  • T125 shop vac switch repaired today. I went ahead and adjusted the shorter copper spring so that it would make better contact. So far it works great.

That was hilariously unexpected! No one ever expects to get jumped by a Shop-Vac. Good video and thanks for the laugh.

Thanks for showing the switch apart. I took mine apart by pushing the side pins on the plastic rocker switch in and pushing it out the top. A small piece of plastic from the larger toggle had broken off and fallen into the bottom of one side. After removing this and cleaning the carbon off everything I put it back together and am back in business. Also, put a few drops of 3 in 1 oil on the top of the motor shaft as it had started to squeal. It sounds good and works good. Many Thanks !

Sorry to hear about your finger. I hope you're all back to normal again. I did look around for the switch before I repaired it. The ones I found were not the same type. The one I had in there had a rocker on the top, so it could switch between on and off. I decided to try it for myself. Thanks for the story, I'm glad to hear someone else "forgot the golden rule." Take care.

I have to laugh! I took my shop vac apart right down to the switch. I started the switch when all was apart. I had removed the bottom shield for the fan part of the motor. As the motor started it flew out of my hands (just like your video). Only problem is, the fan caught my finger and removed 3 layers of skin and left a cut big enough for 3 stitches. Glad I am not the only one that forgot a golden rule. Glad you didn't injure yourself. BTW, many places sell that kind of switch. Cheers

GRS-4021 is the switch model. I can see this switch on amazon for $15 and purchased it. I wish I could find this video earlier and attempt to clean the swtich.

  • @sickstringsglockman7926

Literally did that today. The spinny part.

Thanks a lot. My switch is exactly like yours on my 4 gallon 4.5 hp Shop-Vac. It was very helpful but I wish you showed how you took the switch apart. The devil is in the details.

Can somone explain to me why the Shop Vacs are set up as a Double Pole Single Throw switch rather than a Single Pole Single Throw switch? Is it just to give it an extra fail point?

That is a question i have asked on several shop vac videos. No one can answer. Plug is polarized, grounded, why switch the neutral side and hot?

It is so that if you are vacuuming water the float switch will disengage if it gets too full.

My switch was bad (loose connection on the pins) and ordered a replacement. I don't have much electrical background so can someone comment on wire placement? Obviously there is black and white, and two reds. Thanks.

@@kestrelaerialimaging628 mouser electronics had them cheapest but you can use just about any rocker switch.

I had to pry one side of the "rocker" out a bit to get the nipple out enough, and it just popped out. I used a small jewlers flat head. Sorry bout that.

+Don 99 Also Shop-Vac doesn't sell switches, so the 2 rectangular holes on the rocker are not found on similar switches. Need to take off the rocker to put on a new switch if I buy one but with the info you gave me I'll try to repair the old one. One copper spring to the neutral post is shortened like yours was but more so.
