I’m 54….played blades most of my life. Had both hips replaced over the last 10 years so when I got back into golf, figured it was time for a GI club…got JPX 923 HMPs…played them for a year and hit it all over the face and couldn’t feel where I was striking it like I was used to, and had no control…tried T200s and same thing…thought maybe I lost my swing for good…then, tried the T100S irons and within 3 weeks, the swing was back! Now play a set of T150s and a set of MP221s, and have a set of Miura KM-700s on the way…I found it so hard to get a consistent strike without that feedback.
I had the same experience Im 68 about 3 years ago couldn’t hit my I500 anymore sold them got a new hip and after recovery got JPX hot metal Pro Senior flex HORRIBLE tried Srixon ZX5 Senior flex HORRIBLE turns out should have never sold I500 the hip was the problem not the clubs. Currently tried PING Blueprint S in stiff flex Graphite LOVED THEM getting ready to buy 7-PW because I use G425 hybrids above that
Focusing on strike completely changed my game. Went from a 15 hdcp at the start of 2019 to an 8 hdcp in the course of a single season. Great video!
Totally agree with this thinking... with more forgiving irons you know you can hit it all over the face and still get acceptable results, same swings on blades and it makes you want to put better swing on it next time to get better results. I love my Wilson Staff Model blades for that exact reason.
Great to hear, well done
They are a very nice club
Started playing at 11 years old with a set of Fred symth kingpin blades cut down for me by dad lol 😂
dead right making you a better player
Just ordered my set of blades. This year my cavity backs started going 20 yards further. So hoping these will get me from 11 down to single digits.
Yes, I learned to play in the early 80’s and that’s all we had were blades. The big new clubs always seemed weird to me.
Totally agree! It's like playing electric guitar, learn to play notes with a clean setting, cuz it brings out the mistakes instead of playing with a distorted setting that hides those bad habits😁
Couldn't agree more. My ball striking improved hugely when I played MP18 blades! Best clubs I've ever owned and regret selling to this day. Now practise with Srixon blades.
Have to agree with you as I changed to my psi tours a few years ago. Took some time to get used to them after using forgiving clubs. But after about 6 months I could see the difference on knowing my miss hits which I love about them. So helps in making you finding the middle of the bat after a well 😉👍🏾🙌🏾
Love this idea! I have been playing for about 4yrs and using TM M6 irons which are very forgiving and I had thought that they don’t really encourage me to improve as I don’t get punished. I had thought of buying a set of something nearer to a blade but hadn’t even considered just making it one bladed club. So may give this a go. I did the same with my driver, I was fit for a 12.5deg driver which I thought doesn’t encourage me to hit up, so I swapped to a 9deg one to make myself hit up on it and it has drastically improved my driving.
how you could been playing m6 irons 4 years if they were released in 2019?
Thanks very good, always played blades.
7 years ago I jumped on the light shaft strong loft thing and lost my scoring ability. Back to blades striking it good again;)
Exactly I’ve been playing blades for 2 years and I’ve improved more in the last two years than all my years playing golf simply because my clubs demanded I had a swing
Great video... similar to practice putting to a smaller hole (cup) add then the standard size cup looks huge afterwards!!
The whole point of difficult practice is to make actual play easier. 💡
Yes so glad you shared your thoughts on using an old set of second hand blades to improve your iron play when practicing. Seems like a video just on HOW TO PRACTICE at a range makes a lot of sense. We focus so much on equipment these days and tech. Banging away at your driver emptying a bucket of balls as fast as possible is NOT practicing. It's exercising :) We see that all day long at the golf course where I work !
I have a blade 5 iron that I practice with, and you’re right, it does make me more cognizant of my swing. It seems to make me concentrate more because if I strike that 5 iron poorly, it hurts.
Practice with blades, I don’t want to come back to more forgiving clubs as I feel numb striking one after another, feedback so wonderful with blades
Just dug out the Nicoll Royale stiff shafted 2 iron I was given in 1983 as a 15 year old when I started playing golf - that’ll focus the mind!
