    Personally, I'd keep the Luscombe over the Cub. Luscombes are a bit more squirrelly on the ground, but are a lot fun, not to mention quite a bit faster on the same hp. You also will command a bit more respect as a tailwheel pilot if you fly a Luscombe.

    • @trevorfurlotte

      Luscombes were too narrow for two full size men in my opinion. I like the tandem seating and open door flying better. Both are super sweet planes.

  • @captchia
    @captchia Před rokem +80

    I’d keep the Luscombe too. Of course, I already own an 8E! Don’t buy the hype that they’re more squirrelly on the ground. They are just more responsive to the rudder pedals on the ground. If you try and taxi it like a Cub, stomping on the pedals, you’ll ground loop it. They like finesse, like any grand lady does!

    • @JC-wr7mu
      @JC-wr7mu Před rokem +7

      By squirrelly, I meant essentially what you said. You have to have a bit more finesse, that said, I and countless others learned to fly tailwheels in a Luscombe. If I knew a guy only had Luscombe time, I'd let him go fly a Cub. If a guy only had Cub time, I wouldn't let him fly the Luscombe without getting some training in it.

    I loved flying the 8A. I put around 150 hours on the all metal wing version in 4 years while I was in college. I found wheel landing to be the best way control it on the ground. Many of my college friends got their first experience flying in in a small plane with me. They had a lot of fun watching me hand prop it. This was flat-out the most fun seat-of-the-pants low and slow experience I ever had in the air. Wish I could afford one now. Thanks for the memories Jimmy.

    I agree with the Luscombe over a Cub! Jimmy, you would have better starting if you pulled the prop thru when priming. I had a 65 HP Chief and a Luscombe - both hand start, and they started very well in summer and winter. I think they were Eisman mags which were made with platinum points- never had trouble with them. Slick mags are ok if you overhaul them every 400-500 hours, and they do not hand start near as well.

My first lesson was at 8,000 feet because of turbulance and a hawk passed over head just a few feet above us. I was amazed to see a bird at that altitude. In my later years of flying I was engaged with a couple birds flying at altitude at night. One made a mess of my Twin Comanche's wind screen and another on the nose of my Aztec.

    No way I would keep the Piper Cub that Luscombe is superior in every way. Plus, I think that the Piper Cub would sell for more money than the Luscombe.

    I think you are missing the boat a bit there, Jimmy. This is a beautiful aircraft, and has to be a lot more comfortable to fly than that Cub. Just need to steal the starter motor from that other plane, :)

    Maybe @Blancolorio would like another Luscombe, You think that one is squirrely on the ground, you should try my Dads Pazmany Pl-4 it is shorter than that Luscombe

    Idles at 400 easy because the compression on the 65 hp Continental is 5.56:1. You can run it on 87 octane mogas, in fact I think there is an STC to do just that, IIRC.

    I know other people have said this, but I'm going to chime in as well. If I had the choice to keep the Luscombe or keep the Cub, I'd keep the Luscombe. I learned how to fly in a Luscombe. Yes, they are not as forgiving on the ground as certain other tailwheel planes, but all that does is make you a more conscientious pilot with better finesse on the ground. The Luscombe is fast for the hp because of that slick all-metal design. My brother-in-law's 65hp Luscombe could out-cruise his friend's 90hp Cub. Luscombes are also more rare and turn more heads at the fly-ins.
