    After seeing this video I splurged on a wonderful book of Georgia O'Keeffe watercolors from her early years. I'm so glad I did!! She wrote to a friend in July 1917: "Cheap paper like this is a great friend lately -- A stack of it almost a foot high makes me feel downright reckless."

    I'm with you on the palettes. I will never come up with a set of colors that I don't want to move around and reorg. So lately I've just opted for half pans and a traditional metal palette. I do my mixing on either a Corelle plate or my Mijello palette. The Mijello palette has nice ramps and I wish someone would come out with a palette with ramps that had pan inserts for the ramps so you could move the colors around. That would be my ideal world.

    • @hannahthufvesson
      @hannahthufvesson Před 2 lety +4

      Haha, I think about this like twice a week, and have for a loooong time. 😂 I'm so with you on this!

    • @iritlandgraf
      @iritlandgraf  Před 2 lety +1

      I'm not sure I completely understand the ramp situation, but have you looked at Robax palettes? They have all kinds of interesting configurations...

    • @ArtBrain
      @ArtBrain Před 2 lety +1

      @@iritlandgraf Well, the little Mijello Palette like the one I'll link to has little ramps on its wells, so that you can touch the paint with the side of your brush and then if you want, either mix it in its well or slide it to the mixing space. It is so handy and so easy on brushes....except that you only have room for 18 paints and the wells are fixed, as you mentioned in your video. So wouldn't it be nice if there was a palette with the same sort of configuration, but with little "well inserts", so you could load up the paint, have the little ramps, but be able to pick up the "well inserts" and swap them around. For this to work, all wells would need to be the same size and shape, so this Mijello palette would need to be recreated, but I would love it. I love these little palettes, except for the fixed wells. www.amazon.com/Mijello-Airtight-Watercolor-18-Well-Fuchsia/dp/B002664868/ref=sr_1_3?crid=3UWZNYIJZ9QP7&keywords=mijello+palette&qid=1639767100&sprefix=mijello+palette%2Caps%2C127&sr=8-3

    • @ArtBrain
      @ArtBrain Před 2 lety +2

      I just realized that the Robax palettes have the well inserts! They just need to have one angled side on each well and they'd be what I want! ;-). The wells on the Mijello palettes facilitate rolling the brush on it's side to pick up the paint, which is hard to beat.

    • @iritlandgraf
      @iritlandgraf  Před 2 lety

      Yes they have inserts which is brilliant, but I think they have one model that is angled?

I get paper sheets (Fabriano artistico and Arches) when on sale-buy them 10 at a time for a discount and I make my own sketchbook or cut them to the size I want. So currently I have splurged on a bunch of paul rubens paints. I got two 12 pan sets. Mind you I also hold watercolor classes at my work, so while I foot the bill, they do serve me twice. And I am loving the paint. It is super smooth. It creates exceptionally smooth washes. And the paint it packed with pigment. I have qor, DS, M.graham and winsor newton, and these paul rubens might be the brightest most pigmented of them all.

    I noticed that you mentioned customs charges and they now apply to UK citizens buying goods from the EU post Brexit. I think that a lot of us ( I'm in England) forget when ordering from the EU as for so long it didn't apply to us.

    I really enjoyed this video and agree with so much of what you said. I was lucky enough when moving into watercolor from oil painting to have received recommendations for excellent supplies, so I don’t NEED to buy more or different supplies, but I love haul and review videos for ideas, new products and new colors. My splurge-worthy supply is a pochade box that really fits your style (I use a U.GO medium). This works outdoors, but is also an excellent small space indoor easel. The other supply that I love is a good portable palette with lots of mixing space - and recommend a Holbein metal palette. I’m still looking for the perfect porcelain studio palette.

    Irit, I have a gorgeous porcelain palette (American Journey Cavalcade from Cheap Joes) that has 30 outer watercolor wells and 2 very large mixing areas. Sadly, after using it for awhile, I realized that I don’t like my watercolor mixtures all merging in one big space and that I prefer to squeeze from the tube, but I absolutely won’t mix on anything but porcelain now. So, I have several smaller porcelain pallets I purchased on Amazon ranging from $8 to $30. Treat yourself and find a smaller one (or two! 😊) that lets you use the colors you want and truly allows you to see the color you are mixing as they don’t bead up. Blessings from the States!

I want to expand my collection since I've hit pan on a few of those Sennelier colors, so your suggestions are so helpful! Mixing on ceramic is really another level of experiencing painting with watercolor. Plus no staining and suuuper easy cleaning !
    The big Ceramic studio palettes with wells to pour your paint in don't work for me either. So I use a palette with no mixing place just to store my paint (I use the palette tower from studio of MM) and then ceramic palettes/ plates for mixing purposes.
    It works for me because I don't really paint outside of my home (I have a small metal travel palette but I barely use it ) and it can store a lot of colour without taking too much desk space.

    Great video! I personally have way too many artist grade watercolors from various brands. I store the tubes by brand but I'm starting to think I should reorganize by color. I have separate palettes for each brand and it's getting quite cumbersome. After having painted for four years I wish I could go back and just use one brand. My guilty splurge was Sennelier tubes curated by Billy Showell.
    ;) I was the one who didn't like the Fabriano journal. Though it beautiful inside and out, it's not quite right for my style. For more loose styles it's perfect.
