BOISE - A man who served on the jury in the Lori Vallow Daybell case plans to attend Chad Daybell’s trial as it gets begins this week in Ada County.
Tom Evans was Juror #18 and was one of the twelve jurors who found Lori Vallow Daybell guilty of murdering her two children, Joshua “JJ Vallow and Tylee Ryan, and conspiracy to commit the murder of JJ, Tylee and Tammy Daybell, her husband’s former wife.
Jury selection in the trial of Chad Daybell, Lori Vallow Daybell’s husband, begins Monday morning. He faces similar charges including the murder of Tammy Daybell.
Evans had never served on a jury when he was summoned to the Ada County Courthouse in April 2023 and knew very little about the Daybell case.
“I just thought it was business as usual at the courtroom. There were tons of jurors called in, but I didn’t know they were all for one trial and had no idea what was going on,” Evans recalls. “It was really hard. I’m used to being outside and not used to hanging out inside a small room with a bunch of people.”
For five weeks, Evans spent his days in a courtroom. Some of the evidence was “horrific” as prosecutors showed autopsy photos and played emotional audio recordings.
Evans says there wasn’t a particular piece of evidence or “smoking gun” that made him think Vallow Daybell was guilty; rather, it was a compilation of witness testimony.
“They found her hair between the plastic and the duct tape on JJ’s body. That didn’t mean much to me because it’s a mom’s hair and it’s going to be everywhere,” Evans explains. “To me, it was an accumulation of things. What’s weird to say is a lot of the witnesses that had been her friend had more influence on me in making my decision than all of the police, FBI and professional people who testified.”
The trial took an emotional toll on Evans and he tells EastIdahoNews.com he feels like he’s finally “getting back to myself” a year later. The court offered to pay for counseling if jurors requested services but for Evans, his way of dealing with the aftermath was writing a book about his experience. It’s called “Money, Power and Sex” and will be released when Chad Daybell’s trial is over. All proceeds will be donated to charity, Evans says.
Evans feels for the jurors in the new trial as they will determine whether Chad Daybell will get the death penalty if he is found guilty. For Evans, he would have sentenced Lori Vallow Daybell to death if it was an option.
“I would have had no issue,” he says. “If somebody does the things they did, they deserve to die and I’m all for the death penalty in that way. Still, it would have been tough.”

Great interview! Tom... you're a good man. Thank you for your service. It had to be so tough. Especially because Lori didn't testify. After her crazy little speech at sentencing, maybe we should be glad she didn't get on the stand!
I'm glad your life and emotions are healing and getting back to normal. I liked what you said about going out to Chad's house and your different experience each time. I'm sure it was great to be with everyone and to see Kay and Larry. The testimony of the detectives when they were recovering the bodies, especially Tylee's body, was even too much for me to hear. I had to turn the volume all the way down and leave it down during the whole testimony. I wouldn't have been able to handle seeing the photos.
I'm looking forward to ordering your book. I think what you are doing with the proceeds is so honorable. I was wondering if you would be asked to delay releasing it until after Lori's Arizona trial.

LDS/Mormon ‘religion’ provides a cloak to cover & prevent snooping. You see it when Charles speaks to law enforcement when Lori took his truck & wallet w/keys locking him out & he says ‘we are LDS’ the cop immediately starts to almost speak another language - hard to explain but if you watch the Netflix film- it’s there. Same w/Ruby Franke & Jodi H case -high up church ppl recommended Jodi despite her losing her license to practice. Time for these churches to get taxed & thereby to have more scrutiny on what goes on behind closed doors.

Interviewing jurors is one way to find human error, I don't think it's a good idea to interview Jurors today with all the information you could find out about jurors to find something wrong with any individual.. Just review the Scott Peterson trial for one example, One of the reasons Scott Peterson filed for a new trial was Jury misconduct by one juror..In the Alex Murdaugh case lawyers are appealing for court clerk and jury misconduct... a book writing was also brought up in the misconduct

I don't think I could get through such a trial seeing horrific photos and hearing the experts' testimonies and graphic reports without shedding tears and dealing with possible ptsd after the trial was over. It has to have an effect on the jurors.

You know, Laurie Daybell did the jury a favor. I imagine with any homicide case.💔 Eurie has a video of the person committing the murder there must always be a 10% of “I hope I got it right.” With Laurie‘s closing statements, she gave that jury the gift of clarity and confidence in their decision..

I made it through my childhood with a narcissistic mother like Lori and my baby's father is still with his narcissistic mother like Lori....I was assertive and emotionally expressive with my mother putting her in her place and scaring her off and my baby's father is opposite and he is passive and emotionally suppressive and his mother's narcissistic abuse left him with serious mental health issues...he split from reality and split his personality like Norman Bates and the other personality is his mother....and his mother programmed him to injure and kill anyone who comes between her sick relationship with her son......so when he feels strong feelings for a woman the mother side comes out and attacks any woman he cares about.....his narcissistic mother targeted me and my baby for elimination just because we take away from her significance in his life....her son has strangled me and assaulted me sexually when he was acting as his narcissistic mother.....so there are still other versions of Lori Vallow out there in the world who need to be held accountable for their abuse and one of them is named Diana Symalla of Folsom, CA.

Believers often fallaciously use Pascal's wager with the, "What if you're wrong and there is a god?" argument. You face God's judgement in the end and burn in eternal Hell. But they usually don't consider the reverse of that which is, "What if you're wrong and there isn't a god?, and you wasted a lifetime believing something that wasn't true without an afterlife of Heaven or Hell.

I just have to say that John Prior deserves an applaud. Separate his client from him and look. He is taking on a death penalty case BY HIMSELF. Can you imagine the stress and anxiety and pressure he must be feeling? Can you appreciate that for one second for that man and never mind who his client is? God bless that man. I believe in everyone's right to zealous defense, I don't care who they are. This is America and we give them that for a good reason. God speed to John Prior.
