- For millions of people with Parkinson’s disease, movement becomes much harder. But researchers have found that dance therapy may help them both physically and mentally.

What about ataxia? Would it help with that?
This is tangentially great advocacy for arts education. We like to say that music is important because it can help us be better at math, that dance can give us better performance in sports.. But on their own, the arts are an integral part of who we are as a species. They are good for us without the need for secondary benefits. Our bodies and brains are stronger when we participate in artistic pursuits.
@Robert Kelly Actually, that's not even close to accurate, especially in regards to musical activities. One of the current more prevalent beliefs as to why music takes up so much brain power is because it was integral to our species' cohesion within tribes and groups. Psychologically, music is powerful on the brain. In a nutshell, this brain synchronization creates an ability to bond with others, which holds clear benefits in mutual cooperation, which translates to a survival advantage as we evolved from living in smaller groups to complex ones. It still works today. Think group singing at sporting events, religious services, etc. There is usually a reason when our brains have so many connections and resources set up to wire to music beyond, "too much time on our hands", which I'm sure our ancestors did not have. Early slaves and others trapped in miserable work environments survived mentally in part due to their chants and spiritual songs. It is to our detriment to shove it aside as nothing more than a fancy of the lazy.
@Robert Kelly yeah, a painting killed your family. I'm so sorry dude.
@Robert Kelly I'm not familiar with Chris Pratt. Is he the artist who painted the painting who killed your family?
@Robert Kelly Wow, that's some powerful denial. I'm certainly not qualified to help you through an issue as substantial as the loss of your family, never mind in such an unusual way (killed by a painting). I'd suggest you seek out a licenced psychologist.
@Robert Kelly You're right. Everyone all over the planet has the exact way of looking at things as you do. No one likes anything or finds anything important that isn't exactly as you see the world.
And soundtracks are useless. Glad no one wants to go to the movies ever again. It's useless. Listening to music while you workout? Pshaw! Those musicians are worthless wastes of oxygen. I'm glad you've never spent a dime on anything so invaluable. My bad for thinking otherwise. Carry on.
My Mum has Parkinson's, and her support network has really been emphasising dance therapy, especially during the Covid lockdown. Really nifty to see the science behind it, thank you!
I never realized how good SciShow Psych was until I started Intro to Psychology.
In the practice where I work as a secretary we have flyers laid out for dancing for Parkinson patients and quite a few of our Parkinson patients enjoy the dancing very much. Excellent!
Fascinating. I have a yoga teacher friend who teaches a class specifically for people with Parkinson's after he had the experience of living with two people with Parkinson's like diseases, both of whom found certain aspects of the yoga very helpful.
I've trained in multiple dance forms, but improvisational dance & varieties of belly dance have helped me the most with focus & mood. I've been lucky enough to teach these courses & I hope to continue once a coronavirus vaccine is provided for all of our lovely folks in America.
You might want to start your CZcams channel on your wonderful skill. Just incase it last longer than what we hope.
@@crybebebunny oh with how vaccines work and the testing etc.
That will be in 2 yrare
And yet, when I dance, I look like I've got Parkinson's.
Love this! Got me thinking about psychology and dance 💃🏽
Anecdotal evidence: I have some ballance issues that are better when dancing or moving to music. Even if it's just a rythm I imagine (I remember a song and I don't sing it) or if I clap or something. Might be placebo or I might imagine the improvement.
It’s interesting that you mention that. I’m also normally not great with balance (as in sometimes I’ll get off-balance just standing or get disoriented going around a corner). But I do partner swing dancing and have also noticed I don’t have balancing issues during that. Unless I get spun multiple times in a row, but that’s just dizziness.
@@invisibleninja86 samesies :)
I find it easier to balance when the song stuck in my head has a clear rhythm.
Happened to find it out during my depression .Seems like it was correct. Thanks Hank.
Hank danced into my heart and mind today
No disrespect
Much luv
As soon as he said walking to the beat of music I suddenly had Stayin' Alive in my head lol
The more reason for me to dance like nobody’s s watching
I freakin love you guys
I've been watching Sci Show Psych for a while. I liked their videos. That is why I decided to create my own sci-fi/futurist Channel. 👍🙂
I hope all you SciShow hosts are well! It seems to me that lately most videos are done by Hank Green. Not that I do not like you, Hank, but I still miss all the other SciShow hosts! :)
That explains the recent release of Back To The Future : The Musical ! :P
this seems real interesting. I wonder how much more VR would have to improve to allow for imaging of the brain while simulating dancing etc.
cool! music definitely has amazing, mystical effects on humans
There's a reason drumming and seaside pillaging to hand in hand.
Yay Dancing! :D

Three words: Geriatric Mosh Pit.
I’ve heard improv classes are really good for Parkinson’s
😀
I have a question. since excessive amounts of Dopamine can lead to schizophrenia can dancing actually make their symptoms worse?
It probably isn’t so simple
Please do a video on the evolution of the mammal foreskin. Thank you!
I don't know why but this made me burst out laughing
@@stephlrideout
Why is the wholeness of the male body funny to you?
@@gregorymalchuk272 its not, it just seemed so out of place as a comment on this video
It’s probably a remnant of the sheath that other mammals’ penises retract into when they’re not aroused. I would assume it persisted to protect the glans from being damaged or overstimulated. That’s just my thoughts, but it would make an interesting video for the main Sci-Show channel. Maybe suggest it there, too.

YES!! My point is that it serves biological functions, and then implicitly it is unacceptable for religious lunatics and Americans to be permitted to cut them off of infant boys without consent.
1:58 So can coconut oil
do you suggest using coconut oil as a control or what? That would be interesting though
Oh wow, that's pretty neat. Do we know whether it would help to prevent Parkinson's?🤔
1:58
"It MIGHT produce compounds that protect neurons from damage."
So this is a possibility, yes.
In any case, dancing is great :p
Unlikely, but research into why it helps so many PD patients could help develop better/more precise medical interventions. Especially the surgical options, I imagine.
My dad does boxing for his Parkinson's.
That might be counter productive. The risk of injury makes me worried. Just tell them to be safe.
i wish different danced could cure different diseases.
cyrilio, if it could, we’d probably find out the worst diseases could only be cured by mastering the most difficult dance moves ever. That would be our luck.
well there is music therapy
Someone tweet this @jschlatt
With parkinson's movement actually becomes easier ... :D
i don't understand dancing. it's gross and awkward, and nobody appreciates it. why do some then take it as if it were as important as music?
They should try hydrocloriquil
Immunosuppressive drugs increase the risk of developing Parkinson's Disease. Don't ever take that type of drug when you have a dopamine deficiency.
No, you need to introduce UV light inside of the body.
