About the pill-popping line, i think it makes more sense if you know a bit more about the Korean hip-hop scene. I don't think suga was going after the American rap scene in this song, where a lot of drug use comes from the rough environment people grow up in. It was more about korean rappers who for the most part come from middle class or even more privileged backgrounds and do drugs more to emulate the American scene and feel like they are "cool" or a "a creative genius".
In fact there was one korean rapper who was also part of a kpop group who got busted for buying lsd and some of the texts with his dealer leaked to the press. In those he talked about how he wanted to use lsd "to be a genius".

Yes, Suga was coming for the rap scene and if you know their background, you'll understand why. As teens, Suga and RM were well known in the korean underground rap scene. Because they left underground and joined BTS, they both got a ton of shit for it. The underground rappers criticized them for "not being real rappers", and they also got shit from kpop fans for trying to bring a heavy element of hiphop and rap into the kpop world. So Suga was partly responding to his haters from the underground with this song.
RM himself said he struggled a lot with identity crisis. Later he realized he didn't need labels, terms, or genres to define himself. Some songs he writes reflect this struggle and his resolution.
It would have been really nice if you had watched the music video after doing the color-coded lyrics! It's a pretty amazing music video, high production quality. And it really adds to the song, you can see how he performs it as a rapper. He released the song free of charge, so it's nice to support the music video.
As you tell from the sound, he mixed traditional korean music with rap. So the music video depicts traditional korean culture, Suga plays 2 roles - an emperor and a commoner. The video depicts a story related to the song.

the music video is a cinematic masterpiece, tells a story and is also very badass, i feel like it adds a lot to the song, you should watch it next... It has a lot of traditional korean culture elements on it which fits with the instrumental and elements of the song itself. the lyric video took the music video audio which is why there's a pause, since the music video tells a whole story and a lot of BTS songs have these moments where they stop the music around the bridge of the song and show only the music video as emphasis on the storyline or symbolism. It always look absolutely stunning because they have a movie production type of music video

Yay the most popular of AgustD songs. He didn’t do any promotion for this album or song and it absolutely blew up. As far as being mean online for being a BTS fan the Juicewrld collab brought out a fair amount of initial racism and hate for people who weren’t willing to be open, and given this was the second collab with Juucewrld it was a true tribute track with a fellow rapper friend and collaborator that Suga very much respected. Of note on his song is how complex the song is. Suga is a fairly brilliant genius level producer/ composer he creates songs and beats that are just so fresh. In this using traditional classical Korean instruments used for Daechwita (a traditional form of military music used to announce the king kind of a form of music like hail to the chief of ancient times). He uses many references to Korean history throughout the MV and lyrics. In addition in the MV he is both the blond mad king drunk on power and fame and the black haired young commoner who fights himself and his own greed for fame and money and kills his greed to be more authentic to himself. BTS songs and especially MVs are almost always an onion of layers of meanings and metaphors, the exception being their 3 fully English pop songs (all 3 released as fun tracks to help cheer up fans because of the pandemic and I also wonder if they don’t think English speaking audiences can handle their full metaphor game). Suga is Min Yoongi and AgustD. Watch the MV it’s one of the most cinematic music videos ever shot. He’s lost friends in the rap world to drugs/prison so he has always spoken up against it in many songs.

He doesn't just hate people who use drugs, but he thinks that he criticizes people who do drugs and influence others by justifying that this is for 'my art'.

Oh gosh. I hope you watched the official music video. Honestly BTS made me recheck my own prejudices and it was a shame how much I closed myself from things I had preconceived notions for. BTS is the best catalyst. As for pill poppers I think I remember reading someone give context that in SK there are some rappers who sort of cosplay being a rapper by overcompensating with what they think the image of a rapper is rather than learning the culture and honing their actual skills. Many put on the image they think is a rapper. And Suga is possibly calling out those rappers in SK. Like the lyric goes his country (SK) is too small to hold him because he's a worldwide artist and rapper, unlike those who's heads are too big despite just swimming in a pond as compared to Yoongi's ocean arena. Something like that. I learned considering BTS is a SK artist, we , as consumers are invited to learn about their culture so it's so interesting to view it not just with what we're accustomed to but in parallel to their culture and history. Anyways thanks for the reaction and for being respectful. Yes, a lot of people are mean to BTS fans (ARMY) because of their preconceived notions on BTS. A lot of us have to deal with that even from people we never thought we have to protect ourselves from, like family and supposed friends. I think you missed out a bit by not watching the MV. The visual story-telling builds off of the lyrics and adds a whole other layer to the song, so you only got half the experience this way. Besides that, this lyric video ripped their translation right from the MV's official closed captions anyway. But I still enjoyed your reaction!
As for the lines about pill-poppers, I was initially surprised about this take as well. It's worth noting that South Korea has incredibly strict drug laws and doing any kind of street drug is much more frowned upon by the general public. With that said, in addition to "pill-poppers," the Korean word can also be translated as weak/fragile. (I usually refer to translation blogs, such as muish's ramblings and doolset bangtan, that offer more literal translations that also explain any double-entendres whenever I want to dig deeper into BTS lyrics).
My understanding of these lines in context is that his criticism is more for Korean rappers that are all swagger and attitude rather than any substance or skill. In that sense, I think the criticism of their drug use is that that's also part of their shallow image as rappers. They try to appear cool by doing drugs like the stereotype of American rappers, whose style of dress they also mimic, but really it just shows how "weak" they are when it comes down to actual ability (in contrast to Suga's "genius," aka his talent).

