- A Boundary Waters trip along the Cherokee Loop in September 2021. My brother and I took our mom on her very first backcountry canoe trip. Though the weather was a bit rainy, we had a great time overall. There was a drought in the BWCA while we were there and this was apparent in numerous locations where the low water levels created unforeseen challenges. Cherokee Creek was incredibly low and we had to portage an extra 70 rods along the shore before we could launch into the creek.
BELOW IS A DETAILED ITINERARY OF THE ROUTE
ROUTE:
START: - Sawbill Lake - NE to (83 rod portage) - Ada Creek - N to (78 rod portage) - Ada Lake - N to (100 rod portage) - Skoop Lake - N to (181 rod portage) - E to Cherokee Creek - Cherokee Lake - SE to (165 rod portage) - Sitka Lake - SE to (101 rod portage) - North Temperance Lake - East then South to (37 rod portage) - South Temperance Lake - S to (225 rod portage) - Temperance River - Weird Lake - (12 rod portage) - Jack Lake - S to (71 rod portage) - Kelly Lake/ Temperance River - NW to (206 rod portage) - Burnt Lake - NW to (95 rod portage) - Smoke Lake - SW to (106 rod portage) - Sawbill :END
I grew up in the Beartooths and still have a home there. My full time residence is Colorado. For 30 yrs I've been visiting the BW. I try for at least a 3 week trip every year. One night my youngest son and I were spending the last night of a 3 wk trip on Wine lake. I asked him if he had to pick just one place to adventure where would he be? BWCA was the answer and I agree. I live in the dream places of the Rockies but the north country has just a charm. Your work is exceptional, Thank You!
Boundary water people! My kind of people
#BWCA is the northern gem for sure 💙
Absolutely! I agree 100%
I’m doing this in May with my 6 year old son as a father son trip and we are both so excited to be up there!
Should be a good trip. It’s an enjoyable route. Have you been to the BWCA before?
@@ruggedendeavours756 no I have not. This will be our first trip! Unfortunately May is the only available time for my son and I to go. Plus it’s for his 7th birthday but I’m just hoping the ice is out by then. Great video! I cannot wait for that scenery and peace!
Just came across your channel and loving your videos! Great work, thanks for sharing!
Hey thanks for commenting. I’m glad you are enjoying them. I will have a lot more coming over the next six months as my traveling picks up. Stay tuned!
Great video! Very nicely done!! Thanks.
What camp site were you staying at on Cherokee? It looked pretty secluded.
It is very secluded. The site is tucked into a cove on the western shoreline about 1/3 of the way up the lake. It’s not marked in all maps and does not show up on the online database but it is a site.
Awesome! I kind of want to go again.. Maybe if i can find a way to kill all the mosquitos lol
In September there are no mosquitoes ;)
