omg your hoodie looks so soft and cozy! i want! 😆 mijello's cobalt turquoise has actually been only PB28 for a long time now. they have a total of 126 colours last i checked. i understand how u feel though with all the multi-pigment colours. i love mijello because it's rather affordable where i am here in Thailand but in all honestly, that's because i only look at the single pigment colours and the staples like the ones in the pure pigment set. i understand it's not readily available open stock in many countries. as someone who has tried their whole range (dot chart) and have some tubes myself, i really recommend their single pigment colours. i'm able to get them (15ml tubes) open stock here for around 3.00 EUR series A .... and series E for 6.40 EUR. that said, i agree with everything u said about the brand, their multi-pigment colours aren't that enticing and definitely isn't their selling point imo. Rembrandt is also another brand quite available and affordable here only when they go on sale though. what's sad is that the local company here hasn't imported their full range yet (still missing the spark colours and what not).

Thanks for sharing! I think if Mijello is available to you and affordable, and you know what you're buying, then it's a win win!

I love Mijello mission gold colours ! They are my favourite !
First they do have single pigments : 46 (yes I counted them X) ). And they have 3 Single pigment purples (including cobalt violet ) but also a single pigment cobalt turquoise (pb28).
What I love about them :
Their intensity, saturation and transparency. They are a joy to reset and are extremely pigmented. That pigmentation and intensity for that price is unparalled to me (even white night are not as good a deal imo). I also love some of their multi pigment browns which are transparent, intense, saturated and more importantly for me non granulating. Which I have a lot of trouble getting in other brands. I don't mind having some multi pigment because I know how to work with them and I usually only do mixes of analogous colours. Personally never got muddy colours with them.
I have to admit their naming is confusing (like their phtalo blue green shade being named "cerulean blue " and all the 1,2 versions of the colours ).
I understand not liking them for the multi pigment and the name thing but I think it's a really good brand ! And that multi pigment watercolours get too bad of a reputation !
Also have to agree about their weird pans. Don't like that either. I wish they would come with smaller tubes open stock too

Hi Irit! I bought the mission gold pure pigment set and I was very happy with the quality. I chose that over the cheaper and very popular 36 set with a palette for that reason. The only issue I had with that set was they called a pb15 cereulean but I've seen that from other Asian brands. I think they may have changed the colors in the pure pigment set since I bought mine and its more expensive now but I was happy with it. I think the 36 set might have been a way to get the paint out cheaply on Amazon here in the USA as single tubes were very expensive from art stores. Kind of like how brother will make a cheap disposable sewing machine for target or Wal-Mart but a good machine for a brother sewing machine dealer. It's totally speculation but it might account for some people loving mission gold and others hating it.

      @iritlandgraf  Před 2 lety +1

Thanks for sharing Lindsey! I know many people love that set and I also enjoyed the formulation and brightness of the colors in the cheap 36 tubes set. My issue is the range and the naming of colors, which I find weird and just unnecessary 🤷‍♀️ thanks again for chiming in!

The mijello pure pigment line is amazing (although also suffers from the weird naming choice of not including the word hue with things like Viridian), the standard range not so much. The pure pigment set is very comparable to any other brand though

I live in Africa so there are no local watercolours here sadly. But they do import the big name watercolours so it’s all very expensive. When I got back into watercolours and wanted to level up from student grade, I decided to go with Schmincke. I didn’t buy a set tho cause the tins do not have rolled edges and I wanted more freedom to choose my own colours. So I bought an empty tin and chose my own colours! Not entirely sure why I decided to go with Schmincke but I’m beyond happy with them. I also bought two tubes of Daniel smith paints recently and I’m really enjoying them too! And their colour range is massive and beautiful 😍 so my main palette may end up being a mix of the two brands.
I’m also using Schmincke Akademie gouache while I get familiar with the medium and when those tubes run out, I will definitely upgrade to the horadam gouache because I’ve heard really good things about it!
I’d say my brand loyalty is quite strong honestly but if I can’t get a colour I want from Schmincke, I’m definitely going to try find it in a different brand!

