      I'm in my last year of dental hygiene school. It's likely that you just have a mild case of gingivitis at the moment (so no need to worry about Alzheimer's just yet). It's important that you don't let up on brushing though, even if your gums are sensitive &/or bleeding. Of course, I'd also recommend getting a regular check-up at a dental office where you can get your gums looked at and your teeth cleaned (which can help with the inflammation). And ask your dental hygienist about the proper brushing and flossing techniques so that you can be confident that you are being as effective as possible.

    Huh, back in my teens I went through a phase where I rarely brushed my teeth (stupid, yes I know), and when I would my gums would start to bleed. Some years later I developed a cyst in my head (not pleasant, I tell ya); hearing this makes me wonder if there's some connection there.

Thought I'd pulled something, but then in the weeks after I had the literal worst headaches imaginable, 8 or 9 on the pain scale and I'm being conservative. Went that way for nearly two months before I got myself to the doc who sent me to the hospital where they found a cyst less than half a millimeter from completely covering some ventricle. Had it moved to completely cover it, I would've been dead within the day. :'D

      Gut flora balance has a factor in it.

    • @asteroses
      @asteroses Před 4 lety +6

      Well, not taking care of basic hygiene can feed depression even as it becomes harder and harder to get yourself to do. I'd wager it is possible but not probable, and hard to prove. Depression doesn't have a definitive biomarker like Alzheimer's does, and what treatments are effective varies significantly (but is well worth figuring out!) Gut biome is a possible and in at least some cases likely influential factor, definitely more provably so than periodontal disease. Speaking as someone in the behavioral health side of the psych field who has had both functional/low level and debilitating Depression on and off herself. Taking care of dental hygiene is very likely to help Depression at least a little bit, especially if periodontal diseases are getting a foothold, and definitely if you have fears about it and Alzheimer's.

    And while there isn’t a clear cause and effect relationship between gum disease and Alzheimer’s, there’s enough of a connection that people should exercise a bit of caution. Individuals that are having issues with their gums should treat them because all of these things point to the effects of gum disease and oral health on overall health. - Dr. Lisa Germain.

Now that they have it, they're extremely mindful of their oral hygiene, never ever braking the rules, but it's not like it can go away.