    • @kristannewell3455
      @kristannewell3455 Pƙed 2 lety +14

I should also add that the BTS rappers, including Suga, received a lot of unfair criticism from a portion of the Korean rap scene back in the day, and I think these lines are somewhat responding to that (and the ongoing bias many have towards them because they're "idol rappers"). They were accused of "selling out" and not being real rappers because they were kpop idols with a different image than what their detractors thought was acceptable for the hip hop scene. They were called girls to their face for wearing makeup and other sexist insults. None of the criticisms had anything to do with their rap skills or their actual music, and the rappers hating on them admitted they hadn't even listened to anything of theirs.
I think that's why in Daechwita there's the line, "All shit-talk, they got no game." Suga's critique of the "pill-popping rappers" is about a lack of substance. And I think specifically he's referring to Korean rappers that have insulted them in the past rather than just trying to stigmatize drug users in general.
Sorry for the long-ass comment! Lyrical analysis is my jam.

By the way, the name Suga comes from the first syllables of "shooting guard", he loves basketball and played it when he was at school.
Agust D is just Suga backwards, plus DT in the front. Which stands for Daegu Town, his hometown.
His real name is Min Yoongi (Min being his surname. In korea, your family name is put first)
Another famous k-hiphop artist is BeWhy, he's an amazing korean rapper. Check out Challan, Gottasadae or Side by Side.
Challan is very intricately composed, and really shows of his genius artistry and rapping abilities.
Gottasadae is a more straightforward song, but still very good and skillful.
Side By Side is the end credits song for a very popular Netflix korean show called Sweet Home (apocalyptic-horror).

This was awesome to watch, love to see bts change people’s interpretations about them, they’re very complex group.
And Suga is talking more about the Korean hip hop scene rather than the American one, just so you have some context he was active in the underground hip hop scene previous to being in bts and all his underground “friends” started to hate on him once he chose to go more mainstream.
He likes to be direct with his lyrics and doesn’t censor nothing in his solo music

I now understand more about the group and how deep they are as humans and am so so mesmerized by them as humans and as artist, there work ethic is reminiscent of the greats, MJ often comes to mind with this band because of the work they put into there art, they are a one of a kind band and I’m absolutely Army now 💜

This song, which I first watched as a MV about a year ago, is what brought me to BTS. The MV is a masterpiece - visually stunning, with the amazing music, and, something that is typical of much of BTS' music and MVs, multiple layers of meaning, definitely worth watching. Both of Agust D's mixtapes are insane. RM's and J-Hopes are also amazing in a very different way. I'm an old metal head as well, all the same groups you mentioned, and I've come to love all of BTS music. I only watched the MV (which YT recommended to me out of the blue, I have no idea what their algo is) because the picture reminded me of the old Hong Kong martial arts movies I used to watch at a little movie house way back when. It reminds me very much of them still.

As you fall into the BTS rabbit hole (yes, that's what you are doing...it is ok...we all went through this process)you will find more and more layers of artistry in their work. You will see background stories, human psychology insights, deep messages of self-reflection...all of this changes you...changes the way you see yourself and the world around you. It all starts with "I just want to know their names" or "wow that song was catchy maybe I should hear more". I have seen this process happen many many times...doesn't matter the age, ethnicity, religion, or gender of the listener. BTS really touches your heart in a way you will never forget. Enjoy this journey and welcome to our BTS ARMY family.

