How Old Is Too Old To Start Fighting?

  • I want to be able to fight forever. Many Muay Thai legends like Sagat and Samart Payakaroon are still in the gym to this day. But what if you start at a late age?
Want to become one of the best Muay Thai fighters ever? Then come learn from the best. === www.NakMuayNation.com
I'm a firm believer that it's never too late to start training Muay Thai. When you begin your Muay Thai training not only will you learn a beautiful (and practical) martial art, but you'll also be improving the entire spectrum of your health, so why not give it a go?
Now training Muay Thai is one thing, but fighting and actually stepping in the ring to willingly get punched in the face is next level shit. That is when age becomes a real factor due to the high risk of being seriously injured.
Is it realistic to have a fight even if you picked up Muay Thai at a later age? What should a typical training regimen look like when preparing for a fight? These are the questions that Nak Muay Nation fan Chris Large asked me for this weeks Muay Thai Monday Q&A... and here are my answers.

You're never too old. I'm 65 and I started training Muay Thai at 63. In March of this year, I attended one of Sean's Muay Thai retreats in Costa Rica. I'm hoping to have my first match sometime early next year. Obviously, a meaningful amateur career is not realistic (for me), but a smoker match or two is really all I'm looking for.

At 39 years old I had been training and competing on a martial arts national circuit in forms and sparring.
I was addicted to both, and was fairly successful as I was rated #1 & #2 in the nation.
I then had a surfing accident which caused me to become paralyzed and to have to learn how to walk again.
Martial arts helped me fully recover from my injury and today I still train and spar in the gym.
I’ve ventured back into the competitive arena again for a short period only to find it too political and not to my liking.
I brought home a few trophies though to replace mine that had been lost in Hurricane Sandy and that was satisfying enough.
I’ll be 64 in July, the lessons I’ve learned are that any martial art can save your life when it’s threatened even when the threat isn’t coming from a human being.
In my case it was the ocean and Mother Nature.
Finally, and probably most importantly, we’re not promised any tomorrow’s so go out and grab life by the balls despite any self doubt about whether it’s right to do because of your age.

I started training when i was around 40 years, had my first fight at 41, went to thailand at 42, had 2 other fights when i came home. I lost all my 3 fights, i'm now 49 and still training. It's fine to fight at 45. BUT be aware. that unless your really lucky your gonna fight guys the are 15-20 years younger that you. They usually punch and kick harder than you, and are a lot faster than you.
I can clearly feel the difference between now and 10 years ago. 10 years ago i had no problem what so ever taking punches to the head, but now a couple of hard punches will give me a severe headache and nausea the day after.
So that is also something you have to take into consideration.
    Good Luck :)

I remember going into the toilet and there was a man around 50 years old , I assumed he was someone's parent so I didn't ask if he was competing too . Turns out he was and he absolutely whooped his opponent , not with raw aggression but skill and grace and from what I gather he hadn't trained for long . If you want to get out there and fight take the necessary steps and go for it!

Video is spot on. I had my first amateur N Class fight (shin guards on) at 47. I lost but only because I gassed in the 3rd round. Nerves drained me in the first round plus my stamina wasn't where it needed to be. Things to note:
Your opponents will almost always be much younger than you (guy i fought was 24)
Your opponents will almost always be faster than you (my opponent actually was not)
Your recovery time will be a bit longer (took two weeks for bruises to go away)
Don't rush into your first fight (I had only been training for 2 months, skipped interclub/smokers and jumped into N Class [I'm in London])
Do competitive sparring. Technical sparring is great but competitive sparring is very close to the real thing
Step into a ring. My first time in a ring was during my first fight. It was surreal but that was not the time to not be clearly focused
If you're an orthodox fighter learn to kick with your left leg without doing a switch kick. Very good for inside leg kicks and blasting your opponents right arm.

In 2014, I started training at 30. I felt after almost 2 years I could finally train in Thailand. So I prepped myself for 6 months by doing a mix of pads, stretching, and cardio. Now that I'm here in Phuket, I can barely handle the humidity to last during sparring. I can't even make it through the entire class... How long does it take to get acclimated to Thailand's heat and humidity? I thought I was ready, but I guess I did not prepare that.

