    Brilliant! "Learn less, paint more." This is a challenge for writers, too. Learn less, write more. Have to paint, write, play, perform, etc. Yes, yes, a thousand times, yes.

    Thank you for all this information. The one thing I did learn in the beginning, and led to me understanding color theory, was to throw away or don't buy tubes of black or gray paint. Learning to mix your blacks, and shadows specific to the surface upon which the shadow is cast ,will make your paintings come alive.
    The other thing I wished I could beat into the heads of my students was 'don't even tell me that such and such a teacher told you NEVER to do . . . . . (fill in the blank)' and yes - that includes throw away your black paint. Turns out that black and yellow make a very exciting green😆🙃The final thing I never seemed to disabuse students of was 'but that's the way it looks in the photo'. Fine. But it absolutely doesn't work in a painting. Or the camera lens distorted what you're seeing and those aren't the correct proportions/angles, etc.

    Again thank you very much for the video Irit. After watching it throughly, I thought I should share and hopefully help as well. I am very new at this but I dive deep at whatever I do since I am quite obsessive so here are my two cents:
    - Not at first maybe but try using cotton paper as earlier as possible (arches, fabriano artistico, hahnemuhle collection, cezanne, leornardo are good examples). I know they are expensive, believe me I know. But then again, it makes a HUGE difference, it’s THE game-changer for most. Go with whatever is most available and affordable for you. Remember paper is the most important element of watercolor. Then go with paint and brushes. And no, you DO NOT need to spend fortune on expensive brushes just get those special ones suitable for what you’re into. Landscape; get a mop. Florals; get some daggers. Miniature paintings; get micros.
    - I definitely agree on interchangeable sets, I keep changing my pigments and I am sure I will do it forever. You change, your tastes change. You should go with the flow, experiment, and try new things.
    - Learn your pigments, how they behave and how they will mix but try them on cheaper alternatives (like white nights) then move to better brands (like schmincke or daniel smith). If you’re a beginner you will want to try every pigment possible, so do that with cheaper but quality brands and experiment. I would never recommend student grade paints, in my opinion white nights would be the lowest you should go. Then move up to better brands by buying either an ultimate mixing stable limited set or their specialty colors. Before buying anything make sure to watch couple of reviews about it in here and check swatches on Jane Blundell’s blog.
    - You actually need only four main colors; a yellow, red, and blue, plus an earth tone (ie. burnt sienna or umber). That’s it. But if you’re a beginner you’d want more and it’s okay to want more just don’t spend a fortune to get every new thing you see cause you will certainly regret it and not going to use it all. Also this is why experimentation is so vital. For example I like cool colors, blues, greens, and earth tones while my sister loves bright pinks, purples, and pastels. I do not use pinks, purples or any pastels on my palette so I ended up giving them away. But I adore schmincke’s supergranulation colors and got them all, it’s all your choice but at least give yourself time to know yourself and learn what you like.
    - I don’t think that you need to take classes or buy books. Watercolor community here in youtube is amazing and you will learn everything you could possibly learn in here just watching couple of videos and trying them on your own. Courses take time, it might be my style of learning but in my experience searching for things that interest me on my own, doing the work, and trying it on my own gives me great benefit. I could not imagine myself being patient and learn from scratch, and I feel like in this case you should really just go for it. You might also be overwhelmed by the amount of classes and techniques, just be alone with your paper, brush, and paint & do your thing for awhile and see how it goes. Then build up. There are no rules. Forget the rules. Let it go. Watercolor is letting go. Just like Irit said: listen, understand why someone is doing something and try to do it your way and see what happens. “Watch less do more, learn less paint more”.
    - Lastly, I agree with Irit on a watercolor journal as well. I have a little notebook that I could swatch new sets and colors, mix some, practice some leaves and trees etc. rather than just painting stuff to random sheets everywhere. It keeps things nice and tidy, helps me control my perfectionism cause nothing in that notebook is even close to perfect or even good. I can see how I improved and remember the process how I got there. I use Fabriano Venezia book 10x15cm 200gsm. It’s not a good paper but it works.
    Hope these help. Like Irit said; don’t listen to the noise, do what you love. Always do it your own way & happy painting 🦦
    Edit: cause I misspelled Irit’s name three times too many…🙈

    That one tip changed everything for me and seems so obvious, if you don’t like a colour you don’t have to use it , when you said that in a video I just happened to watch a year ago it all clicked into place ! I dislike primary colours 🙈 now my palette is full of muted tones or colours I can mix into primary colours to dull them down . Never again will lemon yellow feature in a palette 🤣🤣🤣🤣

    • @iritlandgraf
      @iritlandgraf  Před 2 lety +2

      NEVER AGAIN to lemon yellow from me too!! Your palette sounds glorious!

