Fun times. In my late teens and 20's, I grew up with a burning desire to fish professionally. I was deep into tournament bass fishing in 1989. Life is short. My hats off to Ray Scott, Forrest Wood, and others who had a great impact on my life experiences.

The three classics on the James were the absolute best ones ever.

Retired before 40! I still believe he would have won more classics if he stuck around. But, he knew he had a big enough name to build his outdoor empire. That he did. Probably my favorite outdoor personality. He is just as good a hunter, was a close friend of dale Earnhardt also

I was a volunteer truck driver for this classic, and the next one in 1990, also on the James River. I drove for Clay Hood, a Federation angler from the west coast, and Steve Daniels the next year. About as close as I ever had a chance to be "in the show." Great fun.

Lived in Richmond and fished the James my whole life. You would believe the increase in the size of the Bass now.

Roland Martin, one of the best with 17 classics at this point in 1989. He has been pro for about 19 years and has b.a.s.s. Earnings of a little over 329 thousand. If you disregard the fact he has a tv show he is making a little over 17,000 dollars a year from fishing. Mind Blown... ouch.

The graphic from the broadcast says Denny Bauer is 40 (in 1989). He was actually 31. He’s currently 71 years old. Roland Martin is 80.

Amazing the increase in size of the bass today. 12 lbs wouldn’t even get you in the top thirty.

I wonder how much money hank made off those spinner baits? They hit the shelfs in 89, 90. I still got a couple in my tackle box. The skirts are long gone though. My buddy and i fished the heck out of them
