LYRICS
How ‘bout getting off of these antibiotics
How ‘bout stopping eating when I'm full up
How ‘bout them transparent dangling carrots
How ‘bout that ever elusive "could have"
Thank you, India
Thank you, terror
Thank you, disillusionment
Thank you, frailty
Thank you, consequence
Thank you, thank you, silence
How ‘bout me not blaming you for everything
How ‘bout me enjoying the moment for once
How ‘bout how good it feels to finally forgive you
How ‘bout grieving it all one at a time
Thank you, India
Thank you, terror
Thank you, disillusionment
Thank you, frailty
Thank you, consequence
Thank you thank you silence
The moment I let go of it
Was the moment I got more than I could handle
The moment I jumped off of it
Was the moment I touched down
How ‘bout no longer being masochistic
How ‘bout remembering your divinity
How ‘bout unabashedly bawling your eyes out
How ‘bout not equating death with stopping
Thank you India
Thank you Providence,
Thank you disillusionment
Thank you nothingness
Thank you clarity
Thank you thank you silence... - Hudba

I am a 38 year old woman and I agree
I love this song because it reminds me of how it feels to emerge from trauma and horror, blinking in the random sunlight, uncertain of why you're even there and if you deserve it. You deserve the sunlight. You deserve the chance to become something fresh and new. Thank you Alanis, for reminding us all of that

Awesome interpretation and message 🙌

Wow. That was a beautiful sentiment and so true.
It’s the feeing of healing
When I was a kid I used to hate this video. Now I realize it's the perfect metaphor for enlightenment. You walk through life completely vulnerable and exposed, but never afraid or weak because a sense of wisdom, strength, and inner peace stays with you. Every now and then a fellow compassionate soul reaches out to you with love and affirmation, and in that moment it means more than all the supposed promised love of paradise.
Beautifully said ...
It actually is the love of paradise, reaching out through those comapassionate souls with a an encouraging reminder that you are on the right path

And she was 20-21 when she released Jagged Little Pill, right?
I was 16 when the song was released, smiled when I listen to it. I'm 40 now, and crying when I am listening to this, profound lyric she wrote. The gratitude feeling, the process of accepting grief, the detachment, and else. The song taught me a lot of things. Thank you, Alanis! 💚

To me it represents feeling exposed and vulnerable.
The first time I’ve seen this video believe it or not . My American friend used to talk about Allanis and this video all the time. He’s madly in love with her.
My Dad died in Feb. 1990 at the age of 58. My Mom just passed this August, 3 days before my Birthday. This song reminds me so much of following in Dad's footsteps. Every Christmas he invited anyone who was alone to join our family for a Christmas dinner. After he passed and Mom moved, I called it "The Lonely Hearts Dinner"....Every Christmas night Open House and played Counting Crows. This year, I am just hoping for 2024 to be better than last year. Thankfully, my friends, nephew and his wife got me through a rough December. Love to all....may we all have a better year and continue to listen to CC's incredible music, year after year. XO

I saw a documentary about her and it showed her working in the studio. She was working on the lyrics to a song and she would just let loose bawling when she'd write down something great, something meaningful to her and perhaps profound, as her lyrics sometimes are. She's an artist and she digs deep to give something good to the world. I certainly respect her.

At the time that Alanis wrote this back in 1998, she had just come out of an exile that lasted a year and half. She had went into exile to recover from the stresses of having had her first successful album, the pressures of having just finished a worldwide tour promoting it, and fans constantly asking her when the next album's coming out. Geminis don't handle stress that well. They have to have some time to cool off, which is basically what Alanis did by going to India, which she gives thanks to in the song. When her follow up did come out, songs with lyrics like this weren't expected by fans and many panned it at the time as a result. Fans expected Alanis to follow up with the same revenge lyrics that made "Jagged Little Pill" the success it became and she didn't do that. She went her own way on "Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie" and as a result, the album didn't have the huge sales success of her prior album.
Which is why we never stick our dick in crazy.
Alanis is one of the greatest songwriters of the past 50 years. She was groundbreaking, brave and fierce and her words hit different genders and races differently depending on the situation but ultimately the same. Truth is rare in songwriting, more so today than it was in the past 40 years, Alanis is that rare gifted beyond her years " Old Soul" that landed to teach us all it is ok to be real and human and just feel. Thank You Alanis.

