just because someone is Chinese dosen't mean their mother tongue has to be Chinese. in fact no one group has absolute rights to a language since language is acquired through upbringing and the environment and it isn't a biological thing we are born with. The terms 1st language (L1), second language (L2) and so on are more appropriate in this case
A Chinese orphan could be adopted just after birth by Malay parents and raised as a Muslim, speak Malay, and follow Malay traditions and customs completely, and thus his L1 would be Malay instead ,and if he decides later on in life to another language (Chinese or otherwise) than that would be his L2,L3 and so on
the same could be said for the any group. take for example the United states,a nation built upon the efforts and labor of immigrants descended from Europeans. How many of them really speak the their supposed mother tongues? Or third generation of french born and raised Vietnamese ? What about Ukrainians assimilated into Russia during soviet times?

and lets not forget the good old notion that we are generally better at what we like to do. So for some learning a language could be easier (due to interest or a natural aptitude) than another form of academic pursuit and can speak more languages . That dosen't mean a person who cant should be judged, labelled and shamed for it.

TMTV, I like what you are doiing, is like a movement to improve mandarin standard. (Better than the "speak mandarin campaign" ! 👍👍 I'm the very fluent in mandarin kind by SG standard, can communicate with Taiwanese, Malaysian Chinese and PRC chinese etc (95%, but some words like face wash, "bathroom" they got different words in mainland and taiwanese mandarin etc). But your channel is doing a good job, maybe some day.... maybe some day you can make a list of these people who cannot speak mandarin fluent (actually i think the people here that you interviewed a number are the cannot even speak mandarin level, as good as a chinese speaking a few japanese words etc). Maybe some day if you can make a list of those people who want to learn mandarin maybe we can come out with something, I even know malaysian indian who can speak mandarin, maybe some day. We are our race we got to be proud of our own ethnic language not happily or proudly throw it away like many of the younger people here, that way we will end up with chinese who are "fake whites" (both guys and girls) who will happily white worship instead, end result becomes same like the asian americans, that's why they got so much "outmarriage" rates. 加油加油 TMTV, start your new movement, and good job your mandarin improved. 👍👍

华语or普通话as the Mainland Chinese calls it wasn't always the language of the Chinese people.
Languages you would deemed as dialects, are actually used for a much longer time before Mandarin came into the picture. These "dialects" have developed their own written forms, intonations, and are used in formal classes even.
Scholars have found that some of the 古诗 or old poems may have been written in Cantonese or 河洛话 by the original authors.

@Jacky Phantom Jacky Phantom Best to know 2 major languages. Additional third language is a bonus. Actually mandarin speakers alone got more than english speakers. (English is third after spanish)
      www.babbel.com/en/magazine/the-10-most-spoken-languages-in-the-world/#targetText=Numbers%20vary%20widely%20%E2%80%94%20Ethnologue%20puts,is%20the%20one%20for%20you.
But I think it depends on who you are also. I don't know who are you, if you are arab, south american etc then mandarin is definitely no use for you. But if you are Singaporean chinese, then will be a mistake not to learn it over time. Anglosphere map: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/English-speaking_world#/media/File:Countries_where_over_50%_of_the_population_are_native_English_speakers.png
      English-speaking extended map: upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/3/3e/Anglospeak.png/1280px-Anglospeak.png
Not really international. Spanish speaking map is also about the same i.pinimg.com/originals/fe/af/ac/feafaccf6bc247c1158f91427f1aa8ee.gif
French speaking map is also about the same:
      upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/6/6f/Proportion_of_French_speakers_by_country_in_2014_%280-50%25_gradation%29.svg/500px-Proportion_of_French_speakers_by_country_in_2014_%280-50%25_gradation%29.svg.png
So I don't think there's really a "international language" yet, although that is the story US is trying to put across. (Nothing wrong). But it's a fact that english is not "everything". If you are Singaporean, just step to neighbouring Batam etc. I think whole of Taiwan other than the capital don't speak english as well. Should be the same for Japan and South Korea etc. (Will learn that language first before I head over there next time). In our south of ASEAN actually I think Bahasa is also very major. In Malaysia, Brunei and Indonesia etc need that to survive (BM and Bahasa Indonesia is 20% different but more or less can communicate). A lot of people don't speak english in the world, but they are operating on "another part" of world and also different part of the internet so if you keep on accessing websites with english point of view or in our country like singapore you will have that illusion. Still an important language but not everything. In Taichung I saw before a super awkward moment one foreigner only english-speaking and the 7-eleven guy - only mandarin-speaking and they both keep talking in their own language, buying things, thanking etc, but both don't understand each other at all but still works. Funny moment.
The future should be a multilingual world.