I continue to listen to all genres but I have to say my daughter accidentally introducing me to K-pop has been refreshing! Great music is great music - glad I opened my eyes and ears to it. It basically pits the "mad king" version of himself against the down-to-earth version. If you watch it, please do a reaction. There is soooo much for army to explain. Most of their MV's have English captions, btw. Suga and RM were underground rappers who received a lot of flack from that community for choosing to be idols. J-Hope learned to rap after joining BTS. They did quite a few dis tracks dealing with the criticism from underground rappers, but they've said they're not going to be doing that anymore. Keep digging in. There is soooo much more. Thanks for the reaction.

He's the one with blonde hair in the FESTA video you reacted to, and he is the leader for BTS. You can view it 2 ways. Lyric video or look for english sub titles and use that version. Thank you for giving BTS a chance. I've a lot of people in my life who simply refuse to TRY to listen to a BTS song critically but without bias(b/c is pop music or its in another language, or even everybody likes it so I don't... -_-'), to determine if they actually like it or not.
I paused & went to watch your Juice World/Suga Reaction before continuing with this video. Yoongi (Suga/Agust D's real name) is an amazing Producer, Lyricist & Rapper. All of the members of BTS take part in making BTS's music and all of the rappers (Suga, J-Hope, RM/Rap Monster) have solo mixtapes; still waiting on the vocalists' mixtapes, but they're coming. A little tidbit that came to mind when you were talking about possible adds. All of BTS's solo work, whether its the rappers' mixtapes or just singles the vocalists have released are all available on their SoundCloud for free.
Suga & RM collaborated with Juice World on another track for their game "BTS World" 's soundtrack. "All Night" doesn't have a MV so you would need to check out the color-coded lyrics. I see you have checked out a couple of other BTS MVs, so I'll assume you know now that they have English CCs on them. I'll wait until I've seen all you've reacted to before providing any more suggestions.

Sorry i’m commenting so late. I’m a huge rock/punk fan that’s been into Metallica, Korn, Filter, Minor Threat, Led Zeppelin, Joy Division, Nirvana etc and growing up hated anything related to pop especially “boy bands” like Nsync, Backstreet boys. But have been generally open minded otherwise. I listened to a lot of hip hop rap like Public Enemy, Tupac, Biggie too. I kept hearing about kpop music blowing up a few years ago and gave them a chance because they were Koreans and didn’t know why they became so massive on all continents including North America.
I was shocked to find that they are not a typical boyband singing about superficial stuff. From their debut as teens (youngest member was 15 at debut) they were singing and rapping about political stuff and fucked up things about society that so many young people around the world could relate to. THIS is why they started developing a global fandom despite singing/rapping in Korean. They broke thru that language barrier because their messages were so powerful. They only have a handful of love songs among their 200+ song discography. and they’ve all been involved in writing and producing since their debut. They’ve done such a wide range of genres and that’s why they have fans of all ages and musical tastes. They’ve even made me like pop music 😂
I recommend reacting to their music video to N.O. with the english subtitles turned on. That’s what made me a fan.

I know you mean it's literally for fun fact. I have seen a lot of fans talking about the clan of them. Every time the clan was talked about, I saw the surprising reaction about their royalty(?) by I army. That's a bit awkward info for Koreans. So i wanted to correct the facts, but couldn't. because I didn't think it's that much important.
but it keeps spreading for years and can possible to misleading. So there are some things I'd like to correct.
      Can spread it.
In modern Korea, the meaning of a clan is almost non-existent. There isn't any privileges about clan nowdays.
Originally Clans only given for royal or relatives, so every clans begin from royalty. But now every korean got clans. Why?
      1. Can buy it.
Before the founding of the Republic of Korea, in late Joseon dynasty, the authority of traditional clans weakened and capitalists grew. It was a social trend for capitalists who had money but lacked a family power to buy for get in a clan list with money.
      2. The royal family and the major power families, as the times changed, were mostly sacrificed to the next power.
So, even in the same clan, only weak members in local area that are separated from palaces could continue to descend.
      3. Commoners also belonged to the clan.
As the class was liberated, even those who did not have a clan could have it, even servants could join the master's clan.
For these reasons, Gwangsan Kim clan is more difficult to find a relation with royals. Because it's from silla era royal in 9th century.(namjoon's gangneng Kim clan also), the 8th most largest clan in Korea.
So when Jin said on the show, "I am descended from royalty", koreans are just cracking up at that point. More than half of koreans might be related in royalty.
Please understand that my English may not be perfect. Thank u for reading my ted talk.

