      @@TrulyTails the games in roblox are made by the players! and it’s a very capable engine. There’s a lot of developers making a living off of it, solo games can make millions of dollars. And they handle all the multiplayer networking, publishing, and all that mess for you! It’s pretty cool. It’s what I use, though I don’t do it as a job quite yet. Roblox scripts are coded in LUAU, Roblox’s version of LUA. It’s definitely a super great place for people to learn game development & coding!

Have you considered DLC in the future? If not, would you consider adding in cosmetics? Maybe titles you could buy, or mount skins or something like that? I think it would be a great way for you to monetize the game, with little effort or change to game play. Now, since last year, I decided to go together with some of my fellow students and we want to create our own studio.
    Our work is chaotic, artistic, funny but also decisive, but I enjoy working with them. However, a group project is something else than creating your own vision. It feels weird and I bet I would feel different with not having uNI in the back of my mind - but working as a team holds a completely different challenge level than working alone. What were and our your thoughts on a publisher. This project seems like it would have garnered interest

    • @MichaelKocha
      @MichaelKocha  Před rokem

      We spoke with a couple publishers. One was quite a bit smaller and they weren't interested in us until we had a successful Kickstarter. They they were suddenly interested in taking 80% of our revenue in exchange for marketing. The other was a much larger, prestigious publisher known for working with indie studios. We put a lot of effort into working for them but they dragged their feet all the way up until launch and their communication was awful. We ultimately decided to call it quits because we would have had to delay the release just to get a contract signed with them. Which left no time for marketing on their part, which was the big reason we wanted to work with them.
      We've considered going to a publisher now for some marketing, but I don't think giving up 50%+ of our revenue would be a smart idea right now considering we couldn't even afford to pay our team and our bills. We're kind of stuck in a bad spot.

    • @MichaelKocha
      @MichaelKocha  Před rokem +23

      I understand from a surface level this looks crazy but we put a lot of thought into it before we accepted. First of all, we were really just trying to bring some big attention to the game. 99% of those new players had never heard of the game and would never have bought it anyway. Every time one of those players launches the game their entire friends list sees it. Steam also pushes games that are more active and having 50k players suddenly is pretty active. We had a lot of other reasons and did our due diligence first. Overall I don't think it hurt us at all. In the end it just didn't have as much of an impact as we'd hoped.

    Burnout is a serious issue in the gamedev scene and far too common. It already starts to set in during studies and I know (me included) multiple people who are on sick leave due to burnout. Maybe studying and working 12 hours on a game for no revenue at the same time is not a good idea.
    Good thing you got through the burnout and you were able to continue the project!

    • @MichaelKocha
      @MichaelKocha  Před rokem +4

      You're not wrong! I've encountered a few cases of burnout from this project and many throughout my career as an indie dev. But this one was by far the worst. It really helps to have some skin in the game when trying to recover. If no one knows about your project and there's nothing holding you accountable to come back to it, it's really easy to just throw in the towel and move on to something new. But that's also a double edged sword. Because knowing people are counting on you can add to the stress and make burnout worse. I wish there was a magic strategy to avoid it, but I think it depends a lot on the person, the project and the responsibilities of the dev. Taking breaks seems to be the easiest answer for now.

  • @IllyasArt
    @IllyasArt Před rokem +3

    Any plans to switch to UE5? I really, really like UE5. Switching was a breeze but, my games aren't MMO's or online games so, there wasn't really that much to fix when switching. If not, I would recommend looking into changing UE4's theme. There are a few on the marketplace. Dracula (odd name, I know.) is a theme that exists for many apps. It's what I use for UE5, Scrivener, and a few other programs. It's free but, I don't know if they have a UE4 version. Pretty sure custom non hard coded themes was a thing that UE5 added...

      Yeah. I really love UE5 and would love to switch. I'm just not sure I want to deal with fixing all the issues and I'm worried about support for Windows 7 and 8. When we went to 4.26 from 25 we ran into a bunch of problems.

      @@MichaelKocha Oh yeah, the same thing happened with my games when switching from 4.25 to 4.26. Oddly, switching to 4.26 to 4.27, and then to UE5 barely had any problems. Lots of problems occurred when switching to 4.26. I still have no idea why, haha. Though, most of the games I’ve worked on are still very early in development so, the problems I had to fix were pretty simple. I’d wager that a basically complete game like yours would have many, many things break when switching to UE5. Lighting being the most obvious. Might not be worth it for you but, for me it was. Modern UI and all that. Good luck on your game. I’ve been following it since dev log 3. I kinda don’t like playing games until they’re finished so, I’m waiting until then to play it :D

      Because it's hard to help charity when you only raise $4,000 because only 50 or 100 people can buy the games bundle. We donated 100k keys as a hard cap and they only sold around 75k bundles. Only about 50k people actually redeemed their keys so we cancelled the other 50k keys. This event requires that you donate 100k keys or you don't participate at all.

That money is then given to specific charities. The developers don't earn any money from the bundle unlike a Humble Bundle charity event. After taking part in one of these Jingle Jam events I personally think they should give 10% back to the developers of the games because the traffic garnered isn't worth the investment. @MichaelKocha  Před rokem

      The game won't run on Mac or iOS. We looked at Steam stats and about 5% of players use macOS. So we can expect a 5% boost in sales by supporting it, which is a nice boost, but not when you consider how much effort maintaining that build on top of Windows is. It would take a lot of work just optimizing for the platform, and then fixing Mac specific bugs is practically impossible on my 2014 Macbook Pro which can't even open the project. Buying a new Macbook for $2500 to $3k would basically cancel out all the sales for the next two years from Mac users. It's just not worth it, unfortunately.

      @@MichaelKocha Unfortunately, I don’t think you can make this game now. You made a successful product and as an executive you needed to pass the coding and design to some hires and concentrate on creative directing and marketing.
      Corridor Digital on CZcams is an excellent example of this. They became victims of their own success and had to pivot in order to continue growing, but this meant they had to give up some creative control. To start, they rebranded their secondary channel from Sam and Niko to Corridor Crew and allowed other, very select, candidates to take control and it has ballooned to such amazing success under the direction of Sam and Niko. Even further than their main channel.
      All this to say, you are controlling too much and I think that is stifling the games success. Marketing sells the game and brings in the bucks and you did so well with that making consistent dev logs in the early days. Keeping the game in the public eyes sells copies of your game and further expands your reach.
      I’m rooting for you!