More people can play blades especially 6-PW.... it really improves your overall ball striking in my opinion and seriously a flushed shot feels sooooooo good.
❤️
I bought a super unforgiving iron set by mistake and I've been using it for driving just because I don't want to get my other cool ones dirty. But then I noticed I becomes better way faster than before. Big believer!
Ali, this is a great video and I am 💯 in agreement. I am 53 yrs old and have been a low handicap golfer all my life. I have a set of G425 irons and like you say, you get away with things with them. Last week, i fell out of love with them and pulled out my 2006 Mizuno MP32 irons and took them to the course. Within a few shots, my focus had returned and it was lovely to feel the buttery soft strikes once again with the mp32's, so much so, i have just kept them in the bag. Yes, they don't go as far as the G425 but they go a hell of a lot straighter and i found it more enjoyable to play. Now considering either to sell on my G425's or keep them for winter golf, and treat myself to a modern day set of forged Mizuno's again for the new season.
Would definitely try this. Great concept! Cheers 🍻
You can find old blades like from 80s in some local goodwills or Salvation Armys for super cheap. Great way to get a blade for practice for basically no money
I have an old Wilson Staff fluid feel 6 iron I use to practice with similar idea. Good stuff Ali.
Well explained! Thanks! I just upgraded from some senior flex Cobra clubs 2 Callaway’s Regular Flex, Apex DCB clubs! Boy what difference N my game. Every shot with my irons seems 2B more consistent! I was considering going with The Apex Pro for clubs AW-8 iron and Apex DCB 7-5. As U noted…. I am one of players that struggles with consistency while using my woods and hybrid . LOL!
Great video - and a good idea. Its something ive been doing for a while now and its great - i practice with a set of nike vr pro blades - and then switch over to some ping g700s - and its like using a tennis racket
After ten years of struggling with irons, finally picking up a club with loft on it has changed my delivery.
Very good idea, I would of never thought of it. I'm going to give it a try
I should maybe do that. I use players distance irons but they have quite alot of feedback for that type of iron
I bought 1981 titleist tour model forged irons for 50 bucks at a garage sale. You hve inspired me to learn to play them !
Thanks for that. It was very helpful.
Im a tennis player who has taken up golf in the past couple of years. I'm doing OK. (20 handicap) But here's the thing. This guy has got something here. I'm 60 now and have been playing tennis for 50 years to a high end club standard. But my eyes are not what they used to be and I found I was taking my eye off the ball. So, I wear a single contact lens in ny near sighted eye. (bear with me here). This means that I have to concentrate much harder and focus on watching the ball as it comes into my eyeliner with clarity far later. But when it does, I see ie crystal clear and can hit like I used to . So, in the same way when playing golf I use a Ben Sayers 5 iron Blade from the 1980s to practice on the range - and sometimes use it in places where I may use a 5 Calloway rogue or a 3 wood (I can't use rescue clubs) What this does is force me to concentrate that much harder or I will be totally unforgiven. It works... Most of the time. But I don't think I could use a set off blades in a round. Id be exhausted.
One of your best vids.Great content.Big thanks Ali...
It's the stinging sensation on mishits is what makes you focus on contact rather than make wild swings. Long irons are what put most players off blades I think as they are so hard to hit and look so intimidating to hit. Pure blades are a bit too much for me so I play a mix of 'players' forged irons (TM RSi-TP) for short to mid irons and substitute an old Callaway X-14 for my 4 iron plus a hybrid 3. All weak lofted compared to the crazy strong lofts you find in game improvement irons these days.
I struggled for years using oversized clubs. It was when I went to a smaller players iron, that I began to play better golf.
I struggle big time with big fat wedges. Just upgraded to blade wedges and has made a huge difference in my short game. I've lost distance in my approach shots and full swings are less consistent, but I feel the benefits with my short game overcome me struggling with approaches. I had so much confidence with my new wedges about 50 yards in where as before I had no idea what would happen
I agree, what you need is a mid hcap tester to prove the theory.
