- Hello there, welcome to my personal channel and a video covering a subject many of you have asked me about. The installation of an aftermarket exhaust system on a BMW with OPF/GPF filters is proving to be a challenge for many and therefore I felt explaining to you what is required to make it all work.
In this video, you will see my BMW M2 Competition parked up in a workshop in Germany. We raised the car up so that I would be able to show you the Akrapovic Titanium exhaust system under my M2C. Next to the car, we have the parts of a stock exhaust system, which was fitted to a BMW M2C. You will see the rear muffler, OPF/GPFs and the stock downpipes with catalytic converters.
In the video, I will run down all the options that are currently available on the market, and I also explain more about how you should decided on your aftermarket system for your BMW M2 Competition, BMW M4 Competition, BMW X3 M Competition, BMW X4 M Competition, BMW M5 and BMW M5 Competition.
More models with OPF filters will arrive on the European market over the coming months and years, and this guideline provides an excellent overview of how to deal with the exhaust noise out of your car.
Enjoy the video! If you have any questions, please drop them in the comments of the video. You can read more via the links provided below:

Terrific video--thanks for explaining options so clearly. I'm contemplating an Akra slip on/axel back for my F90 M5 comp, thereby retaining the OPFs (due to MOT and insurance regs): my hope is that this will enhance the sound, even if it might not be quite as loud as it would be with OPF deletes. Fantastic video mate
Very informative……thanks for educating me.
Brilliant, should have done this when I had the m4 comp last year
Awesome video with great explanation, I have 2022 X5 M50i USA spec and I'm thinking about installing catless downpipes and we don't have opf pressure sensors here in USA but I'm wondering if it's possible to use Manhart or lieb engineering Mil delete kit to tackle the cel error after catless downpipes installation. Your advice will be very helpful for my project. Thanks
It works based on results from a fellow bimmer post member who did it. I am doing the same on my 21 x5 m50i

So if I'll delete OPF will I be able to pass emissions and STK(TUV) in Czech Republic? I wonder how big of a difference it makes and if to bother with it. Otherwise I'd get a custom exhaust without muffles and OPF. Also can you do an OPF delete and modify software on 2021 which have locked DME?
Hello. I have Bmw M2C and all I have done is installed decat downpipes recently. I have not deleted OPFs yet. Will it damage the engine, because of the high flow through downpipes and restrictions in OPFs? Thanks in advance!
Dear Muslim, thanks for your comment.
Yes!!! It will potentially damage the engine, because of the high flow through downpipes and restrictions in OPFs. Immediately go back to stock or remove the OPFs.
You will burn through the OPFs and damage the engine considerably. The OPFs can't handle the additional pressure and you are actively now damaging your complete set up. If you are going for a high speed and sporty run, you could well have now two red glowing tin cans under your car. Not good!
Work your way from the rear to front with the exhaust set up. NEVER EVER leave OPFs in the car when you go de-cat. Let's hope you don't have any damage already.
Great explanation, very informative video!
Glad it was helpful!
Excellent stuff!
Amazing video! There is very little to find out about the OPF filter delete! Are such modules also available for a Volkswagen GTI?
Great video mate 👍🏻 I have a question 🤔 I have an M140i 68 plate which have OPF filters.. I want to fit a Remus back box & also delete the resonator ? Will this cause the sensors to give me an error ?
Potentially yes! You want to go OPF-back and keep the OPFs in place? Chances that you will get errors are huge due to the more free flow, but ask Motech Performance in the UK. They have done so many M140i's. They will now more.
Hello sir, amazing video first of all. Unfortionality i dont have a bmw to use that litle box... i have a c63 whit opf now and i need to do an ECU tune. Because i cant leave them hangin like that on the car? Thankyou by the way to explain it as good as posible. ❤
Any updates? Are we all sure that there will be a warning light when we remove the opf’s?
Updates on what? Yeah you 1000% get warning lights on the dashboard when you take them out and don't install a solution for it.

I have a G23 M440i. I cant delete or change my opf because i have warranty till 06-2025. I live in holland. What can i do?
Not much if you want to keep your warranty. Just keep the car stock until further notice or order a backbox / slip-on system that your dealer allows you to install and keep your warranty, but chances are they won't. Just depends on the relationship with your dealer.