BTS harder tracks (mostly earlier) include: "UGH", "Mic Drop (Steve Aoki remix)", "Burning Up (Fire)". More Agust D tracks: "Burn it", "Agust D". Check out some other harder Korean "boy bands"--Stray Kids have some real bangers including: "District 9", "Victory Song", "Side Effects", "Double Knot", "Domino". Also try GOT7's track "Hard Carry"; NCT 127' "Cherry Bomb; EXO "Wolf". For Kpop females with harder edge--rapper Jessi "What type of X"; girl groups: f(x) "Red Light" and "Electric Shock"; aespa "Next Level"; Blackpink "Kill this Love".
I only recently discovered that kpop has a more hard driving aspect (never listened to it before I found that out), so those might not be the best examples, but I find they scratch my itch for harder edges. Context--my playlists include post hardcore punk (Big Black, X, the Clash, the Melvins), 90's stuff like Husker Du, Pixies, Nirvana, Sonic Youth, grew up listening to 70's and 80's hard rock/pop like Pink Floyd, Jimie Hendrix, Van Halen. I have pretty wide tastes and also love anything I can dance to, so the harder kpop's the best of both worlds for me. I just can't bear bland, syrupy, watered down, paint-by-the-numbers music, which a lot of kpop can be. (But not the tracks I listed).
Be warned most kpop bands, even the harder ones, like to contrast hard driving sections with melodic vocal sections and dance breaks. I like the contrast, it makes the harder sections hit harder, and the melodic sections give a bit of a rest so when it hits again, it gives you that shock all over again, sort of like double the rush. But I've heard some metalheads say they really dislike that tendency, feeling like it waters down the edge. Curious which side you might fall on.

I understand completely. I am the same, background in metal and 70s rock. When I became ARMY it was because of the writing and variation in styles. Just stunning musically if you look past the image that American media seems set on placing on them. True musicians.

The way I've learned to listen/watch BTS is watch a lyrics only video then watch the MV (though sometimes I still need an "explanation" video to catch the more subtle idioms and cultural differences). As you've learned already (Outro Tear) their live performances are usually the best.💜

Hi, I am back. Good reaction, ty. It's my fav Agust D song. Jimin ult bias, Suga wrecker, OT7. sell me u saw the MV to this! Don't forget to check out the behind the scenes. Suga is fighting with himself. We have the greedy king vs. the peasant. Did he kill himself and took control? Or Did he accept himself and is now more in control. The pill popper is talking about other Korean rappers. I suggest you check doolset lyrics. There are explanation vids. Suga learned the sword in 2 days for this. I was impressed. There is a video showing him learning the sword choreo. He is amazing. His ideas are really impressive in this. The way he uses breathing and different sounds in his rap I love it. Changing tones, smiling while singing or not just wow. Plus, he is smart and knows word play well. I would look up all info vids. I remember seeing somewhere that Bang PD worked for JYP I think. And he did not like how Kpop was back than. He wanted to do his own thing. He was a music producer & songwriter and he still is. He left the company and created his own. Here he could do what he wanted. Hugs. Stay safe. -NY USA 2019 Army💜 #YouareEnough

Oh yea I watched that too. Hope you keep getting blown away by BTS like the rest of the world did. Definitely check out “shadow”, Suga’s solo song if that’s the style of music you like. It’s hardcore psychology interpreted and presented in the most amazing artistic form, musically, lyrically, visually. The depth and the layers are beyond words. It’s so inspiring not just in terms of good music but it unlocks your subconscious. BTS teaches the fundamental human conditions at the deepest level with their most exciting and amazing performances period.

its not really a alter ego just a additional side to him like theyre not separate if that makes sense most assume like if he does rap music solo then bts is just pop but thats not the case bts also do a lot of rap heavy music along with many other genres. bts has 3 rappers who rap in bts songs but also all 3 have solo music like suga has agust d.
bts arent a pop group people assume that due to media calling them kpop but kpop isnt a genre but a industry the same as any other industry and they have artists, groups, bands etc who do specific genres or groups like bts who do all the genres lol
bts also write and produce so daechwita was written and produced by suga/agustd
daechwita is pronounced as day- ch- ita the w is silent. daechwita is a genre of traditional korean music meaning blowing and hitting it was music that was played when the military would be marching for the king. hes basically calling himself a king because really he and bts are kings theyre the most successful artists to ever come out of korea maybe even asian in general. and they started from the group they were all poor and their label was almost bankrupt so thats why he says born a slave now a king.
please react to daechwita explained by dkdktv he can do a way better job at explaining than i am plus add more korean context.
also please react to this is bts introduction by xceleste itll help you understand them in more detail. :)

Daechwita is a traditional Korean military music played usually while marching or when announcing the coming of royalty or important people. If you watch the MV, you will appreciate Korean cultural references. BTS music is usually never just about one song. It’s like a story that weaves through all of their songs. If you watch Introduction to BTS, it’s a good reference point of who they were when they started.