Thanks for all the information, Irit! I have to mostly agree on everything you said about these brands (although I have yet to try Sennelier, I have tried some Jackson's paint though).
About Mission Gold, I decided to get their old pure pigment set as my first artist-grade set. Until then I was using some winsor and Newton artists grade pans that I had bought one by one but dried really hard and getting high pigment load out of them would have me scrubbing and scrubbing. The pure pigment set gave me exactly what I needed regarding formulation, vibrancy and pigment load, and I learned about single pigment behavior as well. After almost 5 years I still have most of them in my "perfect frankenpalette", a little goes a long way for their pthalos and reds so a half pan is more than enough for a long time. I particularly enjoy their Quin Rose, PBr25 and PR179. I agree that their mixes and some earth colors are weird, not their strong point at all.
I love White Nights as well, despite they get too wet. I think they are my comfort paints, I like them to be readily available XD
About Schmincke..I have used about 10 staple colors and really like them but somehow they don't make me feel excited like Roman Szmal do. Although the supergranulation paints do, I use that Galaxy Black in everything, lol. It's great experiencing how different brands can influence the way we work, but that FOMO is real too..I have more paint than I need and try to paint more so that it doesn't go to waste XD

    • @iritlandgraf
      @iritlandgraf  Před 2 lety

Thanks for sharing! For sure we all have preferences and also just faves that speak to us! I think Mijello formulate their super bright synthetic pigments well indeed. Just the entire line is a bit of a mystery to me 😕

  • @pantalonious3984
    @pantalonious3984 Před 2 lety +2

I agree it’s strange that mijello calls Phthalo blue green shade “cerulean” but they do also offer “cobalt cerulean” and “cobalt cerulean deep” which are both true and single pigment colors. And as far as the “cobalt blue 1&2” or “burnt sienna 1&2” i always figured that went for people who wanted cheaper pigments and don’t care if they are single pigment or mixed and then they offer the true pigment in a second version for the pigment snobs like most of us tend to become with time. The vibrancy and transparency of Mission Gold as well as the ease of activation AND low cost even for their true cobalts of which they have Several, made them the number 1 choice for me, and several people I know. Again, it is I agree misleading names sometimes but when you SHOULD be looking at your pigment codes anyways, and if you are someone who cares about that sort kid thing I am sure your looking, then you will get what you really want with ease. I have about 50 single pigment colors already on my palette from them and don’t even have them all yet so they definitely have them!! I’ve got about 55 colors now and can say the affordability is quite impressive and the quality for me beasts everything I have tried….Maybe give their single pigment set a real hands on look, it’s also been reformatted from what I’ve read, many colors have been. I’d say that warrants a second look. Maybe ‘someone’ will send you samples if you have a PO Box??!
Yes i realize I wrote a Novel about it but obviously I’m passionate about the quality of THIS brand, and I say with good reason. :-)
Edit: I hope I don’t come across as snobby or “know it all” because i genuinely enjoy your videos including this one, we just have a differing opinion on Mijello which is 100% cool and I respect you and your opinion, I really only meant to get mine across as well but tend to not know when to zip my mouth up 🙃

    • @iritlandgraf
      @iritlandgraf  Před 2 lety

Thanks for sharing and I always say my opinions are my own 😉 I agree Mijello has a good price point and formula and mentioned how people enjoy the single pigment set. Sure people should check pigment info but when starting out you don't necessarily know to do that or what it means. I appreciate you sharing your POV, I'm glad you enjoy them!

Great review and series. My heart is with Daniel Smith, Aquarius, and other specific colors from a lot of different brands. My favorite color that is my precious is Daniel Smiths original quinacridone gold by itself and enables me to make my favorite sap green. I will b so lost when I use my last tube. There is just nothing that compares to that sap green. Emerald green is a must for me..and of course give me all the teals/turquoise...my favorites, and must haves...

I just made myself a Sennelier pallet. I tried to restrict myself but.. aww well I ended up with a 45 to 50 color pallet. The caput mortem was really runny. After I put them all in the pans I put them in the fridge. I wanted them to stay wet but also I was hoping the caput would firm up. I haven’t used them too much yet.. I’m going to make swatches with color info I’d like to know which ones are transparent. I’d like to learn to paint with transparent colors. I saw Alyona test different brands to see which one had the nicest transparency and Sennelier was by far the nicest. That’s what pushed me over the edge to make a pallet.

