    Shovel Knight was smart to adopt such a timeless style. I feel like it will continue to age gracefully until it is eventually forgotten

    i love that every game of shovel knight makes the original story a little better since is almost every game is a prequel so makes the worldbuiling in general so cool

    RIP Super Best Friends, I still listen to Castle Super Beast regularly but it's not the same. And it never will be.

    Solid video! I love Shovel Knight and I'm glad to see it has such staying power.
    You only touched on it briefly, but I unironically think the 3DS version of Shovel Knight is the best to date. Its 3D effects were actually really solid, and having your inventory on the bottom screen made it easy to access. I think the former is the reason why the upcoming DX version of Shovel of Hope is going to have panoramic 3D, which is just such a fun/weird touch.

    This makes me feel old. I remember playing this as soon as it came out on 3ds.

    I just got treasure trove on a great sale for 20 dollars. I'm playing it for the first time and it's amazing!

    Amazing video! I've been seeing the shovel knight in so many media, but never got to see the game by itself. It's insane how well it holds up to this day

    I thoroughly enjoyed Shovel knight when it came out. It was my first experience of playing and finishing a chalenging, but fun game. I still have fond memories of playing it. And the simplicity of main mechanics makes it easy to pick up and re-live those good times.
    And, i am not talking about the 3 addons, with their unique addons. Love this game.

      The other game of that caliber would be Guacameelee. I never get tired playing those games.

    I first played Shovel Knight on my 2DS in 4th or 5th grade.
    It's the game that got me into playing indie games.

    It caught my attention with the era appropriate aesthetic. Indies are better with that nowadays, but there weren't many from that time doing it this well.

    Shovel Knight is the best 2D platformer overall. I have like 800 hours in the various game of the Treasure Trove. It never gets old.

    i'm really looking forward to that DX remake
    just playing through the story as 20 different characters!
    (though I do hope the Body Swap mode, now work on more characters and on the different playable characters)

    Well, i must say.
    THIS game doesnt just live up for today, its straight up insane and it outlives some of other famous games! Recently i replayed King Of Cards, king knight's DLC and i decided to 100% it with including every achievement, which i did.
    And Becaouse of that...
    Let me say: What devs were smoking?
    Like, this game is actually stacked with small details!
    Let me list out some of my favorites:
    1. Secret location (fairy glade) has some fairies that are only unlocked upon completion of other DLCs
    2. If you skip Mr Hat completely and complete the game without fighting him then in the ending cutscene he will actually move to the armory himself by dragging THE WHOLE SHOP!
    3. Upon getting 99999 gold (max) your armor will be completely golden (i suppose it also works for other knights, and the way i discovered it was buying family portrait in KoC's NG+, yes it costs that much.)
    4. Upon getting all collectibles a golden statue of King knight will appear in glidewing praising you for the dedication
    5. Upon collecting all Joustus cards a blue joustus stylised monument will be built next to lastly mentioned statue!
    Dont you guys think Yacht Club games are awesome after that?

    I enjoyed Shovel Knight a lot, but man Spectre of Torment was something else, the game feel was incredible

  • @rpgslime6793

    I will say playing the game again my one gripe is that during combat shovel knights movement speed feels a little sluggish though it makes sense as a knight with heavy armor

  • @caboose759
    @caboose759 Před 28 dny +3

    Such a great game.
    My only "Problem" with it is that the game is as hard as you make it. If that makes any sense.
    You can choose to make the game harder by desttoying checkpoints, grinding money to be "Overleveled" on health and mana as well as the silver armor to just give you a super swing after two bounces, stuff like that.
    And even then, its only a minor thing.

    • @apollyon6855
      @apollyon6855 Před 26 dny +1

      Completely agree, there's nothing avoiding you from using the most busted relics that the game has

    • @quadpad_music
      @quadpad_music Před 25 dny

      What's worse is people argue this is just a product of "fixing NES era bullshit".
      Truly great games force you to PLAY THEM by their rules while still giving you options, regardless of their difficulty. It's the reason chess is still popular milllenia after it's inception.
      You can easily get all of the best health upgrades in SK, damage boost through most of a section, reach a checkpoint, die, respawn, recover your money and be left unpunished. Removing half the checkpoints from the midgame onwards would have been enough to fix this issue, which you can do manually while playing and all, but I shouldn't be going out of my way to make the thing I'm playing into an actual game.
      I used to think SK was a masterpiece, but as I grow up I realize it fools you into thinking it's retro without any of the bite. I don't mind a game being easy, but it should make me play it, and this one just lets you bypass most of the actually well designed challenges it puts in front of you.

    • @lukebytes5366
      @lukebytes5366 Před 20 dny

      @@quadpad_musicit's not as much "fixing NES era bullshit" as much as it is having an actual difficulty curve. The lategame levels are arguably just as hard as classic nes stuff, they just aren't thrown at you from the very start.
      And...there are challenge run achievements in the game that force you to omit things like checkpoints and relics. Is that not playing the game by it's own rules?

      You could also wait for Shovel Knight: Shovel of Hope DX to drop. It adds a ton of new playable characters, some fun cheats, and a couple of long forgotten features from specific releases.

    Coming back to it, yeah. It's still nice.
    Specter is fun.
    King is interesting.
    Plague is weird but kinda fun.
    Shovel is kinda basic.

  • @Kwyjor
    @Kwyjor Před 18 dny

    With its short, punchy, innovative levels, King of Cards is just so much better than the other chapters. (Can't say I cared much for the card game, though it's obvious a lot of work went into it.) The length of the levels is otherwise just a bit too grueling; the achievements are downright sadistic.
