair the selection process is. The poor districts don't train, not only because they don't have the resources to do so, but because they have no time for it, they have to work to be able to eat every day. They lose more often because of this, but also because they are weaker, too, since they are malnourished. The rich districts have time, resources and trainers. They also don't live with the worry of whether or not they will be chosen, because they know there's people who professionally prepare to go and will volunteer. Not only that, but your name is added once for each year you are eligible, except it's also added more and more times if you ask for food to survive (that's why Katniss tells Prim to not ask for more food, and why Gale's name is entering 47 times when he's not even 18).

Since that tribute went crazy and cannibalized someone, they probably realized most people would be horrified by that (which is ironic given that they’re entertained by the monstrosities that go on in the arena) and decided that since it would be hard to market a cannibal they weren’t a suitable candidate for a victor.

And it's really interesting to see the mind of somebody who survives through all that. And you get a much broader idea of the Panem, its people, its traditions. As someone who read the books through so many times, I know there are things movie makers have to cut for the sake of time. But one thing I really disliked in the movies was how they showed Katniss getting her Mockingjay pin.
In the movie she just randomly happens to pick it up, but in the books she gets it from Madge, a girl who’s basically Katniss’ only other friend aside from Gale. They wrote her completely out of the movies which annoyed me since she was an important part of Katniss’ support system, and she was just a fun character.
Also they portrayed Peeta a lot less charismatic and sympathetic than he was in the books. It shows that the bread-burning scene as an intentional act to help her knowing he’d be beaten by his mom for it. Peeta is shown to always be kind to others, and especially does everything for Katniss’ sake. Also it was probably cut for ratings sake but he loses a leg in the first game

And another thing! You were both right about how many times/ways Katniss could have killed the other tributes, but in the books it's explained that Katniss has a very righteous and defiant attitude about killing - she struggles with taking life and believes it changes her identity and makes her a bad person even though she's been forced into it, she judges herself. She only kills when absolutely necessary to save someone's life, and usually she takes the most indirect way possible (e.g. the beehive). It becomes a huge part of her character arc moving forward - that she is only able to trust people who view killing as always bad, never OK.

There's a scene at the end when they were proclaimed winners and were brought up in the hovercraft things, they had ti separate them because peeta was 2 seconds away from dying to blood poisoning from the wound in his leg and katniss was going rabid trying to break the glass separating them because she didnt want them to touch him. I think the actor is perfect for his character, they just changed or added in stuff that builds up so his character doesn’t seem as useful and likeable as he’s supposed to be. Like his character is someone that everyone agrees in the books is too good for this whole thing. The main thing with Katniss she has a personality of a stick so it is Peeta who is the likeable one, and katniss is more confused because he’s so nice that she doesn’t trust it and is annoyed at how much she feels like she owes him because he always does stuff to save her life and make her look better, when she doesn’t return the favour and often makes things a bit worse for him.
Like I don’t know how they could mess up the scene with him throwing her the bread that badly? It didn’t come off how it does in the books at all and how grateful Katniss is because he really saved her life and risked himself getting beat up from his abusive mother for it.

The whole time he's leading them off away from her.

at the end of the day, they're also comprimising. katniss never wanted and doesn't want to be a symbol for the revelution. but neither can escape this. however, even if not romantic or sexual, peeta is the closest person to her, because of that shared experience, the shared trauma that's ongoing and doesn't stop. i love this series

I do feel sorry even for the Career-ers (the "professional" volunteers from districts 1 & 2) Having spent their entire childhoods being trained to murder other children, I doubt empathy or compassion was something that was taught to them. So even their sociopathy is something artificial, forced by the Capital putting the districts in that position in the first place. And even the Career-ers and their districts wouldn't participate if the Capital didn't force them.

Just to comment on the "why is Katniss so upset that he professed his romantic feelings for her on a public platform" question. There is something very (albeit unintentional in this context) manipulative about someone putting you in the position of being the "bad guy" if you don't reciprocate their feelings. Kinda like a person who proposes to you in public because they know you're less likely to say no.