Nudity can represent more than one thought. It can represent vulnerability and it can represent freedom from social definitions and it represent total honesty, nothing hidden no costumes, no games. I see all 3 in this video. Her vulnerability is not weakness but a non aggressive spirit and humility that comes from recognizing one's self and her role in the universe. If you watch her face and expression throughout the video, there is no fear or confusion but the look of someone who has won a spiritual battle and won awareness and is profoundly grateful

Quite a few years ago I was given free tickets to her concert. I wasn’t all that thrilled about going but dragged myself there only to discover that it would stand to be one of the best live acts id ever seen.
She could have put in half the effort and it still would have been an adequate performance to satisfy the audiences experienced expectations correspondent compensation having gotten their moneys worth;
However, she put in such an energetic and powerful oversoul effort, giving far above and beyond what anyone could ever bargain for. She left such a lasting impression on me that this “jagged little pill” record would prove to be a magnificent song writing masterpiece that assured her a well deserved permanent residency for her gifted contribution to the music & arts world stage.

Thank you Alanis for giving us this beautifully written song. For over 2 decades still sound as good as it was on release date. Thank you.
The main message of the song is.
Thank everything what happens in your life..
Weather is fear, depression, humiliation,
happiness, gratefulness and love.
Thank all of them because that's what makes you human.
It's just gathering more and more dirt over the course of your time. Is that what it supposed to be?
Consider this a like since you have 69 and don't want to mess it up. I only wish it wasn't so painful to learn compassion.
May 31,2021 101👍 it's not about just learning, you have to do it & apply it in your life. An addict of anything has to mean it with their life to stop & say thank you. Suicidal has to fight to be happy & say thank you life. You find who you want to be that is the goodness of a higher power. It took me 50yrs. to finely realize who I am. Now I can stop counting & enjoy my life. I like this song 💕 Namaste
I see a rather esoteric message, in regards to the awakening-driven thanking for a higher-level of consciousness. India (a wink to hinduism, I suppose), the void, the present moment, forgiveness, remembering one's divinity (spiritual identity), her gaze into/interaction with what one would describe to be the astral, she's naked which symbolizes that she's without a mask, that she has let go off her ego, etc... all new age/spiritual concepts.
@@PaulieTheDude no it's about not letting yourself become buried by the dirt. No matter what kind of dirt gets kicked into your face you move on and endure you're not going to sit there and give up

Looks like the song by one who's learned to take responsibility for her fears, her wounds, her traumas, her maladaptive ways of coping with all of the above . The song by someone who's finally decided to move on from and accept the past ...and take responsibility for her emotions and actions, for her life. I remember seeing this video when it came out and everyone bashed her/it for the nudity. Listening to it now, I see the hidden message. She's vulnerable and exposed and only a select few care enough to *see* her in her vulnerability and pain. She is just awesome.
I was honestly scared being naked on the bus could have given her an infection in her private parts
Thank you, besides we should celebrate our bodies, instead of hide them. That's what I loved so much about Germany when I was stationed there in the early 80's, they're so open and not judgemental, but in the states it's a sin if you show a little skin.
I don't know if it's that way in Germany now, because I haven't been back. Only a German could comment on what it's like at some of the beaches, especially around Frankfurt.
@@brianlanders5306 I am German and living in Germany and yes, it is still that way. We still have FKK (free body culture) beaches. When I was a teenager I didn't understand the meaning of this absolute gift now as a grown man the words make a whole lot more sense.
The fact that she wrote this profound sound so young is amazing. As we age many of us understand this deeper in our soul that all of life’s experiences, the good as well as the ones we call bad, can teach us gratitude if we allow it.

