A little historical context for those not old enough to know…. At the time that this video was released, music videos were still culturally relevant (MTV was still actually playing them on something called television), and Alanis Morrissette was the "It Girl" of the moment. This album was at the time the highest-selling debut by a female artist, ever. It has sold over 30 million copies to date, with Billboard magazine declaring it the best-selling pop record of the 1990s. Due to all of these factors, at the time this video was hardly seen as "cheap." Her face alone was more valuable than the most extravagant high-tech special-effects could ever be. At a point when music videos were so relevant that millions of dollars were spent in producing them (and MTV was still playing them), it was a downright radical act for her to release a video consisting of nothing but a close-up of her face. It only made her seem that much more cool. Young people of today: I love you; you're awesome; enjoy your youth, for us old people; but also try to learn a little history along the way, okay? (Oh, one more thing…. Two thirds of the way through this song, she refers to her best friend, "best friends with benefits." That is the origin of the term people still use today: "Friends with benefits.")

I was just a kid at the time, so my own experience with the music video is empty. I abolsutely adore it as an adult now, & even more with this context, so thanks :)
A similarly directed video with a separate context is Janelle Monae's "Cold War". A little more dramatic, a little more veiled, but her face & emotions as one of many faces of black America.

My wife died 9 weeks ago. I can imagine my wife saying these exact words to me before we were married. These lyrics remind me of things she had said in the past. I’ve listened to this song so many times the last several days. It makes me feel a bit closer to my wife, but also sad. It’s a really good song.

I miss the 90's too, I think back to it nearly everyday. The friends, the adventures, the lawlessness, and of course the music.
Pearl Jam hit me pretty hard when they came out. When Eddie Vedder started singing you could tell it was coming straight from the soul. The way he would close his eyes and look up and sideways and shake his head as he sang always grabbed me right in the heart. He is the soul of grunge, still to this day.

Listening to Alanis gives me a kind of nostalgia that I don't really get from alot of artists. Her voice just reminds me of a better time, a more innocent time, a time that we just don't get much anymore, if at all. It's bittersweet. Alanis is very ethereal that way.

I had no choice but to hear you
You stated your case time and again
    I thought about it
You treat me like I'm a princess
I'm not used to liking that
You ask how my day was
You've already won me over in spite of me
Don't be alarmed if I fall head over feet
Don't be surprised if I love you for all that you are
    I couldn't help it
    It's all your fault
Your love is thick and it swallowed me whole
You're so much braver than I gave you credit for
    That's not lip service
You've already won me over in spite of me
And don't be alarmed if I fall head over feet
And don't be surprised if I love you for all that you are
    I couldn't help it
    It's all your fault
You are the bearer of unconditional things
You held your breath and the door for me
    Thanks for your patience
You're the best listener that I've ever met
    You're my best friend
    Best friend with benefits
    What took me so long?
I've never felt this healthy before
    I've never wanted something rational
    I am aware now
    I am aware now
You've already won me over in spite of me

She had a lot of real emotions to write with and what came out is a true masterpiece that is Jagged Little Pill.

Right around the time this song came out, I was in college...and in love with a classmate. The lyrics perfectly described our situation - I've given her hints of my feelings, I treated her like a princess, always held the door for her, etc. I even got a poster of her favorite artist - you've guessed it- Alanis!
I remember being so happy everytime we were together, and felt that she was falling for me as well. So when the chorus goes "...You've already won me over in spite of me, And don't be alarmed if I fall head over feet..." I knew the song was for us.
As it turns out, the feelings were not mutual - when we finally got down to serious talking, she said she just always thought of me as her (male) best friend (without the benefits part = ). She said that by confessing my feelings, it got her confused and didn't know what to do. I guess I misinterpreted our closeness for something beyond just friendship. I was crushed. But beyond my feelings, what pained me more was knowing that our friendship was never going to be the same ever.
That night was the first time I truly cried over a girl.
Things were a little weird for us a few days after that. But days turned to weeks, and weeks turned to months. After some time has passed by, we became comfortable with each other again. We started talking regularly and I felt that our friendship has been rekindled. We've both matured and have moved on.
We are now both happily married and have our own families. Although we haven't really kept in touch with each other, the last time we talked was a very good and happy conversation.
Certain songs can remind you of a different time in your life. Head Over Feet does that to me everytime I hear it. It takes me back to the wonderful memory of that certain girl, a memory that I will cherish forever.

Alanis Morissette is a gift from God. A true reminder of what music is all about. SPEAKING SOLELY FROM THE HEART, MIND AND SOUL. Also, Alanis didn't rely on anything but her beautiful face in this video. Creating vulnerability and innocence staring right at the viewer bearing her soul with facial expressions and sometimes looking anywhere but the camera to create that nervous feeling when you encounter your crush/lover. Also little things like fixing her hair to show self consciousness.
    True genius.

    Lyrics:
I had no choice but to hear you
You stated your case time and again
    I thought about it
You treat me like I'm a princess
I'm not used to liking that
You ask how my day was
You've already won me over in spite of me
Don't be alarmed if I fall head over feet
Don't be surprised if I love you for all that you are
    I couldn't help it
    It's all your fault
Your love is thick and it swallowed me whole
You're so much braver than I gave you credit for
    That's not lip service
You've already won me over in spite of me
And don't be alarmed if I fall head over feet
And don't be surprised if I love you for all that you are
    I couldn't help it
    It's all your fault
You are the bearer of unconditional things
You held your breath and the door for me
    Thanks for your patience
You're the best listener that I've ever met
    You're my best friend
    Best friend with benefits
    What took me so long?
I've never felt this healthy before
    I've never wanted something rational
    I am aware now
    I am aware now
You've already won me over in spite of me
Don't be alarmed if I fall head over feet
And don't be surprised if I love you for all that you are
    I couldn't help it
    It's all your fault
You've already won me over in spite of me
And don't be alarmed if I fall head over feet

Something incredible I noticed for the first time today:
As many have stated, it's obviously a simple yet powerful video. I always wondered why she looks away at times and doesn't lip certain lyrics. But today I think I know why.
The song is all very loving, and very kind. I wondered why she shows pain in her eyes at times, and can't look into the camera. That's when I noticed there is one "negative" lyric in the song. The main chorus hook "you've already won me over, in spite of me"
It's negative towards herself. "In spite of me." She feels bad for taking so long to see what was there. She even states it when she says "what took me so long" at which point she looks away again for the next few lines. What makes it more jarring is that right before she kind of laughs when she says "best friend with benefits" and then you see it fade away when she says "what took me so long"
Also to note, she does not lip sync "you've already won me over, in spite of me" until the last two times it appears in the song, and even then, the first time she lips it she looks away from the camera and it seems like she's whispering it.
The final time it appears in the song she keeps her face to the camera and says it strongly. I really think this is the end of her journey through the song. She's facing the camera and finally bearing her guilt openly. Confessing her love, and apologizing that it took her so long.
That's just my take. A seemingly simple video that I've always wondered why it had such a huge impact on me. Now I feel like I have some answers. Beautiful.

I view this music video as the song playing in her head.she's trying to choke out the words but can't seem to do it. The camera is fixated on only her face except for the part where she's playing the harmonica. However, she has her back to the camera.
The hook in the chorus reminds me of someone who knows that they are horrible to someone who loves them anyway.
