  • Can A BEGINNER Golfer Use Blades? In this video my mid handicap new golfer foxy puts the Mizuno MP20 MB BLADE Irons to the test against a more forgiving alternative. Should a mid handicap use blades? who should use blades? Can a mid handicap use blades? can a beginner golfer use blades? Who should use blades? Should you use blades? In this video you might find out! Which will go further? Will the blade be as forgiving as the forgiving golf clubs? Will foxy quit golf forever after hitting blades??? Let’s find out. And lets do it now!

      I agree!
      For some people it's all about the experience. They are willing to give up a few strokes here and there for the experience of a well struck shot with a forged blade. Plus many of us value the feedback of such clubs.
      For others it's all about shooting the lowest score possible. That requires a relentless pursuit of the right equipment to maximize your game! (along with tons of practice!)
      Both are perfectly acceptable ways to approach the game.

    I think it depends entirely on the person. 7 months after I started playing, a friend of mine gave me a set of 1978 wilson staff tour blades, 2-SW and I had two range sessions and played several rounds with them and played them better than my Taylormade rsi 1s. For me from the start, off set and large head size puts me off, it makes me feel like I am going to chunk them. The tour blades made me feel I can get through the ball. After that, I got a set of wilson Fg tour F5s and now I have the V6 irons. Again, I think it depends on the person. Beginners back in the day started with blades, I think beginners should, it makes you concentrate on the club face and hitting the center. GI irons makes you feel you can swing as hard and wild as you want and the ball will still get there. Just my opinion. Great video James.

    When I was a junior junior (lates 1980s) my first set as an 8 year old were Dunlop blades. Although I got better as I got older and played with Slaz XTCs, when I hit a reasonable standard (18 hcp at about 15) I switched to some (old at the time) Golden Ram blades. Coming back into golf after 12-15 years I bought a set of 'improvement' irons but found them too big. I'm now back on the (35 year old?) blades and am heading back into the teens. Blades make you hit the middle of the club face, and feel amazing. No reason you should not learn with them - do it right the first time.

      Exactly. Irons were just irons. You bought a set of blades because that's all there was and you learned how to hit them properly. Ironically, they are the ultimate game improvement clubs, they force you to get better. The whole point is to hit the sweet spot and blades give ultimate feedback. I guess it's not in the equipment industry's interest to have players investing in a set of blades and using them for multiple seasons until they need replacing. It's better to have them chase the latest and greatest and the narrative becomes that you need all the forgiveness you can get while the benefits of blades get lost and become defined as exclusively for low handicap players. Blades are very user friendly once you know what you're doing (or at least trying to do).

If the person is really dedicated and serious about being a student of the game, I would say they SHOULD use blades (and I didn't...but am now looking for a set). The reason being is that the direct feedback and smaller clubhead will force you to become a better ball striker. If you are just going to be a casual player with the guys a few times a year, then I would say get the most forgiving clubs you can get so you can at least have a good time while you are out there instead of hating the game. Lots of practice and dedication to the game...blades. Going from the sofa to Pebble Beach...Super Game-Improvement Irons...FOR SURE!

    I think blades helped my golf game. I started with game improvement irons and they were like swinging a flip flop on a golf shaft and gave almost no feedback. It was only after I moved to player cavity backs then onto blades that my handicap fell 7.5 strokes to 10. The blades reward good strikes and punish bad strikes which caused me to practice and work out swing problems while the game improvement irons were dead feeling. I had to spray the face of them to tell where I hit but I know instantly with my Ft Worth blades exactly where on the face I hit. So, I would say if you don't care enough about your game to practice and don't really care about your score then game improvement irons are the way to go but if you work at your game and want to cut strokes then get a more responsive set of clubs.

I just got him a single blade: Titleist 7-iron MB Forged. The idea being that when he practices with this blade he will get very punishing feedback if he’s not hitting the dime sized sweet spot. I believe this will help improve his concentration on ball striking consistency. But as to going to pure blades, I don’t see the benefit now-a-days. Perhaps a semi-blade for the feedback but also for the forgiveness and game improvement.

    I wouldn’t advise a beginner to use blades but once they has found a consistent swing then why not, some people can be great iron players and not very good wood players

    How would the MP20 Blades compare to the MP60? I am off 16 and still use my MP60, I bought in 2008, but had a break from golf for 6 years. No restarted and still like my MP60, but those MP20 look so sexy. I am asking myself, if they would be an option. The HMB seem to look a bit chunky compared to my MP60, but have not seen them in nature. Maybe it's not too bad. So will the MP20 Blades be harder to play than the MP60?

    I’d consider myself a beginner. I started really playing last year. I played here and there when my dad would take me out when I was younger, but I didn’t know what I was doing. If you can strike your irons well, switch to blades. I started with cobra f-max irons and switched to blades this year. Man what a difference. You really can feel what you’ve done wrong. I think “game improvement irons” do the exact opposite in the long run. Blades are best

    I didn't know the difference when I started but I think people spread fear by saying blades are hard to hit. I went to my first lesson with Wilson FG-17 irons someone gave me and the PGA Pro never said: "you can't start with blades". Use whatever club you like the gives the feedback you need to see and feel. It really gets down to someone's work ethic and how much they play.

    I am a 18 handicap and one of the biggest issues is approach shots with my irons. I played a set of cavity back g25s and sometimes I'd absolutely demolish my 8 and it will go 170 instead of the 150 I average and roll it over the green. By no means should I play blades but since recently switching over my distances are more consistent. I enjoy playing my 714 MBs, I got them for cheap and enjoy the feel.