Exactly 💯
I've always loved her. This is the first time I realized this song is about healing from trauma and it came back into my life at the exact right time. I'm ready to move on and just be happy.
Same here. She's simply a genius. This is coming from a guy that's really fussy and listens to Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, Kinks etc.

Don't worry......You're not the only one who's listening to this masterpiece in July 2021 !!!!!

Seems even more pertinent now!
Listening and missing my teenager years. Greetings from 🇧🇷 😀
Great to know!

This song has been a saving grace to me. Diagnosed w the most rare and aggressive form of BC 🎀 at 33. I'm now 34 and my health is wildly complex, I couldn't explain what's happening if I tried...and neither can my doctors. All I can do is let go, feel, let go again and give it all up. Thank you body, I know you're trying so hard despite it all. Thank you medicine that made me feel like I was dying to live. I saw my vitals and levels drop so low that I now understand that death is just another part of life. Thank you to my spirit for breaking through while my body swells and my lungs collapse. Thank you to whatever time I have. Thank you for the pain that makes me feel joy so deeply and completely. If life is suffering then I have truly lived. Thank you, I accept.
Your thank you comment truly stirred my emotions! I pray you experience a miraculous recovery ❤
Thinking of you with much love and peace. Please, if you have not yet tried a Whole Foods, Plant Based diet, please do. It has been proven to cure some cancers. (Read "The China Study".) There is no harm in trying.
Your words, and your sharing your experiences with us, are helping us learn how to live.
Thank you. May you be blessed.
Thank you 🙏🏽 the universe is you and the universe is us.
Your comment touched my soul and I just wanted to reach out and say thank you for your strength and courage. I send you love and healing energy. 🌈🙏🩷💫
When we are young, we hear the words. When we are older, we listen to them
I would go even further. As I get older, I feel the words and music.
I cry EVERY SINGLE TIME I hear this, since it’s release it’s been my mantra and my soul connection with that magical place all rolled into one. Thanks Alanis, this beautiful song brings tears of joy, grief, sadness, love and appreciation ❤ I love India and I love AM!!
To portray nudism without sexuality is a feat in itself, but what the Video actually shows is a depth of sympathy and humanity towards all people, so well done Alanis, 'thank you' indeed
It takes guts for anyone to stand in a crowded city naked while people hold you, but I suppose it's a metaphor for human vulnerablity
True. I know people think it's barbaric and uncivil, but we have an annual festival in parts of India, dedicated to a nude Goddess called Ma Kali, as a presentation of raw nature kind of way (strategically covered with garlards of flowers and skull from the demons she killed in the mythology). There is nude sculpture in many ancient Indian temples. Somewhere through 1000 years of invasion, we have partially lost our sense of openness and free thinking. She wrote this song after a trip to India.
I doubt you would think it was not sexual if they had not blurred her vagina and covered her breasts. There is no nudity in this video so your comment is wrong.
@@crosisofborg5524 I think that was to get by the censors
@@crosisofborg5524 But obviousy you do understand that she was never really naked in this video right? She was not really nude in real life... I take this as an artful music video, which depicts vulnerability not edited vulgar soft porn. Take my opinion in context instead of trying to prove me wrong... it's my opinion, end of... it is subjective and you are also in turn entitled to your opinion. Which you have voiced, kudos to you.
She Thanked India in this Song because she found her inner Peace there. Truely Amazing. We Thank You Alanis for your Wonderful Voice and Music you shared with all of us. God Bless You.
This song is perhaps the biggest reason I started going to India and I've returned 11 times. I may be one of the least spiritual Westerners who keeps going but ultimately the place does in fact encompass extremes we find in all of life and I continue to have profound moments there, in addition to all the aggravation and darkness. But the song blew me away at the time and started a longstanding love for Alanis herself. I wasn't crazy crazy about her first album, but starting with this one, I've kept up and loved all her music. Bravo!
Her smile (1:54) is possibly one of the most beautiful I've come across in my entire life. Makes my heart melt.
This song reminds me of my sister who lost her battle to cancer last summer, and I always come back to this song to feel like I'm with her again. You were one of her favorite artists and this song means the world to me. Thank you Alanis ❤️
Beautiful words
Brad, I was so sorry to read about losing your sister. I have lost 3 brothers and two sisters to cancer. They just couldn’t put down their cigarettes. The pain gets easier as more time passes. Hang in there. She knows that your thinking about her.😊
How 'bout not equating death with stopping?
you'll see her again.
Similar! It reminds me of the content I would use to jerk off to when I was a teenager! :)
Bro you made me cry I'm sorry for you man stay strong
Thank you Alanis Morissette for all those great meaningful songs.
It is great to have this on CZcams. I prefer to listen on the 1.25 playback setting. It is groovier and catchier that way. 😉👍
She's the May Queen. Love you Alanis
i am physically disabled by a traffic accident 18 years ago since then music is my support thank :-))
I am going through my own stuff and such positive vibes really helps...Love to you
Real music
She is an Angel...I believe.....just one of many you have, my Love. Ive seen mine...they....ARE
@doons403 yo tuve suerte al menos puedo andar pero cuando va a llover lo se . pero los primeros años son los mas duros
Hang in there mate, you are capable of much more than you can imagine! I'm an office in local law enforcement, traffic division, motorcycle unit. I've seen my share of accidents and people overcoming overwhelming odds. I, myself just went through an emotional breakdown that almost took my life. My mother and the guys from my squad were the ones who helped me to overcome it. That said, you have someone by your side, that I truly believe! Hang in there.
Winter 1998. I still remember it. The end of the 90’s was so special.