Yes! It is known that Jackson's paints are made by Sennelier, I don't know if the formulation is identical to their artist grade or their student grade though. Also, the colors range is limited. I only have a couple of pans but would say it's a good economical option :) Thanks for commenting!

I have a 12 set of Rembrandt … and yes, it’s hard to find decent reviews and such for the paints. There are a lot of little brother VanGogh though. The blues and Ochre are just gorgeous.
Schminke is very expensive in the US. Nice paint. You just wipe your brush over them once & never dig.
Daniel Smith is good (for the sheer variety) but M Graham is better. 😊 Like Sennelier, made with honey.

I have the 24 set of the "strangely shape pans" from Mijello, and am thinking of buying a second set, not that I have barely dinted the first set as they are like EXTREMELY pigmented. Only 7 colours out of 24 have 2 or more pigments...the rest are single pigments...You can also add 2 full pans on each side with blue tack...like schmincke...and they fit...but then you can't use your 2" brush as well...but since I don't use that big of a brush often...I am thinking of adding 4 full pans of my favourite colours in other brands. I heard that you can buy replacements for these pans...but have never yet found the seller...Crush On is the seller for the24 colour strangely shaped pan sets/ palettes...and they are very good with customer service. The cost can vary...the palette is lovely...but a bit slim in the mixing area...long and slim...like the bullet proof palettes from Mijello the surface is nice. I did notice that they do not FLOW as much as some other brands...but maybe add some oxgall if that is what you want...The reason I want another set, is that I fear they may be discontinued, as well, I would like a second set to keep in town @ my studio, and one for at home...town is quite a ways away. They run cost wise, $100CAD or a bit more...Wondering if you would consider doing a comparison of Paul Rubens paints to Mijello or another brand...they are Asian as well...seem to have accumulated a lot of them...no granulation...except in the normal colours...vibrant as well...but my half pan set has cracks on all the half pans now...cracks just on the top...not broken or anything....a surface crackle thing. I also like the consistency of Schmincke...nice not to get hit with a big surprise in one tube...being hard as a rock or exploding...and full of binder separating. Thanks for this series...guess This is the END....Janis

Regarding Mijello Mission Gold: I LOVE bright, saturated color.... I have the pure pigment set! Love it! I will never understand why Rembrandt isn't more popular. It's fabulous. I have a ton of sets and it's probably my favorite set. Sennelier isn't pigmented enough for me. I don't like to layer and layer... I want "pow" on the first pass. Sennelier requires more layers, imho. I tried a set of White Night and liked the paint, but was so so on the colors. Then I found a source for full pans individually. I think it was Etsy or Ebay. Anyway.... I picked out all the transparent colors and added 1 or 2 that I could forgive for their semi-transparent nature, lol. THAT palette is amazing. Love every color on it, and no problem colors.

Very useful. Ty. I have a few Rembrandt colours, but tubes of g26 and the viridian were heavy on binder, which was limiting the magic of the granulation. I gave up on them, but will have another try now with yr pouring and then spraying advice. One thing that helped / helps me choose within brands are the dot cards [schmincke, ds, w+n] do you know of any other brands that do these? I'm a bit ambivalent about Schmincke. 🤔
I now think they are very good but also expensive, I only buy special colours that other manufacturers don't have from them.
I'm still a bit burdened by them, because years ago when I started with watercolour there were no other manufacturers of watercolour paint to buy in the town,
where I live, and that's why I started with Schmincke.
I had previously had problems to estimate the water and paint quantity correctly and had only managed desert or flooding on the paper and gave up after a few attempts.
I had only dared to do watercolour again years later after I could practice water and colour quantity separately with watercolour pencils.
There were too runny for me and I didn't have such fine motor skills to hold and move the brush at the start.
The difficulty was that I wanted to learn watercolour with a book in which the authors used other paints and I thought watercolour was watercolour
and tried it with mine and gave up pretty quickly again because the examples in the book had such a great, coarser texture for me
and I wondered all the time that I couldn't do it and, in addition, that I had slightly different colours.
I haven't done watercolour for years, because I found my paints so boring, and I didn't have any fun with them because I couldn't get the textures to work.😩
I remember when I found out it was the paints, I thought it was a quality thing and I started with the Akademie paints and my colours were a lower quality.
Then the ones the authors had used, and so I was disappointed when I bought the Horadam and realized they were just as smooth and didn't have the great texture.
Years later I found out that Schmincke uses very finely ground pigments and that this granulation cannot occur and that I have not failed and that the paint does not cause it.
It was not until about a decade later that they added granulating colours to the range.