    James you hit the nail on the head..if you make a horrible swing and resultant contact is just as terrible, I am not aware of a club head that can correct those issues. I am speaking from experience, I have rented game improvement clubs on vacation, and made lazy, horrible passes at the ball to only have the ball nestle 1” from the cup...oops that was a actual dream I was having about a vacation, where I was playing golf..my bad🤣 I started playing golf with Hogan Blades, and learned how to make perfect contact, the majority of the time. That’s why I can step away from the game as I get older, and my back dictates how long, I can step back in and pick up from where I left off, with a bucket of balls practice. I know pros these days are teaching newer players like they are the snowflake generation, and for the most part they are, however they should do what the greatest older pros did. Hand the new golfer a bag of blades, no driver, no putter, no fairway metals...go hit a bucket, and play 18...rinse and repeat everyday, or other day. The biggest problem with this new clubs today is that you can put a marginal swing, and average contact, and the ball will get airborne, and down range..the issue is if you hit like that a 1000 to 5000 times, you will spend a lifetime trying to fix the learned muscle memory of those swing flaws. You take a blade to the range on a crisp morning m make a shitty swing, your fingers go a little numb, your hind teeth rattle, and the ball dribbles 30 yards in front of you...guess what you will not do? Make that swing 1000 to 5000 times!!! You will however hit one perfectly, and remember that feeling, boom you are becoming a golfer

    How i think about Bladed Irons? I never Played Blades. Im a beginner (-54) and i use razr x irons and before them i used taylormade burner irons. to be honest: when i changed from the "fatty-" looking burner irons to the razr x, i had problems to launch the ball high enough.
    the "help" that some irons give, they work good. when i would go back in time and made the same process with ""bladed irons", i think i would not have the same results like with "helping irons".

    It’s hard to imagine how one can hit big clubs in the middle of the club face with the ball being so low on the ground. Also they don’t inspire confidence that they will cut through the ground, they look like they would bounce. Blades for beginners is the way to go, forget all the nonsense propaganda.

    I started a year and a half ago with some apex cf16s which I belive are more of a game improvement club. However today I found a 2-9 Wilson staff set in the club house that had been laying in there. Took them out and had a few mis hits to start and realized how punishing they were. Before long, I was forced to make good contact or be punished unmercifully. The 7 iron in that set is a 37 while my apexs are a 31. I was losing yardage but was hitting them straight and they flew crisp like I had more control. I'm going to keep them in the bag for a few months then maybe get a newer set of blades if I like them enough.

    Touched a golf club for the 1st time at age 40. I'm 68 now. 15 handicap. If I rip a driver it goes 220 yards. Play 3X / week. Love the game even though I suck. Current set is Mizuno JPX EZ. Forgiving enough. A few years ago I bought a set of some old Titleist MB blades with stiff shafts. I was awful with them. An off center ball strike would punish my hands. Felt like I was electrocuted. I'm adverse to try blades again. If I found a good quality set at a garage sale for $50 I might try again, but just for a laugh and hope to sell them for a profit on eBay.

    Blades are great. They can humble any level of golfer very quickly but no better feel with the perfect shot. Everyone should give them an honest try. I use a set of Fourteen FH-1000 and love them. Do not get the distance as a Cavity back but I think they make me a better golfer in the long run. I have to take more time on the set up and all the pre-shot rituals because they let you know if you make a bad swing. So for that reason beginners should use these

  • @hollywood_golf
    @hollywood_golf Před 4 lety

    I agree with several folks here....strike is everything. If you hit the middle of the club face every time you can use Fred Flintstone's clubs and hit a good shot. That being said, most beginners cannot consistently hit the center so hence more bad shots. Nothing beats a great strike with a blade and distance is so consistent.

    Learning golf is an exercise in patience and madness. Everyone learned the game with blades before cavity backs came on the scene. IMO if you want to get proficient, start with the most unforgiving clubs you can find and work out your mechanics, don't be aided by equipment because you are the machine, not the club. You can't buy skill despite what the marketing departments want you so desperately to believe. Get some cheap old school irons and swing them until you love yourself.

  • @TheFurnitureArtisan
    @TheFurnitureArtisan Před 4 lety

    👍 the obvious answer is Yes, beginners can use blades. I think it boils down to what you started with. If you have never hit anything else and learnt to hit consistently with a particular type of club it becomes almost irrelevant as to what type of club it is. As a players game progresses they can then start to think of improving their weaker areas with different types, maybe a more forgiving long iron or hybrids etc.
    Personally I started playing with a set of blades and stuck with bladed clubs ever since, however I now have a couple of hybrids at the top end of the irons. I’m convinced that playing with blades at the bottom end, maybe wedges to 7 or maybe 6iron will benefit most players in the long term when they reach a lower handicap. In my opinion, the feel and finesse i get from a blade coupled with the workability to create shots has been a bigger contributor to getting low than the ability to tonk it 300+yards.

    They will make a ball striker out of you ....plus I think you will concentrate more and the feedback will be more helpful ....but I play mp5s and have for over a year now always played forged cavities but once I put the zunos in my bag well I just can't see changing them out unless I got another newer set of Mizuno blades or the Wilson staff blades they are super sexy as well ....biggest thing I found was dispersion was much tighter ....yeah you mis you lose yardage but you won't fly any greens once you learn your yardage with each club ....I think it could only help to start with a set .....it's the end goal anyways isn't it .....everyone really wants a shiny sexy blade in the bag
