  • Practicing and upgrading DJ equipment may seem like a good thing, but too much of it can be a form of procrastination - delaying and inhibiting you from what you should really be doing with your time and money.
You should rather be using what your skillset and what you have to do the best of your ability. It’s better to focus on what’s really needed than what is simply “wanted”.

    ►SCRIPT
When I started out DJ’ing, I thought to myself that if I could win a bunch of DJ competitions, I could probably land a gig.
That if learned the most complicated DJ trick out there, I could be the most requested and sought out DJ.
And that if I spend countless amounts of money on DJ gear and online tutorials, I could even be the world’s number 1 DJ.
And so I spent that time, and spent that money.
And at the of the day, did I become the worlds number 1 DJ. No.
At the end of the day, I was still a shy anti social bedroom DJ with no gigs, and no friends.
Looking back now, I realized that I was just procrastinating.
Yeah, I pulled the trigger and bought DJ gear, and yeah I knew how to do the autobahn scratch at 18 years old.
But I didn’t know how to socialize, make friends, and more importantly get gigs and build my career.
And So the mistake I don’t want you guys to make is to think that skills and gear are everything. They are not. But’s it not all bad news.
If you want to get gigs. It’s pretty simple
go out, socialize, make those connections and build a reputation with promoters, clubs and other DJ’s. Be friends with them and support their night. They’ll be more bound to book you than your skills, because they actually know you, and hopefully like you.
If you want to be good in DJ’ing, don’t spend a lot of money on expensive and even excessive DJ courses.
Most of the techniques they teach you are kinda irrelavant.
Because when you’re Dj’ing in front of a crowd, they don’t really care if you know how to do a loop sync transition, or build up filter chorus switch transition or a swing flare scratch. They don’t even know what the heck 90% of technical DJ’ing is.
But what the crowd does know is if you’re beat matching correctly, blending songs smoothly and more importantly, selecting the right songs at the right time.
And knowledge and experience on that & building a vibe and a good time, cannot be bought.
And the same goes to real DJ skills and buying expensive DJ gear.
Just because you own the latest and greatest DJ gear. Does not make you an amazing DJ.
Yeah, it looks cool and it’ll get you a lot of likes and views. But it’s just gear.
It’s what you do with it, that matters.
So to you beginner DJ’s. Props on buying your first DJ gear and deciding to be a DJ. That really is one of the hardest yet easiest steps to make in your journey.
So The next thing you should focus now on, is building your fundamentals in mixing, and blending in music. Please please please, focus and master that first before moving on to anything else.
And once you do master that, and have a desire to be more than a bedroom DJ. Freaking go out, have fun, party, socialize, and make those connections.
Because gigs and success won’t come to you just by being skilled and rich.
Because success only happens when you get out from your comfort zone aka as your bedroom.

Man! You just throwed a stone to my head! You have made me realized what I already knew... I need to go out of my comfort zone and stop procrastinating. You made me realize that the few gigs I got actually happened because I was socializing. I stopped doing that and I came back to be a bedroom DJ. The awfulness (and awesomeness) of truth just hit me in my face.

Really nice advice Carlo! I realized this a little bit by myself. I learned last year a lot of skills and it’s nice. But I also thought always, big DJs didn’t use this skills on their gigs. They concentrate more on the music production. Why I should spend so much time on skills development? I don’t mean the basics skills (this kind of skills you have to master), I mean advanced skills. I keep always in my mind to produce my own tracks. But this is my second step. I also realized this year, how important connections are! And you don’t have to know a club owner or promoter. Sometime it’s enough if you get know an another DJ which have connections to a club owner or promoter, who can make a little promo for you.
I would love, if you do often videos like this. Or at least one video per month. It motivates people to get out of their comfort zone and go out of their bedroom!

I get you man; Personally, i've started late (2012, at the age of 30). Went to full dj school, and full production course, got everything from new (xone 92, 2 x cdj 2000, cdj 900, 2 x 1210's MK2 + all production kit: Yamaha HS80M, Yamaha NS10M Studio, Yamaha A100 amp, iMac, soundcard & midi). I've also won 3 dj competition in the row within the next year. I've learned the hard way that if you don't have the RIGHT connection/connections will never happen, no matter how much/hard you will try, even socialising and supporting nights, Yes, you will work your way up a little bit, that is correct; however - I'm wondering how many nights Paris Hilton did support until she reached 1 MILLION paid in 4 gigs @ 90 min.per gig.