I am looking forward to try some of these brands. But I will have to disagree with the comparison of White Knights and Roman Szmal. I feel that Roman Szmal feel closer to Daniel Smith in their behaviour. White Knights are in in league of their own and I feel that the earth colours are a bit drier than the rest if the colours in their range. Of course this is my opinion. • @askialuna7717

i don't have much experience with Mijello, I only bought a few colours from them when they were a bit reduced and the cheapest artist watercolours at the time in the art shop and
I still needed a few colours that were sold out before when I bought watercolours.
I only have Ultramarine Light, Dark Yellow and Indian Red, and I'm quite happy with them.
What irritates me a bit is that they look lighter in the pans after filling than other brands, and the colour is less shiny.
This could be due to the different binder compared to the other brands.
Because it is less shiny and not as smooth, they could also contain less binder than other brands, but I haven't noticed that they use up faster than other brands.
I think for the people who do more of illustrations and like ready mixes, there should also be an offer and a manufacturer should make something like that.
I myself am not averse to mixes, if they are a bit more complicated to mix and the mixing colour is a bit cheaper than I would buy the colours it is made of.
I have, for example, Davy's grey from Shin Han which is a mixture of titanium white, chrome oxide green dull and perylene green and this is price group A and perylene green is price group C and chrome oxide green is strangely not available from Shin Han individually.

Thanks for sharing! I have no problem with mixes either, I just don't understand why some classic colors who are single pigmented in every single other brand are mixtures with this one, and I think if someone is learning to mix colors using those classics it may alter the results.

My very first tube of schmincke was glacier blue. I squeezed out a bout half a pan of binder before paint started coming out. So disappointing!! Blicks replaced it but I still have a well of it because I can’t bring myself to throw it away. I keep trying it to see if maybe it can be salvaged but it’s still so heavy on the binder.

With the exception of the closest to perfection version of cobalt violet I didn't see anything exciting about the brand... Seems to be a solid choice if one lives in the UK 🤷‍♀️

Do you think it would be better to invest in white nights now or wait a little and get Schmincke? I am vegan... but I also live in Germany, so it's vegan vs local. Is white nights comparable to Schmicke or willI I be getting Schmincke in the future anyway? (Sorry if this seems like I'm asking you to make a decision for me - I am just unsure if white nights can keep up with the big boys).

Hi! Glad to have you here! I would suggest Schmincke Akademie! They are just as luscious as Horadam (although color selection is more limited) and vegan😀 another great German option is Lukas. Other EU vegan options are Van Gogh and Rembrandt, both great, Van Gogh being super affordable. Have fun!

Hi! I hope it's OK when I write in English, just goes much faster 😉
Funny you mentioned papers, I was at the art store yesterday and bought a pad of paper from. Hahnemühle with a selection of their papers including the new Agave.
I made a series in the past talking about their older selection pad, you can find it on my channel😀
I would love to try some Kremer paints as they are so well known for their high quality.
As for plant paints, not sure what you mean or where one can find them (except foraging in nature, which is not my strong suit... City gal here😉). Glad you enjoyed the video!

One russian artist one can watch is Elana Bezzanova on the nevskaya palitra youtube channel using the 35 set you talked about for a beautifull still life in a 9 part free Demonstration. Her pictures look like oil paintings similar to Susan Tustains. She also has the best value set out of selected 21 colors for 58 bucks on the german amazon when compared to the 35 is even better of a bargain. All the colors have a full 3 star lightfast rating that she uses in her set unlike the 35 set which include some lesser lightfast colors. Figured the info might come in handy for one that wants to try the brand out. Nice review Irit thx.

I had heard nothing but good things about Mijello, however, I was less than impressed. Luckily, I bought through Amazon and am able to return the set. My main issue was how hard it was to layer colors, as no matter how long I let the colors dry, layering would still lead to the colors bleeding and blooming. I don’t have this issue with my Daniel Smith, Windsor and Newton, or Qor paints.