    • @OhJodi69
      @OhJodi69 Před 2 lety +2

      Yes. Do you mix your colors "backwards" like I do? Like, instead of trying to mix a maroon or dark green from the "basic" colors, I now START with a purchased maroon or dark green, and then add a bit of the primaries, earths, or neutrals, to refine the color. The "rule" to only buy single pigments, and certainly not more than two, only frustrated me. So now I just buy what colors I like (and I certainly have PLENTY of basic colors already).

    • @askialuna7717
      @askialuna7717 Před 2 lety +1

      I don't like lemon yellow either, for me the colour doesn't make much sense in my palette. So lemon yellow doesn't get a photo from me. 🤣
      I've also found out that it's difficult for me to paint only with primary colours, a little more of one colour mixed with the other
      and the colour tone changes a lot and usually overshoots the mark and I have to work against it again with the other colour. 🙄
      Most of the time I also have to mix in some third colour so that it is not too intense for me.
      It is possible to mix a lot of colours, but that also means that the amount of paint that can be mixed in to get a certain colour is a very fine area of amounts.
      For me, it feels like making something in a laboratory where I have to add something microgram wise until it is right. 🧑‍🔬
      The primary colours are typically more expensive than earth colours, and I'm also too frugal to mix earth tones from primary colours and waste the more expensive colours for them.💰

      @parthsavyasachi9348 Před 2 lety +1

      I was forced out of lemon yellow because my wife hated it and told me that no yellows in the painting.
      I created a substitute for it by using jaune brilliant 2 plus touch of crimson lake or some red.
      By using different reds one can get variety of yellow substitutes.

    Some pigments that Van fairy in actual colour
    PBr7 ( burnt umber, raw umber, mars violet, burnt sienna, raw sienna, etc.)
    PV19 ( Quinacridone rose, quinacridone red, quinacridone violet, etc.)
    PR 101 (Venetian red, iron oxide, Indian red, Terra Rosa, burnt sienna, etc.)
    Those are the main 3. And yes the same name ‘burnt Sienna’ can be different browns and use different pigments! It can be more orange or more med brown. Can be single pigment PR 101 or PBR 7 or multi pigment mixes such as PR 101/PBk 11. I think there is a full art grade one with a 4 pigment mix! For some reason. So checking the pigment information is very valuable but also looking at the colour itself.

    I just want to say that I really appreciate the wisdom shared in your ten (20!) tips of the last two videos. Would that I’d known all of that! I read through the attached info regarding learning platforms and thought I’d share one that some of your viewers might enjoy.
    Shelley Prior ( on CZcams) offers a weekly free ‘real time’ watercolor painting class- each session is about 1.5 hours. The subject matter is very different from one week to the next…icicles, chocolates and foil, landscapes etc. The lessons are added to the playlist to view afterwards. They are free. Like Angela Fehr, Jean Haines and others, she also offers other pay for view classes if you enjoy the teaching style in the free ones. What is particularly notable is that there is no hype…a good basic palette of paint, a smallish collection of good brushes and 100% cotton paper.

I was beginning to think I was confusing myself by not sticking to one style. I’ve been painting a little over a year and feel kind of discouraged. I still can’t get onboard with the paper thing.... I just can’t bring myself to spend $100-$300 on those Arches paper pads, I won’t do it, lol (it’s super expensive in New Zealand)... I’ll just keep buying the $10-$40 ones and I know I might be missing out, but I’m not a real artist haha, and I just don’t see the value in spending that much on **gasp** paper! I mean, I’m happy to spend heaps on art supplies, $2k on iPad, $100 on paints... $400 on markers (I have 40 Copics but refuse to buy the full set which would cost $3.5k-$5k so I went with Spectrum Noir for $450... ugh or full set Polychromos which are $800-$1000 for full set in Nz but only $300 in Aussie, I don’t understand!), etc... i’m not “cheap” as such, I just don’t see the same value in paper, lol, and I find I’m getting more stubborn about it the more they tell us newbies to buy it, I hate being told what I “have” to do... and I know that’s not logical either 😂

      There are lots of cheap 100% cotton papers other than Arches. I bought the big rolls for $200 each and cut them up, it's 10 yards...might last me forever. I have 3 rolls, don't worry about it anymore.

      Arches hot pressed for example is wonderful albeit expensive paper.