Thanks for this video I been beating myself up trying to figure out what went wrong nothing went wrong I got bladez . Now I can concentrate on contact without thinking I forgot how to play golf !
Such a good advice !👍👍
I recently transition to a set of older blades. But I did it methodically, I developed my swing to a point with perimeter weighted clubs until I more or less could hit the Center of the club face 95% of the time. Then I shifted to blades slowly with replacing my old clubs a one at a time starting with the wedges and working up. I still continue to use my perimeter weighted 3 and 4 because those are by far the least forgiving.
Ali, the iron video yesterday, was that about creating lag in the swing ? If so have you any opinion on the lag shot training aid. Appreciate any thoughts, thanks.
I’m a 16 handicap and I recently purchased a used set of Titleist 710mb irons for a great deal. I wanna improve my ball striking, so I’m gonna suffer this season. Lol My previous set is a set of old Callaway forged Razr clubs. My question is are old blades just as good as new current blades?? Do blades over the years get better? Was my purchase of old blades ok?
I just switched to a used set of iblades from G410. I strike the iblades so much purer. I don’t know what it is other than they are blue dot instead of black and the shafts are xstiff over stiff. I am more cognizant of my strike with the blades and therefore I hit them more consistently. I got no feed back from the 410’s. I actually hit the blades further too which is nuts. Everyone kept telling me to not use blades but I went from a 20+ handicap to a 10.
Just watched your video from last year ref blades v sgi irons and 100% agree 👍 you can get lazy with sgi's
I would rather my hishits be 20 yards short than 20 yards in the wooods. I find this to be true w blades. I totally agree w you. Best move I ever made was switching to blades. Ball striking improved as well as my ability to work the ball. If you’re a serious golfer you should own a set of blades to at least practice with.
I’ve been playing 2 years started with set of rocketbladez and hated them, loads of off set on them & sound clicky as hell and felt horrible! Got a set off a mate called tri star 💁♂️ Think they are blades tiny top line and nothing behind them but Forged they are amazing, feel so soft when out middle and sound is just fizzing of the ball. Think they have helped me playing a year with them although I have just wrapped the 6 round a tree
I agree 100% , I've played blades all my life. I bought some Mizuno JPX850 irons.
They are quality irons, but I really didn't like them. I went back to my Mizuno MP69's & I'm playing better golf again.
Blades will make you a better golfer.
When you first switch to blades and hit a few stingers you'll wonder why you bothered. However, if you can get yourself through that learning period you'll groove a better swing in the end. I learned in the early 1970s and that's all there was - we all managed!
I practice with blades, love them for feedback while practicing
That’s awesome, I wish I was good enough
@@SlicedBreadGolf I game T100s for competitions, it's only for practice purposes
@@neiltaylor1765 that’s awesome bro! Check my breaking par video, I just don’t think I have a good enough swing
Exactly!!
Fire as always boy
Thanks
What simulater configuration do you have?
Facts i had gis then p790s. All over the place with strikes. Got some apex pro 21s from w buddy took some practice but i hit them so much better. Small face small target. I had to really focus and could feel my mishits. Prob will never go back until i lose all my swing speed lol
I’ve just purchased a P7mb 7 iron to do exactly this. I’m new to the game.. playing 2 years with a used set of Ben Sayers clubs. Started lessons and really looking forward to becoming a better player
Great video, thanks. Makes good sense to practice with a more difficult club to hit. Any suggestions on decent used blades that won't break the bank?
Look up the top blade models of 2014 and you can find sets on eBay for like 300 bucks. I actually just bought mixing mp14s off eBay for 209 bucks and they’re a dream to play
I played some of my best golf with a set of jack Nicklaus murfields, some of the smallest irons I’ve ever seen.
Not much feedback from a game improvement iron, so for practice you can engrain bad habits.
In my humble opinion a blade is the best game improvement iron ever.
You are right. You won't play them when money or pride is on the line with your league but why the hell not get better so you can enjoy that awesome feeling when you pure it consistently!
