NOTE: In the video i am not suggesting that The Exorcist Believer HAS to be PG13 in order to be successful. I am merely suggesting a hard PG13 rating (because of the letdowns of countless R rated Exorcism films over the decades), COULD be a safer approach to success (because of whats at stake) wherein a heavy focus on the psychological would take centre stage and avoiding the temptation of modern tropes and pitfalls an R rated story of this kind and subgenre often presents. The ideal is the best of both worlds but...can it be done? We're about to find out this October.
Needed to be rated R unless you didn’t want the demon to cuss at all.
Well, you can get away with 2-3 f-bombs, a couple of shit's/bull shits,& even a few bitches & still be counted as a PG-13 movie...🤔 Now, once there is a any sexual reference it automatically counts as rated R.But, as long as it is just cursing it can slide. (PG-13)

If you take out the nudity Halloween 78 is pretty much a PG-13 film
I thought it was M? Lmao not even M +
That closet scene literally gave me nightmare the first time I saw the movie Dave 😂😂😂.
If the original was R rated, then the sequel should be too. It's as simple as that.
Spoken like someone who's completely missed the point of the video.
@@kevindustin396 Spoken like someone who's completely missed the point of the THE EXORCIST. Lmao
@jakebiomask so the point of the exorcist is to make it rated R? lol. If The Exorcism of Emily Rose had been a sequel to The Exorcist back in 2005, people would have loved it, and that's a PG13 film and considered by many to be most like the Exorcist in its creep and mature grounded reality.
Stop using the R rating as a security blanket that somehow makes you think the movie will be good.
@kevindustin396 lmao. I never said the movie would be good, but it would definitely be worse if it was PG13. And no, if The Exorcism of Emily Rose was a sequel to The Exorcist people would have been far harsher on it. That's what happens when you make a sequel to the GOAT. And Exorcist III is way better than that anyway.
@jakebiomask The overall point that Dave was making, was that what makes the Exorcist great has nothing to do with the rated R material and imagery, and everything to do with the fundamental themes and psychological storytelling, which builds insidious tension. The documentary style filmmaking creates a sense of relism, which helps the movie feel "real".
You take all those things out of The Exorcist and the film would not be the beloved film it is today.
A hard PG13 rating is absolutely possible to deliver an exceptional followup. And since the expectations are so high, and (as you mentioned) impossible to create a satisfying sequel, maybe that's the better way to go. That was Dave's point. Deliver a solid, creepy and exceptional moody and scary film, because the rated R stuff won't have the same impact on audiences today. We're too desensitized.
Dave you crack me up. “ f$&@ me , f$&@ me , f$&@ me “ 😂😂
When it comes to ratings, I truly feel there are only two kinds of horror fans. Ones that absolutely need that R rating and ones who don’t. I don’t think their minds can be changed. Lol. Great points!
The best parts of the original are the dynamics, internal struggles and external relationships, of Damian Karras. His relationship with his mom is one of the more powerful acting performances in a horror movie that I can recall. I would prefer they make a movie for adults and not teenage boys; with less emphasis on creative kills and more emphasis on psychology.
I agree Dave I read your PG-13 or R Rated explanation earlier thought you made a fantastic point on the whole PG-13 or rated r horror movies great channel 🤘
Great analysis .
The most promising thing to me out of the trailer is the demon make up... I think its the coolest "possessed" make ups I've seen SINCE the original Exorcist. I can't help but be optimistic. The bit in the trailer where the possessed girl is saying "God played a trick on you" is particularly promising. I thought the demon voice sounded great in that bit too... Unlike the Church scene... That was probably the most corny part of the trailer I thought.
Rip to william friedkin director of the original exorcist i wonder if he had been able to watch the rough cut of the new one before he passed?
I agree with many of the films you mentioned.
There was a pg13 phase a while back and I’m glad the pendulum has sung back, but outside that I don’t mind a good pg13 flick as long as it’s made well.
Enjoy your outlook bro and content!
Great video Dave, a lot of takes I agree with. Honestly, and this is more in regards to the film's quality, I hope this is at least better than 2 or The Beginning/Dominion. I feel thats as excited as I can get for this thing.
If it can just stand up to Exorcist 3... I'll be happy. And to be honest, in contrast to all the talk I've heard, I really thought the trailer looks great. That of course doesn't mean the movie will be good... We've seen a lot of great "trailers" that turn out to be Crap movies. I'm cautiously optimistic though off the trailer.
Do people still remember that the original film was based on Blattys novel - based on an actual case... And Blatty and Friedkin were not looking to make a horror film - and didnt see it as one?
That’s like making a PG-13 Friday The 13th film.
Terrible idea.
I want to be more excited about this one than I am
Not related to the topic at all but I’d love to know how many calories you burn a video 😂 Your energy is awesome 🔥 also, I agree with the desensitization to the demonic possession films currently. Even if the new film is GREAT, I think the original Exorcist is a product of it’s time and that’s why it was so shocking and monumental. It was the founding father of this genre. Thank you for mentioning The Exorcism of Emily Rose - everything about that movie was CORRECT. Do you remember the website they made for that?!