    I know a very good teacher and masterartist who does recommend colours. but although he can be very strict, when he teaches beginners, even his list is entiteld like this 'sensible minimum pallette and reasonable additions'. and it is clear, that he is teaching landscapes. but I am sure, deep inside, he is convinced, ultramarine, burnt sienna and raw sienna are must haves :-). for the two colours raw sienna and burnt sienna he noted that there is no replacement for these two colours. and I think, that is right. so I guess, maybe these two are kind of must have :-) esp. if one does mix colours and not only use exclusivled the colours as they re pre-mixed. I guess, there are people who do it like that. esp. when it is about quick painting and certain abstracts. that might be. but that is rare

    • @iritlandgraf
      @iritlandgraf  Před 2 lety +1

      Lol maybe one could argue if you want to paint somewhat realistic landscapes you need earth tones, so they are essential but there are many pigments one can use and many ways to mix neutrals from brighter colors. So I would say there is not a single color that is a must have 😉For beginners it is definitely helpful to have clear instructions.

    • @nursen2106
      @nursen2106 Před 2 lety

      @@iritlandgraf even if e.g. sienna (burnt and raw) is no must have, I think, he was right, labeling it as non replaceable. because - apart from using only pre-mixed colours, it is the ultimate colour to mix lively greys (sienna burnt). and that is true in land- sea, -city scapes and also with florals - depending on the subject of course. because I did try variations and pre-mixes of grey variation. but it is the best colour you can have on hand and mix it with ultramarine in all shades and intensities you want. it even works better than paynes grey (although a nice colour on it's own). and it is easy. that I would still call non-replacable. none other can do that so well and so easy. a german femal artist who also teaches and has a youtube channel once made a video on braking down mixing using only 3 primaries. you know those kind of demonstrations for sure. what was really funny was, how hard it was even for her, a hard core pro, to mix a good grey. and in the comment section I mentioned, how a then newly had discovered how effortless ultramarine blue and burnt sienna work. she then said, that is the ultimate mix :-).
      but going back to the word realistic. I often see sort or realistic landscapes and such, but very loosely painted. I rather call them naturalistic. realistic for me is that category, that really want's to look like a foto. there are artists, who can do that. either like fotos or like a slightly photoshoped picture. when you say realistic here in that comment, which one do you mean? do you include those, that are painted in a loose and edited style? just asking, because you stated, that maybe a certain tone would be needed to be realistic, and I wanted to understand, how that is meant. I find, loose paintings not that easy. and having the opportunity to mix up shades quickly is something that helps with loose paintings. that is why I find colours, that make mixing an easy task so much more helpful. I realized e.g. for abstracts solid ready mixed colour out of the tube or pan are better. but again, from a beginners perspective of course :-)

    The Khadi book mentioned is the Log Book, the fat book is terrible - It seems great, it _would_ be great, if the sizing in the paper worked.
    The paper in the log book doesn't do colours justice, and yet.. It's kind of, nice? It's nice to not have to care at all about the paper at least. ☺️

      hannah~ you've used the log book? can you help me understand how it's bad yet good? how is the sizing on the paper? can you paint on both sides? i have the khadi 150gsm 15x15cm and like that a lot but hesitant to get the log book since Irit keeps saying the paper is horrible. 😅

    • @hannahthufvesson
      @hannahthufvesson Před 2 lety

      @@PaintinHidingYes, I have and I can try ☺️ First, the 150gsm 15x15 cm books are really nice! In my opinion they're great little sketchbooks! The paper in those is actually pleasant, although they don't do super well with multiple layers and granulating paints, in my opinion (just in case anyone else reading wants to know the difference). In comparison the Log Book is a terrible sketch book. It's not for making paintings, but if you want to quickly sketch out an idea or try out a color mix before using it in a painting or something like that, it's nice to have on hand. The paper is very thin, while you can use both sides, I kind of want to reiterate that it's not a book to Paint in. Imagine regular printing paper, although it takes water better! The sizing works well for that (unlike the Fat Books which gets blotchy), but it won't make for a nice picture if you paint in it. I wouldn't even recommend using it for swatches since it really doesn't do them justice, as far as my experience goes. Does this help or did I leave something important out? 🙂

    • @iritlandgraf
      @iritlandgraf  Před 2 lety +2

      Lol its like newspaper paper. I like it because it doesn't fall apart when wet like copy paper would, and it's thin so that book has tons of pages I can fill with blobs and not worry about wasting paper. The paint might not look exactly like it would on nice paper but the colors still retain their vibrancy and so for me personally, for the purpose of swatching and mixing colors, it is sufficient. Hope that helps!