    -
Try to translate with my poor English :-)
I can understand the reason why “了“ is pronounced as "liao" in Singaporean and Malaysian Mandarin.
"了" is pronounced as "liao" in local Beijing dialect in the beginning of the 20th century, just as "和" pronounced as "han" in Taiwan Mandarin.
Though quite a huge amount of Beijing local words and slangs are standardized in mainland Chinese mandarin, some other Beijing words are also standardized by Mandarin in Taiwan, Singapore, and Malaysia.

"English is important" is because only we are in Singapore. Different country got different "settings". If in Malaysia Bahasa Malaysia is most important, followed by Mandarin, then English etc. If in thailand then thai language first. Our Singapore happen to be the only one after WW2, "merdeka" but realised our majority is not the indigenous population so to be fair they didn't make mandarin the main language but stick with English, end up we become like a "fake western" country. We are not US, we are not UK, we are not Canada, Australia, we are also not even part of western europe. Just happens so. Same for India, they funny they didn't use hindi or any one of the indian language as the main. The south koreans, the japanese and the taiwanese doing a wonderful job keeping their language and heritage.

@Jacky Phantom If in Taiwan, English is pretty much useless. I'm like a translator between Taiwanese people and foreigners when I was there. In Malaysia, both english and mandarin are useful. Sometimes mandarin even more useful, (100% the chinese malaysians can understand), english to non-chinese malaysians maybe 25% chance they understand. In Indonesia both languages would be useless but the indonesian chinese will either know some bit of mandarin or english. I have also met 2 or 3 vietnamese who can speak mandarin, so for this region it is quite useful as well. On top of it, I speak zero japanese, but japanese texts or anything uses some of the same chinese words, so even if reading you can roughly guess what is the context e.g. (Now I'm also learning Japanese). Bonus points is I realised more and more mainland china people coming out of china as tourists (other than Singapore, the only PRC coming here mostly are from the least developed provinces coming to work. Except sometimes some PRC coming in here as tourists. [Clothing sense very different])

@@chia-haochou8102 le is a particle in Standard Mandarin which indicates perfective aspect e.g. zhidao-le 知道了 to have known or an interjective particle 明天是周六了; while liao is a verb, e.g. liaojie 了解 liaoran 了然. The particle 了 can be read as LIAO only in Peotic situation in Standard Mandarin.

@@aiweiliu1223 I also heard 了 is also pronounced 'Liao' in like Hokkien or something, which is the predominant dialect group in Singapore, and that may have influenced Singapore Mandarin. But I'm not native Singaporean and no one in Singapore really speaks other Chinese Varieties nowadays so idk.

Irfan Aditya no. I didnt say everybody should know English well. I mean they think their native language now is English and dont keep studing mother language - Chinese anymore. But the important is they even werent good at both of them. Their accent is even worse than the Shanghai-Chinese girl speaking. I feel sad for them so I wonder how Singaporeans will be in the future :(. English is my second language and chinese is the third one. I still keep improving Chinese because I love it❤ ❤

@@chaojiang6246 C'mon, some of them (including me) just understand that a language itself won't actually make someone proud, but the language we mastered back then somehow will help us survive a situation in future which make us proud. Did you get me? The "SURVIVAL" which make us proud. When I learn good English today, not the "English" itself will drive me to the "PROUD", but when I managed to settle something where involved high-level English, the "SUCCESS" of survive will make me proud of having English as my second language. Just like that.