A few things I wanted to add as someone who read the books more than watching the movies; katniss’ father made the bows, weapons like that were explicitly banned but he made bows and sold them on the black market as well as him and Katniss hunting and selling game. The peacekeepers from district 12 barely stayed above the poverty line and there were several that would buy game off katniss. Gale and Katniss at one point witnessed a girl and a boy running away from the capitol from their vantage point in the forest, the boy is speared through the chest from one of those hover crafts and the girl was captured. The girl was turned into an Avox (low level servant who has their tongue removed) that serves Katniss during her stay at the Capitol throwing into question how much President Snow knows about her. Katniss and Peeta both get sick off the food from the train, it’s super rich compared to what they’re used to. Katniss also spends a decent amount of time trying to figure out how to recreate the food there for her sister. Katniss genuinely thinks Peeta is just mocking her by saying he has a crush on her, her being liked by him is not something she actually believes for most of the trilogy. She sees being loved and loving in return as a sign of weakness, her mother completely shut down after her father died and so her risk assessment is based off of that. Katniss does look to be a fairly characterless-character from the movies but katniss genuinely spends a lot of the books reinforcing that showing emotion was a weakness. The capitol actually polices how tributes are allowed to kill each other, it has to be hands on enough to make good theatre but not so hands on that viewers start to realize that they’re actually watching children kill each other for sport. Finally, Peeta actually loses his leg, idk whether in the movies they just avoid confirming it directly or if they just never have him lose it but the tourniquet katniss does to keep him from bleeding out eventually kills that leg as leaving zero blood flow for an entire limb for hours will do. Also the explosion at the Career’s camp permanently damaged katniss’ hearing but it’s fixed post game by Capitol surgeons, the same ones responsible for Peeta’s new leg.
Edit: the dogs can climb, they know to stack on top of each other. Also it’s mainly the eyes on the dogs, katniss notices Rue’s eyes in one of the dogs and basically loses it.

The whole time Katniss is just doing what she can to survive and is not even thinking about romance because she's too traumatized and too focused on survival. When the movies came out they heavily started marketing on the romance aspect and the love triangle, doing the whole 'team Gale' and 'team Peeta' thing. Which is exactly what the Capitol would have done (and did). Strip away the rebellion and the critique of the government and focus on the romance. Suzanne Collins worked in showbizz and had a lot of criticism about it before writing these books, and that really shows. Especially because she pretty much predicted how the movies would be marketed by how the capitol only focused on the love story as well.

i will never stop being disappointed by the way this movie portrays peeta. they made so many changes that completely ruined his character in my opinion. they added scenes that make him look weak (like when he falls from the rope ladder?? what the heck is that!!!), removed lines that showed his actual personality (like when, in the book, he’s still joking around even when he’s basically dying because of his leg) or changed *katniss*’s lines to make her seem more tough & badass, which completely erased the “friendliness” between them (like when, in the book, they’re both worried about the fake flames on their costume and joking about ripping off each other’s cape in case it goes wrong. in the movie katniss is like “i’m not scared 😐” GIRL I READ YOUR POV I KNOW YOU WERE FREAKING OUT)
sorry it just bothers me so much because peeta is literally amazing and there is a reason why he is seen as a threat by katniss throughout most of the book (he literally got an 8!! that’s career level score!!) and he’s incredibly charismatic, something that katniss is not. that’s why they complete each other so well, and it’s important to understand that their relationship starts to develop in the first book, but the movie does. not. show. it. smh.

