SIG P320 Out Of Battery Solved!

  • In this episode, I explain the lock up and battery problems with the Sig Sauer P320 X5 FDE and other 320's. The fix involves modifications to your slide that some people may not want to perform and thats ok! Please take this educational information at face value and perform these mods at your own risk. Please fully understand the mechanics of any firearm before making major alterations or changes that cannot be reversed. Also consider that these modifications may void your warranty and Sig may choose not to repair other aspects of you sidearm if issues arise over the course of its life. I, personally, am of the mindset that i'm in complete control of this machine and any and all repairs would be carried out by myself without the assistance of Sig armorers. Ultimately all guns are machines and do not function without the direct interaction by humans.

    Staggering that you'd need to do such a modification on a $600-$1000 gun.

    THANKS A MILLION!!! I just went through that during some training this weekend! On the plus side, I became a “tactical reload master” in the process as I mitigated my way through the course. I thought I would need to replace that reset after cleaning it with the same issue. Did your fix, now I’m back in the game! 🙌🏽

    I wish I would have seen this before I sent my X5 in for the trigger upgrade. Sig’s response is if the slide goes forward when the slide catch is released it functions.

  • @mikem5389
    @mikem5389 Před 2 lety +4

    I can almost guarantee your trigger will depress out of batter now. The disconnector will fall into that channel/optic hole and allow the trigger to pull and the firing pin to release IF the trigger is pulled just before the slide is fully back in battery. The slide will be out of battery enough to not allow the firing pin to hit the fresh round's primer. BUT if the trigger is not released in time you will chamber a fresh round with a dead trigger. You can remove the FCU and slide it into the slide and watch exactly when the sear releases and what position the slide is in. Sig released a new generation of this slide that has a larger gap between the optic hole and the disconnector channel.

    Thank you so much for taking the time to make this video. It was very helpful to me. I had the same problem on my Sig P320 X5 Legion.
    While I wasn't quite ready to take a Dremel to my slide, after watching your video I found out that I could eliminate 90%+ of the problem by simply insuring that area just ahead of the hole is wet with lube.
    I did the experiment multiple times. Totally clean/dry - fails to go into battery without a healthy slide rack, and 1 out of 100 rounds on live fire. With it wet/lubed goes into battery every time with the minimal slide movement needed to reset the trigger during practice and no failures in live fire.
    Incidentally, I just found out that my X5 trigger will fire the striker if I keep it up to about 1/8th of an inch out of battery - that is a bit scary, not sure the striker would light a round, but I thought modern firearms were supposed to prevent that. Does your X5 do that?

    Fantastic find! Did you share this with Sig? The sad thing about this flaw is that it seems nearly impossible that Sig would not have seen the issue in testing and, yet, the problem got to retail production. This issue has been the final delay in me ordering a P320 for carry. I'll order an X-Change kit for a spare slide to modify so I don't void the warranty. Maybe the way to do it is to order the FCU so I can get it warrantied even if I do modify my slide. Anyway, this is a very helpful video; thanks for figuring it out and posting it.

    You can also shim the disconnector or mod the head of the disconnector, so it rides on the outside of the hole and not the inside. Only takes a few thousandths. It's BS they went out of their way to remove material from the disconnector at the top (and in that direction by design), which makes certain it will ride in the hole and get stuck. I really can't see a reason they did that. (If you look at the bird head, you can see the inner edge is not as thick as the rest of the disconnector. It actually gets thinner twice).

       @elzippo488 They're good guns and they did fix the issue with new models that came out since. I'm not sure if the XCompact models are still designed like that though. I just know they fixed it when they got rid of the ridiculously stupid rear sight that was held on by the plate (and switched to a dovetail sight farther back). They're good, high quality handguns otherwise. The safety issues have been investigated and proven to not be the fault of the gun or its design. In nearly every single case they ever "just went off" or "went off by themselves" it was 100% the fault of the owner/operator... and I only say "nearly" because there are a few of the most recent cases that either haven't been resolved and/or I just haven't found information on them yet. With 27 out of 27 of the first 27 cases being proven to be the fault of the owner/operator... the odds that these most recent cases are actually the fault of the gun/design are very slim. It's very unlikely that they just magically started being unsafe firearms (despite their reputation which is based off lies and ignorance).

    Sig has a faulty design in the P320. incorrectly sprung which leads to OOB discharges. I've seen multiple case ruptures on these pistols. Years ago I took the P320 armorer course and tried to get into the firearm but my experience with it has lead me away. Add to the issue Sig's awful machining work of pre-drop safety P320's along with their weak QC and CS one has a pretty terrible pistol. I understand many are enthusiastic about the pistol god bless them.

    WRONG, you could not be more misinformed. The original P320 did not have a disconnector. That was the issue, anyone can get the legal brief online. SIG was hiding the defect when they had the voluntary upgrade for the trigger issue, they would also put the disconnector and a divot on the slide. Please do more research before you give advice like this.

  • @brucegray5139
    @brucegray5139 Před 10 měsíci

    This is misinformation based upon a misunderstanding of how the P320 functions. Do not do this. When firing, the trigger will always be held to the rear and the disconnector will be "down." The disconnector thus won't catch in the sight plate hole because it's not under tension from the trigger bar spring in this position. The Legion sight plate holes are in a different position than the original X5, and the ramp was added to ease initial chambering from a full
    magazine when using the 12.5X recoil spring (which I do not recommend for different reasons). In the Legion, the ramp is sufficiently ahead of the disconnector cam cut to permit disconnect function when firing. All he has done to his older pistol is to make it possible for his pistol to drop the striker further out of full battery.