Blades are the best player improvement clubs. You learn more about your swing from the feedback from a blade than anything. Try it. Stick with it.
I started with golf using blades from nike (yes I know, wanted to be like Tiger 😂). Looking great, feeled so good.... but the misshits.....! Sold them then to my golfpro and bought callaway irons..... what a difference! Almost I started a new Sport......😂 oh and bythe way my golfpro used them for 3 rounds a Go back to his tm (forgiving) irons. His comment: I dont want to make Golf harder for me as neccessary....😂😂😂
And what you say makes a lot of sence to me ..... practise with blades....
So cool
Exactly Mike
Ive only been playing golf for a year. I play PXG 0211 blades. They are absolutely beautiful and the thin sole helps me get out of a nasty rough if needed. A little over 600 for 6 clubs is a steel for a triple forged blade. I can fade it and draw it and they are very forgiving for a blade. I played with my buddy last week who's been playing golf for 15 years . Needless to say my 3rd shot on the 1st hole par 5 landed 6 inches from the pin. Tap in birdie . I love my blades
but practice helps too!!!. Goodluck everyone. Everyone tells me I should be playing a more forgiving iron seeing as though I've only been playing for a year. But when I hit shots like that they have nothing to say.
Thats why I just bought a Takomo 301MB/301cavity back combo set, let's see how it works out.
Hi Eric how are you going with them? Love to hear your thoughts
@@lukewoods5124 too soon to say much, only at the range so far. They feel great, but they are lofted more like pro clubs, I have to move one club up for all the shots.
I feel they are a big improvement for my game, when I get used to them.
@@MrCzto that's awesome 😊thanks it's hard to know much with so many other reviews too.
What's your handicap
@@lukewoods5124 I started to play 2 years ago, I have a 21 now
@@MrCzto good job! as soon as I stated properly practicing and with harder clubs I dropped from 22-12 playing one year, I reckon you are right these clubs could really help you in the long run.
I agree. I often practice with Hogan blades and play a round with my Pings.
I was allways super disappointed when every website recommended me to get these ugly clubs with really big soles and giant faces. I never wanted to get new Irons because i didn't like the look of the ones recomended for my handicap (30). A week ago i bit the bullet and just got myself some players cavity backs (Cobra King Tour MIM) and i love them. Looking at them gives me confidence, the smaller club face makes me hit them more in the sweet spot and they feel great.
Never let someone tell you that your handicap tells you what clubs to buy. Try them and play them if you like them.
Ali I play off 5 and played blades in my younger days but now I'm 50 and have gamed players distance irons for the last six years and would never entertain blades ever again. Yes they feel buttery and reward centre strikes but even pros don't hit centre all the time so we have no chance let's face it. They just don't give you the forgiveness of cavity irons and any one who says they don't lose big distance on bad strikes with blades are talking utter garbage.
Maybe just play with them I just ordered a set of p7mbs because I am sick of the fliers I have only been playing a year and a half and I feel these game improvement irons are not good for anyones game as soon as you start striking the ball better than you need new irons this will be my third se this year 921 jxp hmp 7 i any where from 185 to 230 p770 7i 185 to 215 I just ordered the mbs and I am hoping I can get some good gapping
Mizuno MP-32s all day!
What do you practice with to improve your blades?
A broom stick
Don’t you need speed to take advantage of the bladed club head design? Most of us realistically don’t have enough
Not sure tbh... just need to be hitting center
Honestly if you want to get good just buy old blades they least forgiving as fuck lol but I practice with 2,4,7 old blade irons when I practice on strike it helps
Most people will play better golf shots if they play & practice with blades. Power bats make you lazy about strike.
Or just use footspray or impact tape.