Great video thank you for explaining this! If possible would you be able to make a video explaining the legal/car service issues surrounding removing the OPF filters?
The negative effects of removing the OPF on the warranty and UK/EU laws with emissions do put some people off so any further information would be incredibly useful. I have heard that cars which come with OPF exhaust systems need to have them refitted before a Service/MOT to avoid a fine if they have been removed. Thank you!
The legal issues are really hard to understand right now since they are so country specific. The only country that enforces them a bit is Germany. Others are not that far yet.
Until your first MOT arrives you don't have any issues. You can run without OPFs. The issue is there at your first MOT, but that is 3 to 4 years away. At this moment no MOT service station can measure the impact of the absence of the OPFs in connection to Euro 6 emission regulations. They will be able to do a visual check, and do an emission test that puts the outcome against Euro 5 levels.
So you could put a M4 pre-OPF (before 08/2018) and with OPF after (from 08/2018) on the same test right now and both would be signed off positively. They will both be within the limits even if they are produced a month apart. The OPF car will have a lower emissions output, but both are within the legal limits.
This means that you could fit a pre-OPF exhaust system on a M4 which came with OPFs. That is no issue right now. Although, and that is where the future will change and nobody knows when, it could be the tests are altered to accommodate Euro 6, but still if you have an exhaust without OPFs that is homologated and stays within limits for Euro 6 then still you will have your MOT signed off fine. No MOT employee will notice on a visual check that the OPFs are missing. He will just check if all looks decent and if the emissions test stays within limits. Nobody will know that a car doesn't have its OPFs fitted.
On the subject of service there is no discussion the dealer will notice an aftermarket system, but I always say to the dealer... "I don't have your warranty on the exhaust system, I have my warranty somewhere else". Point to note is that OPF filters need replacement after about 100K due to the nature of the filter. The filter clogs up and you will loose performance along the way.
Other than this, I am not aware why people are so scared about it. It is like catless downpipes. You don't go with those to your MOT either, because you know you can't get your car signed off easily. In this case, it is not any different. Fit all back and store your original exhaust or find a "friendly" MOT station that will help you out. I heard those exists in the UK as well ;)
@@Shmarc150 thank you so much for your reply!
how much does the akrapovic system cost on the M440i convertible
No idea, use Google and you will know.
Doesn’t removing the OPF and running a decat make the car illegal to use on UK roads and cause issues with emissions/MOT
No idea... Not aware of what UK rules are. I never have seen issues with this in the UK
This is the best explanation I have heard so far! Thanks.
Question: My bmw is Australian and I have the first cat box which is close the the engine, no probs but I have another 2 boxes on my exhaust just underneath the driver/front passenger door. The first box is rounder and bigger (rainbow coloured) and the second one looks like a mini muffler (grey).
The boxes are right next to each other 15cm apart max. So I think the first box is an opf but i'm not sure about the second box. Any idea?
You don't have OPFs. In your downpipes you have two primary catalysts and in the mid pipe you have two secondary catalysts.
@@Shmarc150 thankyou for the reply. I install a Y pipe recently with a muffler attached to one end of the Y pipe. The car sounds great when the valves are open and quiet in comfort mode.
So I can get rid of the two mid pipe cat's with no tuning requirements at all?
I’m adding a Akrapovic Evolution Titanium axel back to my M440i. Will this create an error or engine light?
Nope
Hi Shmarc,
I'm really struggling to warp my head around an issue. I have a 2018 F30 340ix with OPF, and I'm looking to replace the whole exhaust. Let's say I want to buy the M Performance Exhaust and a Wagner 200 cell downpipe. Both the exhaust and the downpipe are said to be incompatible with OPF cars. But why? Is is because of the connection between the downpipe and the rest of the exhaust? My logic is that if I use both a non-OPF exhaust and a non-OPF downpipe, it should all fit and work without any issues! Could you please tell me if a setup like this would work? Thanks a lot!
Yes it would fit in many cases without any problems, but it is all about the sensors (which normally are attached to your exhaust) and them being operated in your ECU. Those sensors would light up a Christmas tree on your dashboard if you don't take care of them and disable them in the ECU software. You can ask a tuner to create a ECU tune for you which disables them completely and then you can run any exhaust you want.
hi, quick question :
why 2014-2018 milltek exhaust will not fit my car ( secondary cats delete + back exhaust ) they told me it would not fit ????
why ??? all F82 F80 are the same right ???
The length, the hangers postions are the same right ??? BMW did not modify this only for 2019-2020 models.... makes no sense...
can anyone clarify this
Thanks
Engine is different between a M2 Coupe and a M2 Competition. Therefore the exhaust doesn't fit. You have a single turbo N55 engine in the M2 made between 2014 and 2018, and a twin turbo S55 engine between 2018 and 2021. Different engines means different exhausts.

Hi Mauro, the best option to stay legal in Swiss and get more sound is fitting a EC homologated slip-on backbox.

Ik wil op mijn M140i een decat downpipe nemen, maar mijn OPF in zijn plaats laten, puur voor het verwijderen van de geur die je bij decat krijgt. Zou de OPF deze geur wegnemen denk je? OPF Back is al helemaal aangepast.
Je kan absoluut geen decat doen als je een OPF behoudt. Je brandt zo door de OPF heen en dan heb je grotere problemen. Nooit decat doen als je OPF behoudt. Van achteren naar voren werken bij het verwijderen van filters en dempers.

I bought CTS DECAT downpipes, i just noticed on the website I bough them, it says for compatibility, to 2019 models 🤔?!
What's the difference between 2019 and 2020 models ??
BMW did change the turbo's exit for 2020 models ???
That would be really weird...🤔
@@douglasduch3337 There is no immediate difference between 2019 and 2020 catless downpipes, but there is a difference between the stock downpipes of the 2019 and 2020 cars.
This difference is that you could be running OPFs on the 2020 version and this means that on the 2020 downpipes there are pressure sensors installed to measure the flow after the cats in the stock downpipes.
This measurement is required to make sure that you don't blow your engine when the OPFs are blocked. When you go catless with your new downpipes you don't have the connections for those pressure sensors and therefore the car will flick a limp mode and engine warning ligiht.
In the end, when you go catless on the downpipes you NEED to remove the OPFs and fit a new cat-back system or linkpipe as well and therefore the sensors are obsolete. You would need to code them out using an ECU upgrade, something you would need to do anyhow to deal with the Delete-R and going catless on the downpipes.