Hey Dave, what happened to the McRae Live from today? I was watching it live earlier and went to finish it, but it's gone...
After processing the audio was out of sync unfortunately. So I uploaded a video instead.
Bummer.
Yea Friedkin did some controversial movies. Like Cruisin as well , pretty good movie if you can stand seeing the sexual innuendos and gay lifestyle. If you focus on the story it’s a good movie.
I wonder if they are keeping a Linda Blair cameo a secret. I hope so.
Do you think Dave this movie could be good ?
The grudge, Sixth Sense, The Ring, Exorcism of Emily Rose, were “scary movies,” and I thought it was really cool, but lacked what true scares have, actual danger. A Quiet Place attempted this, but it was more suspenseful, only showed it twice, once per movie. And I don’t know why, because Edge of Tomorrow, they killed loads of aliens and other people. I think Exorcism movies Should be R because demons wouldn’t be right if they were downrated. Exorcism of Emily Rose was scary I guess, but I always found it weird for the “demon” to just stand their and take the exorcist. Not truly fighting back, even tho she had 6 demons in her. Just make it R for the Real scary movies. The point of true terror is there are No borders. The exorcist felt real, like a demon would’ve been like that. The Pope’s Exorcist was also a really good scare. I actually couldn’t watch it for a little while after. And that’s exactly what terror should do.
Dave, I agree with you about what this movie needs to be a good Exorcist movie. But i do think those things COUPLED with the R rated content, increases the likeliness that this new movie will be more in-line with the original. It was the fact that the cinematography, the slow documentary style, character driven story was juxtaposed with creepy and shocking R rated content that helped create that jarring (in a good way) effect on audiences, in regards to the original. I’m not saying that it’s essential for this new one to be R rated, but I do believe it may help to create those higher highs and more subtle low, calm moments.
Poltergeist! Rated PG
The fact that sixth sense was pg 13 and shown the back of the ghosts head blown off was so horrific as a kid seeing it but I find pg- 13 often has great build up . Exactly I always use exorcism of Emily rose 🌹 the stories structure is incredible. Court room drama definitely benefited from it . One pg 13 movie I didn’t get was alien vs predator do to all other movie’s previous were R but then again it wasn’t bodily harm it was aliens battling .
Signs with Mel Gibson is an incredible film and it’s PG13. I love that movie, it’s creepy as hell.
Death Dream and Tourist Trap are both PG. Apparently Jaws is too; maybe even G!
Here one--- Salem's lot, pg-13
Haven't watched yet and it may be mentioned but everyone just remember Poltergeist was only rated PG. 😂
BUT DAAAVVVEE! There HAS to be nudity even if it's pointless!
People are fed up with all these horror films being not gory not horror and toned down. If your doing horror then do it right and make it rated R look how evil dead 2013 remake done it as a horror yes it was rate R and was so good for it. Yes insidious 1 and 2 also the conjuring 1 and 2 was amazing films done very well as a supernatural film and the scare factor but none of them had gore or swearing nudity that's why it didn't needed to be rated R
Lemme know your thoughts...A good example of a hard PG-13 (in modern times) is Happy Death Day/2 U
These movies have just enough "adult" themes/language to make it "not lame" 🙄.It actually feels like an R movie, I think that they got away with quite a bit (including nudity even if its just an ass shot) so I know for a fact that you can still have a good movie (especially for teens) & have it still be somewhat "graphic". 🤷🏼♂️
I get your point... but truthfully out of all them pg-13 movies you mentioned... the only one I'd say was great... and might be a "classic" some day is Insidious. Certain genres just NEED that R rating in order to deliver what the audience expects... Imagine the changes that would have to be made to make a movie like "Hostel", or "Hereditary", were rated PG-13? Would they still be the same visceral experience? I don't think they really would... And theres no QUESTION that "The Exorcist" would be a different movie if it were rated PG-13
The movie is already going to suck so the R would at least make it passable .
If I see a “””horror film”””. Pg13 I don’t watch it at all!!
You're missing out!
More like scifi 😂😂
@@DaveMcRaeOfficialname 3 classic horrors rated pg? Please
@@Crussstyymferseverywhere thank you hoe bag
No
It don’t matter if it’s PG-13, or rated R movies going to be a piece of poo poo
More Blumhouse crap.
Rated G.
this movie is rated R for "Ridiculous" this is definitely the movie that would be considered as the hit to David Gordon Green's career that i hope he never recovers from
The answer will always be no in every single context. The MPAA has fucking ruined so many classic films and films that now have superior director's cuts. The only way to hit the audience hard and get them on board is to fuck them up, and with an R rating, you can do that. With PG-13, you cannot.
The Ring was awful
