- Mini has launched two electric versions of its all-new generation Countryman that will sit above a fresh pair of petrol versions and are slated for release in Australia in Q3 this year.
Chasing Car’s contributor Dan Gardner heads to Portugal to drive the most futuristic - and largest - Mini electric to date, which will be priced in Australia from around $65K for the base Countryman E.
The high-grade Countryman SE version on test here will be priced at $75,990, or around $82K on road.
With a claimed 433 kilometres of range (WLTP) from its 64.7kWh battery, 230kW and 494Nm of dual-motor ‘ALL4’ drive, and wild styling inside and out, the new flagship Countryman looks to up the Mini EV game on many levels.
Is the new electric Mini a significant leap over the likable if range-limited first generation? And what’s it like to drive? Let’s find out.

I love it! An EV isn’t practical for me, so here in the US, I’m test driving the Countryman S (ICE) in a couple of weeks. Can’t wait! Your enthusiasm is infectious!
I’ve had the Countryman S E Sport L3 since early April after 3 years with the F56 Cooper S E. I loved the hatch version and rarely drive more than 50 miles round trips so the hatch was perfectly acceptable for its range even in the coldest winters. Now I have 65kW usable - just made a 450 miles round trip with 2x18 minute charge stops, I would never have dreamed of doing that in the F56 Electric.
The S E. Has a peak charging rate of 150kW DC and 11kW AC - it’s a pity in this day and age that 150kW is only held until about 43% then it tapers off quite quickly - surely the BMS could be programmed to hold peak speed to at least 60%? Otherwise it’s a lovely comfortable car to make long trips in and a great one for having a blast in on bendy country roads. Efficiency isn’t bad either as I’m averaging around 4.4miles/kWh at the moment, that raises another technical issue - why does it need to power both motors all the time - my 2023 D250 Defender manages to disengage the front drive above 28 mph but re-engages it if slippage of a wheel occurs or I want to welly it?
I’ve had great experiences with Mini after sales services over the past 10 years and no trouble with the car but read they aren’t meant to be great for service and reliability. Maybe that’s a newer thing. I suspect the fit and finish of the car would be better than Tesla?
Note to editor, you might want to rework the end as he mentions the price three times.
Still cute as a bug's ear. I love it.
Did you mention about charging specifications - AC and DC rates?? Also what can you control via the app (ie. start/stop AC, location of vehicle, unlock/lock doors, view charging stats, etc.)? Boot space? Space in the rear seats? Seems to have missed a lot in this review about the vehicle.
The Jetson’s 😏
Great video but toward the last quarter of the video the point about the price differential of the entry level model and the subject model at $78k is repeated 3 or 4 times.
Sorry but how can they still use a HUD with that little plastic screen? Either do it right with a windshield projection or just don't...
He mentioned it is the rake of the windscreen. Also it makes the windscreen very expensive.
Are the cup holders large enough to take a 600ml bicycle water bottle?
Owned a first gen Cooper S. So much fun to drive and a great engine note. This mini looks and sounds terrible 🤦🏻♂️
Those gimmicky sound effects would get old real quick.
They can be silenced
No thanks - too many gimmicks.
Looks like a suzuki swift
Downvote, no video of the trunk
Clearly you are biased towards Mini! The way you talk about those gimmicks..lol
It’s too bloody big…
It's overpriced for what it is.
Bmw mini are overpriced from the beginning 😂
HUD is crap! I have the exact HUD on my Mazda CX 3.....totally worthless

Bad after sales support. Never admit that they have faults, running away from their responsibilities. Watch out bad dealerships
@@FreddyGunawan yeah but they are nice cars (when they run).
@@witsendcottage595No, it works well in my wife’s Mini. Much better than the Mazda one.
The use of "amazing" is the hallmark of someone who doesn't actually know what he wants to say so the default "amazing" is all he can come up with. The interior of this car has had every possible opportunity for the driver to interact with the car eliminated and now has all the tactile feel of ordering a sandwich from a gas station vending machine. yawn....and all for thousands more than before......