Everything and more importantly, nothing.
I agree. The 90s had a great vibe
NiGHTSaturn yessssss, magical !!!!! So lucky we were at that moment

Sundiata Keita Especially with this song, it reminds me of a day I had in Montréal with my aunt and uncle. This song was all over the radio and I cherish that moment a lot. Music was so great. I’m glad I was there.
How much more vulnerable do I need to make myself to make you feel comfortable. If you're still laughing your part of the problem.
2024....back again for the wisdom and reminder to be grateful for all of it.
First I smiled.
10 years later a tear rolled down my face.
Today I bawl like a baby.
Next week, you'll get your period.
Same thing just happened to me.
To go through that progression means you’re opening up and understanding the beauty and complex pain in yourself and others, and what it means to you now and how it will continue to shape you in the future.
I agree totally and thank you for posting. I get chills, then I get heart-tugging regrets for never seeing her perform this live, then I get tears for lost time, then...
I'll bet it even hits Alanis deeper now that she's older. Totally different perspective with age.
The song "Thank U" by Alanis Morissette is about learning to be grateful for both the good and bad moments in life. In her lyrics, she expresses gratitude for difficult experiences such as taking antibiotics, enduring disillusionment, living with consequences and weakness, and being open to change. It also acknowledges the need to forgive, be vulnerable and leave negative situations behind. The song reminds us to reflect on the blessings of life, but also the difficulties, and to be grateful for both.
What a beautiful breakdown of this song. Thank you ML 124.
To me...this is a perfect song. It is selfish in the way I believe we should live. I need to live...here is how I cane to this..