Lol very true and cheaper
Exactly you can, just pick up an old blade 7 iron or something to practice with
@@SlicedBreadGolf I don’t think it is cheaper on the long run can get a blade 7 iron demo for £20
The idea is to just go find one or two second hand old pure blade irons and use them as practice tools on the range NOT but I would never use them on the course! Never when playing with your buddies or for $$$ LOL
@@JohnnyDSR I know the idea. I’m offering a more practical one. Getting spray or impact tape allows you to continue using the same club you’re already using. You still get the same benefit as you can see where the strike is with the club you already have. Simply using a blade isn’t going to make you strike it better. Sure, maybe you can feel the strike more easily, but probably not if you’re using a forged cavity back. You’re not going to magically get better by using that club. You have to make a change. Why not just use tape or spray and directly measure your strike, all the while using the same club you already have. For me, I use my foresight launch monitor and quantify my strikes with ball speed.
Ahhh the reverb in my hands on poor contact shots, loss of ball speed, and number of shots coming up ten yards short of my normal distances for rather minimal gains to spin on well hit balls says otherwise, mate! Lol. Im 30 and played a set of blades for the first time ever this year... I think playing them has helped my swing fundamentals on iron shots, but have not helped my scores in the least! I find myself having to use much more wrist rotation through my shot than I used to and on my low irons it completely eliminated "sweeping" the ball as an option! Basically if you commit to playing blades you are committing to fundamentally more sound golf w much less room for error. I dont think this is a good idea for most golfers TBH.
Interesting. I played a muscle cavity (Miura 501) for about 7-8 years before moving to MB716 blades 6-PW (CB5i) for a few years. Played great with them. Yes distance is not the same but more accuracy and tighter dispersion. More recently moved to MP20-HMB and they go 10-12 yards further. But I found my scoring average fell away. Might be because I spent half a season overshooting greens and putting poorly! Now I’m moving back to MP20 blades and will blend them into the HMB’s. Expect a Detailed gapping session should determine where the blade cutoff lands 6/7/8i and any loft bending that might need to be done to close gaps.
@@seancook2264 yeah, I would probably prefer a mixed set as well. Im going to play them again this year cuz they were expensive and now its a challenge. Lol. However, it could be that my flaws in my golf swing are somewhat tailor-made (no pun intended) to be bad for blade irons. Example... I constantly take my approach slightly too far away from the ball (its a comfort thing) which lends its self to shots struck too much off of the toe which will be punished by weaker strike and yardage more so than off of the heal... which slightly toe is often my most common miss. Cavity or MBs were probably saving quite a bit of my iron distance for some time before I switched. Lol
I agree playing but could be great to practice with
@@AliTaylorGolf yeah, much more instant feedback on your strike that is for sure.
Understand where your going with this but blades don't have a lot of offset where as game improvement irons do. Aren't swings going to be different to compensate (wrist, rotation, etc.) for the offset therefore not really help the high handicap golfer?
Just talking about improving strike
I still don't understand the physics of why anyone, no matter how good they are, would play a blade? What do you LOSE by playing a game improvement iron?? NOTHING! You might hit it too far... I can get that. But I think it's more an aesthetics thing.. "Look how cool I am!... I play a bade!".... If you hit it perfect with a blade, you'll hit it perfect with an easier to play club. Why not play a ball that doesn't go very far just to prove how cool you are?
I don't disagree but sometimes practicing with a blade makes you improve strike.
Because people with good ball striking can put more spin and can have more control of their ball flight
You literally answered your own question… “if you hit it perfect with a blade, you’ll hit it perfect with an easier to hit club”.. Simple as that. I don’t think there’s any “ego” attached to it, it’s just another method to help improve ball striking. Nothing more, nothing less. I think his whole thing is to let go of the mystique of a blade and to use it to your advantage. He’s not telling everyone to go buy blades and play them exclusively?
I use blades because I like the look the feel and manoeuvrability of them. I also use the big shovels on the goat track rocky courses.
hitting blades on a perfect mat...... get out in the world and show us. boring
Do you not want to hit ball first whatever the lie?
Great video.. this is so true..I thought the exact same things and switch to some 690mb blades. Aim small miss small... and club up baby..
Not for everybody but I think it can be useful