Okay so in defense of the tributes. This is not my writing. But it explains the nuance of the careers better than I could. Also I'm lazy.
"I definitely do not think the careers are evil or villains. They are raised on mostly capitol propaganda. They grow up believing that volunteering is the biggest honor in all of panem, that by doing so they are bringing pride and honor to their district because they are saving some random untrained child from a nearly guaranteed death. They don’t think like we do because they have been brainwashed their entire lives. They might come across like villains because they are playing a villainous character in the games. The books don’t mention the specifics of the training academies, but I bet they have all kinds of acting and presentation lessons to go along with the physical training. They all have a fully developed persona that they use from the very begging at the reaping. These kids know how to play up their characters so they can get sponsors before the games even start.
They are literally raised like pigs for slaughter. Told that it is their entire life purpose to murder other children, and (if they are lucky) live to come back home to help future kids do the same thing. For some of them you can tell the moment they realized their entire life was a lie right before they die and it is gut wrenching. Makes me sick.
They are victims just like every other tribute of the games. They have the privilege of training for the games. But the second they are put in training they sacrifice their childhoods and any shot of ever living a real life."

Btw, Primrose, Kat's sister, is 12. Also, something the books do better at explaining than the movies did is that the games are so different from year to year that they never know what they will be facing. Some Games are held in a desert environment, some are fully aquatic, some are in an urban setting. It was pure ass LUCK that the year that Katniss competed in just happened to be in a forest setting, something she was already familiar with and the fact that she knew how to make snares to hunt and how to forage--knowledge she gained from her father to keep their family fed--was her major advantage. Distriscts One and Two, the districts closest to the Capitol, have more resources and more free time for training, which is why kids from those districts compete to become Career Tributes and often volunteer for the Games. The further districts like 12 and 11 (where Rue is from) are literally starving and they work 12 and 14 hours days. They have no time to train, even if they had the resources and/or the knowledge.

Yeah, Collins actually stated that Gale was supposed to actually be Katniss' cousin, but they pushed for a love triangle angle. She originally just wanted Gale and Peeta to represent different cornerstones/ideologies on war. From an article: "Peeta and Gale appeared quickly, less as two points on a love triangle, more as two perspectives in the just-war debate. Gale, because of his experiences and temperament, tends toward violent remedies. Peeta’s natural inclination is toward diplomacy. Katniss isn’t just deciding on a partner; she’s figuring out her worldview." Anyone reading the books can see that there really isn't even a "love triangle." Considering how she wrote the ending, it was quite beautiful. The movies however played it up too much and it really wasn't even necessary.

He's never vilified for having underhanded tactics, and Katniss never views him as weak since he just has a very different skill set than she does. I know a lot of readers may have thought of him as weak or amoral (I mostly heard weak), but the writing never validated these perspectives.
They made him out to be more innocent in the movie. He had definitely had his sincere moments in the book, but there was never any doubt that all of his choices were deliberate, and he started playing the game the second he got on that train (at least from my perspective). Despite this, there's never any doubt that he's a kind and selfless guy. I just find his characterization refreshing for a protagonist, even if he is a secondary protagonist.

Haymitch was in the 50th hunger games when he was 16. It was the second quarter quell which meant the game would have a special rule; in this case the amount of tributes was doubled from 24 to 48. When he won his game, he had unintentionally exposed a weakness in the force field of the games and used it to kill the last competitor chasing him. Though it was unintentional, Snow took it as an insult to the Capitol and an act of defiance and killed Haymitch’s mother, younger brother and his girlfriend. After that, he refused to be pimped out by the Capitol and would become a mentor and watch district 12 children die. The guilt of his continued participation, on top of the horrors of his games and losing his family made him turn to alcohol. 😢

The movies are by far one of the most true to the books out there but some of the details they leave out make me wanna pull my hair out, like Peeta and Katniss's interaction before the games, how Peeta and his father are some of Katniss's main traders at home which keeps her family alive and why katniss feels indebted to Peeta and thats why she's so frustrated that it's him she has to go to the games with. Peeta loosing his leg and Katniss going deaf in one ear, Katniss and Peeta have to listen to Cato be slowly mauled all night because it was too dark to mercy kill - or even the fact that the mutts were designed in the likeness of the fallen tributes to make them extra terrifying, like the moment Katniss realises one of them has Rue's eyes is gut wrenching and horrifying and just hammers home how fcked the game makers and captiol is. Not to mention how the books just don't hold back on showing the effects of ptsd, trauma and the very real physical ramifications of war and conflicts - all the characters have very severe scaring, missing limbs etc and have to learn to live with that which is very glossed over in the movies (they only really accurately portray the mental effects more so which i mean i kind of get but i can still be bummed about it)
man i'll never not love these books and characters just so well done for a YA dystopian, really sets itself apart in a whole other league.
(edit) ALSO - Katniss is neurodivergent cause I said so - An actual autistic person (/j ofc but fr Katniss is so heavily coded neurodivergent whether intentional or not)