@@vincegarcia2912 ! 👍
@@jeffbanning3838 You're absolutely right, it really is a perfect song. The lyrics make you think very intensely.
I believe in the 80s they pumped farm animals with preventative medicine instead of addressing their stress and poor living conditions and their man-made hellhole life. This then resulted in hormone disruption in humans, immune system issues, cancer etc and they tried reducing the chemicals and raising animal welfare (not very successfully).
I believe "antibiotics" were a metaphor for medication you didn't need to take. Ergo addressing the real trauma.
that last scream🥲
Listening in 2024😊
❤️😀😀😀
Officially the greatest album of all time
definitely the greatest female singer songwriter albums of all time. such a masterpiece.
Although "Thank U" was of course not on "Jagged little pill"

I’m 50 and this is still one of the most beautiful songs I’ve ever heard. Saw her live about 8 years, she’s amazing & I even caught her drummers drum stick!

Can't believe that 1998 was 20 years ago...it seems like yesterday..i miss these days!
The fact that this song released 1 week before i was born. That scares me, time goes too fast. I really dont like most of the music made at the moment. But music like this is gold

That's a peculiar compliment but alright :-)
I've been a fan since high school. I, too, find her attractive. Looks wise, she is at the very top of average.
I have to agree with you on that mate , she is beautiful . I'm in love with her smile @1:53

Thank U.
She is such an amazing artist ❤
Seriously, this is one of the greatest songs EVER written! It tells the story of how Alanis couldn't cope with the amount of fame she found after "Jagged Little Pill" sold mega millions. She went to India to meditate and try and make some sort of sense of her life.
Every time I hear it, it brings up so many emotions ...
Interesting!
Yes, I heard her say that in an interview; she also said the nudity depicted her in the shower, but she didn’t elaborate beyond that!
I think she is yelling at Dave, dropping her.
Sudden worldwide fame must have become a very difficult reality for her. JLP brought the world to her feet and she began to feel overwhelmed.
close. it's about Recovery from Addiction. It's describing the Process of the 12 Steps. I'm sure she went to India and was told by one of the Gurus that what she was seeking was in the 12 Steps. I always loved this song but never understood it till I worked the steps and got sober. She's saying Thank You to all of the Circumstances and Emotions that eventually drove her to "hit bottom" and get some help. I'm not trying to be a know it all it's just that I've lived it myself. There's Symbolism through this that would take HOURS to explain. in the 4th step you list ALL of your Grievances and then you go down the List with your Sponsor and "Grieve it ALL one at a time" and then you deal with it and get over it and get on with your Life after realizing we have NO control of the Past so any energy expended on it is wasted Energy. That's what she means when she says "The Monent I let go of it, was the Moment I got more Than I could handle.
The Moment I jumped off of it, was the Moment I touched down"
And TRUST ME. You CANT go thru a 4th Step without "unabashedly bawling your eyes out" 🙂❤️
20 years later this song has a much deeper meaning for me. I thank you Alanis Morissette for articulating this so eloquently! 🙌🏻❤️☕️

Beautifully said. I agree. It does more than take me back to when the album came out. I felt strangely moved watching this video again.

2024 and still here … listening to all the songs I use to hear my mom listen to in the car having no idea what they really meant
2024 and here listening to the song that I heard over and over again in my late teens / early adulthood and only just now feeling it for the first time. I had this CD and adored her angry songs back then. This one is now my favorite.
A lot of people focus on their perception that her subsequent work didn't meet the same incredible heights as JLP, but why not choose to be thankful for the incredible gift she gave with this amazing, open and honest album.
The imagery in this video of people reaching out to touch her with compassion, or to simply connect as humans during her moment of vulnerability is quite powerful. Unfortunately my experience has not been the same. People all too often view a persons vulnerability as weakness, and it brings out the worst impulses in them.
Maybe that's also part of what Alanis is trying to say though. Being mistreated by people when we are vulnerable is an inevitability in life; goodness knows we've all hurt people in our own lives in some way. It's so easy to become cynical and pessimistic as we pass through day to day existence; the struggle is to learn patience, optimism, understanding, and openness. Suffering provides an opportunity for us to be humbled, to learn more about ourselves, and grow as individuals. Thank you Terror :-)
Thanks Bran Nubian for your reflection. After an illness we just learn about goodness.
