  • The Asics Metaspeed Sky Paris and Edge Paris are two brand new marathon racing shoes released in time for the 2024 summer Olympics. On paper, they are designed to serve two different types of runners, with the Sky for people who run faster by increasing their stride length (taking bigger steps) and the Edge for people who run faster by increasing their cadence (taking more steps). In this video, I give an overview of both shoes, run identical workouts in them and let you know which one is best for you.
    If you're considering buying one of these shoes, using my Running Warehouse links will help support the channel. Also Running Warehouse offers free 90 day returns, which is a huge plus for these race shoes and making sure you get the right fit.

    Thx 4 the videos on these shoes. I first ordered the sky and tried it on, way to snug of a fit than I usually have in a men’s size 10. I then ordered the Edge instead but this time in a size 11, I like to have some room for my toes in shoes overall.

    I appreciate your honesty in yesterday’s video it made me realize that as a much older slower, 8 min/mile Marathon pace, the Edge was not for me and I returned it. I also appreciate that you provided some alternative options like the NB that I never would have considered, but will try the Saucony Pro 4. I think with these “Super Shoes” we need to understand what the true benefit if any will be for us middle of the pack runners.

      Similarly, I bought the Endorphin Pro 4 as my Ironman shoe hoping to run around 3:30 to 3:45 off the bike. I intend to use the Sky or Edge for short distance triathlons where the run is 5K. I may try it for a Half Ironman too which is a Half Marathon run.

    As I understand ASICS, you are indeed supposed to look at the percentage increase of each; typically a stride runner will show numbers like yours. Mine are the same as yours, and I've always considered myself a stride runner.
    As you note, putting the plate higher theoretically lets the greater force of the stride runner depress it more, resulting in greater forward propulsion. Nike has a similar distinction between the Alphafly (loading the pods) and the Vaporfly (lower/spoon plate).

    I have been putting around 20 miles in both the edge and the sky now, and did a half marathon in the sky. and I LOVE BOTH of the shoes. the edge is a more agressive vaporfly like shoe whilst the sky is more of a alphafly and also more forgiving shoe. I cannot decide which one to pick. I should be a cadance runner lol, because short legs, but i found the sky is just such a great shoe to move between paces. whilst the edge, is like super hard to move between paces.

    • @viCoN24
      @viCoN24 Před 2 měsíci

      Short legs don't mean much in this comparison as the increases in cadence or stride length should be relative to your slower runs. It's about what happen when you speed up. I feel that weight might be more important because it would determine how much foam is compressed. If you don't dig into the foam too much, you most likely wouldn't feel much of a difference between the shoes but I'm just guessing. Cheers!

    I remember seeing graphs of stride length and cadence increase for bpth types of runners when the first generation of the Metaspeeds was released. For stride runners, stride length increased, but cadence didn’t (at all). For cadence runners BOTH stride length and cadence increased with increasing speed.

    My thoughts after running in both is exactly the same as you.
    On Tuesday, I ran 2 miles easy, warm up, 1 mile @ tempo, 6x400s in the edge,
    Changed shoes to sky, I ran
    6x400s, 2 miles cool down. The 2nd set in the sky after two reps I was 15 seconds faster than edge, but I didn't feel beaten up like I usually am after intervals and could have done more.
    Now, I'm age 68 and around a 3:30/45 marathon, so slower than yourself.
    My conclusion after this session for me is:
    Sky=5k/10k for a faster race.
    Edge=HM to marathon , like you, the edge would be more comfortable over the distance.
    Our conclusion was the same.
    BTW I consider myself to be a cadence runner. 👍

      Sky = little bit lighter, less dense foam (softer) better for opening the stride so you need to load the foam/plate
      Edge = little bit more denser (harder) foam and heavier, little bit more snug fitting too and better for cadence style runner because they are little bit harder + the plate design it’s better suited for high turnover legs.

    I bought the Sky a few weeks ago because of all the amazing reviews, and after two short tryout runs, I worried that it was a mistake. It is definitely an aggressive shoe and I am glad Yowana points out the paces where it comes alive. I ran my first marathon recently in the Endorphins Pro 3 at 3:29 and had a great experience. The Sky Paris is too aggressive for me to take at that distance or pace, but I just ran a 19:30 5K where the Sky felt amazing. My stride increased to 1.5m in that 5K whereas I averaged 1.2m stride in my marathon at the slower pace. The energy return and lightweight are awesome at faster pace, but feels a little unstable and out of rhythm for me at any pace slower than 7:00.