I think part of why Katniss views Peeta saying he has a crush on her as him making her look week is informed by what happened to her mother. She sees her mother's depression after her father's death as weekness and somewhat by extension any emotional connection as something that costs too much to indulge in. Kind of like furthering her convo with Gale. She refuses to think about having kids or what kind of life she could want or would want if her situation changed. She's cut out the possibility of romantic attachments because she doesn't view them as something practical.

I have seen this film so many times, and I've watched your reaction to it before and I've only just noticed something. When Cato has hold of Peeta and he's taking about being dead anyway Peeta is tapping on Cato's hand to tell Katniss to shoot her arrow at it!! 😯

It's actually illegal for them to train for the Hunger Games, as the Capitol doesn't want the Districts rising in rebellion. In the Richer districts, they have training facilities where kids train and later volunteer, but that's in the districts where people actually have decent living conditions.

Cato is a tragic figure. At the end he's just a scared kid who from birth was fed the propaganda of the government and only realized it just before he died

I don't know if you've seen the other two movies, but in the books, while the triangle between Katniss, Peeta, and Gale is annoying, the way it ends is quite beautiful and not typical for YA books or movies (but closer to reality). - I recommend the books, though. In them you will get descriptions like President Snow's breath/body smelling like blood and decay (from a simi-failed poisoning attempt, according to stories), among others.

Thank you for the neurodivergence disclaimer. I’m the kind of diverse where I can still mask, and especially when I was younger trying to be charismatic felt like my skeleton crawling out of my skin and putting on a new face. It’s one of those ‘you don’t always enjoy what what your good at’ things because I had to get good at it.

43:30 I wonder how much this was done strictly, because of Haymitch. Extra fire balls maybe even being direct mocking gesture to cause him more pain. He kinda only won in 50th HG, because he run far to the borders of the arena and luckily used the force field to finish his last opponent, so it would make sense for him to recommend or inspire similar tactics with other tributes. Game Makers and Snow obviously had none of it - so they introduced stuff like that for the bigger arenas to Fortnite the kids down to the final small area.

There are also more explanations in the books as to what comes to the winners (recently reread so I hope this is accurate) but they actually win provisions for their district for a year (until the next Hunger Games/victors) so even the more well off districts like District 1 and 2 ( Cato, the Knife throwing girl) wouldn't just bring honor to their district but also resources. Plus I believe for victors, they recieve a new (upscale) house in the victor's village, money, and their family is now safe from the games (the family being safe I am not 100% sure I am remembering correctly).
So in that way even more incentive to win because maybe a better life is waiting at the end? Still deeply deeply messed up. But could argue with the reality of what life is back home and the trauma they have faced in the games, that going back with honor and just being alive could be seen as baseline incentive (or just how I thinn some tributes see it. Being able to help their families and people might help with more incentive and why some districts train their children even though it's technically not allowed but that's why they are called the Careers)

The families are not save, but they get a house (at least in the poorer districts, because I believe there were only built 12 houses per district) and they get more money and the district gets more provisions. The money only indirectly helps the family because the siblings don't have to put their names into the selection for the Hunger Games more often to get tesserae, just the regular amount (one slip her eligible year). It helps their chances, even if it doesn't prevent siblings from entering the Games indefinitivly.

One thing I love about this movie/ book is that you are supposed to hate the “career” tributes but ultimately the careers are still children who have been taught that killing others should be a celebration so they too are fully victims of the situation and really they are not any less moral then say katniss