I tell him he's not too old, if anything, having to work extra hard at it is motivating. When you're young everything comes so easy to you and I actually like the whole process of working hard at it (i train 3 days a week plus 1 day boxing), then resting and healing up, then jumping back into it....I think if you can just appreciate the process it makes it so much easier. :)

Muay thai has really caught my eye. It seems the most practical self defence martial art in the world. High stance focusing on not dropping your guard keeping really solid. Keeping composed, keeping everything really solid. I've sparred with a few of my friends who have trained in muay thai and bjj and they have all said that i show quite a high fight iq. Ive recently become employed in the same area as a muay thai gym so its safe to say im joining asap👍🏻

Guess what, comparing to the other beginners in my class, i m much more fitter and i punch/kick harder than most of them. My schedule now are visiting the gym on Monday, Thurs and friday. Muay thai will be on Tuesday. And on saturday i will go for a swim. After taking up muay thai, i realised cardio workout are so so important, hence i started running on the threadmill on my 'gym days', which i rarely did previously.

In order to help that adrenaline kick it's best to start breathing through your mouth, just don't show your opponent that you are tired or uncomfortable. The breathing exercises I use mid sparring or fight helps me regroup and get my thoughts together. Then focus only on technique. That should help you control the ring / opponent.

Started Muay Thai when I was 20, was the best thing I done but life came in the way and had to stop a year later. Now I'm 32, thinking of starting again! Hopefully I dont wait till past 40 and ask the same question, and hopefully whoever reading this doesnt either.
Start, screw the age, one step at a time, go with the flow and listen to what your body tells you in terms of going hard or easing up.
Goal is to reach old age with a strong heart and healthy mind.

Per ur question, if you are vitamin d3 deficient. You can take lots of calcium but it wont benefit you because your not absorbing it. You can have ur doctor check you out for levels of d3 and go from there. Hope this helps

Lol. I started learning muaythai at 57. I'm not athletically gifted; never represent my school in any sport. I'm a true desk jockey. BTW, I'm a Thai, living in Thailand. Forty years ago, no muaythai camp would accept a non fighter for training. Now I train three times a week, 3 rounds of four minutes pad work. I alternate fourth round between sparring and clinch work. I trained muaythai solely for self defense. If you've lived in Thailand, you'll know that there are bullies who will make your life unpleasant. As for real fight? I just had an owner of ancient muaythai school challenged me to a fight. I accepted his challenge, and he backed off. He knew me as I was his student when I first started muaythai. He knew that I am at least 6 years older than him. I'm 77+now. This ancient muaythai teacher is also > 15 kilograms heavier than me. He was owner of ancient muaythai school even before I started muaythai. Here is a clip of yours truly, doing padwork. about 8 months ago

I love training like you do and I go about 3 times a week as well but I miss the competition in my life that I used to have in my younger years so I figure this is a good way to do. I am a little concerned about fighting someone half my age only because of the speed aspect but I am counting on my age as an advantage to keep my cool and not get all amped up and gassed out. Good luck and great question as I was wondering about all your questions as well.

Are you fighting in a smoker/interclub or actual amateur fight? If it's a smoker/interclub the ref will ensure you finish the fight and even allow a break if you gas. He will also ask you both to tone it down if he feels you are doing to much in the fight. What weight class? That makes a HUGE difference. As I said above i had my first amateur fight at 47 and fight at 90kg (200lbs heavyweight). At that weight the guys are slower, gas faster but hit much harder. I gassed in the 3rd round and lost against a 24 year old opponent.
If you're an orthodox fighter learn to kick with your left leg without doing a switch kick. You can throw inside leg kicks and blast your opponents right arm once you add this to your toolbox. switching will give him time to react but minus the switch the kick is two fast to dodge.
Also learn the Taekwondo version of the push kick. Kwonkicker has a great video on this. It's called the push/stomp kick. it's like a running teep. Learn it and try it during sparring.
      Don't forget your angles
Don't worry so much about brain damage. Younger guys can attack your lead leg much easier than getting in close enough to punch you in the face. If you forget to check those leg kicks be prepared not to walk then next day. Good luck!