Just another thought: To DJs today, I would HIGHLY recommend also diving a little bit into some simple production. There is unimaginable value in a DJ who can also produce music, even if It is nothing spectacular because It lets you learn the basics of how songs are arranged and what makes them work well. Just a thought. I do find myself in the production seat more. 😀

Coming from a dj business owner my self what he says is right. Practice, practice and practice some more and learn the skills and craft. Also what I did was record my mixes and played them back to hear the mixing, blending, and transitions. Because while doing so you're all into it and can't really hear the mistakes, but when you listen the recording you can pick up on them and learn what to practice more on.

That is precisely how it works. You have to go out and meet and greet other people, it's what I don't 10 months ago. I've played for a couple promotors now, and hopefully got my self booked for a festival. It's been mental. All because I went out, maned up and spoke to other dj's, gave them a mix to listen to. And it was exax9what they were looking for, for a warm up dj.

No matter how much I mess up, I can always rewind and watch over and over. You are also the only DJ here on YT that I watch in terms of tutorials. Keep it up LODI!
I don't think I will ever become a full time DJ, but I do plenty of family and friend parties. Watching them having a great time to music is reward enough for me. Plus they tell me that the party was fun more so with the music I play. Not to mention I am doing something that I truly enjoy, playing and listening to music.

brilliant advice for the times. I would add: play music you love and DJ for the people dancing, don't DJ just to impress the other DJs. other DJs want your job, they aren't there to dance and support you.

Omg I needed to hear this! I’ve been djing for a month and I know I’m good, but I am nervous to put myself out there (although I know I’m pretty good from my family and friends’ reaction towards my mixing). ❤️ I also just lost my job, and I’ve been a home body to not spend much money. But I have to make some sacrifices.

I get where you are coming from, Carlo. I'm a social introvert. I can be the life of the party for 4 or 5 hours, then I need alone time to recharge. When I was isolated from the crowd in a club, I could do what I wanted and not have to "people". I'll never be a DJ that is always on the mike. Just let me play and mix and make people dance. I will rock a festival stage one day, but I'd rather work in a club and burn the place down every night. My happy place is watching a dancefloor come apart at the seams as I mix from track to track. Best job on the planet.

Really appreciate this, Carlo. I agree that skills aren't everything, but they certainly can help you set yourself apart from the crowd. Networking has mattered so much to me and my career, however. It's been SUCH a blessing to get me gigs that I'd never imagined I'd get, but networking also helped me meet so many amazing people that have helped my journey, too.

This is so true. Even more so for wedding dj's- there your scratch, transitions, etc. doesn't matter that much. Basic beatmatching and song selection- that's what really makes difference. And in club enviroment... I've seen lot of so called dj's who tried to make their sets "cooler" by adding lots of FX, and other stuff and they ended with completely empty dancefloor. No amount of fancy FX will save your set if it's awfully generic and uninspired. BUT, and that a big one, these dj's still got their gigs because they was in good terms with club manager, and some other dj's who actually hold the dancefloor and were making people quite happy was not booked, because they weren't manager's "bros". That's the sad truth of it- sometimes your skill doesn't matter, like, at all. But still that is no excuse for not upping your game. There are cases when skill does matter. And gear...I do think you should try to start with something decent, but there is little point of having full nexus setup in your bedroom.
P.S. What's that track playing in the background? Liked that one.

I restarted on a mix whatever 3 from numark. Returned it after 4 weeks and bought some Stanton 92 tt, sold those and bought 2 Stanton 150 str8 and a mixar duo(when they were 999 with a innofader) 4 months later I bought a s9. I won a s3 in a battle and a set on hdj 7x headphones on a raffle. Somewhere in there I bought a shit mcx8000 which I traded it for some 18” yorkville subs. Then I bought a MacBook Air then a MacBook Pro. Over ten thousand dollars in and yet not 1 gig played. Went like this for over a year then I finally got my first gig(re first) now I do a gig a month(wife makes me turn down a lot) but so much money spent when I could’ve stayed with my mix whatever 3 by numark and made great money with it first. Great video