    I think even with the cadence/stride discussion, foot strike plays a big role. heel strike will favor the edge, mid/forefoot will favor the sky. If you aren't loading hard off the forefoot with the sky, its going to feel harder without any extra benefit. If you are forefoot, the edge may just feel too soft without the rebound you want. SURPRISINGLY, the toe-off shape is is actually more aggressive in the sky (not the entire shape, just at the toe)... its like comparing the endorphin elite vs endorphin pro.

    You need to find ASICS scatterplot data on this. There are some runners who almost entirely speed up by cadence increases. And others that do a combination but increase cadence a lot. I am 53 now, but when I was in my 30s and still reasonably fast, my cadence at ~7:20/mile pace (how I ran my easy runs ) was 158 or so. At 5k race pace - under 5:00/mile pace - it would be around 180+. That is a cadence runner. I also increase my stride length but not as much relatively. In the Asics data it was really easy to see on the scatterplot generated by all their subjects - I wish I could still find it. There are literally people who when speeding up from 7:00 pace to 5:00 pace don't increase their cadence by more than a few spm. That blows my mind, but it is totally true. And my guess is that forefoot/heel striking tracks somewhat with this difference.

    Love the edge. But im not a forefootstriker if im running serious.. edge is designed for heel strikers in my opinion.. also the plate on the edge is more similar to the vaporfly. While the sky is more alphafly esque. Bouncy stiff forefoot platform vs rolling through the stride on the edge.
    I like forefoot running but my heartbeat is much lower while heel or midfoot striking. Maybe cause its smoother?
    When i forefoot i do use my calfs and achilles tendon to bounce more.. but when i midfoot. I gently land on the outer lateral part of my foot, rool into the mid forfoot and glide along.. barely any impact force. Maybe could explain the heartrate diff. Excuse my rambling. 😂

    In my runs longer fast distances only see like 4 spm increase but shorter fast distances up to 5k can go up to 10-15spm i guess its easier to keep higher cadence for shorter burst while its easier to keep longer strdies for longer distances

    So sky for faster paces & would you say it would be the fastest for a 5/10k?

    I wonder what its like for someone that has higher cadence. Im more 180 at my easy, 190-200 pushing into the 7s high 6s.
    So weird. Who knows, i have the big foot problems anyway lol

    So if i have Endorphin Pro 3; is Asics Edge a better upgrade than Endorphin Pro 4?

    • @supwell
      @supwell  Před 2 měsíci +2

      Great question - depends on your paces and goal race. For sub 3 marathon, I'd pick one of these Asics. For anything 3:30+ the pro 4 is definitely a better choice. If you're between 3 and 3:30 it will depend if you want something more comfortable (pro 4) or more aggressive (edge)

      same problem; i am in between; i.e. 3:09:59

      @@markoljustina if you want that fast and aggressive feeling then the Paris shoes definitely deliver that at that 7:00 min/mile marathon pace. Pro 4 feels a little more soft, bouncy and stable at that pace. So depends if you want aggressive or comfortable

    I'm an Ascis fan and if I was going to buy a racer from them, it would be the MetaSpeed Edge Paris for the reasons you confirmed several times : stability !
    But even the Edge Paris might not be that stable for me, it seems like the Magic Speed 3 that I got and it is not that wide and stable as I
    Would like it to be in the heel / middle foot area . For shorter distances the Magic Speed 3 works marvelous to me but more them ~14km I start to overpronate and lose stamina fast ...

      @MiracleWarriors Před 2 měsíci +1

      Oh, just remembered that I kept hearing everywhere:
      The Magic Speed 3 is very similar to the MetaSpeed Edge line. The position of the plate is similar.

    I think Stride vs Cadence is a marketing BS from ASICS which is not corroborated by any independent research. This new iteration (Paris) has equalized the stack, foam, weight of the shoe so the only difference is the plate shape and placement making it easier to test such claims. Oldmanrunner has been collecting data to validate ASICS claims and recently published a video on his YT channel. He also posted links to his STRYD pod data. Basically, there is really not much difference between these two shoes. Obviously, one shoe will feel better than the other based on landing patterns and comfort feel. But as you can see from marketing descriptions ASICS is struggling to describe the shoes.
    In other words, I don't think Stride vs Cadence has much scientific basis. In fact, you should not be looking at just one or the other. I would look at how my cadence x stride length is changing from easy pace to race pace. Normally both will increase but the which gives the best combined effect wins. In that respect, Oldmanrunner's data shows that these two shoes are virtually a tie (at least for him, n=1 test).