I love my Schmincke's, but am totally with you on the ox gall - I know it's a byproduct of the meat industry, but I'd love them to do away with it still :/ I'm not vegan, just vegetarian, but it would be so great to see them find another way...
For me these are easily available and they are actually from my home area - that's why the bulk of my artsy-fartsy colour are by them. If they weren't so easy to get by, I'd probably try Rembrandt's. Their student range, the Van Gogh ones, are such a common sight in German art stores and I love them - but those really are a bit harder to find.

Ox gall has been around for probably at least a couple hundred years. It is used in the process of marbling paper and is what makes the paint flow, essential for marbling, and a unique quality of watercolor paint. Until they come up with a synthetic that will do the same thing to the paint, I doubt that ox gall will disappear any time soon. But then the question will be how good for the environment (and us) will the new synthetic be? Yes cows are killed for meat, but using other parts of the cow is in a way, honoring its life by not wasting so much of it. It’s a very personal thing.

Edit: If this is full of typos please excuse me, I am being attacked by my cat and that is distracting. 🙀
With the exception of Mijello, which I have never tried at all, I own and like paints by all of these brands.
Rembrandt I do like, but I do find that some of their paints are quite heavy on the gum arabic, as you also said. Also, I am a bit angy at this brand for including genuine sable brushes in all of their sets, which means that I will never purchase any of them. I will buy the occasional single pan/tube of their's though, and yes, they are good paints. I would love to have their single pigment set, but that damn brush...
Schmincke - Love them, very very far up on my list of favorites. Yes, normally I also do not use animal products, but watercolors are my exception. Yes, I am a hypocrite, but I tell myself that noone is crazy enough to kill a whole cow just for the bile. And Horadam are just such a joy to work with! 10 out of 10. As for their Akademie watercolors, they are also quite good, but not as good as the Horadam. I think it only makes sense to buy the Akademie watercolors in sets, because then they are considerably cheaper than Horadam. But as for individual pans, there really is no point in buying Akademie, as you said, because they almost cost the same as the artist grade.
Sennelier -Love it! Well, mostly I love it. Some of their earth tones, especially their burnt umber, are not that great. Also, they are kinda sneaky about their info. Some of their colors simply list n/a for pigment and permanence, and that is where you know that they are using some ancient pigment that will normally only be found anymore in student paints. They also sell loose pigments, and on those packages you can see what pigments are actually used for what color. Something to pay attention to if permanence is a concern. But other than that, love them, many of their colors are staples for me, like their French Vermillion, their Cobalt Turquoise (they call it something different I think), Neutral Tint, Sennelier Red, Dioxazine Violet, and many more. One complaint: The tube paint, when you fill it into a pan, never fully dries. It remains super sticky, and living with a very cat, this gets extremely annoying. Their pans are different and don't have this issue, but the tubes are considerably more affordable. Meh. I deal with this now by only filling up my palette with very little tube paint, so it does not have too much time to attract fur.
White Nights - Incredible value. I have a lot of their colors, just under 50 I think, and I really like most of them. Their earth tones mostly aren't that amazing, which sucks for me as an earth tone lover, but their other colors are great and some are quite unique. I don't think they are en par with other artist grade watercolors like Schmincke or Winsor&Newton, but that is totally ok and only normal at this price. I like my White Nights and I use them a lot, they are one of the palettes that I always have right on my desk ready to go, and man, do they ever have a lovely range of reds and blues!

I would love it if you would grade each brand & color with either a A+ - F rating or on a scale of 1-100. That would be so helpful! It would benefit to know if there's a Van Gogh that you would actually consider A+ or any other less expensive that you would at least give a B+. So many choices! Thank you!

Glad you enjoyed Susie! I don't know if I could rate in such way, as there are so many considerations that are purely geographic/economical/personal preference... That is exactly why I always explain why I don't like or like a paint. My A+ may be someone else's F purely for those reasons even if we both agreed the paint was good quality, and vice versa. Hope that makes sense, thanks for watching Susie!

About White Nights: rumor has it that since 2019 they are made in China. I cannot confirm it but their quality has gone down in the latest tubes, colors have some weird texture even non-granulating ones, like PB15 or PV19. We also don't like them that much in Russia because for the longest time they were the only option available and they were caught mixing cheaper pigments in cobalts and cadmiums.
